Entry-Level

To write a great paralegal cover letter , focus on telling your unique story within the legal field. What types of cases have you supported throughout your career? How have you positively impacted your previous law firms? Use this opportunity to show potential employers how your expertise in legal research and administration can help drive favorable verdicts for their clients.  Below, we’ll walk you through each step of building an eye-catching paralegal cover letter:

1. Contact information and salutation

List all essential contact information at the top of your paralegal cover letter, including your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn URL. Be sure to address the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.” This is preferable to salutations such as “To Whom It May Concern,” as these types of greetings are largely considered outdated.

2. Introduction

Lead your paralegal cover letter with a strong opening paragraph to grab the hiring manager’s attention and entice them to read further. Highlight your years of experience as a paralegal and emphasize the types of cases you’ve worked on throughout your career. Demonstrate how you’ve supported attorneys and positively impacted previous employers.

Notice how this candidate provides a concise yet compelling overview of their background within the legal field. In addition to their years of experience, they also focus on their versatility as a paralegal by showcasing their ability to liaise with various parties across a variety of cases. Showcasing these types of unique insights is a great way to strengthen the introduction of your own paralegal cover letter.

I would like to apply for the senior paralegal position with Smith & Klein Law Firm. As you can see from my attached resume, I have over eight years of experience performing legal research for a wide range of criminal and civil cases. I’ve also liaised with judges, opposing counsel, clients, and courtroom staff during trials. My dynamic legal background makes me an ideal candidate for this role.

3. Body paragraphs

Continue to describe your professional experience, qualifications, and achievements in the body paragraphs of your paralegal cover letter. Start by mentioning something specific about the law firm’s reputation or legal specialty and why this draws you to apply for the position. Feature accomplishments that demonstrate your ability to support attorneys during trials.

In the example below, the paralegal highlights their experience conducting critical research for multi-million dollar transactions within the real estate industry. These details show the nuances of the candidate’s legal background, which can help make a lasting impression on the hiring manager.

Keystone Law Partners’ reputation for excellence in real estate law draws me to apply for this opportunity. During my six years with Folgers Legal Team, I advanced from a legal assistant to a senior paralegal charged with training new hires. My supervisory and legal experience would be an asset to your team based on my professional achievements:

  • Conducted legal research and due diligence on multi-million dollar commercial real estate transactions, which included title searches, zoning laws, and environmental regulations
  • Identified potential risks, performed contract management reviews, analyzed legal and financial documentation, and maintained case databases
  • Drafted correspondence and facilitated meetings with clients and legal parties

4. Paralegal skills and qualifications

Rather than providing a comprehensive list of skills on your paralegal cover letter, tactically integrate keywords from the job description into your paragraph. Focus on legal terminology and skill sets that match the needs of potential employers. Below, you’ll find a variety of key terms you can add to your paralegal cover letter:

Key Skills and Qualifications
Attorney-client correspondence Civil law
Client relations Communication
Corporate law Criminal law
Data analysis Discovery
Federal law Legal correspondence
Legal research Legal support
Legal writing Liability
Litigation Memorandum
Personal injury law Pre-trial motions
State law Trade law

5. Closing section

Feature a call to action in the conclusion of your paralegal cover letter. Invite the hiring manager to schedule an interview or reach out for more information on your legal background. Reinforce how your unique experience can create value for the law firm you’re targeting. Be sure to thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration in the last sentence.

I hope to speak with you further regarding how my extensive background in both criminal and civil law would be an asset to your legal team. You may contact me via phone or email at your convenience. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Paralegal Cover Letter Tips

1. feature specific case types.

Although it is recommended that you never disclose confidential details about cases while crafting your resume, you can paint a picture of the types of cases you worked on as a paralegal. It’s appropriate to talk about your experience as long as you aren’t disclosing sensitive information related to an individual case. For instance, you might mention you provided legal support for multi-million dollar personal injury cases. This establishes a sense of scope for your accomplishments without breaching client confidentiality.

2. Highlight your legal expertise

In addition to showing your experience with various types of cases, it’s also important to emphasize other areas of legal knowledge. For instance, you could mention you performed research to inform pre-trial motions or identified legal precedents for dismissals. As you build your cover letter, be specific in how you supported attorneys and legal teams.

3. Showcase your communication skills

Being a strong communicator is an essential aspect of any paralegal role. You’ll be regularly tasked with drafting motions, emails, and other forms of legal correspondence. In some instances, you may also serve as a liaison between your law firm, opposing counsel, judges, and courtroom staff. Rather than simply listing communication as a skill, feature tangible examples from your career that speak to this.

Ethan Johnson Dykema Cox Smith 123 Fictional Lane Dallas, TX 75001

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I have always respected Dykema Cox Smith’s commitment to justice and fair representation, so I am thrilled at the opportunity to further your mission as a paralegal. Sharing your aim of ensuring justice and quality legal help to all clients, I’m certain I can add value to your team by identifying legal precedents, furnishing substantial trial assistance, and maintaining citation accuracy in your legal documents.

In my most recent role at Tarleton Law Firm, I conducted legal research and offered robust trial support, affecting the successful resolution of cases. After identifying a slow delivery due to fragmentation in research and miscellaneous paperwork, I restructured our filing process. As a result, we saw a 32% improvement in case turn-around time and a 27 percent increase in the number of clients we could support weekly.

Notwithstanding such significant progress, we still encountered challenges accessing previous case references. In response, I spearheaded a digitization effort with our IT team to shift our library resources and case references to an online, highly searchable platform. Post digitization, our average case research time dropped by 38%, and our annual saved man-hours incremented by 22 percent.

Success is also about interpersonal relationships and professional growth. My initiative of organizing weekly Legal Spotlight sessions, an in-house knowledge-sharing platform discussing landmark cases and advanced citations, garnered appreciation. It not only enriched our team with diverse legal knowledge but also improved our retention rate by 17% over the past year, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.

At Dykema Cox Smith, I see an opportunity to add tangible outcomes. The prospect of being your paralegal, advancing justice, and resolving clients’ legal complexities couldn’t be more exciting. Thank you for considering my application; I am eager to discuss my credentials at your convenience.

Writing an Exceptional Paralegal Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

When you meet with clients, you understand every case’s preparations must be tailored to their unique needs and circumstances. The same is true for your cover letter.

While reviewing job descriptions , consider how you can customize your cover letter to each law firm’s needs. Do they specialize in personal injury law? Then you may want to connect to how you’re skilled at analyzing medical records and doing investigative research into personal injury cases.

How to draft the opening and greeting of your paralegal cover letter

You know that lawyers do a lot of research to hook judges with their opening statements in the courtroom. Opening your paralegal cover letter requires a similar level of detail to get the legal hiring staff’s attention.

Consider ways you can connect with each law firm you’re applying to. For instance, if you’re applying to a firm that practices family law, you could explain how you want to help parents and their children get the best results during divorce cases.

Additionally, try to nail the greeting by addressing a specific person from the legal hiring staff. You can sometimes find that information in the job description or the law firm’s website, or on LinkedIn. If you can’t find anything, simply leading with “dear [name of law firm] hiring team” will work well too.

The example below is an ok start, but the applicant could do more to try to connect with the services the law firm provides and their specific skills in the opener.

Try to connect more than this!

Dear J.L. Associates hiring team,

I’m very interested in the paralegal position you have available. I’m very familiar with the legal system and have studied a lot about it, so I think I’ll be a great fit for your firm.

Instead, focus specifically on the law firm’s needs and how your professional skills in trial assistance and legal documents fit in, like the example below.

Connect with the law firm’s mission and needs!

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Guidelines for writing the body of your paralegal cover letter

Once you’ve hooked the legal hiring staff’s attention with your intro, it’s time to discuss how your credentials and previous work experiences have equipped you for the paralegal position.

A great way to stand out is by using metrics like accuracy or the percentage of successful cases you worked on. You can also include grades or how the materials you learned in your paralegal associate’s degree equipped you for the position if you don’t have as much experience.

Take a look at the example below that does an excellent job of citing metrics like reduction in errors and decreasing data breaches while managing legal documentation.

A good body paragraph full of relevant metrics

Finalizing and signing off on your paralegal cover letter

Just like the opening statement is essential in legal cases, a top-notch closing statement is equally vital to achieving a fair ruling on your case. Try to do the same with the closing of your paralegal cover letter .

Ideally, you want to return to your main points and revisit how you connect with the company. For example, if you’re applying to a firm that does senior law, you could reconnect to how you want to help improve the lives of those in need of senior care.

You should also include a light call to action toward the end, such as “I look forward to discussing this opportunity further.” It helps show your interest in the position.

What you don’t want to do is get too generic and not relate to the specifics of the paralegal position at all, like the example below.

Yikes, too generic!

I am eager to start my career as a paralegal, and your firm seems like the ideal place for me. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

James Smith

A better way to close out your cover letter is the example below, which clearly relates back to the firm’s legal innovations and services in the scientific industry.

A well-connected closer for the win!

As an aspiring paralegal, I see every legal challenge as a chance to learn, adapt, and thrive. This eagerness to contribute makes me the perfect candidate for Thermo Fisher Scientific’s reputation for innovation and reliable service in the scientific industry. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing this opportunity further.

Paralegal Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

  • In your field, legal jargon is extremely precise, and small errors can make huge differences. If you’re preparing paperwork to support attorneys at your firm, you’ll definitely be double-checking your work: And things should be no different with your paralegal cover letter! Refer to your dream employer’s website and professional social media accounts like LinkedIn for a golden sample of their general tone. In addition to reflecting this writing tone in your paralegal cover letter, see if there are any standout phrases or keywords like “case turn-around time” or “diverse legal knowledge” to reference. By nodding to these tidbits in your cover letter, you demonstrate your preparedness for crucial legal research!
  • From shorthand in the courtroom to efficient document preparation and data entry, concise and clear writing is essential. Don’t find yourself slipping on to a second page—and if you do find yourself pushing the limits or considering page margin adjustments, try prompting ChatGPT to condense your cover letter . The primary topic of each body paragraph should be the quantifiable impact you’ve made during your professional journey. Context is awesome, but keep it brief.
  • This should be the other way around—the paralegal role is all about assisting legal professionals and their clients. Demonstrate your understanding of the company’s client-focused mission through the focal points in your body paragraphs. Instead of talking about how much you enjoyed working at Tarleton Law Firm, consider how your helpfulness and client retention rates contributed to their success. And, again: Consider measurable examples of the difference you made for your team and furthered the company vision.

While it may seem like a hassle, writing a unique cover letter for each law firm you apply to is essential to stand out amongst other candidates. It’ll help show how you connect their specific mission and the type of law they practice.

Ideally, you want your paralegal cover letter to be no longer than one page. It’s the same as legal correspondence, where you want everything to be concise and relevant to why you’re writing the message.

Each law firm will have a different culture, so review the job description to get an idea of the tone they write it and try to match it as best as possible. For instance, if the tone is more formal, focusing on formal practices and being more fact-driven about data from cases and work experience will be the best idea.

Whether you’re just starting your legal journey or are an experienced legal professional seeking a new role, there’s no way around it: demand for legal positions is high, and the job outlook for lawyers in the US grows at a faster-than-average pace . Pair this industry growth with movement from lawyers already working in the industry (the 2022 Legal Trends Report found that in the 12 months before April 2022, nearly one in five lawyers left the law firm they were working for, and nine percent planned to leave their firm in the next six months), and it’s clear that many lawyers will find themselves needing to stand out in a competitive job market.

However, despite the high demand for legal positions, people still need legal expertise—and law firms need capable legal professionals to fill open roles.

Whether you’re a law student, recent graduate, or experienced legal professional, this post will help you with your legal cover letter writing. We’ve started by providing sample cover letters for legal positions below and will then guide you through the essentials of writing a compelling cover letter for law firms.

How to draft a cover letter for a law firm

writing a legal cover letter

It’s one thing to review examples of legal cover letters, but how to write one? By following the standard etiquette and structure—and then personalizing it—you can draft an effective cover letter. First, let’s review some legal cover letter best practices.

How to practice law part-time (or with flexible hours), changing legal practice areas here is everything you need to know, finding an alternative career for lawyers, cover letter etiquette.

Even after reviewing some legal cover letter examples, the dos and don’ts of legal cover letter writing aren’t always easy to spot. You may ask yourself: what should a legal cover letter include for a law firm? While the content of your cover letter will differ between employers, these points of etiquette should not.

  • Don’t skip it. The first—and potentially most important—element of legal cover letter etiquette is just writing one. While job sites and hiring portals may state “Cover Letter Optional,” disregard this, it is always best to send a cover letter.
  • Be concise. The hiring manager is likely receiving dozens, or maybe even hundreds, of cover letters a day. Respect an employer’s time by getting straight to the point. Long legal cover letters may also indicate an inability to achieve quick and succinct results.
  • Match their tone. Write as if you’ve already been hired for the role. It’s subtle, but an employer will appreciate this personal touch.
  • Prioritize the employer. Don’t include unnecessary details about your life that won’t impact how you’ll perform the job.
  • Don’t recycle legal cover letters. Be original. It’s time-consuming work, but it’ll show your potential employer your dedication.
  • Triple-check it. Spelling and grammatical errors should be avoided at all costs. Given the highly competitive nature of the legal job market, you don’t want to be passed up over a simple error.

Addressing cover letters for lawyers

To whom it may concern: Always take the time to find the correct contact. When writing cover letters for law firms, it’s a common misstep to dedicate so much time and attention to the body of the letter that you overlook the basics—like who and how you’re addressing the letter.

Here are some best practices for addressing your legal cover letter:

  • Know who you’re speaking to. Do your research and be specific. Address your cover letter to the person responsible for hiring at the firm you’re contacting, like the senior partner or hiring manager. If you don’t have this information, the law firm’s website might come in handy, or you can contact the law firm’s human resources department for guidance.
  • Be careful with salutations. The salutation is a place to convey respect and showcase that you’ve taken the time to personalize the letter. Mistakes in the salutation are a sign that you’ll miss details, which won’t bode well for your chances of impressing your potential employer. If you’re certain of the recipient’s preferred gender-identifying language, you can write the salutation as “Dear Ms.” or “Dear Mr.”; however, if you aren’t certain (and don’t make assumptions) or you don’t want to use gender-identifying language, drop the “Ms.” or “Mr.” and write out the person’s full first and last name.
  • Double-check your spelling. People will always notice if you spell their name wrong, and there are multiple ways to spell even common names. Ensure you start on the right foot by getting the basics right.

Introductory paragraph

In your cover letter’s opening paragraph, you have two main goals:

  • Introduce who you are.
  • Explain why you’d be a good fit for this particular firm.

In the first paragraph, include details about:

  • Who you are. Are you currently a law student? Are you an associate at a law firm?
  • Who you know. Mention any referrals or mutual acquaintances right away.
  • Why you’d be a great fit for the firm. Include specific reasons—you’re looking for a way to create connections with the senior partner or hiring manager.

Main cover letter body

The body section of your cover letter is your chance to shine—and to concisely summarize exactly how you meet the requirements in the job description.

In one or two paragraphs, give a high-level overview of your legal education and experience to show:

  • Why you want to work for this firm. Elaborate on what makes you genuinely excited about the firm—whether it is an area of interest you’ve specialized in, the firm’s reputation or mission, or past experiences that will make you a uniquely good fit.
  • Why this firm should hire you. Make clear connections between your qualifications and aspects of the role you’re applying for. If there is a job posting, look closely for key attributes that the firm is looking for, and then detail how you meet those expectations.

Highlighting your qualifications

Above all else, ensure your legal cover letter highlights your skills. Relevant qualifications for a law firm cover letter include:

  • Past legal work experience or positions.
  • Community service roles.
  • Academic or research specializations.
  • Publications.
  • Relevant awards you’ve received.
  • Your personal background.

For example, consider a job posting that describes their ideal candidate as someone with personal injury litigation experience, excellent communication skills, and who works well both independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced office environment.

If you were applying for this role, your cover letter’s body paragraphs might detail your past personal injury litigation experience and specific examples of how you’ve successfully communicated within a team and in a fast-paced environment.

Remember: Be specific, but keep in mind that this is not the place to restate your resume —if you can grab the hiring manager’s attention here, they will read your resume for those details. Your cover letter is where you can entice the reader to move on to your resume by providing context and highlighting how your experience lines up with what’s needed for the role.

For tips on writing a standout lawyer resume, read our blog post here.

Concluding paragraph

Finally, your concluding paragraph is where you’ll succinctly wrap the cover letter up, close the loop, and leave a positive impression. In your closing paragraph, be sure to:

  • Say thank you. Gratitude can make a difference, so always thank the reader for their consideration.
  • Assert your next steps. It’s fine to clearly outline how and when you will follow up on your application, rather than waiting indefinitely for an answer. And, if you say that you’ll follow up at a specific time, be sure to do it—and hold yourself to your word.
  • Provide relevant contact details. Let the reader know how to reach you by phone or email, if these details are not already outlined in your letter’s header.

Tips for using your legal cover letter to stand out

tips for writing a legal cover letter

The legal industry is rapidly evolving, and job hunters need to set themselves apart to get hired (unless, of course, you decide to start your own law firm ).

If you’re applying for a job as a lawyer, whether it’s a traditional position or a legal work-from-home job , here are five tips to make sure your cover letter lands at the top of the pile.

1. Make it personal

Perhaps the most important tip for writing cover letters for lawyers is to make it personal.

Many of your competitors have similar education and professional experience, so being generic is a fast track to being forgotten.

Use a personalized cover letter to showcase the unique reasons why you’re the best candidate. Show that you know the person you’re writing to, and highlight any connections. If that isn’t possible, you can always write about the firm to show that you’ve done your research.

2. Prioritize the positive

When writing a lawyer cover letter, focus on what you have to offer. Regardless of why you’re looking for a new job, you bring a unique mix of attributes to the table. Highlight these attributes, whether they’re your:

  • Other legal careers
  • Relevant work experience

If you’re a law student or recent graduate, you may not have a long legal career to highlight. However, you can still note strengths like technology skills that make you an asset.

To a hiring law firm, being tech-competent and familiar with certain cloud-based tools like Clio could be an advantage that sets you apart from other candidates.

For example, more and more law firms are adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help them run their practices more efficiently, with the 2023 Legal Trends Report finding that nearly one in five legal professionals are using some form of AI in their practices already. With this in mind, lawyers up-to-date with AI technology may stand out for hiring law firms.

3. Get to the point

Legal cover letters are not the place to be long-winded, and droning on will almost certainly have the opposite effect of what you’re going for. Keep cover letters for attorneys short, to the point, and persuasive—the trick is to be memorable and limit yourself to one page. Because you want to make a lasting impression on a single page, it’s also a good idea to check your cover letter’s sentence structure. Do you start all of your sentences the same way? Are they all the same length? Ensure there’s some variety so your reader stays engaged.

4. Set the right tone

Tone matters. While what you say in a cover letter for lawyers is obviously important, it also matters how you say it.

No matter what type of legal job you’re applying for, you always want to convey a professional tone. However, depending on the law firm you’re applying to, using a personal tone may work to your advantage. Tailor your tone to match the law firm you’re applying to.

If you’re writing a Big Law cover letter, for example, you’ll want to err on the side of being more formal. For a smaller local law firm? Check their website and match the tone to demonstrate your familiarity with their firm.

5. Proofread

There is zero room for typos or grammatical errors in cover letters for lawyers. With so much competition for legal jobs, don’t give hiring managers a reason to eliminate you. Take the time to carefully proofread your cover letter yourself, and consider enlisting someone else to proofread your cover letters as well.

Final thoughts on how to write a legal cover letter for a law firm

In a crowded legal job market, there’s no better way to outshine the competition than an excellent legal cover letter. Ensure you’re putting your best foot forward with your future employer by:

  • Making it personal. At every step, customize your cover letter to the firm you’re applying to—from the tone to the specific skills you detail.
  • Keeping it brief. Cover letters for lawyers are a one-page summary to let the hiring manager know that you’re a candidate they should talk to further. You want to give them enough information to draw them in, but not overwhelm them and risk losing interest.
  • Showcasing your strengths. Focus on the positives, and don’t be afraid to highlight how your past experiences make you uniquely qualified.

While finding a new legal job in a competitive market isn’t exactly easy, staying resilient and adaptive will lead you to success. By crafting a great cover letter, you’re more likely to be noticed in this—and any—job market.

And, no matter what job you’re applying for, knowing technology can help set you apart—both when job hunting and once you’re working at your new firm. If you’re a law student and want a head start, you may be able to get free Clio access via Clio’s Academic Access Program (CAAP) at your law school. Learn more about CAAP here .

Do law firms read cover letters?

In a competitive job market, hiring managers at law firms read cover letters to help determine which candidates may be the best fit. A well-written legal cover letter can entice the reader to review your resume—and, hopefully, invite you for an interview—by showcasing how your experience and skills align with the role.

  • Interest in the Firm:

Show genuine interest in the law firm or company by mentioning specific reasons you want to work there, such as their reputation, practice areas, company culture, or values.

Here are a few mistakes you should avoid making while crafting your cover letter:

1. Generic or Unfocused Content:

Avoid using a generic cover letter that could apply to any job. Tailor your content to the specific paralegal position and law firm/company you're applying to.

2. Grammatical and Spelling Errors:

Proofread your cover letter carefully to catch any grammatical or spelling mistakes. Errors can create a negative impression and indicate a lack of attention to detail.

3. Exaggeration or False Information:

Be honest about your skills, experiences, and qualifications. Avoid exaggerating or providing false information, as it can be easily verified during the hiring process.

4. Copying Resume Verbatim:

Your cover letter should complement your resume, not duplicate it. Use the cover letter to highlight key experiences and explain how they make you a suitable candidate.

5. Negative Language:

Ensure that you maintain a positive and professional tone throughout your cover letter. Never use negative language or criticize previous employers or experiences.

6. Lack of Research:

Demonstrate your interest in the law firm or company by conducting research and mentioning specific reasons why you want to work there. Try to avoid generic statements that could apply to any organization.

Things To Keep In Mind:

Include your contact information, recipient details, Date, and a formal salutation.

Use a professional font and appropriate font size, and adjust margins for a neat layout.

Submit your cover letter in PDF or DOCX format when applying online.

Highlight relevant skills such as legal research, document drafting, case management, and software proficiency.

Mention certifications, internships, and any specialized training related to paralegal work.

Customize your letter to the firm by explaining your interest and mentioning their practice areas or recent cases.

Avoid generic content; tailor your letter to the specific job and company.

Proofread for grammatical and spelling errors to maintain professionalism.

Be honest; do not exaggerate or provide false information.

How to write a Paralegal cover letter

Here’s how to write your own winning Paralegal cover letter

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When writing your Paralegal cover letter, it’s best to type the content into the body of your email (or the job site messaging system) and not to attach the cover letter as a separate document.

This ensures that your cover letter gets seen as soon as a recruiter or employer opens your message.

If you attach the cover letter as a document, you’re making the reader go through an unnecessary step of opening the document before reading it.

If it’s in the body of the message itself, it will be seen instantly, which hugely increases the chances of it being read.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Paralegal with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The bulk of your cover letter should be focused around highlighting your suitability for the job you are applying to.

Doing this will show the recruiter that you are suitable candidate and encourage them to open your CV.

The best way to do this, is by studying the job advert you are applying to, and find out what the most important skills and knowledge are.

Once you know the most important requirements, you then need to highlight your matching skills to the recruiter. In a few sentences, tell them exactly why you are a good fit for the job and what you can offer the company.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

When sending a job application to a recruiter or hiring manager, it is important to remember that they will normally be very busy and pushed for time.

Therefore, you need to get you message across to them quickly (in a matter of seconds ideally). So, keep your cover letter short and to-the-point. A long waffling cover letter will overwhelm recruiters when they are running through hundreds of emails in there inbox, but a concise one will get their attention.

So, keep your cover letter to just a few sentences long, and save the extensive detail for your CV.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • Emphasizing relevant experience, such as "managing complex cases and streamlining contract processes," directly aligns with the practical demands of a property law position. Showing how past work relates to the job at hand is crucial.
  • Detailing a specific accomplishment, like managing the financing and re-mortgaging of a high-profile property and increasing investments by 15%, provides tangible proof of the candidate's capability and success in a similar role.
  • Describing skillsets that are essential to the position, such as "legal document drafting" and "caseload management," assures the hiring manager that the candidate has the necessary technical competencies required for the role of a paralegal in property law.

What are the basics of the design or format of your paralegal cover letter?

To start, here's a reminder for you: the Applicant Tracker System (or software that is used to assess candidate profiles), won't be reading your paralegal cover letter.

Recruiters enjoy reading paralegal cover letters with a standardized format that uses:

  • the same font as the resume (e.g. modern ones like Raleway or Volkhov are prefered over the clichéd Times New Roman or Arial);
  • single spacing to keep the content concise and organized (this is all ready for you in our cover letter templates );
  • a one-inch margin to wrap around the text, like in our cover letter builder ;
  • PDF as a file format, as it allows your design (and visual element) to stay the same.

Finally, we can't go on without mentioning the key sections of your paralegal cover letter.

In the top one-third, make sure to include a header (with your contact information, name, role, and date), a salutation, and an introduction.

Next, follows the heart and soul of your paralegal cover letter or its body.

End your paralegal cover letter with a closing paragraph and, if you wish, a signature.

The top sections on a paralegal cover letter

Header with Contact Information: Essential to include so that the hiring manager can easily identify the candidate and know how to reach them for an interview.

Professional Greeting: Tailoring the greeting to the specific hiring manager or using a general but professional salutation sets a respectful tone for the cover letter.

Introduction with a Connection to Law: This should immediately engage the reader by highlighting the applicant's passion or connection to the legal field to differentiate themselves from other candidates.

Body Highlighting Relevant Skills and Experience: The body should provide specific examples of the candidate's legal knowledge, experience with legal documents, and any other law-related skills that would be beneficial in a paralegal role.

Closing with a Call to Action: In closing, the applicant should express their eagerness for an interview and proactively suggest follow-up, showing initiative and strong interest in the paralegal position.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

Proficiency in legal research and writing: Demonstrates the ability to locate and analyze legal precedents, draft legal documents, and succinctly summarize findings, which are fundamental components of legal assistance.

Attention to detail: Essential for reviewing and organizing complex legal documents, spotting errors, and ensuring that all filings comply with court procedures and deadlines.

Familiarity with legal software and technology: Shows competence in using case management systems, electronic discovery tools, and document management platforms, which increases efficiency in legal operations.

Knowledge of substantive and procedural law: Indicates a strong foundation in understanding the legal framework and court protocols, allowing paralegals to better support attorneys in case preparation and litigation processes.

Confidentiality and discretion: Paralegals often handle sensitive information, so it’s crucial to maintain client privacy and exhibit ethical judgment.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills: Paralegals coordinate with clients, attorneys, and other stakeholders, so the ability to convey information clearly and build professional relationships is vital.

How to personalize your paralegal cover letter greeting

Before you start writing your paralegal cover letter, take the time to find out who is recruiting for the role.

Search for the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or the corporate website to address them personally in your paralegal cover letter salutation .

What if you can't find out who's recruiting for the role?

Always aim to avoid the very impersonal "Dear Sir/Madam" - instead, opt out for "Dear HR Team" or "Dear Hiring Manager" to make a better first impression.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Law Firm Name] Team,
  • Dear [Specific Attorney's Name],
  • Dear Ms./Mr. [Last Name],
  • Dear Members of the [Department Name],
  • Dear Recruitment Committee,

Introducing your profile to catch recruiters' attention in no more than two sentences

The introduction of your paralegal cover letter is a whole Catch 22 .

You have an allocated space of no more than just a paragraph (of up to two sentences). With your introduction, you have to stand out and show why you're the best candidate out there.

Set out on a journey with your paralegal cover letter by focusing on why you're passionate about the job. Match your personal skills and interests to the role.

Another option for your paralegal cover letter introduction is to show you're the ideal candidate. Write about how your achievements and skills are precisely what the company is looking for.

However you decide to start your paralegal cover letter, always remember to write about the value you'd bring about. Making it both tangible (with your metrics of success) and highly sought out.

What comes next: your paralegal cover letter middle paragraphs

In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your paralegal cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .

Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.

That's one big no-no.

Remember that when writing your paralegal cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.

So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.

Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.

Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.

Ending your paralegal cover letter to avoid "Sincerely yours"

Yes, this sort of closing statement may work best before your signature.

But you want to give recruiters something more with your paralegal cover letter ending .

Some professionals choose to go down the path of promises. In a single sentence, they map out what they'd bring about to the role (whether that's a particular technical skill set or personal traits).

Others, decide to be more concrete by thanking recruiters for their time and prompting for their next interview.

Whatever path you choose, remember to always be polite and respectful of the opportunity you've had. Good manners go a long way.

Lacking experience: here's how to write your paralegal cover letter

As a candidate with no experience, it's important to be honest from the get-go of your application .

Use your paralegal cover letter to sell your unique talents. Choose an accomplishment from your academic background or your volunteer work to show the skills that are relevant to the role.

Focus on your career objectives and how you see the job to align with them. Be specific and, at the same time, realistic about where you picture yourself in five years.

Key takeaways

Winning recruiters over shouldn't be difficult if you use your paralegal cover letter to tell a story that:

  • Is personalized by greeting your readers and focusing on key job skills greets;
  • Isn't spread all over the place, but instead focuses on one key achievement and selling your value as a professional;
  • Introduces your enthusiasm for the role, passion for the job, or creativity in communication;
  • Is also visually appealing - meeting the best HR practices;
  • Ends with a nod to the future and how you envision your growth, as part of the company.

The Hilariously Stupid Emails Between Trump's Lawyer & The Judge Over His Closing Argument Request

This is a model in how not to get the judge to grant an unusual request..

President-Elect Donald Trump Holds Press Conference In New York

On January 4, as the court sought logistical details for the upcoming closing arguments in Trump’s New York fraud trial, former Florida Solicitor General Chris Kise — who left a perfectly good Biglaw partnership to represent Trump, nonchalantly dropped this ticking time bomb, “additionally, president trump plans to present argument at closing as well.”

This kicked off a string of correspondence — available here — that was all very, very stupid.

Rise Above Redlines: How AI Is Setting A New Benchmark For Contracting

Rise Above Redlines: How AI Is Setting A New Benchmark For Contracting

Traditionally, defendants don’t make closing arguments unless they’re pro se , something that Kise surely knew before trying to slip this past the goalie complete with casually failing to capitalize “president trump.”

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, amirite?

Shocking absolutely no one, the NYAG’s office noticed the request and responded less than 5 hours later:

Mr. Trump is certainly not permitted to do so as of right. Under the CPLR if a party “appears by attorney such party may not act in person in the action except by consent of the court.” CPLR 321(a).

Raising The Bar in Bar Prep

That said, the letter notes that Justice Arthur Engoron could grant an exception to this rule as long as it would not disrupt the administration of justice. And had this been a jury trial, the judge would have almost certainly dropkicked Trump’s request into the stratosphere. However, given that this is a bench trial, Engoron offered the defendant some flexibility in his next day response:

Particularly in a non-jury trial, I am inclined to let everyone have his or her say. Moreover, the more reasoned analysis I receive, the better I will be able to decide the case correctly. Furthermore, Mr. Trump is the person with by far the most at stake in this enforcement action.

Fair enough. Though, given the nature of the proceedings up until this point, the judge set a few simple ground rules and would grant the request “if, and only if, through counsel by 1/9/2024, and by himself, personally, on the record, just before he speaks, he agrees to limit his subjects to what is permissible in a counsel’s closing argument….”

In relevant part:

1. Commentary on the relevant, material facts that are in evidence, and application of the relevant law to those facts. 2. No new evidence 3. No “testimony” 4. No commentary on irrelevant matters. 5. No campaign speeches 6. No impugning the judge, the court’s staff, the plaintiff, the plaintiff’s staff, or the New York State Court System.

How Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel Battles The ‘1,000 Papercuts’ Of Legal Work

As these are all straightforward rules that, frankly, apply just as well to every attorney giving a closing argument, Kise would obviously have known before sending his quasi-request that his client would be asked to adhere to these rules and must therefore have already prepared Trump to know that his request would only have a hope of being granted based on rules like these.

Oh my sweet summer child, no.

Yesterday, January 9, Kise replied:

further, the preconditions and prior restraints you propose are fraught with ambiguities, creating the substantial likelihood for misinterpretation or unintended violation. for example, the notion he could not comment on the AG, the plaintiff , is simply untenable. moreover, given the history of these proceedings, agreement to such ambiguous limitations will no doubt simply create further disagreements.

“He could not comment on the AG”? What does Kise think happens in an oral argument? Are Florida closings just diss tracks of the prosecutors?

At 1:23, Engoron writes:

Anyone can comment on the arguments of an opposing party or counsel, but may not seek to impugn their character. Of course I will apply common sense if there is any issue or doubt, but I will not let anyone violate the normal rules of courtroom procedure that govern closing arguments. The limitations I am imposing, in my absolute discretion, are not subject to further debate. Take it or leave it. Please let me know which by 4:00 pm today.

Spoiler, Kise did not respond by 4. At 4:16 Engoron denied the request and at 4:18, Kise asked for an extension.

Usually you ask for those first.

This is also when news outlets started to report that Trump was planning to deliver closing arguments. Who leaked this? Perish the thought that Trump’s legal team might do it despite knowing that they had yet to secure approval from the judge!

Donald Trump is not a pro se litigant. This is just a sham tactic to have the judge deny him the request thereby giving Trump another political talking point about how “unfair” his trial was in New York. https://t.co/CjiEV6Qc41 — Anthony Michael Kreis (@AnthonyMKreis) January 10, 2024

Though, as it turned out, Engoron was prepared to offer the defendant a platform. But Trump wasn’t seemingly prepared to agree to the particulars. However, having seen Justice Alito SOMEONE successfully use a premature leak to lock a court into an opinion, perhaps those “sources” thought Engoron couldn’t possibly deny Trump now that word is out that he’s “planning” to talk.

A few hours after this story started making the rounds, Kise added a request that the closing argument by delayed until January 29 because Melania’s mother passed away. Notably, Kise does NOT respond to the ground rules issue.Mere hours ago, Justice Engoron denied this request given the logistical challenges and ordered the closing to continue tomorrow.

At 10:51 a.m. this morning, Kise wrote back:

Despite the fact that his Mother-in Law, who he was very close to, passed away late last night, President Trump will be speaking tomorrow.

OK, so Trump wrote this, right? Couching the acquiescence as if he’s the one doing the court a favor is classic art of the deal seminar talk and the little “who he was very close to” clause is a hallmark of his style up there with “a lot of people are saying.”

But more to the point, the email asserts “President Trump will be speaking tomorrow” despite Kise being fully aware that he’d confirmed that Trump would comply with the conditions set out by the court. I guess when you’re a star, you assume they let you do it.

Accordingly, this declaratory statement was, of course, news to Engoron, who responded six minutes later:

As I have already indicated to you, if Mr. Trump wishes to speak, pursuant to CPLR 321, you will have to tell me NOW that he will agree to the limitations I have imposed, which go without saying and apply to everyone, and he will have to agree to do so tomorrow, on the record, which should take no more than a minute or two.

An hour later, Kise responds:

This is very unfair, your Honor. You are not allowing President Trump, who has been wrongfully demeaned and belittled by an out of control, politically motivated Attorney General, to speak about the things that must be spoken about.

If it weren’t for the fact that this isn’t in ALL CAPS, I’d think Trump hacked Kise’s email. “To speak about the things that must be spoken about”? No lawyer wrote that. Period.

For no particular reason, this might be a good time to remind NY attorneys of their ethical obligations when clients want to make frivolous arguments . You know… apropos of nothing at all.

Engoron granted Kise another 7 minutes to confirm that Trump would comply with the ground rules if he wanted to speak.

Not having heard from you by the third extended deadline (noon today), I assume that Mr. Trump will not agree to the reasonable, lawful limits I have imposed as a precondition to giving a closing statement above and beyond those given by his attorneys, and that, therefore, he will not be speaking in court tomorrow.

Arthur Engoron is a reasonable man at the very end of his rope, y’all. This case can’t be over fast enough. For his sake.

Thank you for sharing.

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney and community leader Joseph R. Bankoff after his passing at the age of 78.

After his admission to the Georgia Bar in 1972, Mr. Bankoff began his legal career at the King & Spalding law firm, where he would work for 34 years. He focused his law practice in the early years on media and First Amendment law, representing news networks, major national newspapers and other outlets in various types of cases, one of which resulted in a successful U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1975.

Joe Bankoff, chairman of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech, was the keynote speaker.

What Exactly Is a Paralegal?

Paralegals and legal assistants are professionals who work behind the scenes on a variety of tasks that support lawyers. A paralegal may work in private law firms, in non-profit organizations, within a government agency, or in many other environments.

What Does the Day-to-Day Look Like for a Paralegal?

While no two paralegals have the exact same daily routine, most people in the paralegal profession serve functions such as: helping with trial prep, drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, and communicating with clients. Paralegals are not licensed to practice law, but they perform many tasks to prepare and organize legal processes.

What is the Job Market for Paralegals Today?

Salary info.

As of 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the median pay for paralegals was $29.31 per hour. Higher salaries are possible based on location, education, and experience.

Current Demand and Trends

Demand for paralegals and legal assistants is on the rise, as law firms find more and more ways to leverage paralegals’ skills and give them more responsibility, freeing up lawyers to do the specific work they are licensed to do. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of paralegals to grow 14% through 2031 — faster than the national average.

Paralegal Job Satisfaction

Professionals who are detail-oriented, organized, self-motivated, and passionate about law are most likely to find immense job satisfaction as paralegals and legal assistants. The paralegal profession consistently ranks as a coveted job due to factors such as positive work environments, low stress levels, opportunities for growth, and flexible work-life balance — plus, paralegals make a positive impact in the world.

How Do You Become a Paralegal?

Step #1: complete your paralegal education.

If your focus is on earning higher salaries, you’ll want to enter the field with a strong education. It is important to earn your associate degree or bachelor’s degree from a program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) . You can also earn a post-associate or post-baccalaureate certificate if your studies are in another field; these post-degree programs requires one additional year of study, but puts you on a track to success.

Many students prefer a fully-online program, such as the University of Cincinnati’s online Associate or Bachelor of Applied Business in Law & Paralegal Studies; flexible programs such as these make it possible for you to study while also raising a family or continuing employment.

Step #2: Which type of law is right for you?

Paralegals and legal assistants work in every corner of law, including family law, real estate, corporate law, and beyond. Take the time to understand which area of the legal profession interests you the most — when the time comes to apply for internships and jobs, this step will be key.

Step #3: Will you pursue paralegal certification? (Optional!)

Perhaps you already have paralegal experience. In this case, you can earn professional certification after just a year of on-the-job training. Graduation from a paralegal certificate program can help you stand out against other candidates, and can qualify you for more advanced roles in the legal field.

Common paralegal certifications include: the CP exam (Certified Paralegal), the PP (Professional Paralegal), the PCCE (Paralegal CORE Competency Exam), and the AACP (American Alliance Certified Paralegal).

Step #4: Be sure to meet state-level paralegal requirements

The laws of every state are different, and a good paralegal will be very comfortable with the specific laws of the state or states where they work. Law firms may even have requirements for exams and certifications that are state-specific; inquire within each law firm you apply to, to be certain.

Step #5: Time to earn real-world paralegal experience

Though you’ll certainly earn real-world experience after you find a job, it can be useful to get your foot in the door beforehand as well. You can gain this experience as a law firm’s volunteer, intern, or secretary, and some paralegal studies programs can guide you through finding the right training for your specific interests and career goals.

Step #6: Interview and work toward your career goals!

With your education and experience in hand, you now have the chance to begin your career as a paralegal. Of course, you may continue your education in order to gain higher earning potential and higher level responsibilities – the choice is yours!

What Are the Requirements to Become a Paralegal?

In order to become a paralegal , it is beneficial to have strong communication skills, the ability to multitask, and a high attention to detail. Other recommended skills include writing, organizing, communicating with clients, and working well with others, as paralegals tend to operate within a larger team.

How Long Does It Take?

If you already hold an associate degree or bachelor degree in another field, you may consider a post-degree certificate for one additional year of study. Otherwise, programs like the University of Cincinnati’s online Associate or Bachelor of Applied Business in Law & Paralegal Studies tend to require 2-4 years of study, done completely online and on your own schedule. Our program can be completed full- or part-time as well, for additional flexibility.

Chaos and Confusion: Tech Outage Causes Disruptions Worldwide

Airlines, hospitals and people’s computers were affected after CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company, sent out a flawed software update.

A view from above of a crowded airport with long lines of people.

  • July 19, 2024

Airlines grounded flights. Operators of 911 lines could not respond to emergencies. Hospitals canceled surgeries. Retailers closed for the day. And the actions all traced back to a batch of bad computer code.

A flawed software update sent out by a little-known cybersecurity company caused chaos and disruption around the world on Friday. The company, CrowdStrike , based in Austin, Texas, makes software used by multinational corporations, government agencies and scores of other organizations to protect against hackers and online intruders.

But when CrowdStrike sent its update on Thursday to its customers that run Microsoft Windows software, computers began to crash.

The fallout, which was immediate and inescapable, highlighted the brittleness of global technology infrastructure. The world has become reliant on Microsoft and a handful of cybersecurity firms like CrowdStrike. So when a single flawed piece of software is released over the internet, it can almost instantly damage countless companies and organizations that depend on the technology as part of everyday business.

“This is a very, very uncomfortable illustration of the fragility of the world’s core internet infrastructure,” said Ciaran Martin, the former chief executive of Britain’s National Cyber Security Center and a professor at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University.

A cyberattack did not cause the widespread outage, but the effects on Friday showed how devastating the damage can be when a main artery of the global technology system is disrupted. It raised broader questions about CrowdStrike’s testing processes and what repercussions such software firms should face when flaws in their code cause major disruptions.

  1. How to Write a Paralegal Cover Letter & Resume (With Examples!)

When crafting your paralegal cover letter, first focus on the main purpose of the letter. A cover letter is also a great opportunity to get creative and highlight useful skills in the legal industry.

  2. Paralegal Cover Letter Example & Expert Tips

Here's how to properly format your paralegal cover letter: Choose a professional cover letter font that's easy to read. Set your font size at 10.5-12 points. Adjust your cover letter margins to 1"-1.5". If you're applying online, submit your cover letter in PDF or DOCX format.

  3. Paralegal Cover Letter Examples + Template for 2024

A valediction with a powerful call to action. A complimentary close (e.g., Sincerely) and your name. Optionally, a postscript (P.S.) after your signature block. Keep your entry-level paralegal cover letter to around 200-300 words. If you have some paralegal or legal assistant experience, slightly more is fine.
