“blitz” events promote student enrollment in gaston county schools.
GASTONIA, N.C. – Gaston County Schools is taking its student enrollment process on the road to make it more convenient for families to register their children for school. Representatives will be at four community locations over the next two weeks to conduct the school district’s “Student Enrollment Blitz.”
The community locations, dates, and times are listed below:
- Monday, July 15, Erwin Center, 913 N. Pryor Street, Gastonia, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- Wednesday, July 17, Creekside Estates, 204 Chinook Road, Bessemer City, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
- Monday, July 22, Dallas Gym, 208 W. Church Street, Dallas, 10 a.m. - 3p.m.
- Wednesday, July 24, Lineberger Park, 632 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
To register at one of the “Student Enrollment Blitz” locations, parents/guardians should bring their ID along with a copy of their child’s birth certificate and health records, and two proofs of residence. No appointment is needed. When participants arrive at the “Blitz” location, they should look for the Gaston County Schools registration tents and an activity school bus.
The “Student Enrollment Blitz” concept is designed to take the registration process into communities rather than having families come to the Student Assignment Office in Gastonia or complete enrollment online. Additionally, the “Blitz” is a way for families to take care of enrollment now instead of in August prior to the start of school when in-person and online enrollment is busy. Registering early also makes it easier for schools when assigning students to classes and planning for the first day, which is Wednesday, August 14.
If families cannot make it to one of the “Blitz” events, they can still register in person and online ( www.gaston.k12.nc.us – click on the “How to Enroll” tab). In-person registration takes place at the Student Assignment Office, which is located at the former Forest Heights Elementary School in Gastonia. The office is open Monday - Thursday from 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. (closed on Friday) now through July 26. Regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) resume on July 29. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration
Gaston county schools conducting online registration for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten.
It’s time for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten registration in Gaston County Schools! Because of the coronavirus pandemic, parents are asked to complete the registration process online.
■ Kindergarten Registration For kindergarten, a child must be five years old on or before August 31, 2020. Parents should register online: www.gaston.k12.nc.us/ kindergartenregistration
Parents/guardians must provide the following to register for kindergarten:
▪ Birth certificate or proof of parentage ▪ Valid ID of parent/guardian who is registering the child ▪ Two proofs of current address (such as power, water, gas, cable, internet, or landline telephone bills, lease, or mortgage) ▪ An up-to-date immunization/shot record ▪ Health assessment form completed on or after August 26, 2019 by a certified health care professional
Kindergarten registration continues throughout the summer, but parents are encouraged to go ahead and register now, which helps our elementary schools with planning for next year.
■ Pre-Kindergarten Registration For pre-kindergarten, a child must be four years old on or before August 31, 2020. Parents should register online: www.gaston.k12.nc.us/ prekindergarten
Parents/guardians must provide the following to register for pre-kindergarten:
▪ Birth certificate or proof of parentage ▪ Valid ID of parent/guardian who is registering the child ▪ Two proofs of current address (such as power, water, gas, cable, internet, or landline telephone bills, lease, or mortgage) ▪ An up-to-date immunization/shot record ▪ Health assessment form completed on or after August 26, 2019 by a certified health care professional ▪ Proof of income for the parent/guardian living in the home with the child (a recent check stub is preferred).
Pre-kindergarten is offered at various school and community locations across Gaston County. Parents are reminded that registering a child for pre-kindergarten does not guarantee that the child will be placed in the program. The district has limited pre-kindergarten space at each location. The deadline to apply for pre-kindergarten is June 15.

Gaston County departments hosting back to school events
Back to school preparation is on the horizon, and Gaston County departments are coming together to host several related events including a hiring roadshow, back to school bingo, and a vaccine clinic.
Here’s what we know about the three events:
Hiring Roadshow
From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. July 22, the Gaston County Public Library will host district officials looking to recruit employees for several positions.
According to a press release from the district, those openings include:
- Classroom teachers
- Substitute teachers
- Teacher assistants
- Bus drivers/transportation
- Maintenance personnel and custodians
- School nutrition/cafeteria workers
- Clerical/office staff
- Coaches (sports)
No appointments are necessary to attend the event.
“Representatives will be available to discuss job opportunities, review the hiring process, and answer questions. Call 704-866-6129 for more information,” the release said.
Back to School Bingo
Families are invited to celebrate parks and recreation month and win school supply prizes at this free event.
The games will begin at 6 p.m. July 26 at the Citizens Resource Center 1303 Dallas Cherryville Highway in Dallas.
Vaccine Clinics
The Gaston County Health Department will partner with the school district to host two vaccine clinics to help parents ensure their children have the vaccinations needed to start the school year, the release said.
The events will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 27 and Aug. 17 at the health department office, 991 W. Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia.
Parents can schedule an appointment by calling 704-853-5000.
The release said parents should bring a copy of their child’s immunization/shot record and proof of insurance.
Medicaid is accepted, and children who do not have insurance may qualify for free vaccinations, it said.
