One of the most important aspects of a thesis, dissertation or research paper is the correct formulation of the aims and objectives. This is because your aims and objectives will establish the scope, depth and direction that your research will ultimately take. An effective set of aims and objectives will give your research focus and your reader clarity, with your aims indicating what is to be achieved, and your objectives indicating how it will be achieved.

Introduction

There is no getting away from the importance of the aims and objectives in determining the success of your research project. Unfortunately, however, it is an aspect that many students struggle with, and ultimately end up doing poorly. Given their importance, if you suspect that there is even the smallest possibility that you belong to this group of students, we strongly recommend you read this page in full.

This page describes what research aims and objectives are, how they differ from each other, how to write them correctly, and the common mistakes students make and how to avoid them. An example of a good aim and objectives from a past thesis has also been deconstructed to help your understanding.

What Are Aims and Objectives?

Research aims.

A research aim describes the main goal or the overarching purpose of your research project.

In doing so, it acts as a focal point for your research and provides your readers with clarity as to what your study is all about. Because of this, research aims are almost always located within its own subsection under the introduction section of a research document, regardless of whether it’s a thesis , a dissertation, or a research paper .

A research aim is usually formulated as a broad statement of the main goal of the research and can range in length from a single sentence to a short paragraph. Although the exact format may vary according to preference, they should all describe why your research is needed (i.e. the context), what it sets out to accomplish (the actual aim) and, briefly, how it intends to accomplish it (overview of your objectives).

To give an example, we have extracted the following research aim from a real PhD thesis:

Example of a Research Aim

The role of diametrical cup deformation as a factor to unsatisfactory implant performance has not been widely reported. The aim of this thesis was to gain an understanding of the diametrical deformation behaviour of acetabular cups and shells following impaction into the reamed acetabulum. The influence of a range of factors on deformation was investigated to ascertain if cup and shell deformation may be high enough to potentially contribute to early failure and high wear rates in metal-on-metal implants.

Research Objectives

Where a research aim specifies what your study will answer, research objectives specify how your study will answer it.

They divide your research aim into several smaller parts, each of which represents a key section of your research project. As a result, almost all research objectives take the form of a numbered list, with each item usually receiving its own chapter in a dissertation or thesis.

Following the example of the research aim shared above, here are it’s real research objectives as an example:

Example of a Research Objective

  • Develop finite element models using explicit dynamics to mimic mallet blows during cup/shell insertion, initially using simplified experimentally validated foam models to represent the acetabulum.
  • Investigate the number, velocity and position of impacts needed to insert a cup.
  • Determine the relationship between the size of interference between the cup and cavity and deformation for different cup types.
  • Investigate the influence of non-uniform cup support and varying the orientation of the component in the cavity on deformation.
  • Examine the influence of errors during reaming of the acetabulum which introduce ovality to the cavity.
  • Determine the relationship between changes in the geometry of the component and deformation for different cup designs.
  • Develop three dimensional pelvis models with non-uniform bone material properties from a range of patients with varying bone quality.
  • Use the key parameters that influence deformation, as identified in the foam models to determine the range of deformations that may occur clinically using the anatomic models and if these deformations are clinically significant.

It’s worth noting that researchers sometimes use research questions instead of research objectives, or in other cases both. From a high-level perspective, research questions and research objectives make the same statements, but just in different formats.

Taking the first three research objectives as an example, they can be restructured into research questions as follows:

  • What is the number, velocity and position of impacts needed to insert a cup?
  • What is the relationship between the size of interference between the cup and cavity and deformation for different cup types?

Difference Between Aims and Objectives

Hopefully the above explanations make clear the differences between aims and objectives, but to clarify:

  • The research aim focus on what the research project is intended to achieve; research objectives focus on how the aim will be achieved.
  • Research aims are relatively broad; research objectives are specific.
  • Research aims focus on a project’s long-term outcomes; research objectives focus on its immediate, short-term outcomes.
  • A research aim can be written in a single sentence or short paragraph; research objectives should be written as a numbered list.

How to Write Aims and Objectives

Before we discuss how to write a clear set of research aims and objectives, we should make it clear that there is no single way they must be written. Each researcher will approach their aims and objectives slightly differently, and often your supervisor will influence the formulation of yours on the basis of their own preferences.

Regardless, there are some basic principles that you should observe for good practice; these principles are described below.

Your aim should be made up of three parts that answer the below questions:

  • Why is this research required?
  • What is this research about?
  • How are you going to do it?

The easiest way to achieve this would be to address each question in its own sentence, although it does not matter whether you combine them or write multiple sentences for each, the key is to address each one.

The first question, why , provides context to your research project, the second question, what , describes the aim of your research, and the last question, how , acts as an introduction to your objectives which will immediately follow.

Explaining aims vs objectives

Note: Your research aims need not be limited to one. Some individuals per to define one broad ‘overarching aim’ of a project and then adopt two or three specific research aims for their thesis or dissertation. Remember, however, that in order for your assessors to consider your research project complete, you will need to prove you have fulfilled all of the aims you set out to achieve. Therefore, while having more than one research aim is not necessarily disadvantageous, consider whether a single overarching one will do.

Research Objectives

Each of your research objectives should be SMART :

  • Specific – is there any ambiguity in the action you are going to undertake, or is it focused and well-defined?
  • Measurable – how will you measure progress and determine when you have achieved the action?
  • Achievable – do you have the support, resources and facilities required to carry out the action?
  • Relevant – is the action essential to the achievement of your research aim?
  • Timebound – can you realistically complete the action in the available time alongside your other research tasks?

In addition to being SMART, your research objectives should start with a verb that helps communicate your intent. Common research verbs include:

Last, format your objectives into a numbered list. This is because when you write your thesis or dissertation, you will at times need to make reference to a specific research objective; structuring your research objectives in a numbered list will provide a clear way of doing this.

Research Objective:

Checking Against Recommended Approach:

Q: Is it specific? A: Yes, it is clear what the student intends to do (produce a finite element model), why they intend to do it (mimic cup/shell blows) and their parameters have been well-defined ( using simplified experimentally validated foam models to represent the acetabulum ).

Q: Is it measurable? A: Yes, it is clear that the research objective will be achieved once the finite element model is complete.

Q: Is it achievable? A: Yes, provided the student has access to a computer lab, modelling software and laboratory data.

Q: Is it relevant? A: Yes, mimicking impacts to a cup/shell is fundamental to the overall aim of understanding how they deform when impacted upon.

Q: Is it timebound? A: Yes, it is possible to create a limited-scope finite element model in a relatively short time, especially if you already have experience in modelling.

Q: Does it start with a verb? A: Yes, it starts with ‘develop’, which makes the intent of the objective immediately clear.

Q: Is it a numbered list? A: Yes, it is the first research objective in a list of eight.

Mistakes in Writing Research Aims and Objectives

1. making your research aim too broad.

Having a research aim too broad becomes very difficult to achieve. Normally, this occurs when a student develops their research aim before they have a good understanding of what they want to research. Remember that at the end of your project and during your viva defence , you will have to prove that you have achieved your research aims; if they are too broad, this will be an almost impossible task. In the early stages of your research project, your priority should be to narrow your study to a specific area. A good way to do this is to take the time to study existing literature, question their current approaches, findings and limitations, and consider whether there are any recurring gaps that could be investigated .

Note: Achieving a set of aims does not necessarily mean proving or disproving a theory or hypothesis, even if your research aim was to, but having done enough work to provide a useful and original insight into the principles that underlie your research aim.

2. Making Your Research Objectives Too Ambitious

Be realistic about what you can achieve in the time you have available. It is natural to want to set ambitious research objectives that require sophisticated data collection and analysis, but only completing this with six months before the end of your PhD registration period is not a worthwhile trade-off.

3. Formulating Repetitive Research Objectives

Each research objective should have its own purpose and distinct measurable outcome. To this effect, a common mistake is to form research objectives which have large amounts of overlap. This makes it difficult to determine when an objective is truly complete, and also presents challenges in estimating the duration of objectives when creating your project timeline. It also makes it difficult to structure your thesis into unique chapters, making it more challenging for you to write and for your audience to read.

Fortunately, this oversight can be easily avoided by using SMART objectives.

Hopefully, you now have a good idea of how to create an effective set of aims and objectives for your research project, whether it be a thesis, dissertation or research paper. While it may be tempting to dive directly into your research, spending time on getting your aims and objectives right will give your research clear direction. This won’t only reduce the likelihood of problems arising later down the line, but will also lead to a more thorough and coherent research project.

Formulating research aim and objectives in an appropriate manner is one of the most important aspects of your thesis. This is because research aim and objectives determine the scope, depth and the overall direction of the research. Research question is the central question of the study that has to be answered on the basis of research findings.

Research aim emphasizes what needs to be achieved within the scope of the research, by the end of the research process. Achievement of research aim provides answer to the research question.

Research objectives divide research aim into several parts and address each part separately. Research aim specifies WHAT needs to be studied and research objectives comprise a number of steps that address HOW research aim will be achieved.

As a rule of dumb, there would be one research aim and several research objectives. Achievement of each research objective will lead to the achievement of the research aim.

Consider the following as an example:

Research title: Effects of organizational culture on business profitability: a case study of Virgin Atlantic

Research aim: To assess the effects of Virgin Atlantic organizational culture on business profitability

Following research objectives would facilitate the achievement of this aim:

  • Analyzing the nature of organizational culture at Virgin Atlantic by September 1, 2022
  • Identifying factors impacting Virgin Atlantic organizational culture by September 16, 2022
  • Analyzing impacts of Virgin Atlantic organizational culture on employee performances by September 30, 2022
  • Providing recommendations to Virgin Atlantic strategic level management in terms of increasing the level of effectiveness of organizational culture by October 5, 2022

Common mistakes in the formulation of research aim relate to the following:

1. Choosing the topic too broadly . This is the most common mistake. For example, a research title of “an analysis of leadership practices” can be classified as too broad because the title fails to answer the following questions:

a) Which aspects of leadership practices? Leadership has many aspects such as employee motivation, ethical behaviour, strategic planning, change management etc. An attempt to cover all of these aspects of organizational leadership within a single research will result in an unfocused and poor work.

b) An analysis of leadership practices in which country? Leadership practices tend to be different in various countries due to cross-cultural differences, legislations and a range of other region-specific factors. Therefore, a study of leadership practices needs to be country-specific.

c) Analysis of leadership practices in which company or industry? Similar to the point above, analysis of leadership practices needs to take into account industry-specific and/or company-specific differences, and there is no way to conduct a leadership research that relates to all industries and organizations in an equal manner.

Accordingly, as an example “a study into the impacts of ethical behaviour of a leader on the level of employee motivation in US healthcare sector” would be a more appropriate title than simply “An analysis of leadership practices”.

2. Setting an unrealistic aim . Formulation of a research aim that involves in-depth interviews with Apple strategic level management by an undergraduate level student can be specified as a bit over-ambitious. This is because securing an interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook or members of Apple Board of Directors might not be easy. This is an extreme example of course, but you got the idea. Instead, you may aim to interview the manager of your local Apple store and adopt a more feasible strategy to get your dissertation completed.

3. Choosing research methods incompatible with the timeframe available . Conducting interviews with 20 sample group members and collecting primary data through 2 focus groups when only three months left until submission of your dissertation can be very difficult, if not impossible. Accordingly, timeframe available need to be taken into account when formulating research aims and objectives and selecting research methods.

Moreover, research objectives need to be formulated according to SMART principle,

 where the abbreviation stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.

Among the many sections that constitute a research paper, the introduction plays a key role in providing a background and setting the context. 1 Research objectives, which define the aims of the study, are usually stated in the introduction. Every study has a research question that the authors are trying to answer, and the objective is an active statement about how the study will answer this research question. These objectives help guide the development and design of the study and steer the research in the appropriate direction; if this is not clearly defined, a project can fail!

Research studies have a research question, research hypothesis, and one or more research objectives. A research question is what a study aims to answer, and a research hypothesis is a predictive statement about the relationship between two or more variables, which the study sets out to prove or disprove. Objectives are specific, measurable goals that the study aims to achieve. The difference between these three is illustrated by the following example:

  • Research question : How does low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) compare with a placebo device in managing the symptoms of skeletally mature patients with patellar tendinopathy?

Research objectives can be broadly classified into general and specific objectives . 4 General objectives state what the research expects to achieve overall while specific objectives break this down into smaller, logically connected parts, each of which addresses various parts of the research problem. General objectives are the main goals of the study and are usually fewer in number while specific objectives are more in number because they address several aspects of the research problem.

Example (general objective): To investigate the factors influencing the financial performance of firms listed in the New York Stock Exchange market.

Example (specific objective): To assess the influence of firm size on the financial performance of firms listed in the New York Stock Exchange market.

In addition to this broad classification, research objectives can be grouped into several categories depending on the research problem, as given in Table 1.

  • Achievable—attainable using the available time and resources

How to write research objectives?

Research objectives can be written using the following steps: 7

  • State your main research question clearly and concisely.
  • Describe the ultimate goal of your study, which is similar to the research question but states the intended outcomes more definitively.
  • Divide this main goal into subcategories to develop your objectives.
  • Limit the number of objectives (1-2 general; 3-4 specific)
  • Assess each objective using the SMART
  • Start each objective with an action verb like assess, compare, determine, evaluate, etc., which makes the research appear more actionable.
  • Use specific language without making the sentence data heavy.
  • The most common section to add the objectives is the introduction and after the problem statement.
  • Add the objectives to the abstract (if there is one).
  • State the general objective first, followed by the specific objectives.

Formulating research objectives

Formulating research objectives has the following five steps, which could help researchers develop a clear objective: 8

  • Identify the research problem.
  • Review past studies on subjects similar to your problem statement, that is, studies that use similar methods, variables, etc.
  • Identify the research gaps the current study should cover based on your literature review. These gaps could be theoretical, methodological, or conceptual.
  • Define the research question(s) based on the gaps identified.
  • Revise/relate the research problem based on the defined research question and the gaps identified. This is to confirm that there is an actual need for a study on the subject based on the gaps in literature.
  • Identify and write the general and specific objectives.
  • Incorporate the objectives into the study.

The importance of research aims and objectives cannot be over-stressed. It is vital to have a very clear understanding of what the research is about and what you are actually trying to achieve. You need to know this. And you need to be able to communicate it to others.

Carrying out a research project is rather like going on a journey. It is a linear process during which, in theory at least, you move from your starting point to your objective and then tell others the story of your journey. In practice it can become much more complex.

Once begun, there are few opportunities to retrace your steps if you get lost or side-tracked. The project develops a momentum of its own and it is often difficult to slow things down or to alter course. There are also lots of fascinating by-ways and side routes that might be interesting to explore. This is made worse by the fact that as the research – or the journey – progresses, the level of complexity increases and it is easy to find yourself in the middle of a metaphorical forest with many paths leading in different directions and no clear indication of which is the best one to take.

Assuming that you manage to find your way through all this, you still need to retain a clear idea about where you are going so that you know when you have reached your destination.

A clear, unambiguous research aim coupled with a precise statement of research objectives will provide you with an initial sense of direction. It will enable you to design the research project, selecting the most appropriate methods. It will also provide the basis for managing the research once the project is underway. It will also be an invaluable guide when it comes to analysing the results and making sense of it all.

A clear idea of what you are going to do is also an essential part of obtaining support from others, whether they be stakeholders, potential funders or subjects of the research.

How long does it take the person reading your thesis to understand what you’re doing and how you’re doing it? If the answer is anything other than ’in the opening paragraphs of the thesis’ then keep reading.

If you tell them as early as possible what you’re doing and how you’re doing it – and do so in clear and simple terms – whatever you write after will make much more sense. If you leave them guessing for ten pages, everything they read in those ten pages has no coherence. You’ll know where it is all leading, but they won’t.

Your research aims are the answer to the question,   ‘What are you doing?’ 

1. You need to clearly describe what your intentions are and what you hope to achieve. These are your aims.

2. Your aims may be to test theory in a new empirical setting, derive new theory entirely, construct a new data-set, replicate an existing study, question existing orthodoxy, and so on. Whatever they are, clearly articulate them and do so early. Definitely include them in your introduction and, if you’re smart, you’ll  write them in your abstract .

3. Be very  explicit . In the opening paragraphs, say, in simple terms, ‘ the aim of this thesis is to …’

4. Think of your aims then as a statement of intent. They are  a promise to the reader  that you are going to do something. You use the next two hundred pages or so to follow through on that promise. If you don’t make the promise, the reader won’t understand your follow-through. Simple as that.

Because they serve as the starting point of the study, there needs to be a flow from your aims through your objectives (more on this below) to your research questions and contribution and then into the study itself. If you have completed your research and found that you answered a different question (not that uncommon), make sure your original aims are still valid. If they aren’t, refine them.

If you struggle to explain in simple terms what your research is about and why it matters, you may need to refine your aims and objectives to make them more concise.

When writing up your aims, there are a number of things to bear in mind.

1. Avoid listing too many. Your PhD isn’t as long as you think it is and you won’t have time or room for more than around two or three.

2. When you write them up, be very specific. Don’t leave things so vague that the reader is left unsure or unclear on what you aim to achieve.

3. Make sure there is a logical flow between each of your aims. They should make sense together and should each be separate components which, when added together, are bigger than the sum of their parts.

Research objectives

Your aims answer the question, ‘What are you doing?’ The   objectives are the answer to the question, ‘How are you doing it?’ 

Research objectives refer to the goals or steps that you will take to achieve your aims.

When you write them,   make sure they are SMART. 

  • S pecific: talk in a precise and clear way about what you are going to do.
  • M easurable: how will you know when you have achieved your aim?
  • A chievable: make sure that you aren’t overly ambitious.
  • R ealistic: recognise the time and resource constraints that come with doing a PhD and don’t attempt to do too much.
  • T ime constrained: determine when each objective needs to be completed.

You need to be as explicit as possible here.  Leave the reader in no doubt about what you will do to achieve your aims.  Step by step. Leave no ambiguity. At the same time, be careful not to repeat your methods chapter here. Just hint at your methods by presenting the headlines. You’ll have plenty of space in your methods discussion to flesh out the detail. 

Elsewhere in the thesis you will necessarily have to talk in a complex language and juggle complex ideas. Here you don’t. You can write in clear, plain sentences.

What is the difference between research aims and objectives?

The aims of a study describe what you hope to achieve. The objectives detail how you are going to achieve your aims.

Let’s use an example to illustrate.

  • To understand the contribution that local governments make to national level energy policy.

Objectives:

  • Conduct a survey of local politicians to solicit responses.
  • Conduct desk-research of local government websites to create a database of local energy policy.
  • Interview national level politicians to understand the impact these local policies have had.
  • Data will be coded using a code book derived from dominant theories of governance.

Leave the reader in no doubt about what you will do to achieve your aims.  Step by step. Leave no ambiguity.

I can’t articulate them clearly, my research is complicated!

Of course your research is complex. That’s the name of the game. But   the sign of someone being able to   master   complexity is their ability to   summarise   it . Sure, you’re not looking to capture all the richness and detail in a short summary of aims and objectives, but you are looking to tell the reader what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.

If you’re struggling to clearly articulate your aims and objectives, then try the following task. At the top of a Post-it note write the sentence: ‘In this research I will…’. Then keep trying until you can fit an answer onto one single Post-it note. The answer should answer two questions: what are are you doing and how are you doing it?

Remember – whenever you write, make it as clear as possible. Pay attention to the words ‘as possible’ there. That means you should write as clearly as you can given the fact that your subject and research is necessarily complex. Think of it the other way: it’s about not making things more complicated and unclear than they need to be.

In other words, make your reader’s job as easy as you can. They’ll thank you for it.

Without knowing lots about your topics/subject I’m not able to provide tailored advice, but broadly speaking your scope is the aims/objectives, your main argument is the thread running through the thesis (i.e. what your thesis is trying to argue) and the contribution (again, broadly speaking) is that gap you are filling.

DUMB QUESTION ALERT: Is there supposed to be a difference between aims and research question?

I mean, using your own example.. if the aim of my research is: “To understand the contribution that local governments make to national level energy policy” then wouldn’t the research question be: “How do local governments contribute to energy policy at national level”?

I am sorry if this comes out as completely obvious but I am at that stage of confusion where I am starting to question everything I know.

Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply! It’s not a dumb question at all. The aim of the study is what the study as a whole is seeking to achieve. So that might be the gap it is filling/the contribution it is making. The research questions are your means to achieving that aim. Your aim might be to fill a gap in knowledge, and you then may have a small number of questions that help you along that path. Does that make sense?

What Is Research Methodology? A Plain-Language Explanation & Definition (With Examples)

If you’re new to formal academic research, it’s quite likely that you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by all the technical lingo that gets thrown around. And who could blame you – “research methodology”, “research methods”, “sampling strategies”… it all seems never-ending!

In this post, we’ll demystify the landscape with plain-language explanations and loads of examples (including easy-to-follow videos), so that you can approach your dissertation, thesis or research project with confidence. Let’s get started.

What is research methodology?

Research methodology simply refers to the practical “how” of a research study. More specifically, it’s about how  a researcher  systematically designs a study  to ensure valid and reliable results that address the research aims, objectives and research questions . Specifically, how the researcher went about deciding:

  • What type of data to collect (e.g., qualitative or quantitative data )
  • Who  to collect it from (i.e., the sampling strategy )
  • How to  collect  it (i.e., the data collection method )
  • How to  analyse  it (i.e., the data analysis methods )

Within any formal piece of academic research (be it a dissertation, thesis or journal article), you’ll find a research methodology chapter or section which covers the aspects mentioned above. Importantly, a good methodology chapter explains not just   what methodological choices were made, but also explains  why they were made. In other words, the methodology chapter should justify  the design choices, by showing that the chosen methods and techniques are the best fit for the research aims, objectives and research questions. 

So, it’s the same as research design?

Not quite. As we mentioned, research methodology refers to the collection of practical decisions regarding what data you’ll collect, from who, how you’ll collect it and how you’ll analyse it. Research design, on the other hand, is more about the overall strategy you’ll adopt in your study. For example, whether you’ll use an experimental design in which you manipulate one variable while controlling others. You can learn more about research design and the various design types here .

What are qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods?

Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods are different types of methodological approaches, distinguished by their focus on words , numbers or both . This is a bit of an oversimplification, but its a good starting point for understanding.

Let’s take a closer look.

Qualitative research refers to research which focuses on collecting and analysing words (written or spoken) and textual or visual data, whereas quantitative research focuses on measurement and testing using numerical data . Qualitative analysis can also focus on other “softer” data points, such as body language or visual elements.

It’s quite common for a qualitative methodology to be used when the research aims and research questions are exploratory  in nature. For example, a qualitative methodology might be used to understand peoples’ perceptions about an event that took place, or a political candidate running for president. 

Contrasted to this, a quantitative methodology is typically used when the research aims and research questions are confirmatory  in nature. For example, a quantitative methodology might be used to measure the relationship between two variables (e.g. personality type and likelihood to commit a crime) or to test a set of hypotheses .

As you’ve probably guessed, the mixed-method methodology attempts to combine the best of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to integrate perspectives and create a rich picture. What is sampling strategy?

Simply put, sampling is about deciding who (or where) you’re going to collect your data from . Why does this matter? Well, generally it’s not possible to collect data from every single person in your group of interest (this is called the “population”), so you’ll need to engage a smaller portion of that group that’s accessible and manageable (this is called the “sample”).

How you go about selecting the sample (i.e., your sampling strategy) will have a major impact on your study.  There are many different sampling methods  you can choose from, but the two overarching categories are probability   sampling and  non-probability   sampling .

Probability sampling  involves using a completely random sample from the group of people you’re interested in. This is comparable to throwing the names all potential participants into a hat, shaking it up, and picking out the “winners”. By using a completely random sample, you’ll minimise the risk of selection bias and the results of your study will be more generalisable  to the entire population. 

Non-probability sampling , on the other hand,  doesn’t use a random sample . For example, it might involve using a convenience sample, which means you’d only interview or survey people that you have access to (perhaps your friends, family or work colleagues), rather than a truly random sample. With non-probability sampling, the results are typically not generalisable .

What are data collection methods?

As the name suggests, data collection methods simply refers to the way in which you go about collecting the data for your study. Some of the most common data collection methods include:

  • Interviews (which can be unstructured, semi-structured or structured)
  • Focus groups and group interviews
  • Surveys (online or physical surveys)
  • Observations (watching and recording activities)
  • Biophysical measurements (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, etc.)
  • Documents and records (e.g., financial reports, court records, etc.)

The choice of which data collection method to use depends on your overall research aims and research questions , as well as practicalities and resource constraints. For example, if your research is exploratory in nature, qualitative methods such as interviews and focus groups would likely be a good fit. Conversely, if your research aims to measure specific variables or test hypotheses, large-scale surveys that produce large volumes of numerical data would likely be a better fit.

What are data analysis methods?

Data analysis methods refer to the methods and techniques that you’ll use to make sense of your data. These can be grouped according to whether the research is qualitative  (words-based) or quantitative (numbers-based).

Popular data analysis methods in qualitative research include:

  • Qualitative content analysis
  • Thematic analysis
  • Discourse analysis
  • Narrative analysis
  • Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA)
  • Visual analysis (of photographs, videos, art, etc.)

Qualitative data analysis all begins with data coding , after which an analysis method is applied. In some cases, more than one analysis method is used, depending on the research aims and research questions . In the video below, we explore some  common qualitative analysis methods, along with practical examples.  

Moving on to the quantitative side of things, popular data analysis methods in this type of research include:

  • Descriptive statistics (e.g. means, medians, modes )
  • Inferential statistics (e.g. correlation, regression, structural equation modelling)

Again, the choice of which data collection method to use depends on your overall research aims and objectives , as well as practicalities and resource constraints. In the video below, we explain some core concepts central to quantitative analysis.

How do I choose a research methodology?

As you’ve probably picked up by now, your research aims and objectives have a major influence on the research methodology . So, the starting point for developing your research methodology is to take a step back and look at the big picture of your research, before you make methodology decisions. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether your research is exploratory or confirmatory in nature.

If your research aims and objectives are primarily exploratory in nature, your research will likely be qualitative and therefore you might consider qualitative data collection methods (e.g. interviews) and analysis methods (e.g. qualitative content analysis). 

Conversely, if your research aims and objective are looking to measure or test something (i.e. they’re confirmatory), then your research will quite likely be quantitative in nature, and you might consider quantitative data collection methods (e.g. surveys) and analyses (e.g. statistical analysis).

Designing your research and working out your methodology is a large topic, which we cover extensively on the blog . For now, however, the key takeaway is that you should always start with your research aims, objectives and research questions (the golden thread). Every methodological choice you make needs align with those three components.

Research objectives refer to the definitive statements made by researchers at the beginning of a research project detailing exactly what a research project aims to achieve.

These objectives are explicit goals clearly and concisely projected by the researcher to present a clear intention or course of action for his or her qualitative or quantitative study. 

Research objectives are typically nested under one overarching research aim. The objectives are the steps you’ll need to take in order to achieve the aim (see the examples below, for example, which demonstrate an aim followed by 3 objectives, which is what I recommend to my research students).

Research Objectives vs Research Aims

Research aim and research objectives are fundamental constituents of any study, fitting together like two pieces of the same puzzle.

The ‘research aim’ describes the overarching goal or purpose of the study (Kumar, 2019). This is usually a broad, high-level purpose statement, summing up the central question that the research intends to answer.

Example of an Overarching Research Aim:

“The aim of this study is to explore the impact of climate change on crop productivity.” 

Comparatively, ‘research objectives’ are concrete goals that underpin the research aim, providing stepwise actions to achieve the aim.

Objectives break the primary aim into manageable, focused pieces, and are usually characterized as being more specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).

Examples of Specific Research Objectives:

1. “To examine the effects of rising temperatures on the yield of rice crops during the upcoming growth season.” 2. “To assess changes in rainfall patterns in major agricultural regions over the first decade of the twenty-first century (2000-2010).” 3. “To analyze the impact of changing weather patterns on crop diseases within the same timeframe.”

The distinction between these two terms, though subtle, is significant for successfully conducting a study. The research aim provides the study with direction, while the research objectives set the path to achieving this aim, thereby ensuring the study’s efficiency and effectiveness.

How to Write Research Objectives

I usually recommend to my students that they use the SMART framework to create their research objectives.

SMART is an acronym standing for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It provides a clear method of defining solid research objectives and helps students know where to start in writing their objectives (Locke & Latham, 2013).

Each element of this acronym adds a distinct dimension to the framework, aiding in the creation of comprehensive, well-delineated objectives.

Here is each step:

  • Specific : We need to avoid ambiguity in our objectives. They need to be clear and precise (Doran, 1981). For instance, rather than stating the objective as “to study the effects of social media,” a more focused detail would be “to examine the effects of social media use (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) on the academic performance of college students.”
  • Measurable: The measurable attribute provides a clear criterion to determine if the objective has been met (Locke & Latham, 2013). A quantifiable element, such as a percentage or a number, adds a measurable quality. For example, “to increase response rate to the annual customer survey by 10%,” makes it easier to ascertain achievement.
  • Achievable: The achievable aspect encourages researchers to craft realistic objectives, resembling a self-check mechanism to ensure the objectives align with the scope and resources at disposal (Doran, 1981). For example, “to interview 25 participants selected randomly from a population of 100” is an attainable objective as long as the researcher has access to these participants.
  • Relevance : Relevance, the fourth element, compels the researcher to tailor the objectives in alignment with overarching goals of the study (Locke & Latham, 2013). This is extremely important – each objective must help you meet your overall one-sentence ‘aim’ in your study.
  • Time-Bound: Lastly, the time-bound element fosters a sense of urgency and prioritization, preventing procrastination and enhancing productivity (Doran, 1981). “To analyze the effect of laptop use in lectures on student engagement over the course of two semesters this year” expresses a clear deadline, thus serving as a motivator for timely completion.

You’re not expected to fit every single element of the SMART framework in one objective, but across your objectives, try to touch on each of the five components.

Research Objectives Examples

1. Field: Psychology

Aim: To explore the impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance in college students.

  • Objective 1: To compare cognitive test scores of students with less than six hours of sleep and those with 8 or more hours of sleep.
  • Objective 2: To investigate the relationship between class grades and reported sleep duration.
  • Objective 3: To survey student perceptions and experiences on how sleep deprivation affects their cognitive capabilities.

2. Field: Environmental Science

Aim: To understand the effects of urban green spaces on human well-being in a metropolitan city.

  • Objective 1: To assess the physical and mental health benefits of regular exposure to urban green spaces.
  • Objective 2: To evaluate the social impacts of urban green spaces on community interactions.
  • Objective 3: To examine patterns of use for different types of urban green spaces. 

3. Field: Technology

Aim: To investigate the influence of using social media on productivity in the workplace.

  • Objective 1: To measure the amount of time spent on social media during work hours.
  • Objective 2: To evaluate the perceived impact of social media use on task completion and work efficiency.

The Importance of Research Objectives

The importance of research objectives cannot be overstated. In essence, these guideposts articulate what the researcher aims to discover, understand, or examine (Kothari, 2014).

When drafting research objectives, it’s essential to make them simple and comprehensible, specific to the point of being quantifiable where possible, achievable in a practical sense, relevant to the chosen research question, and time-constrained to ensure efficient progress (Kumar, 2019). 

Remember that a good research objective is integral to the success of your project, offering a clear path forward for setting out a research design , and serving as the bedrock of your study plan. Each objective must distinctly address a different dimension of your research question or problem (Kothari, 2014). Always bear in mind that the ultimate purpose of your research objectives is to succinctly encapsulate your aims in the clearest way possible, facilitating a coherent, comprehensive and rational approach to your planned study, and furnishing a scientific roadmap for your journey into the depths of knowledge and research (Kumar, 2019).

An Easy-to-Understand Clinical Research Glossary to Support Participants and Professionals

Research assistants, clinical research coordinators, and other clinical research professionals are often the study team members with whom participants (and potential participants) interact the most when joining or learning about a research study, throughout their participation, and whenever they have questions. During the recruitment and consent process, as well as during the study, participants should be supported with clear explanations of what specific clinical research terms mean.  

To that end, The Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center ( MRCT Center ) of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard has introduced the Clinical Research Glossary (CRG) , which offers plain language definitions along with additional contextual information that research professionals can use to empower participants and their families.  

The availability of these definitions for all sites and sponsors to use allows for a harmonized approach across the research ecosystem, increasing the likelihood of consistency in terminology across the study life cycle itself, and even between studies. This supports participants and the research enterprise, countering research misinformation and increasing researcher trustworthiness.  

Some key facts about the MRCT Center’s Clinical Research Glossary:

  • The CRG is freely available and aims to provide clear definitions in plain language and helpful extra content (e.g., graphics and additional information for potential participants to consider when joining a study), so each concept is easier for every person to understand.  
  • The CRG definitions have been included by the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium  (CDISC) in its global clinical research standards, so more and more research leaders are turning to these definitions.  
  • Every definition was co-created by the MRCT Center and a workgroup made up of volunteers with expertise across the clinical research ecosystem. We prioritize the patient voice and research advocates, while also drawing on the experience of medical writers, librarians, other nonprofit professionals, and sponsor representatives. Some of these definitions were even reviewed by fifth graders to ensure clarity of information.  
  • Most terms found in the CRG have a bespoke image designed by the MRCT Center team, produced by graphic designers, and reviewed by the team of volunteers. The extra information goes through a similar process of multiple reviews before it is published on the website.  
  • The MRCT Center will update the CRG over time, adding new words and refreshing old content as needed.  

This tool can be implemented in various ways:

  • Use the CRG for onboarding to familiarize new staff with key clinical research terminology.  
  • Print the CRG as a PDF for use during recruitment, consent, and study visits.  
  • Incorporate CRG information into educational materials to aid participants in following study instructions and facilitate conversations.  
  • Download the CRG as an Excel file to integrate with other site lexicons.  
  • Provide the CRG to participants as an educational resource, either via link or on a study-specific website.  

As long as the Creative Commons license is followed, anyone can reuse the content and graphics.

Building bridges: evaluating policymakers' research capacities, engagement, and utilization in health policymaking within the Kuwaiti context: a cross-sectional study

Health policymaking is a critical aspect of governmental decision-making that shapes the well-being of populations. In the Middle East and North Africa, particularly in Kuwait, limited attention has been given to exploring the research capacities, engagement, and utilization among health policymakers. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating how Kuwaiti health policymakers incorporate evidence-based research into the formulation of health-related policies.

This cross-sectional study targeted health policymakers in leadership positions within the Kuwait Ministry of Health (MOH). Using the Seeking, Engaging with and Evaluating Research (SEER) questionnaire, participants' capacities, engagement, and use of research were assessed. The targeted sample was all health policymakers in leadership positions, starting from the head of departments and above. The questionnaire comprises four domains, 14 sections, and 50 questions and utilizes Likert and binary scales, with aggregate scores predicting engagement actions and research use. The data were collected between March and July 2023. All the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS v27, and the numerical and categorical variables were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests, including t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation.

Out of 205 policymakers, 88 participated (42.9% response rate): predominantly male (51.1%) and married (78.4%). The mean age was 49.84 ± 7.28 years, with a mean MOH tenure of 24.39 ± 6.80 years. Participants demonstrated high value for research (mean score 4.29 ± 0.55) and expressed confidence in the research utilization. Organizational emphasis on research use exhibited nuanced perceptions, identifying areas where MOH support may be lacking. Access to research resources and processes for policy development guidance were highlighted as challenges.

Conclusions

This study provides crucial insights into the research capacities and engagement of Kuwaiti health policymakers. It emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to align individual perceptions with organizational expectations, address confidence disparities, and enhance collaborative efforts. Organizational investments are crucial for fostering a dynamic research ecosystem to improve evidence-based policy development in Kuwait's healthcare landscape.

Decision-makers at the national and governmental levels influence our lives through the policies they implement. A crucial aspect of these policies is the formulation and implementation of health policies, which are vital for developing health systems that more effectively address the health needs of their populations [ 1 ]. It is widely recognized that research can significantly contribute to the development of health policies. Utilizing robust evidence to guide public health policy is likely to achieve greater and more equitable health benefits for the population [ 2 ].

Even though evidence-based research is an important driver of decision-making, community characteristics, needs, and preferences should also be considered [ 3 ]. Therefore, other data sources, such as needs assessments, population characteristics, community resources and values, ideas and interests, and professional and practical experience, have proven to be essential in the decision-making process, all in a broader environmental and organizational context [ 4 , 5 ]. One of these policymaking approaches that uses research and other data sources is called evidence-informed policymaking (EIP), and the global dedication to using it has grown significantly in the past twenty years. This approach is believed to maximize equitable health outcomes for the population, enhance the cost-effectiveness of health services and policies, and improve transparency and accountability in decision-making processes [ 6 ]. By using EIP, policymakers can use research evidence to design interventions that best fit their communities.

Several factors must be considered to ensure the effective use of research in health policymaking. Health policy and systems research focuses on understanding and improving how societies are organized to achieve collective health objectives. Key characteristics include its diverse participants, practical nature, engagement with structural changes, commitment to social justice principles, and multidisciplinary perspective. Therefore, developing the health policy and systems research field emphasizes enhancing connections among individuals and organizations, ensuring collaboration across different communities of practice, and consolidating and expanding shared ideas and experiences [ 1 ].

Moreover, for research findings to be effectively transformed into meaningful policies, they must be relevant, timely, accessible, and clear. Without these factors, even robust research evidence will not lead to well-informed policies [ 7 , 8 ]. Policymakers must have confidence in research and the capacity to understand and apply it, as well as appreciate its value [ 4 ]. This highlights the importance of policymakers' qualities and capacities in evidence-informed policymaking. Numerous studies have shown that these personal qualities and research capacities are crucial for the effective use of research evidence in public health policymaking [ 3 , 4 ].

Other factors that also play a role are related to the organizational culture within the decision-making organization and whether it harbors a positive research culture and a supportive environment that enables and supports research to generate new knowledge and translate research into practice [ 9 , 10 ]. Therefore, if one wishes to determine the extent to which research is implemented successfully in the decision-making process, then a good start would be to study the research capacity of the decision-makers and the support they get from their organization to translate research into policies. In their research on policymakers, Newman et al. (2012) and Brennan et al. (2017) defined policymakers’ capacity as a widely used term conceived of a multilevel concept (individual, organizational, enabling environment) encompassing four elements: tools, skills, staff, and infrastructure (and roles in it), increasingly used to build competencies to implement evidence-based practice [ 11 , 12 ]. As previously defined, research capacity is still not a widely explored concept in the literature, and it is still challenging to measure it with no concrete agreement on its definition [ 4 ].

A 2018 review of the Kuwait Health System concluded that strategic policymaking decisions in Kuwait are not evidence-based and may be somewhat politically motivated. In addition, health policy decisions are developed without sufficient consultation with stakeholders and their execution is not well planned. Although electronic healthcare records exist within primary healthcare centers, it is unclear how the MOH uses collected data to develop evidence-based policies. This lack of evidence-based policymaking in the healthcare sector has hampered the country’s ability to adapt to new challenges caused by rising rates of non-communicable diseases, falling revenues and technological changes [ 13 ]. Consequently, the system has not been able to adapt to the population's changing needs. In addition to the latter, key governmental decision-makers (and/or their advisers) do not always have experience in health policy, health management, health economics and/or public health and may have limited research capacities, which is a limitation when developing appropriate policies [ 13 ]. Clearly, there is an area of improvement in the use of research within policymaking in Kuwait. However, the first step in improving this approach is to assess the use of evidence-based research among Kuwaiti health policymakers. This will constitute a baseline upon which any future action should be built.

Particularly in the Middle East, there is little research on health policymakers’ research capacities, making this paper a vital milestone in studying how health policies are shaped in the region. This paper aims to explore how Kuwaiti health policymakers make use of evidence-based research when they are developing health-related policies. We aim to examine their capacities, engagement, and research use in health policymaking.

Study design, settings, and targeted population

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the research capacity, engagement, and use of research among health policymakers in Kuwait. The targeted sample was all 205 health policymakers in leadership positions, starting from the head of departments and above, which include (e.g., minister, undersecretary, assistant undersecretary, directors of central directorates, heads of departments and supervisors in central directorates, heads of clinical specialty councils), and directors of different catchment areas, Kuwait Institute of Medical Specializations, and the Legal Responsibility Authority. To avoid selection bias, we targeted all health policymakers. The exclusion criterion was working in a nonclinical area (financial or administrative sectors) or a researcher working within a university or other research organization during the data collection. The existing organizational structure of the Kuwait Ministry of Health was used to identify the eligible participants who were contacted and received a copy of the questionnaire (a link to the electronic version or hardcopy according to their preference) with two-weeks reminders. The data were collected between the end of Mars and the end of July 2023.

Measurement

Data was collected using the SEER questionnaire [ 12 ]. The questionnaire assesses individual policymakers’ (1) capacity to use research/evidence (predisposing factors), (2) research/evidence engagement actions and (3) actual research use (instrumental, conceptual, tactical, imposed) [ 12 ]. The questionnaire was validated and used in Australia [ 12 ] and Denmark [ 4 ]. The SEER questionnaire was developed as a part of the Supporting Policy In health with Research: an Intervention Trial (SPIRIT) Action Framework [ 12 ], which was created to guide informed decisions in selecting and testing interventions aimed at increasing research use in policy [ 14 ]. SEER is one of three tools in the SPIRIT Action Framework [ 14 ].

The tool consists of four domains, 14 sections, and 50 questions. The first domain assesses the capacity of policymakers to use research and consists of 4 sections; the scoring of the first two sections is a five-point scale ranging from (not at all valuable—score = 1) to (very valuable—score = 5), the third section is a five-point scale ranging from (never—score = 1) to (always—score = 5). The last section is a four-point scale scored as (no—score = 1), (yes, but limited—score = 2), (yes well developed—score = 3), or (I don’t know—recorded as ‘no’). The second domain examines research engagement actions and has five sections; four sections have binary scales, and the last section is a four-point scale ranging from (not at all—score = 1) to (more than twice—score = 4). The third domain examines the extent of research use and has one section scored on a six-point scale ranging from (none—score = 1) to (extensive—score = 6). The final domain assesses the type of research used and has four sections with binary scales [ 12 ]. In addition, the survey included a section consisting of eight questions to collect basic sociodemographic data. The SEER instrument was minimally adapted for the Kuwaiti context; one change was made to the section of (accessed synthesized research) in the third question (commission a review of research to summarize and evaluate the results of available studies?) the word (commission) was replaced by (headed or delegated). In addition, an example was added from Kuwait to the question under the section (interacted with researchers) in the third question (collaborated on a competitive research grant application).

Data analysis

Statistical analysis was done using SPSS v27 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). Numerical data are presented as mean with standard deviation (SD) and were analyzed using independent samples t-test or one-way ANOVA as appropriate after confirmation of the normality of distribution using the Shapiro–Wilk test. Categorical variables were presented as frequency and percentage (%). Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the associations between age, duration of working in MOH, and different variables. There were no missing data. We chose to report the mean score as there is much variation in the total score of each domain, and a p -value of < 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance.

Out of 205 policymakers, 88 participants were included in this study (response rate 42.9%), of whom almost half were males, 45 (51.1%), and 69 (78.4%) were married. Forty participants (45.5%) received their highest education from Kuwait, and 38 (43.2%) received their highest education from Western and other countries. The mean duration of working in MOH was 24.39 ± 6.80 years. The participants' demographics are available in the additional file.

Regarding the value individuals place on using research, the mean score was 4.29 ± 0.55. Almost None of the participants categorized any statements as not valuable at all, and a few as not valuable. The statement "Meet organizational requirements to use research" was labelled neutral by many participants compared to other statements; however, the statement was considered valuable by the highest number of participants. Approximately half of the participants considered the statement "Monitor implementation or evaluate the impact of a policy or program" very valuable (Additional file). In relation to the confidence the participants had in their knowledge and skills, the mean score was 3.78 ± 0.70. The highest statement that received "not confident" or "neutral" labels was the "Evaluate the quality of research" statement. On the other hand, the participants were confident in "Apply research to policy or program development", "Commission research to support policy or program development", and "Partner with researchers to generate research". More than a quarter of the participants were very confident in "Find research to inform policy or program development"; details are available in the additional file.

In terms of the value the MOH places on using research, the mean score was 3.30 ± 0.88. Eight percent of the participants labelled the statement "Interaction or collaboration with researchers or research organizations is encouraged" "never", and more than a quarter of the sample thought that "Generation of new research to inform policy or program development is encouraged" was rarely applied to the MOH. Approximately one-third of the sample recognized that sometimes "Leaders believe it is important to use research in policy or program development" and "It is expected that policies/programs will be evaluated". In addition, (30.7%) thought that in the MOH, often, "It is expected that research will be used in policy or program development", and (17%) recognized that leaders always believe it is important to use research in policy or program development (Additional file).

Regarding the tools and systems organization that support research engagement actions and use, the mean score was 1.67 ± 0.54. More than 50% of the sample thought there was no access to the needed research resources. In addition, 50 participants recognized that there are limited “Processes for policy or program development that provide guidance on how research should be used”. Only 13 participants thought that there are well-developed “Processes for policy or program development that provide guidance on how research should be used”, “Access to training in using research in policy or program development”, and “Relationships, or established methods for engaging, with research organizations” (Additional file).

Concerning access to synthesized research, 62 (70.5%) participants searched for "Reviews of research summarizing and evaluating the results of multiple studies", and 53 (60.2%) "Headed or delegated a team to summarize and evaluate the results of available studies". The respondents' answers to questions related to access to primary research showed that 58 (65.9%) participants searched for research papers reporting the results of single studies and that 47 (53.4%) searched for research on government websites. Regarding research appraisal experience, 56 (63.6%), 58 (65.9%), and 60 (68.2%) mentioned that they participated in appraisal in "The appropriateness of methods used to answer the question", "The likelihood that the methods used meant that the results were reliable (unbiased)", and "Generalizability of the findings to your context, based on similarity of the included population, health system or other factors", respectively (Additional file).

Regarding the participants' research generation, 61 (69.3%) had undertaken or participated in an internally conducted research project or analysis of data, 59 (67%) commissioned or partnered with researchers to conduct a research project or analysis of data, and 58 (65.9%) planned or undertaken an evaluation of the program or policy. As of the interaction with other researchers, the mean score was 2.07 ± 0.92, in which 61 participants (69.3%) never collaborated on a competitive research grant application. Additionally, approximately 24% of the participants contributed to the analysis and/or writing up of research results or to other aspects of a research publication only once, 15 (17%) collaborated with researchers to develop or implement a research project twice, and 31 (35.2%) attended forums to hear about research findings more than twice (Additional file).

Regarding the extent of use of the research, the mean score was calculated and was 2.54 ± 1.29. Sixteen participants (18.2%) thought it was minimally used in policy or program development, 17 (19.3%) recognized it limited usage in policy or program evaluation, and 29 (33%) mentioned that it was used to a moderate extent in agenda setting/scoping (Additional file). Regarding the type of research used by the respondents, the most common type was conceptual research (56; 63.6%), and the least common type was imposed research by the organization (Additional file).

There was no statistically significant association between participants' demographics and the mean value individuals placed on using research or the participants' confidence in their knowledge and skills. There was no correlation between age or duration of working in MOH, the mean value individuals place on using research, or their confidence in their knowledge and skills (Additional file). However, there was a statistically significant association between gender and the mean value that organization places on using research, as the mean value that organization places on using research for males (3.10 ± 0.91) was lower than the mean value that organization places on using research for females (3.50 ± 0.80), P  = 0.034. In addition, there was a positive moderate correlation between age and the mean value of organization places on research (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.297, P value = 0.005). Additionally, a positive moderate correlation was observed between the duration of working in MOH and the mean value the organization places on using research (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.353, P value = 0.001) (Additional file).

There was no statistically significant association between participants' demographics or mean interaction with researchers' mean extent of research use. Similarly, no correlation existed between age or duration of working in MOH, mean interaction with researchers, or extent of research use (Additional file).

To our knowledge, this is the first study in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that aimed to explore health policymakers’ capacities, engagement, and use of research in health policymaking. In the MENA region, limited attention has been given to investigating the research capabilities of health policymakers. This paper represents a significant step forward in examining the factors that influence the shaping of health policies in the region. The present study focuses on understanding how Kuwaiti health policymakers incorporate evidence-based research into the formulation of health-related policies.

The analysis of participants' perspectives on the value placed on using research yielded insightful findings related to research utilization within the Kuwait MOH. A mean score of 4.29 ± 0.55 indicated a generally high level of importance attributed to research by the participants. This finding was similar to that of a previous study [ 4 ]. Participants showed a universal recognition of the significance of research in their professional context. This collective acknowledgement underscores the foundation of a research-informed approach within the MOH. A key observation is the nuanced perception of the statement "Meet organizational requirements to use research." While labelled neutral by many participants, it was still recognized by the highest number as valuable. This finding suggests a potential misalignment between individual perceptions and organizational expectations, urging further exploration of the underlying factors influencing this discrepancy.

Consistent with the findings of another study [ 4 ], the present study participants expressed confidence in their own knowledge and skills for research utilization. However, the finding that "Evaluate the quality of research" received the highest "not confident" and "neutral" labels raised important considerations for capacity-building initiatives. On the positive side, confidence was expressed in applying research to policy or program development and commissioning research, indicating specific areas of strength that can be leveraged for further skill development. These insights are in line with findings by Mirzoev et al., who highlight the necessity of a multifaceted approach to capacity strengthening, involving, training, mentorship, and organizational support mechanisms [ 1 ].

The study also shed light on the organizational context of the value the MOH places on research. The identification of specific areas where the organizational emphasis may be lacking, such as collaboration with researchers and the encouragement of new research generation, provides valuable insights for strategic interventions to enhance the research culture within the MOH. Loncarevic et al. also reported that approximately two-thirds of respondents in their study had not been involved in any research activity, either alone or in collaboration with researchers while being part of the policymaking process [ 4 ]. This aligns with findings by Makkar et al., who suggest that organizational capacity, including leadership support, dedicated resources, and a culture of learning, significantly impacts the extent to which research is used in policymaking [ 15 ].

A notable challenge highlighted by the participants is the perceived limited processes for policy or program development guidance on how research should be used. This finding stresses the importance of addressing infrastructural barriers to research engagement and utilization within the MOH. The low number of participants recognizing well-developed processes and adequate training opportunities underlines the need for organizational investments in these critical areas. Participants' strategies in accessing and utilizing research demonstrate a nuanced decision-making process. A majority actively sought synthesized research, preferring reviews that evaluate multiple studies and showing an appreciation for comprehensive insights. Concurrently, a significant portion engaged in collaborative efforts, leading or delegating teams to evaluate studies collectively. This approach reflects a thoughtful and comprehensive method, combining in-depth study examination with the exploration of authoritative sources.

A significant association was identified between gender and the organization’s perception of research use. Notably, compared with females, organizations place less value on research utilization among males. The lower emphasis on research utilization in males than in females may stem from various factors, such as organizational culture, leadership styles, or gender-specific roles within the organization. These findings warrant further exploration to understand the underlying causes and implications of gender-inclusive strategies promoting research utilization. Additionally, positive moderate correlations emerged between age, duration of working at the MOH, and the organization’s emphasis on research use. This suggests that as individuals grow older or accumulate more experience within the Ministry of Health, there is a tendency for a greater perception that the organization places a greater value on research utilization. This correlation may indicate a maturation process in recognizing the importance of research in decision-making over one’s career.

Engagement in research appraisal activities shows robust competency in critically evaluating research quality. The diversity of research-generation activities displayed adaptability and recognition of the need for tailored research endeavours. The identified gaps in collaborative grant applications and limited participation in research result analysis or publication activities highlight opportunities for fostering a more vibrant research community within the MOH. The mean score and varied collaborative involvement frequencies indicate diverse engagement styles. Nuanced perceptions about research use in decision-making contexts underscore a thoughtful consideration of research impact. The prevalence of conceptual research over organization-imposed research reflects similar findings from a previous study [ 4 ]. Conceptual research often provides a theoretical foundation and conceptual framework for understanding complex issues. Health policies often require a clear understanding of concepts and their interrelationships. Therefore, conceptual research helps clarify these concepts, which can be crucial for policymakers in making informed decisions.

Furthermore, strategies to effectively bring research evidence into policy are crucial, as synthesized by Erismann et al. Their study highlights practical strategies such as engaging stakeholders throughout the research process, building strong networks, and ensuring clear communication of research findings [ 16 ]. Mazzucca et al. also identified a significant relationship between state health department practitioners' perceptions of organizational support and their evidence-based decision-making skills, reinforcing the need for strong organizational support [ 3 ]. These strategies are essential for the MOH in Kuwait to enhance the integration of research into policymaking. By fostering stakeholder engagement and improving communication channels, the MOH can ensure that research findings are effectively translated into policy actions. Overall, these findings emphasize the importance of creating a supportive environment within the MOH to enhance research utilization. By addressing the identified gaps in collaboration, training, and infrastructure, the MOH can foster a culture that values and integrates research into the policy development process. This approach aligns with Williamson et al.'s emphasis on structured capacity-building interventions, which can increase the capacity of policy agencies to use research findings effectively [ 17 ]. Enhancing organizational support and investing in capacity-building initiatives are crucial steps towards promoting EIP in Kuwait and the broader MENA region.

Implications for practice

The study's implications for healthcare practice in Kuwait are multifaceted, offering strategic insights for cultivating an evidence-informed culture within the MOH. Given the participants' high research valuation, initiatives must be undertaken to align individual perceptions with organizational expectations, particularly in meeting research requirements. Targeted capacity-building programs addressing confidence disparities, specifically in appraising research quality, are crucial for enhancing professionals' skills and promoting effective evidence evaluation.

In light of the identified organizational gaps, fostering collaboration with researchers and encouraging new research generation are imperative. Creating platforms for interaction and incentivizing internal research initiatives can nurture a more dynamic research ecosystem within the MOH. Addressing challenges related to limited access to training in using research and systems that encourage leaders to support the use of research necessitates organizational investments in infrastructure and technology, enhancing professionals' ability to access and utilize diverse research sources.

Ultimately, these strategic interventions have the potential to elevate evidence-based decision-making within the Kuwait healthcare context, contributing to improved policy and program development. By clarifying expectations, enhancing skills, fostering collaboration, and addressing infrastructure gaps, the MOH can advance its mission of delivering healthcare services grounded in the latest and most relevant related research.

Strength and limitations

This study has several strengths. First, this study represents the initial comprehensive evaluation of individual research engagement and utilization capacity in Kuwait and the Middle East at large. Second, this study pioneered the application of the validated SEER measure. This approach aids in identifying areas of vulnerability in the health policy process concerning research utilization. Such insights can inform targeted strategies for capacity building. Third, the survey included health policymakers from diverse organizational levels with varied public health responsibilities, enhancing the generalizability of the findings. The results delineated the aspects of individual capacity that either facilitated or impeded research utilization, indicating areas for improvement.

Nevertheless, the study had its limitations. Survey nonresponse is a perpetual concern, particularly when nonrespondents differ from participants in some discernible or indiscernible manner. The lack of information on response rates and differences between participants and nonparticipants makes it inappropriate to extrapolate from the sample to the broader population. The likelihood that those with greater interest and motivation participated may have led to overestimating the value Kuwaiti policymakers assign to research in policymaking and their perceived ability to integrate research systematically. Although the study targeted all health policymakers, the possibility of the existence of selection bias must be acknowledged.

In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing research utilization within the MOH, encompassing individual perspectives, organizational priorities, and engagement with research activities. The identified areas of strength and challenges pave the way for targeted interventions aimed at optimizing the integration of research into policy and program development within the MOH.

A research design is a strategy for answering your   research question  using empirical data. Creating a research design means making decisions about:

  • Your overall research objectives and approach
  • Whether you’ll rely on primary research or secondary research
  • Your sampling methods or criteria for selecting subjects
  • Your data collection methods
  • The procedures you’ll follow to collect data
  • Your data analysis methods

A well-planned research design helps ensure that your methods match your research objectives and that you use the right kind of analysis for your data.

  • Introduction

Before you can start designing your research, you should already have a clear idea of the research question you want to investigate.

There are many different ways you could go about answering this question. Your research design choices should be driven by your aims and priorities—start by thinking carefully about what you want to achieve.

The first choice you need to make is whether you’ll take a qualitative or quantitative approach.

Qualitative research designs tend to be more flexible and inductive , allowing you to adjust your approach based on what you find throughout the research process.

Quantitative research designs tend to be more fixed and deductive , with variables and hypotheses clearly defined in advance of data collection.

It’s also possible to use a mixed-methods design that integrates aspects of both approaches. By combining qualitative and quantitative insights, you can gain a more complete picture of the problem you’re studying and strengthen the credibility of your conclusions.

Practical and ethical considerations when designing research

As well as scientific considerations, you need to think practically when designing your research. If your research involves people or animals, you also need to consider research ethics .

  • How much time do you have to collect data and write up the research?
  • Will you be able to gain access to the data you need (e.g., by travelling to a specific location or contacting specific people)?
  • Do you have the necessary research skills (e.g., statistical analysis or interview techniques)?
  • Will you need ethical approval ?

At each stage of the research design process, make sure that your choices are practically feasible.

Within both qualitative and quantitative approaches, there are several types of research design to choose from. Each type provides a framework for the overall shape of your research.

Types of quantitative research designs

Quantitative designs can be split into four main types.

  • Experimental and   quasi-experimental designs allow you to test cause-and-effect relationships
  • Descriptive and correlational designs allow you to measure variables and describe relationships between them.

With descriptive and correlational designs, you can get a clear picture of characteristics, trends and relationships as they exist in the real world. However, you can’t draw conclusions about cause and effect (because correlation doesn’t imply causation ).

Experiments are the strongest way to test cause-and-effect relationships without the risk of other variables influencing the results. However, their controlled conditions may not always reflect how things work in the real world. They’re often also more difficult and expensive to implement.

Types of qualitative research designs

Qualitative designs are less strictly defined. This approach is about gaining a rich, detailed understanding of a specific context or phenomenon, and you can often be more creative and flexible in designing your research.

The table below shows some common types of qualitative design. They often have similar approaches in terms of data collection, but focus on different aspects when analyzing the data.

Your research design should clearly define who or what your research will focus on, and how you’ll go about choosing your participants or subjects.

In research, a population is the entire group that you want to draw conclusions about, while a sample is the smaller group of individuals you’ll actually collect data from.

Defining the population

A population can be made up of anything you want to study—plants, animals, organizations, texts, countries, etc. In the social sciences, it most often refers to a group of people.

For example, will you focus on people from a specific demographic, region or background? Are you interested in people with a certain job or medical condition, or users of a particular product?

The more precisely you define your population, the easier it will be to gather a representative sample.

  • Sampling methods

Even with a narrowly defined population, it’s rarely possible to collect data from every individual. Instead, you’ll collect data from a sample.

To select a sample, there are two main approaches: probability sampling and non-probability sampling . The sampling method you use affects how confidently you can generalize your results to the population as a whole.

Probability sampling Non-probability sampling

Probability sampling is the most statistically valid option, but it’s often difficult to achieve unless you’re dealing with a very small and accessible population.

For practical reasons, many studies use non-probability sampling, but it’s important to be aware of the limitations and carefully consider potential biases. You should always make an effort to gather a sample that’s as representative as possible of the population.

Case selection in qualitative research

In some types of qualitative designs, sampling may not be relevant.

For example, in an ethnography or a case study , your aim is to deeply understand a specific context, not to generalize to a population. Instead of sampling, you may simply aim to collect as much data as possible about the context you are studying.

In these types of design, you still have to carefully consider your choice of case or community. You should have a clear rationale for why this particular case is suitable for answering your research question .

For example, you might choose a case study that reveals an unusual or neglected aspect of your research problem, or you might choose several very similar or very different cases in order to compare them.

Data collection methods are ways of directly measuring variables and gathering information. They allow you to gain first-hand knowledge and original insights into your research problem.

You can choose just one data collection method, or use several methods in the same study.

Survey methods

Surveys allow you to collect data about opinions, behaviors, experiences, and characteristics by asking people directly. There are two main survey methods to choose from: questionnaires and interviews .

Observational studies allow you to collect data unobtrusively, observing characteristics, behaviors or social interactions without relying on self-reporting.

Observations may be conducted in real time, taking notes as you observe, or you might make audiovisual recordings for later analysis. They can be qualitative or quantitative.

There are many other ways you might collect data depending on your field and topic.

Media & communication Collecting a sample of texts (e.g., speeches, articles, or social media posts) for data on cultural norms and narratives
Psychology Using technologies like neuroimaging, eye-tracking, or computer-based tasks to collect data on things like attention, emotional response, or reaction time

Physical sciences Using scientific instruments to collect data on things like weight, blood pressure, or chemical composition

If you’re not sure which methods will work best for your research design, try reading some papers in your field to see what kinds of data collection methods they used.

Secondary data

If you don’t have the time or resources to collect data from the population you’re interested in, you can also choose to use secondary data that other researchers already collected—for example, datasets from government surveys or previous studies on your topic.

With this raw data, you can do your own analysis to answer new research questions that weren’t addressed by the original study.

Using secondary data can expand the scope of your research, as you may be able to access much larger and more varied samples than you could collect yourself.

However, it also means you don’t have any control over which variables to measure or how to measure them, so the conclusions you can draw may be limited.

As well as deciding on your methods, you need to plan exactly how you’ll use these methods to collect data that’s consistent, accurate, and unbiased.

Planning systematic procedures is especially important in quantitative research, where you need to precisely define your variables and ensure your measurements are high in reliability and validity.

Operationalization

Some variables, like height or age, are easily measured. But often you’ll be dealing with more abstract concepts, like satisfaction, anxiety, or competence. Operationalization means turning these fuzzy ideas into measurable indicators.

If you’re using observations , which events or actions will you count?

If you’re using surveys , which questions will you ask and what range of responses will be offered?

You may also choose to use or adapt existing materials designed to measure the concept you’re interested in—for example, questionnaires or inventories whose reliability and validity has already been established.

Reliability and validity

Reliability means your results can be consistently reproduced, while validity means that you’re actually measuring the concept you’re interested in.

For valid and reliable results, your measurement materials should be thoroughly researched and carefully designed. Plan your procedures to make sure you carry out the same steps in the same way for each participant.

If you’re developing a new questionnaire or other instrument to measure a specific concept, running a pilot study allows you to check its validity and reliability in advance.

Sampling procedures

As well as choosing an appropriate sampling method , you need a concrete plan for how you’ll actually contact and recruit your selected sample.

That means making decisions about things like:

  • How many participants do you need for an adequate sample size?
  • What inclusion and exclusion criteria will you use to identify eligible participants?
  • How will you contact your sample—by mail, online, by phone, or in person?

If you’re using a probability sampling method , it’s important that everyone who is randomly selected actually participates in the study. How will you ensure a high response rate?

If you’re using a non-probability method , how will you avoid research bias and ensure a representative sample?

Data management

It’s also important to create a data management plan for organizing and storing your data.

Will you need to transcribe interviews or perform data entry for observations? You should anonymize and safeguard any sensitive data, and make sure it’s backed up regularly.

Keeping your data well-organized will save time when it comes to analyzing it. It can also help other researchers validate and add to your findings (high replicability ).

On its own, raw data can’t answer your research question. The last step of designing your research is planning how you’ll analyze the data.

Quantitative data analysis

In quantitative research, you’ll most likely use some form of statistical analysis . With statistics, you can summarize your sample data, make estimates, and test hypotheses.

Using descriptive statistics , you can summarize your sample data in terms of:

  • The distribution of the data (e.g., the frequency of each score on a test)
  • The central tendency of the data (e.g., the mean to describe the average score)
  • The variability of the data (e.g., the standard deviation to describe how spread out the scores are)

A well-planned research design helps ensure that your methods match your research aims, that you collect high-quality data, and that you use the right kind of analysis to answer your questions, utilizing credible sources . This allows you to draw valid , trustworthy conclusions.

Quantitative research designs can be divided into two main categories:

  • Correlational and descriptive designs are used to investigate characteristics, averages, trends, and associations between variables.

Qualitative research designs tend to be more flexible. Common types of qualitative design include case study , ethnography , and grounded theory designs.

The priorities of a research design can vary depending on the field, but you usually have to specify:

When you invest in stocks , you're purchasing a share of a company. They're basically a slice of ownership in a company that can yield returns if it's successful. There are various ways to invest and leverage your money. But there's a lot to know before you get started investing in stocks. 

Investing for Beginners

Step 1: Figure out your goals 

It's important to know what your fundamental goals are and why you want to start investing in the first place. Knowing this will help you to set clear goals to work toward. This is a crucial first step to take when you're looking to create an investing strategy later on. 

If you're unsure of your goals, first review your financial situation, such as how much debt you have, your after-tax income, and your expected retirement goal date. Knowing when you plan to retire can let you know your overall time horizon — or how much time you plan to hold onto your investments to reach your financial goal. 

Based on that information, you can start figuring out your investing goals. Do you want to invest for the short or long term? Are you saving for a down payment on a house? Or are you trying to build your nest egg for retirement? All of these situations will affect how much — and how aggressively — to invest.

Finally, investing, like life, is inherently risky And you can lose money as easily as you can earn it. For your financial and mental well-being, you want to consider your appetite for risk. This is typically referred to as "risk tolerance" or how much risk you can reasonably take on given your financial situation and feelings about risk. 

Step 2: Determine your budget 

Once you've got some solid goals set, it's time to review your budget. Here are some things to consider:

  • Your current after-tax income. Many people look at their pre-tax income, but you want to know how much money you're working with after taxes which can help you create a realistic budget. 
  • Your expenses. How much are your monthly expenses? How much do you have left over each month? Is it possible to reduce or cut some expenses? 
  • Overall debt. How much debt do you have? List out your monthly payments and compare that against what you're making.
  • Net worth. Your net worth is your total assets minus your liabilities. This number can give you an idea of where you're at financially and will allow you to get a "big-picture" snapshot of your financial health. 
  • Financial goals. As we mentioned before, knowing your goals is important as it gives your money a purpose. 
  • Risk tolerance. How much risk do you feel comfortable taking on? Calculating this will give you a clearer idea of what you can afford to lose.
  • Time horizon . How much time do you have before you want to reach your investing goals? This is key to mapping out your finances to ensure you're keeping pace with when and how to invest without disrupting your budget or other goals not related to trading securities.

All of these are key ingredients that can help you determine your budget. 

One last thing to consider: when you expect to retire. For example, if you have 30 years to save for retirement, you can use a retirement calculator to assess how much you might need and how much you should save each month. When setting a budget, make sure you can afford it and that it is helping you reach your goals. 

Step 3: Get acquainted with various stocks and funds 

Now it's time to start doing research on what to invest in. There are different ways to invest in the stock market and there's a lot to know so doing your research is well worth your time. As a regular person who is investing (not a professional trader, accredited trader, or institution), you're what's called a "retail investor." 

Stocks are a good option to consider if you want to invest in specific companies. Just keep in mind that you should look into the company itself and how it's performing over time:

  • Stocks — A stock is a security that gives stockholders the opportunity to buy a fractional share of ownership in a particular company. There are many different types of stocks to choose from, such as blue-chip stocks, growth stocks, and penny stocks , so make sure you understand your options, what they offer, and what matches with your budget and investing goals.

"If you're going to pick a stock, look at the [company's] financial statements and select the stock based on the "bucket" you're trying to fill in your portfolio. For example, are you looking for a dividend stock? Look at the dividend history. Are you looking for a growth stock? Look at the earnings per share : Is it showing consistent growth? [Consider] how these indicators measure against [its] peer group," says Amy Irvine, a CFP® professional at Rooted Planning Group. 

So you want to take steps to look at your income and expense balance sheets and make sure you're hitting the right bucket — which refers to the grouping of related assets or categories — for your investing needs. For example, investing in small-cap, mid-cap, or large-cap stocks, are a way to invest in different-sized companies with varying market capitalizations and degrees of risk. 

If you're looking to go the DIY route or want the option to have your securities professionally managed, you can consider ETFs, mutual funds, or index funds:

  • Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) — ETFs are a type of exchange-traded investment product that must register with the SEC and allows investors to pool money and invest in stocks, bonds, or assets that are traded on the US stock exchange . There are two types of ETFs: Index-based ETFs and actively managed ETFs. Index-based ETFs track a particular securities index like the S&P 500 and invest in those securities contained within that index. Actively managed ETFs aren't based on an index and instead aim to achieve an investment objective by investing in a portfolio of securities that will meet that goal and are managed by an advisor. 
  • Mutual funds — this investment vehicle also allows investors to pool their money to invest in various assets, and are similar to some ETFs in that way. However, mutual funds are always actively managed by a fund manager. Most mutual funds fall into one of four main categories: bond funds, money market funds, stock funds, and target-date funds. 
  • Index funds — this type of investment vehicle is a mutual fund that's designed to track a particular index such as the S&P 500. Index funds invest in stocks or bonds of various companies that are listed on a particular index. 

You want to get familiar with the various types of investing vehicles and understand the risks and rewards of each type of security. For example, stocks can be lucrative but also very risky. As we mentioned before, mutual funds are actively managed, whereas index-based ETFs and index funds are passively managed. 

This is important to keep in mind because your costs and responsibilities vary depending on an active versus passive approach. Mutual funds are professionally managed and may have higher fees. With ETFs and index funds, you can purchase them yourself and may have lower fees. Having a diverse portfolio can help you prepare for the risk and not have all of your eggs in one basket. 

"You can choose to invest in individual stocks, a stock mutual fund, or an ETF. ETFs are somewhat similar to mutual funds in that they invest in many stocks, but trade more similarly to an individual stock," explains Kenny Senour, CFP® professional at Millennial Wealth Management. "For example, let's say you open a brokerage account with $1,000. You can use that money to purchase a certain number of shares in ABC Company, the underlying price of which fluctuates while the stock market is open. Or you could choose to invest it in a stock mutual fund, which invests in many different stocks and is priced at the close of each market at the end of the day." 

The main things to consider when defining your investment strategy are your time horizon, your financial goals, risk tolerance, tax bracket, and your time constraints. Based on this information, there are two main approaches to investing.

  • Passive investing — an investing strategy that takes a buy-and-hold approach, passive investing is a way to DIY your investments for maximum efficiency over time. In other words, you can do it yourself instead of working with a professional. A buy-and-hold strategy focuses on buying investments and holding on to them as long as possible. Instead of trying to "time" the market, you focus on "time in the market."
  • Active investing — an active approach to investing that requires buying and selling, based on market conditions. You can do this yourself or have a professional manager managing your investments. Active investing takes the opposite approach, hoping to maximize gains by buying and selling more frequently and at specific times.

Step 5: Choose your investing account 

After choosing your investment strategy, you want to choose an investing account that can help you get started. Decide if you want to do it yourself or get a professional to help out. 

If you want to be a passive investor and DIY, you can look into:

  • Robo-advisors like Betterment or Wealthfront, which uses algorithms to invest for you
  • Open a brokerage account with Vanguard, Fidelity, or similar 

If you want to get started with active investing, you can use:

  • Use Vanguard actively managed funds
  • Use Fidelity actively managed funds 
  • Trade using Public 

When considering active versus passive investing and if you should DIY it or get a professional, you want to consider several factors. Look at total fees, the time commitment involved and any account minimums as well. 

The easiest way for many people to get started with investing is to utilize their employer-sponsored 401(k). Talk to your employer about getting started and see if they'll match part of your contributions. 

The key is to choose an investment account that fits with your budget and investment strategy, open an account, and then submit an initial deposit. Just know that when you submit money, it's in a cash settlement account and not yet actively invested (I made this mistake when I first started investing!) 

Step 6: Manage your portfolio 

Now it's time to start managing your portfolio. So that means buying stocks, ETFs, or index funds with their appropriate codes from your account. That is when your money is actually invested. 

But it doesn't stop there — you also want to continue to add to your portfolio so consider setting up auto-deposits each month. You can also re-invest any earnings or dividends to help build growth over time.  

Diversify your portfolio by investing in different types of investment vehicles and industries. A buy-and-hold approach is typically better for beginner investors. It can be tempting to try out day trading, but that can be very risky. 

Lastly, you'll want to rebalance your portfolio at least once a year. As your portfolio grows and dips, your asset allocation — or how much you've invested in stocks, bonds, and cash — will have shifted. Rebalancing is basically resetting that to the proportion you want. 

"Rebalancing is the practice of periodically selling and buying investments in your underlying portfolio to make sure certain target weights are stable over time. For example, let's say you are an aggressive investor with 90% of your portfolio in stocks and 10% of your portfolio in bonds. Over time, as stocks and bonds perform differently, those weights will drift," explains Senour.  

"Without periodic rebalancing, your portfolio could become 95% stocks and 5% bonds which may not be in line with your intended financial goals for the account. There's no "perfect" time frame for rebalancing as some financial professionals suggest doing so every quarter, but conventional wisdom says at a minimum rebalancing at least once per year can make sense."

Continuing to invest money and rebalance your portfolio periodically will help you keep your investments in good shape. 

Stocks for beginners

Choosing stocks can be overwhelming for beginners — but you don't have to just invest in individual stocks. It can be less risky (and good for diversifying your portfolio) to invest in funds.

You may choose to invest in an index fund, which is a group of assets that tracks an index such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Investing in individual stocks can be useful. However, you should thoroughly research the company before doing so. And as a beginner, you'll probably want to seek advice from an expert like a financial advisor .

Learning how to invest in stocks can be overwhelming, especially if you're just getting started. Figuring out your goals and determining a budget are the first steps to take.

After that, get acquainted with various investment vehicles and choose the right ones for your financial goals and risk tolerance.

The key is to get started and be consistent. The best investment strategy is the one you'll stick with. Just be aware all investing comes with risk and do your research on any related fees. 

What are the main types of investments? 

Investments come in many forms. If you want to start investing, understanding the main types of investments is helpful. 

You may hear the breakdown of investment types as asset classes. Here's a look at some of the most common types of investments.

  • Stocks : A stock is an investment that indicates fractional ownership in a company. When you buy stocks, you have an opportunity to grow your investment if the value of a company's stock increases. Additionally, some stocks pay dividends to their investors. 
  • Bonds : A bond represents a loan to a particular entity with set repayment terms. When you buy a bond, the entity agrees to repay you with interest. Both companies and governments can issue bonds. 
  • Commodities : Commodities are tangible assets, like natural resources, that are publicly traded. Generally, commodities are considered high-risk due to heightened volatility. 
  • Mutual funds : A mutual fund represents a portfolio of investments that uses money from many investors to purchase a selection of securities. Mutual funds are commonly actively managed with the goal of outperforming the market. 
  • ETFs : An exchange-traded fund (ETF) represents a selection of securities. You can invest in index-based ETFs or actively managed ETFs. But many ETFs are index-based that track a particular index, like the S&P 500. 
  • Real estate : Real estate investing is a broad option that covers investments based on physical property. You can buy individual properties to rent out or shares in a real estate investment trust ( REIT ).

How to invest for inflation

Over time, inflation can erode the purchasing power of your dollar, and also chip away at your investment returns. But with some foresight and planning, it's possible to protect your money. The solution is investing for inflation — choosing investments that will give you a return greater than the current rate of inflation — or at least keep up with it.

Several asset classes in particular lend themselves to inflation-oriented investing. 

  • Appreciation-oriented assets: Go for investments that offer growth, or appreciation — not simply income. Company stock is a prime example. 
  • Real assets: Inflation devalues nominal assets, like CDs and traditional bonds, because they're priced based on the fixed interest they pay, which will lose value when inflation is increasing. In contrast, real assets are tangible things with fundamental value. So their worth floats up together with inflation.
  • Variable interest-rate assets: If something pays a fixed rate, you'll lose money in an inflationary environment. Assets with fluctuating interest rates give your money more of a fighting chance, as they'll also rise with inflation.

Growth stocks vs value stocks

Growth stocks are shares of companies that are expected to experience high growth rates in both their revenue and returns to investors. Growth stocks are those that investors believe will have higher-than-average returns in the short term, while value stocks are those that investors feel are overlooked by the market at large. They are more volatile than value stocks, but they also have the potential to generate higher returns.

Value stocks, on the other hand, are shares of companies that trade at a lower price relative to the company's financial performance. They are measured and defined by their financial performance, such as sales, earnings, and select financial ratios. 

Another way of looking at the difference between the two: Growth stocks would be the expensive designer jacket, value stocks would be the jacket at the thrift store. 

The Fed meets eight times per year to discuss the federal funds rate, and investors tend to react to what occurs once the notes of the meeting have been released. During these meetings, the Fed uses economic data like the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the unemployment rate, and more to determine what the Fed Funds rate should be.

The stock market reacts to the changes in the interest rates because it generally signals whether or not the economy is strong. It could also have an impact on a company's cost to doing business, thus changing how investors may value a company. This is because of the impact that interest rates have on the stock market.   

Here are the ways interest rates affect the stock market:

1. When rates rise, stocks tend to fall — when rates fall, stocks rise

"When interest rates are low, companies can assume debt at a low cost, which they may use to add team members or expand into new ventures," says Harrison. "When rates rise, it's harder for companies to borrow and more costly to manage what debt they already have, which impacts their ability to grow," he adds. These higher costs may result in lower revenues, thus negatively impacting the value of the company.

Also keep in mind that as rates fall on savings accounts and certificates of deposit, investors generally seek out higher paying investments like stocks and are generally seen as a catalyst for growth in the market; in a rising rate environment investors tend to shift away from stock to places with less risk and safer returns. 

2. The rates impacts bonds

Most traditional bonds pay a fixed interest rate through maturity. For example, if you own a 10 year bond paying 3% per year, the 3% annual payment will not fluctuate. However, if interest rates are cut during the life of the bond, the value of the bond rises. This is because as new bonds are issued, it is unlikely that they will be as attractive financially. The opposite is true in a rising rate environment. 

3. Investor expectations can cause volatility

In some cases, how investors feel about the prospects of an interest rate hike or cut can cause the market to swing. Due to announcements by the Fed and other economic data, investors may anticipate a threat of rising rates and begin selling causing short term volatility. This was the case at various points in 2018 and 2021. Investors can do the same and expect a drop in interest rates. In either case, the market can react simply to these expectations of a change in rates without the Fed actually making a move.  

Stock trading vs investing

Trading and investing are two different ways of approaching the stock market. With trading, you're hoping to earn quick returns based on short-term fluctuations in the market. Long-term investors, in contrast, tend to build diversified portfolios of assets and stay in them through the ups and downs of the market.

Trading can be a thrilling way to earn quick cash. However, like with gambling, it can also quickly lead to big losses. Investing usually means smaller short-term wins, but also fewer severe losses.

If you're comfortable with the risks, trading with a portion of your money can be enjoyable and could lead to profits. If reducing risk and exposure to volatility are your main goals, you'll want to stick with long-term investing. But if you're saving for a financial goal you hope to reach by a specific time, a slow-and-steady investing approach is usually best.

The first step is choosing a brokerage account. It may be important to you to use a large, widely recognized company like Charles Schwab or Vanguard. Or you might prefer a robo-advisor, like Wealthfront or Betterment. You'll also want to look at which types of assets you can invest in with a brokerage, and how much each of your top options charges in fees.

Once you've chosen your brokerage, you should be able to apply online. Open the account, deposit money into it, then invest that money in stocks or other assets.

Investing as a beginner can be safe if you do your due diligence. Funds, rather than individual stocks, tend to be safer investments. You can also use a robo-advisor or in-person advisor for a fee to help you decide how to invest. It's important to look at the best financial advisors to ensure you're making wise decisions with your investments.
