Teacher in classroom

Jumoke Lawson 123 Yaba Ugo Street Yaba Lagos [email protected]

September 24, 2021

Mr. Umar Kabiru Green Peak School 123 Main Street Victoria Island Lagos

Dear Mr. Umar,

I am interested in applying for a secondary teaching position in your school. As a graduate of Yaba College of Education, I have required teaching experience on the JSS 1, 2 and 3 level, in both Physics and Mathematics. I believe my years of teaching experience, coupled with my passion for community engagement make me an ideal candidate for this teaching position.

I am currently teaching JSS 2 students at Bright Stars Secondary School and I have experience teaching secondary school students in a variety of settings. Having held the position of education coordinator at my previous roles, I also have experience in management in the school system. Based on my understanding that this position requires a teacher with varied experiences in the school system, I think my varied experiences would make me a valuable asset for your school.

Part of your school's mission is to engage students from diverse cultures. I have extensive experience incorporating teaching styles that promote cultural diversity and inclusion into my classrooms. For example, as a teacher at Bright Stars Secondary School, I helped the management incorporate Culture Times in the extracurricular activities for the students, which helps students learn about the different cultures of fellow students in a fun way.

My goal is to combine my wide experience and quality of being a compassionate and intelligent teacher to make positive contributions that will benefit your students, school district and community at large.

I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely, [signature hard copy letter] Jumoke Lawson

25 Teacher Cover Letters Examples To Help You Get Hired

Your guide to a killer cover letter that will get you that interview.

Teacher Cover Letter Examples

Whether you are sending out resumes hoping to land your first teaching job or looking to shift to a new school or district, one fact remains the same: All the best credentials, experience, and passion will go unnoticed without a strong cover letter. The main rule? Sell yourself the way a publicist would. Cover letters aren’t a time for modesty. They’re a time to highlight your accomplishments and make your passion for teaching known. Below you’ll find our tips for creating the best cover letter possible and our top teacher cover letter and CV examples.

3 top tips for crafting a teacher CV or cover letter:

Keep it short and sweet..

You’ve only got about 30 seconds to capture a hiring director’s attention, so start with what we call “the elevator pitch.” Imagine you have the time between the elevators closing on one floor and opening again on another floor to sell yourself. Instead of rehashing everything on your resume, use the space to craft a paragraph or two that will convince them you are a standout candidate and are worth moving on to the next step.

Emphasize why you’re a great match.

Read the job description and find the overlap between the skills you bring to the table and the skills they need. If the job description calls for certain qualities or uses specific language, repeat them in your cover letter! The ultimate goal for your cover letter is to say, “You’ve got a problem? I’m the ideal person to solve it.” Be professional and use concrete examples.

Individualize!

Tailor each and every cover letter to fit the specific school, district, and job for which you’re applying. Research the school and its culture. That way, you can address their expectations and also use specific examples of achievements in your history to show why you’re the right candidate for the position.

1. Primary Teacher Cover Letter Examples

The first sample comes from Diana, who has a few years of practical experience. The school she is applying to adheres to principles for schools of modern learning, and has a focus on using technology to improve children outcomes.

Hiring Manager

Greyswood Primary School

18 Mount Pleasant Road

Greyswood, GU27 0GL

As an primary school teacher with 7+ years of experience working with children aged 6-10, I was delighted to see that you were looking for someone like me at Greyswood Primary School. During my employment at Little Rock Primary School, I was able to introduce the same principles of modern education that you base your philosophy on, and boost test scores 12% in my classes, as well as reduce disruptions by 24%, so I would slot right into your methods.

I graduated in Education from University of Manchester in 2011, before a short internship at the Department of Education. At Little Rock Primary School, I was responsible for the daily teaching of 80 Year 2–Year 5 pupils (I am experienced in managing groups from 3 to 25 at all primary school ages). When working with children I do not use textbooks, but try to introduce solutions that are interesting for children based on the use of modern technology. I obtained a £56,000 grant from the council for the purchase of teaching aids and tablets for children. I have started a tradition that spread to the whole school that every second day of the month, we take an educational trip to the museum or a theatre, having negotiated it with the local facilities for free. At least once a month we have a ‘Career Day’, where children meet people from different professions to find out about what they do. Over the years, we have had over 50 different professions represented, some multiple times. Thanks to extracurricular activities I organised for four weeks in March, my pupils obtained first place in the county-wide "Keep an open mind" Art competition. Thanks to my methods of activating students and using multimedia teaching aids, my pupils' results are on average 25% better than in other classes.

I am convinced that my experience, excellent contact with children, and constant desire to develop make me an excellent candidate for Westwood Primary School. I know that a non-standard and modern approach to education is extremely important to you, which is why I would like to take advantage of your experience and in return offer my ingenuity and readiness to work hard.

I am looking forward to discussing with you how my interactive methods can boost learning behavioural improvements at Westwood Primary School.

Right away you know exactly who you’re dealing with. A thoroughly organised, modern, and effective teacher. She’s staying after school.

The next example is from someone who just qualified, but only has private and babysitting experience in the past.

Buckland, 1st March 2020

Westgate Primary School

16 Bell Street

Buckland, RH1 0FP

I am writing in regards to the primary teacher opening advertised on the Westgate Primary School website. As your school is recognised as one of the best primary schools in Suffolk, I was waiting for this opportunity. I would like to transfer proven child care skills from babysitting 60+ children ages 3-14, practical experience in giving private lessons for 45+ children weekly aged 8-14, and strong educational background to start my teaching career with you.

My passion for working with children began in secondary school, when I started working as a babysitter. A natural ability to keep the children's attention, organise their time, and explain homework resulted in a two-year internship in the afternoon kids' club, where I was giving private lessons for 45+ children weekly at the age from 10 to 14, boosting their Maths test scores by 16% on average. At the same time I was studying Early Childhood Education at the University of Southampton, from where I graduated in 2019 with first-class honours. Education studies gave me expert knowledge of teaching methodology, and studies of Child Psychology helped me to better understand and shape children's behaviour. In two years of giving private lessons, I have had 100% retention rate, and the lowest absence rates amongst all staff, assuring me that I have a natural disposition for working with children.

Given my comprehensive education and broad experience, I am confident I can translate the best parts of working 1-on-1 into classroom settings at Westgate Primary School.

Can we schedule a meeting to discuss what would be the best way to do that?

Josefina P. Grantham

Let’s hit the books.

2. How to Write a Primary Teacher Cover Letter

1. format your primary school teacher cover letter.

If your margins are unruly, how are you going to take charge of 30 kids? More than reflecting on you as a person, it is more likely just to discourage someone from reading further. Don’t fall at the first hurdle.

This is how not to lose marks on your cover letter format :

  • ‘Align Left’ all contents.
  • Set even margins on all sides, 1-inch minimum.
  • Match the font to your CV font —no smaller than 10pt.
  • Use 1.15 line spacing. Leave a line between each section, and between paragraphs.
  • How long should a cover letter be ? 1-page is always enough for a cover letter.

Check once again at the end—formatting can mess up mid-way, especially if you’re copy and pasting from your CV.

Once you have set the play area, let’s see what to include in your cover letter.

2. Address Your Primary School Teacher Cover Letter

Add your contact details at the very top of your primary teacher  cover letter address area , making it identical to your CV header . Do not omit your physical address or phone number. Underneath, write down the date and city, and below, the details of the head teacher, or whoever is dealing with your application.

3. Say Which Job You’re Applying To and Introduce Yourself

Address the head teacher by their proper title and surname. Start your cover letter by clearly stating you are applying for a primary teacher position, and provide your most significant teaching achievement to convince them to keep reading. Then link it back to what you can do for them

You can just replace the [blanks] with your information:

Primary Teacher Cover Letter Sample: Introduction

Dear  [Proper Title] [Surname] :

I would like to apply to the  [Primary Teacher]  position at  [School Name] . During my  [X] + years’ teaching background at  [Past Institution Names] , I have managed to  [your most significant teaching achievement] . I believe I can translate this performance into  [boosting test scores/improving behaviour/etc.]   at  [School Name] .

Expert Hint: The British Educational Suppliers Association reports there are over 264,804 primary school teachers in the UK, and yet there's still a shortage of teaching professionals in England. Get your cover letter right, and you can be sure you'll have no trouble landing a job.

4. Make Your Case in the Main Body of Your Primary Teacher Cover Letter

The first paragraph was for attention. The second paragraph is for convincing. You should focus on the positive outcomes you can achieve for your students, parents and other staff alike. Address the needs and values of the school—check their website in-depth, and write a targeted cover letter that isn’t generic .

Try and quantify what you achieve. Score improvements, lower number of incidents, higher satisfaction. Try to think of the innovative things that you tried that really took on, and include them as well.

Sample Cover Letter For Primary Teacher Jobs: Middle Paragraph

I obtained my  [Degree Name]   from  [University Name]   with  [Honours, if you achieved first-class] , where I developed a special interest in  [discuss relevant coursework if light on work experience] . At  [Previous School Name]  I have been responsible for  [number] [age groups]  students, in classes of up to  [number] . I believe in   [a modern approach to education/interactive learning/etc.]   therefore I have  [obtained funding/bought/budgeted for] [learning aids] , which allowed the students to  [improve at something] . I am invested not only in the learning, but the development of children which is why  [I gained certifications/studied child psychology/etc.]  and can help  [School Name]  improve its  [something they want to improve] .

Expert Hint: If you are really scant for experience and achievements, you can opt to bolster your package with some additional certifications on your CV and cover letter, and get a first aid certification from the British Red Cross .

5. Explain Your Teaching Motivation

The worst thing that could happen is when you are suddenly too modern, too innovative, and too progressive to be employed by some schools. Let them know you respect them too by finding out what is important to them and discussing those values and goals.

Make them feel like it’s the only school you’re applying to.

Fill in the [blanks]:

Primary School Teacher Cover Letter Sample: Third Paragraph

Joining  [School Name]  as a primary teacher would be a benefit to me, the kids, and the school, as it would allow me to channel my  [special skills]  in order to  [achieve something for the kids or the school] .

6. Request An Interview & Leave a Call To Action

Signing off your cover letter the wrong way can send it straight to the bin. Being too friendly, too enthusiastic, or too sure of yourself can all play to your disadvantage. Be bold and explicitly ask for an interview, underlining it with your strongest argument or achievement.

Then sign off formally.

Sample Primary Teacher Cover Letter: Call to Action & Closing

When would be a good time to have a call or a meeting to discuss how my  [your best, most relevant skill/their most important requirement][skills/experience]  can help   [Target School Name]   achieve  [something important to this school] ?

Best Regards,

One more tip. Use active voice and action verbs on your primary teacher cover letter. It means “20 students were mentored by me” becomes “I mentored 20 students.” The latter feels more impressive.

Tips to Write an Ideal Teaching Job Application Letter

application letter for primary school teaching job

Just like every other job, the teaching professionals need to draft an application letter to complete their process of application for teaching job. Indeed, many experts argue that an application letter is the most important step towards landing your ideal teaching position. By now, you must have understood the importance of drafting the right application for a teaching job. Let us now look at some of the top reasons to send an application for a teaching job along with some major tips.

Importance of Application Letter

An application is the first thing that a school principal or recruiter will look at when they are on the lookout for new teaching professionals to join them. An application for teaching job, commonly referred to as a teaching cover letter is a basic introduction to your job candidature.

Your application for teaching job will determine whether the recruiters will proceed with your candidature further. Hence, it is important to create an attention-grabbing and hard-hitting cover letter embedded with the right keywords, accomplishments and more.

Structuring Your Application for Teaching Job

The first paragraph of your cover letter should incorporate the most important aspect – the position of interest. A recruiter might be looking to fill up several vacancies at the same time, hence mentioning the position will help them avoid confusion. Also, mention your educational qualifications, teaching certifications and licenses, along with your relevant experience. If you are a fresher, you need not give credence to experience in the cover letter.

In this competitive world, there will be many other professionals in the fray to land the job that you have eyed. Hence, it is extremely important to create a top-notch profile to stand out from the crowd. Use bold fonts to highlight your accomplishments and place them better in the cover letter to gauge the attention of the recruiter.

Tips to Conclude Your Cover Letter

After structuring your application for a teaching job, do not forget to thank the recruiter for going through your profile. Also, make it a point to mention that you will be expecting to hear from them soon. You can also add any point that might not fall in the relevant categories such as educational qualification, certifications, work experience, and so on.

Do not forget to maintain consistency in your documents. For instance, if you are using a border in your application letter, then use the same border in your resume as well. Make sure that all fonts and sizes match across documents. It gives the recruiter an impression of consistency on your part.

If you are looking to foray into teaching and look to kickstart your own business, then here’s your chance. I have served as the coordinator of my college Tutorials as well as the director for my religious society tutorial in college, completed a full-time Postgraduate Diploma course in {Subject} from {Name of Institution}. I have also taught aspects of this {Subject} to a number of young students both as a volunteer and a hired instructor. I am well-versed with the basics and nuances of street theatre, stage productions, and theatre appreciation, and bring with me an innovatively designed programme which incorporates essential elements of these for the benefit of your students.

Dear Mr. /Mrs. /Ms. (Manager’s Name),

I was pleased to learn about your need for a mathematics Teacher. I have ample experience in implementing teaching and assessment techniques. I also design and develop educational objectives and prepare teaching materials. I am prepared to apply my skills and experience to immediately add value to your organization.

The following are highlights of my skills and accomplishments:

Presently working at Topways High School as an Mathematics teacher entrusted with the responsibility upon to assess and look after 60+ students throughout the session. I’m able to communicate complex information in a way that students can easily comprehend. I’ve Prior experience of improving students’ ability by adopting distinctive teaching techniques, documenting all lessons, organizing healthy group discussions, and mentoring under-performing students.

Here at Topways High School I successfully increased the writing and reading comprehension test scores by 21.3 % over the past two and a half years.

My strong initiative and exceptional organizational skills, combined with my ability to work under pressure, allows me to play a crucial role in a fast-paced teaching environment.

I have my curriculum vitae attached. I welcome the opportunity to discuss with you in an interview how my skills and strengths can best serve your institution.

Job applicants often confuse application letter with cover letter. Although the two letters are used to express interest in a job opening at an institution, the two letters differ from each other, and are used differently. However, there are situations where they are used together in a job application process.

A cover letter is medium dependent. It’s used to support other documents, for example you submit curriculum vitae with a cover letter. An application letter on the other hand is often used independently. The application is used with a cover letter you apply for a job via email. The message you write in your email becomes the cover letter, and the application letter, curriculum vitae arte attached to it. Other documents like certificates may then be annexed to it.

Example of this scenario includes:

I write to apply for the abc job position, as specified in your advert on LinkedIn. Please see my attached application letter (the document that states my intentions and expectations), as well as my CV/resume (the document that summarizes my skills and experience).

Kind regards, yours truly

Letter of Application – tips and sample!

application letter for primary school teaching job

I’ve received a few messages asking about what to include in the letter of application. Personally, I give some key points that make me a suitable candidate for the role. The letter of application is the first thing that the selection board will see and therefore you need to stand out and make them interested in reading your application!

How to start; Dear Chairperson Dear Reverend Chairperson Dear Sir/ Madam Dear Mr. X Dear Ms. Y Dear Fr. L To whom it concerns,

There are lots of options to choose from; If the chairperson’s name is given in the application then use it, otherwise try to find the name of the chairperson on the schools website. Only use ‘Reverend Chairperson’ if you are 100% sure he is a priest.

Usually I use; Dear Chairperson.

I wish to apply for the position of ________________ at ___________________ school.

Please find my application for the position of _________________ at _______________ school enclosed/attached (if email).

My _____________ and _______________ would make an excellent addition to your teaching staff.

Next choose 2/3 main points that would make you a perfect candidate. Qualifications? (Teaching practice grades – if newly qualified) Experience (have you worked elsewhere? in a different field – how will this contribute to your teaching?) Music? Drama? Sport? ICT? Other extra curricular activities? Experience as a resource teacher? Working in a range of schools/class levels?

Research any school you would like to work in – read the mission statement and school ethos and see how your skill set and experience fits in with the school.

Dear Chairperson,

I wish to apply for the position of mainstream class teacher at St. Mary’s N.S. I  feel that my experience and enthusiasm in the classroom would make an excellent contribution to your staff.

In the classroom, I use a range of different methodologies to keep the children interested and active in their own learning. I completed my probation in 2014 and have experience as a mainstream and also a learning support teacher. My time as a learning support teacher taught me how to best differentiate for children who have additional learning needs.

I also love to get involved in extra curricular activities. In my current role, I coach the school gaelic football team and was involved in the set up of the school Choir.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application.

Yours faithfully,

_____________
