Sometimes, it’s hard to be happy when you think about negative things that are happening in the world. It’s harder still when the people around you are constantly talking about all those negative things. But you don't have to join ranks with the pessimists. In fact, it's extra important to be optimistic when there's negativity surrounding you.

Being optimistic means that you possess an overall positive outlook of the world, trusting that good things will happen and that people's desires will be fulfilled. On the other hand, being pessimistic means you assume a negative outlook of the world.

While most people fall somewhere in the middle between being a complete optimist and being a complete pessimist, we usually favor one outlook over the other. Learn how infusing some optimism into your life can benefit your health.

Benefits of Optimism

Choosing to be optimistic offers surprising benefits. These include:

  • Confidence : Optimism is linked with increased levels of confidence, especially when it comes to making decisions and feeling secure with the choices you make.
  • Decreased risk of illness : A study from the University of Pittsburgh concluded that women who had an optimistic outlook had a 30% lower risk of heart disease. A University of Michigan study linked optimism to a lower risk of stroke.

If you think you’re a natural-born pessimist and there’s no way you can turn your mindset around, think again—research published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry compared two groups of people to test their thinking patterns.

The first group completed a 5-minute exercise that involved thinking positive thoughts about their future, while the second group just went about their daily lives without making effort to think optimistically. The first group significantly increased their optimism over the two-week period, with many of them feeling more optimistic after just one day.

If you want to become a more optimistic person—despite the negativity surrounding you—then you can take measures to think positively and spread that optimistic outlook to those around you.

You have choices in your life. You can spend the day cleaning or spend the day reading. You can go out to dinner or cook at home. You can have coffee with a friend or you can blow them off.

And, finally, you can decide to be positive or you can just go on living like you are. Being an optimistic person in a negative world begins with the decision to be positive and choosing to live that life every single day.

You might refer to them as "whiners" or even " toxic ," but however you think of them, pessimists tend to suck the positive energy out of the room.

It’s important to establish healthy boundaries with people who chronically choose to stay stuck in their own misery, especially if they don't show empathy for others.

That may mean having to say things to a friend like, "I notice every time I offer you an idea about how you could make your situation better, you insist nothing will work. I am not sure I’m able to help." It may also mean distancing yourself a bit from a relative who insists on sharing their latest predictions about the end of the world.

You may also consider limiting your media intake. Watching too many tragic stories on the news or consuming too much political news on social media can decrease your ability to maintain an optimistic outlook. Informed, but not overwhelmed should be the goal.

It’s OK to acknowledge that bad things might happen. After all, ignoring reality isn’t helpful. In fact, being realistic could be the key to doing your best. If you’re excessively positive about an upcoming interview, you might not spend any time preparing because you’re confident you’ll land the job.

If, however, you have an excessively negative outlook, you might sabotage your chances of getting hired. Thinking, "No one will ever hire me," for example, can cause you to look and feel defeated when you walk into the interview room. Your lack of confidence may be the reason you don’t get hired.

A healthy outlook would be to remind yourself that all you can do is your best and you’ll be OK, regardless of the outcome.

Being optimistic helps you believe that brighter opportunities are on the horizon and you’re able to put in the effort to earn those opportunities. When you’re thinking negatively, take a moment to assess how realistic your thoughts truly are.

Reframing your overly negative thoughts into more realistic statements can help you maintain a healthy dose of optimism.

While it’s not your job to make everyone happy, it doesn’t hurt to perk up someone’s day. Once a day, share positive feedback with someone.

At work, compliment someone about a good question raised in an email or salient points that they brought up in an important meeting. At home, praise your child for how hard they worked on their math homework. Or, tell your partner how much you appreciate them.

Making other people feel positive has lasting effects on your own life.  

With that, don’t forget to bestow positivity on yourself. Before bed, think about what you did during the day. Even if it was a generally lackluster day, there’s bound to be something you can praise yourself for, whether it was keeping your cool when a driver cut you off or wrapping up a project that had really been a challenge for you.

It sounds kitschy, but writing down your ideas of an optimistic future can truly make a difference when it comes to your overall outlook. If you need a primer, here’s what to do: Spend 20 minutes on four consecutive days writing down what you want to happen tomorrow, next week, next month and next year—feel free to dream big.

Consider a serious challenge you have in your life right now and think about possible positive outcomes.

Thinking about all the things you have to be grateful for, from warm sunshine to clean water, can give you an instant boost of optimism. You might even decide to keep a gratitude journal , in which you write down everything that makes you crack a smile during the day.  

If nothing else, take a moment to stop, smile and be grateful for the good things in your life.

It’s hard to be optimistic without feeling gratitude toward those that helped you get to that happy place. While thinking about how grateful you are is helpful, sharing your gratitude with others provides added benefits. You’ll spread a bit of joy and cheer when you tell others how much you appreciate them.

Write a letter to someone who made a positive impact on your life, whether it’s a teacher, a former boss or even your mom. If possible, deliver that letter in person.

Though it can be hard to remain positive in the face of obstacles, remember that optimism is a skill you can learn. Start with one small step. Maybe you choose to catch yourself the next time you're dwelling on a negative thought and swap in a positive thought instead.

Optimism: Definition, Importance, and Meaning Essay

Optimism is a trait that each of us should have, given its importance as a human personality. Although it is often ignored or taken lightly, optimism helps people to see opportunity during difficulties. By definition, optimism implies reacting to problems with a great sense of confidence and high personal ability. Winston Churchill’s said that a pessimist sees great difficulties in all opportunities, while an optimist is able to see opportunity in every difficulty (Scheier and Carver 1082). Recently, studies have tried to understand the impacts of optimism in both animal models and humans.

Most empirical research studies demonstrate that optimism has multiple advantages and impacts on humans. For instance, it improves immunity, prevent and halt the progression of certain chronic diseases, and help individuals cope with shocks and traumas. Closely associated with optimism is gratitude, which has also been shown to have such impacts as happiness, reduction of stress and depression, and improved social integration of people (Scheier and Carver 1082). The antonym of optimism is pessimism, which is closely associated with doubting and loss of hope. People with a high level of pessimism tend to score low on optimism. In turn, they achieve minimally, given that they do not have the ‘high spirits’ a characteristic associated with optimism. Consequently, it is arguable that optimism is a trait that we should all try to achieve, despite our personality differences, as a means of improving our health, relationships, and ability to tackle problems and difficulties in everyday life.

Normally, people do not pay much attention to what optimism entails. Indeed, few people take time to think about being optimistic in their daily activities. Rather, the common human behavior is to lose confidence or freak out when faced with difficult situations. Instead of reacting to problems with a sense of confidence and ability, we tend to develop hopelessness as we believe that we will eventually lose or fail to fight to the end (Scheier and Carver 1082). In essence, humans assume behavior that portrays the opposite of optimism. Therefore, people should be made aware of the importance of being optimistic at all times and the physiological, cognitive, and social benefits of optimism.

At this juncture, it is necessary to consider some of the proven benefits and impacts of optimism that people should be taught. Optimistic people tend to develop the belief that negative events are transient, manageable, and limited in their scope. Such people do not try to evade every aspect of a difficult situation. Optimism exists on a continuum, just like many other psychological characteristics and states common in humans (Gupta and Sagar 509). People who have low optimism scores can change and raise their levels depending 0n the prevailing situation. Those at the higher end of the optimism spectrum are optimists, while those on the lower end tend to be pessimists.

One of the major themes that appear in most of the recent studies about optimism that I have seen relate to its health impacts. Researchers have examined the various health benefits of optimism. Some researchers have found that every point increase in an individual’s optimism score decreases the risk of early death. It was found that people with chronic diseases and those at risk of sudden death, such as smokers, reduce their chances of dying by a significant margin when their confidence levels increase on the optimism scale (Biber et al. 1948). Such studies indicate that personality and psychological characteristics, as shown by the level of optimism, can play a significant role in protecting people from early and sudden death. In essence, optimism and the related characteristics such as confidence and hopefulness produce protective effect to people at risk of death.

Additional studies have shown that optimism plays an important role in the recovery process, especially during disease and illnesses. In particular, chronic diseases like cancer are widely considered when conducting such studies. In general, the outcomes of these research projects have suggested a strong link between high levels of optimism and minimal experience of distress even when facing potentially life-threating diagnosis and painful treatments. Cancer patients with a superior fighting spirit tend to have better quality of life several months after treatment for various forms of cancer.

Moreover, other studies have shown that high levels of optimism tend to predict minimal disruption of normal life, fatigue, and distress on people undergoing painful treatment of diseases like cancer (Philbin and Perez-Brumer 72). The characteristic, together with confidence and state of high hopes, appear to protect people against an urge to withdraw from certain social activities that are important to the healing process. Those with high levels of optimism are able to be more mindful of their welfare. Moreover, additional studies have shown that such individuals achieve high sleep quality, which is important in the healing process. Other studies have examined the relationship between optimism and the development of chronic diseases. Results from such studies indicate that people with low levels of optimism or those with high scores of pessimisms are more likely to experience such conditions as thickening arteries, which is a risk to cardiac diseases and early death.

Optimism is also associated with an improved immune system. For elderly people, those who receive immunization against such diseases as influenza develop immunity after a few weeks if they have high levels of optimism. Immune responses seem to have a strong link with high levels of confidence and optimism in people living with conditions that attract stigmatization in their societies. For example, some studies have shown that high levels of confidence and optimism in people living with HIV tend to confer higher immune responses than those with high levels of pessimism. It has been established that optimistic people with HIV tend to have low mortality rates and a slow progression of the infection. Such people achieve high levels of helper T cells, which are immune cells in the body that plays a major role in suppressing the progression of HIV (Scheier and Carver 1082). Optimistic people’s immune system increases significantly when faced with life threatening conditions such as development of another condition such as asthma and diabetes. Since they have always been confident and optimism, they tend to use the same perceptions and spirit to fight the new health challenges facing them.

Psychologically, optimism plays an important role in giving people energy and raising their spirits when coping with difficult life events and challenges. It has been linked to better responses to mild and extreme events such as missile attacks and terrorism. It has a protective role in which people use extraordinary methods of coping with disasters, violence, and other traumatizing events. Moreover, it strongly correlates with self-esteem and life satisfaction (Scheier and Carver 1082). These findings suggest that optimism is related to positive effect, implying that people high confidence levels have happier lives even when they are facing challenges.

In conclusion, I think we have always ignored the importance of being optimistic in our lives. People tend to shy away or fear facing challenges and difficult situations. Without optimism, people will not develop high spirits to fight problems and issues in life. Instead, they shy avoid taking steps to improve the situation, which ends in losing. On the contrary, those with high levels of optimism are likely to have the spirit to challenge the problems coming their way, eventually winning the battle for survival.

Optimism Makes you See the World Better

When I hear the word optimism, many memories and definitions come into my mind. As a little girl, I used to mention many times these words but those times I didn’t know their meaning. Probably I heard it from the adults and I used to repeat it to convince my parents that I was growing up and I could understand more things than they thought I could. Now I know the special and powerful meaning that this word carries. Optimism is a general disposition to expect the best in all the things or to have the feeling that everything is going to turn out well.

Someone who does that, has more chances to be happy than the others. I think that I always used to be optimistic. I still think that good person will be recompensed for their good actions and the evil ones will be punished for their evil actions. The right is right and it is worthy. It can not be kept hidden. In other words I agree with the thought that good defeats the evil in the world.

Someone could say that this is the way of thinking of a child but he would be wrong. I do not agree with that but even if it really were what is wrong with seeing the world as a child does? It would be wonderful to be characterized by the energy of children. This is the way of thinking of an optimistic person.

Life is full of difficulties and I think that the ones who have more chances to pass through them successfully are the optimistic people. I always appreciated them and tried to learn the way they see life. What they expected from life and what they expected from themselves.

I consider myself optimistic because I have the disposition to look out for the more favorable side of the circumstances and people. An example of that is that I always try to see the best in my friends. Even when one of them doesn’t act correctly, I try to comprehend him. I keep in mind a good image of him trying to justify till a certain point his action with the difficulty of the circumstances. This fact makes me a confident and hopeful person. I really enjoy being someone like that. The day seems better and goes on better if you start it with optimistic smiles. That is how I start my new activities. In general people are afraid of new things. This is not good because the anxiety can turn into a real problem and become an obstacle for the future. This does not happen to me. Every time I start a new activity I think about it with hope and joy. I think about it as something positive for my future. This makes the thing easier to be handled. This attitude gives you the opportunity to succeed in your commitments. If you expect a favorable outcome from the activities that you perform you have more probabilities to come out with success than the others.

To begin something with enthusiasm gives you courage to go straight away without being disturbed. Anxiety and fear for the future are the reasons that do not allow someone to achieve his goals. Some people think that the optimism doesn’t allow you to see how things really are. It makes you expect only the best and there is a great risk of disappointment. I do not think so. In my opinion it helps you to face different problems in a positive way and as a result to solve them.

Optimism gives you force and courage from the inside. I have my personal experience on that. Every time I get disappointed from an experience, I do not stay all time crying over it. I try to gather the best by defying all the good and bad things I learned from it. When I come into a difficult situation, I expect it to teach me worthy things for my life even if apparently all seems going bad. We all have to think that these kinds of situations bring strength, experience and commitment to do your best. The way to prove optimism is the challenge. If someone is capable to walk straight through challenges with faith and courage, we can definitely consider him an optimistic person. Most the people don’t do that. Only a certain part of the society performs like that and I consider myself a part of it.

I enjoy being optimistic because this fact brings positive energy to my life. There is nothing wrong with seeing the world where we live better than it is. Optimism stays much closed with happiness which means that you have a feeling or a state of mind characterized by contentment, love, pleasure or joy. Thinking positively can improve stress management, productivity and what is most important, your health. The emotional health is the main factor of success or failure. For everyone is good to see the others smiling at him.
