  • Early universe
  • Galaxies and clusters

The Cosmic Gems arc is among the brightest and highly magnified galaxies observed at redshift z ∼ 10.2 1 . However, it is an intrinsically UV faint galaxy, in the range of those now thought to drive the reionization of the universe 2–4 . Hitherto the smallest features resolved in a galaxy at a comparable redshift are between a few hundreds and a few tens of parsecs 5,6 . Here we report JWST observations of the Cosmic Gems. The light of the galaxy is resolved into five star clusters located in a region smaller than 70 parsec. They exhibit minimal dust attenuation and low metallicity, ages younger than 50 Myr and intrinsic masses of ∼ 10 6 M ⊙ . Their lensing-corrected sizes are approximately 1 pc, resulting in stellar surface densities near 10 5 M ⊙ /pc 2 , three orders of magnitude higher than typical young star clusters in the local universe 7 . Despite the uncertainties inherent to the lensing model, they are consistent with being gravitationally bound stellar systems, i.e., proto-globular clusters (proto-GCs). We conclude that star cluster formation and feedback likely contributed to 3 shape the properties of galaxies during the epoch of reionization.

Open Call for Papers - Journal of Work-Applied Management

About the journal

The Journal of Work-Applied Management (JWAM) promotes management insights generated at the nexus of practice and theory, where change, discovery and innovation are driven by work-based, work-applied, collaborative, and experiential approaches such as case-based, reflective and action-oriented research methodologies.    The aim of the journal is to share practical ‘work-applied’ management insights relevant to managers in private, public and community organisations; share ‘work-applied’ management insights relevant to academics seeking to improve work-based, work-applied, collaborative, and experiential approaches and to translate and challenge new developments in the use of case-based, reflective and action-oriented research methodologies    On behalf of the editorial team, we would like to invite papers examining topics from across the journal's scope for submission. The main aim of the journal is to bring together scholars, researchers, educators, students, professionals and other groups who are interested in work applied management.    Typical areas of interest include:

  • Work-based learning - at all levels and from differing perspectives
  • Case-based studies and action-oriented research approaches
  • Reflective and experiential research approaches
  • Approaches to facilitate change and transition in organisations
  • Approaches to collaborative or integrated partnership working

Author Guidelines

Please feel free to discuss your manuscript ideas with any of the Editors above.    Details of the length of the submission are located within the author guidelines: https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/journal/jwam#author-guidelines   Articles should be a maximum of 7,000 words in length. This includes all text including references and appendices. Please allow 280 words for each figure or table. Authors must categorize their paper as part of the ScholarOne submission process. The category which most closely describes their paper should be selected from the list below:    Research Study .  These articles may report applied research studies (for example, action research, action learning, reflective approaches), or research that has important implications for managers and/or those working in the field of work-based, work-applied, collaborative, and experiential change approaches.

  • Case Study.  These articles describe actual interventions or experiences within organizations.  These may be shorter than the other types of articles, and as such, might be useful for teaching materials for work-based, work-applied or vocational programmes in higher education.
  • Literature Review Study.  These articles utilize literature and systematic reviews as the primary or sole method of the paper.  The aim is to synthesise and critique existing literature in order to generate new understandings.  It might also include an overview or historical examination of some concept, technique or phenomenon.  The key is to ensure the article links to the aims and scope of the journal.
  • Conceptual Study.  These articles will utilise existing literature (rather than original primary data) to develop new ideas, proposals for ways of working, or calls to develop new areas of practice.
  • Viewpoint.  These are articles that share, translate, or challenge a particular opinion or interpretation of a situation, problem, or solution (conceptual and technical product or service) which are important to workapplied learning and management.  These may be shorter than other types of articles, and as such, might be useful for teaching materials for work-based, work-applied or vocational programmes in higher education.

Please note you do not have access to teaching notes, research journal articles as document genres: exploring their role in knowledge organization.

Journal of Documentation

ISSN : 0022-0418

Article publication date: 18 January 2008

The purpose of this paper is to outline how article genres, or article types, are classified and described in the disciplines of biology, education, and software engineering. By using the expression article genres, emphasis is placed on the social role of journal articles that, as such, accomplish specific communicative functions and are intended for a certain context and audience.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on this idea, the instructions to authors of the research journals cited in the Journal Citation Reports for each of the three disciplines are analysed.

The information provided by the instructions to authors of major publications in the fields studied allows one to describe the following article genres: major articles, theoretical articles, review articles, short articles, practice‐oriented articles, case studies, comment and opinion, and reviews.

Research limitations/implications

Results show that article genres reflect the nature of research in each field to the extent that using them to describe items along with topic may improve management and retrieval of scientific documents. In addition, article genres perform specific communicative functions within disciplinary communities, which accounts for both emerging types of articles and variations in traditional types.

Originality/value

The paper summarizes the information on article genres available in the instructions to authors of scientific journals in the disciplines of biology, education and software engineering. It attempts to show how results can mirror the nature of research in each field as well as current debates within each discipline on the state and quality of research. Also it shows how article genres convey specific communication needs within disciplinary communities, which proves that genres are social and evolving objects.
