This initiative was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's vision of eliminating all dirt and impurities that afflicted our nation and its citizens.

The initiative is commonly referred to as Swachh Bharat Mission or Clean India Movement . Cleaning up all Indian cities and towns was the goal of this effort. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an effort to make India cleaner. It was introduced on October 2, 2014, to commemorate the 145th birthday of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and his proponents of cleanliness.

The Department of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Department of Drinking and Sanitation are in charge of the national cleanliness programme. The campaign was envisioned for five years to complete the suggested plans by October 2, 2019, the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's birth.

500 Words Essay On Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), also known as the Clean India Mission or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan , is a countrywide project the Indian government initiated in 2014 to eradicate open defecation and improve solid waste management. It is an enhanced version of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, an effort launched in 2009 by Manmohan Singh's successor that was unsuccessful in achieving its objectives.

The Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0

The Finance Ministry announced in February 2021 that the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 would be implemented under the "Health and Wellbeing" component. The SBM-U phase II will include new sewage treatment, including poor sewage management, in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) with fewer than 1 lakh residents.

The Swachh Bharat Mission's first phase was completed in October 2019. Phase 2 is being completed between 2020–2021 and 2024–2025 to assist in the consolidation of Phase 1's activities. The government allocated Rs 1,41,678 crores to the Swachh Bharat Mission (U) 2.0 in the Union Budget 2021. Here are the components of SBM-Urban 2.0:

Waste Management – Solid

Building capacity, information, education, and communication

All ULBs under 1 lakh occupants now include wastewater treatment, including fecal sludge management.

Environmental sanitation (construction of toilets)

Urban Swachh Bharat Mission 1.0

All 4041 statutory towns with a population of 377 million were required to provide home toilets and sanitary amenities as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), which is administered by the Ministry of Urban Development. A five-year budget of Rs 62,009 crore was anticipated, of which Rs 14,623 crore was to come from the centre. The Mission intended to supply 1.04 crore families with 2.5 lakh local and 2.6 lakh public restroom seats. Additionally, it suggested building solid waste management facilities in each community. Six key elements make up this mission:

Separate toilets for each home;

Public restrooms

Management of Municipal Solid Waste,

Community restrooms

Information and Education Communication (IEC) Awareness

Capacity Building

Swachh Bharat Essay - Why There is a Need For Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

A Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-style campaign to promote cleanliness is desperately needed in India to combat filth and insanitation. Citizens' development depends on the program in terms of their general health and well-being. Typically, there needs to be more restrooms for residents in rural locations. To excrete, residents went outside to the streets or fields. This caused several sanitary issues for people. Therefore, the Clean India Mission can significantly aid in improving these people's quality of life.

Plan For Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation established the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan action plan. By 2019, it had intended to increase the number of sanitary facilities. Making India ODF (Open Defecation Free) is the primary adjustment that needs to be made.

Highlights of the action plan:

By 2019, increase the growth rate of toilets from 3% to 10%.

Schoolchildren are participating in education campaigns about water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Toilet construction has risen from 14,000 to 48,000 every day.

Launch of a National/State-Level Media Campaign to Spread Awareness Using Audio-Visual, Mobile Telephony, and Local Programs.

Main Objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The primary goal with which the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan initiative was started was to eliminate open defecation in India. The motive was also to raise awareness of the issues caused by solid and liquid wastes when waste management is not done properly. The Swachh Bharat Mission sought to clean up the nation's streets, buses, offices, and drainage systems. Making the nation's residents aware of their paramount obligation to maintain cleanliness and stop pollution from spreading throughout the nation is another goal of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an initiative by the Indian government that aims to solve open defecation and waste management issues, as well as the general goal of general cleanliness, as these issues hinder the nation's progress.

The primary objectives of this programme are:

The abolition of open defecation.

The conversion of unhygienic restrooms.

Manual waste collection.

Complete waste disposal.

Waste reuse.

Benefits of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The success of India's economy is inextricably linked to the Clean India movement. The accomplishment of this mission would, among other things, indirectly attract business investors to India, boost GDP growth, attract tourists from all over the world, bring about a variety of employment opportunities, lower health costs, lower death rates, lower lethal disease rates, and much more. Clean India would attract more tourists and improve the country's economic situation.

The campaign had numerous successful outcomes. Swachh Bharat Run, Swachh Bharat apps, Real-time monitoring system, Swachh Bharat short film, and Swachh Bharat Nepal - Swasth Bharat Nepal Abhiyan are just a few of the initiatives that were started and put into action to actively support the mission's goals.

The Finance Ministry of India launched the Swachh Bharat Cess programme, which requires everyone to pay 0.5% tax on all services in India (i.e., 50 paise for every 100 rupees), in order to sustain and make this campaign successful.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay 8 (1400 words – Long Essay)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was started by the Indian government to make Mahatma Gandhi’s dream “Sanitation is more important than Independence” come true. He was well aware of the poor and dirty condition of the country that’s why he made various efforts to complete his dream however could not be successful.

As he dreamt of clean India one day, he said that both cleanliness and sanitation are integral parts of healthy and peaceful living. Unfortunately, India is still lagging behind in cleanliness and sanitation even after 77 years of independence. According to the statistics, it was noted that very less percentage of total population had access to the toilets. It is a programme run by the government to seriously work to fulfil the vision of Father of Nation (Bapu) by calling people from all walks of life to make it a successful campaign globally.

This mission had to be completed by 150th birth anniversary of Bapu (i.e. 2nd October 2019) in next five years (from the launch date). It was urged by the government to the people to spend at least 100 hours in a year towards cleanliness in their surrounding areas or other places of India to make it a successful campaign. There are various implementation policies and mechanisms for the programme including three important phases such as planning phase, implementation phase and sustainability phase.

The Swachh Bharat Mission of urban areas aimed to cover almost 1.04 crore households in order to provide them 2.6 lakhs of public toilets, 2.5 lakhs of community toilets together with the solid wastes management in every town. Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission

Gramin Swachh Bharat Mission is a mission implementing cleanliness programmes in the rural areas. Earlier the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (also called Total Sanitation campaign, TSC) was established by the Government of India in 1999 to make rural areas clean however now it has been restructured into the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

This campaign was aimed to make rural areas free from open defecation till 2019 for which the estimated cost was one lakh thirty four thousand crore rupees for constructing approximately 11 crore 11 lakh toilets in the country. It planned converting waste into bio-fertilizer and useful energy forms. This mission involved the participation of gram panchayat, panchayat samiti and Zila Parishad. Swachh Bharat – Swachh Vidyalaya Campaign

The Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya campaign run by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had aimed for cleanliness in the schools. A major programme was organized under it from 25th of September 2014 to 31st of October 2014 in the Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalya Sangathans.

Lots of cleanliness activities were held such as discussions over various cleanliness aspects in the school assembly by the students, teachings of Mahatma Gandhi related to cleanliness, cleanliness and hygiene topics, cleaning activities (in the class rooms, libraries, laboratories, kitchen sheds stores, playgrounds, gardens, toilets, pantry areas, etc).

The cleaning of statue in the school area, speech over the contribution of great people, essay writing competitions, debates, art, painting, film, shows, role plays related to hygiene including other many activities on cleanliness and hygiene were also conducted. It was also planned to hold a half an hour cleaning campaign in the schools twice a week involving the cleanliness activities by the teachers, students, parents and community members.

Swachh Bharat Cess

Swachh Bharat cess is an improvement in the service tax by 0.5% on all the services in India. It was started by the Finance Ministry to collect some fund from each and every Indian citizen for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in order to make it a huge success. Everyone has to pay extra 50 paise for each 100 rupees spent as service tax for this cleanliness campaign.

Another Cleanliness Initiative in Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath (Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh), in March 2017, has banned chewing of paan, paan masala, gutka and other tobacco products (especially in the duty hours) in the government offices to ensure cleanliness. He started this initiative after his first visit to the secretariat annex building when he saw betel-juice stained walls and corners in that building.

We can say Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, is a nice welcome step to keep India clean and green. As we all heard about the most famous proverb that “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness”, we can surely say that Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) will really bring godliness all over the country in few years if it is followed by the people of India in an effective manner.

So, the cleanliness activities to warm welcome the godliness have been started but it should not need to be ended if we really want godliness in our lives forever.

The campaign’s impact extends beyond physical infrastructure, influencing societal attitudes towards cleanliness. Schools, colleges, and public spaces actively participate, organizing cleanliness drives and spreading awareness about sanitation and hygiene.

However, challenges persist, and continued efforts are essential. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan serves as a catalyst for change, highlighting the interconnectedness of cleanliness, health, and national pride. With sustained commitment from citizens, government, and organizations, the campaign aims to achieve its goals, ensuring a Swachh Bharat for future generations.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched on October 2, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a transformative campaign addressing the sanitation and cleanliness challenges in India. With the overarching goal of achieving a “Clean India,” the initiative recognizes the intrinsic link between sanitation, health, and overall national development.

The campaign operates on a comprehensive strategy that includes constructing toilets, promoting proper waste management, and eradicating the practice of open defecation. Access to sanitation facilities is fundamental to human dignity, health, and the prevention of diseases. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seeks to address this by constructing millions of toilets across the country, especially in rural areas, to eliminate open defecation.

One of the cornerstones of the campaign is community participation. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan recognizes that creating lasting change requires the involvement of every citizen. It encourages people to take ownership of their surroundings, adopt hygienic practices, and actively contribute to maintaining cleanliness. Awareness campaigns play a vital role in changing societal attitudes towards cleanliness and hygiene.

The impact of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan extends beyond the physical infrastructure of toilets; it strives to foster a cultural shift towards cleanliness, transforming it into a way of life.

While significant progress has been made, challenges remain. Changing deep-rooted behaviors and cultural norms takes time. The campaign faces issues such as sustaining the use of constructed toilets, ensuring proper waste segregation, and overcoming infrastructural gaps in some regions. Ongoing efforts focus on addressing these challenges through continued community engagement, innovative solutions, and targeted interventions.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is not merely a government initiative; it is a collective endeavor that requires sustained commitment from citizens, local authorities, and non-governmental organizations. India, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, faces the uncomfortable truth that many people still struggle with life on the poverty line. Despite high growth rates of GDP, millions of people in India still live with inadequate sanitation and health care facilities. This paradox of India clearly outlines the deprivation of certain strata of the population leading to many social movements. A social movement is a sustained collective action over time for shared objectives and ideologies of a group to bring about changes in the existing social system. The health, sanitation and the welfare of masses are closely interlinked. It has been recognized that health is a key determinant of economic growth and better health leads to higher income which in turn leads to better health. Thus, health is a double-edged sword, if not addressed properly can work as a boomerang against the growth. For India, it becomes indispensable to tackle the issues of health and cleanliness which are fundamental components of human capital and the keys to reaping the demographic dividend. Taking the holistic view of social accountability of the government towards the deprived social classes, the Indian government has offered various policy prescriptions towards cleanliness in terms of various schemes. This book, therefore, intends to encompass such schemes with a special focus on ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, the most significant cleanliness campaign by the Government of India. Various collective Social Movements in this regard were launched including that of Mahatma Gandhi, which triggered the effective public action and highlighted the role of participatory democracy in India. The objective of this book is to create a platform for the academician, researcher and practitioner to discuss and understand different emerging issues and challenges of cleanliness campaigns to spread awareness about hygiene and explore the possibilities for necessary policy initiative for sustainable growth and development. It has been declared by the Government of India that this campaign is taken as “beyond politics” and “inspired by patriotism”. It is the right time to discuss about clean India and with the assistance of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi, a two day national conference on Clean India for New India has been conducted in the Alagappa University, Department of Women’s Studies, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. The selected papers presented in the conference are being edited as a book volume. The edited papers related to the concept, issues, and strategies of a vision on Clean India in the book are very useful to the policy-makers and stakeholders of the Clean India activities.

Long and Short Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Speech in English for Students

From 2014 to 2019, the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) was a national fight to dispose of open faeces and develop urban and nationwide areas of strong waste management (SWM) in India. The important factors of this mission are covered in the below-given speeches on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The objectives of the mission included the destruction of manual searching, the creation of awareness and the achievement of a change of actions about sanitation practices, and the increase of sanitation facilities across the country.

Long and Short Speech on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for Students and Children

Good morning to all of you present here. Today, I am going to speak on the topic, ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Movement was launched on Gandhi Jayanti (145th birthday celebration of Mahatma Gandhi), on 2nd of October, in 2014 by India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The Indian government administered this campaign, launched by our Prime Minister, all across the country.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan's cleanliness campaign was run at a national scale and encompassed all cities, districts, at both rural and urban levels. It has acted as a wonderful campaign to make people aware of the value of cleanliness. In Rajghat, New Delhi, the drive for Swachh Bharat was officially launched and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleaned the streets himself at the launch of this mission. It is the biggest cleanliness drive of India ever, with about 30 lakh government employees, school and college students participating in the activities.

Nine famous personalities from India were initially nominated by the Indian Prime Minister, for beginning this campaign in their respective states or areas and taking the campaign further. He asked all nine of those personalities to call on nine other individuals (such as a tree branch) to continue this series until each Indian joined the mission, as it was planned for the next 5 years.

The purpose of the mission is to assess certain important factors for the proper sanitation arrangements in the rural and urban parts of the country. These factors include the availability of individual sanitary toilets in low-cost sanitary lavatories, hand pumps, proper bathing, hygiene, drains, soak pits, solid and liquid waste disposal. Population growth is an important factor that has to be considered for making proper sanitation arrangements. This mission also aims to promote health and hygiene literacy, environmental and personal hygiene. The Government of India initiated sanitation programs under the name 'Total Sanitation Campaign' (TSC) for this mission, earlier on 1 April 1999, but it was not as successful even after taking effect. To eradicate pollution, India is in desperate need of a cleanliness campaign like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It is important in terms of health and well-being for the overall development of people.

Since the majority of India's population lives in rural areas, it is a big issue to spread awareness about cleanliness. Generally, people don't have adequate toilet facilities in these regions. They go out to excrete on fields or highways. For residents, this activity causes a lot of hygiene issues. This Clean India Mission may, therefore, be of great help to improve the living conditions of these individuals. As rural areas are the main focus of this mission, the quality of life of rural people will be improved by it. Most notably, it promotes public health through its goals. India is one of the world's most populated and polluted nations, and this mission will change the scenario. What's more, Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of ideal India will be fulfilled that day when we achieve the objectives of this mission. Let's promise ourselves to do this.

Short Elocution on Swachh Bharat

Here’s a short Swachh Bharat Abhiyan speech in English, covering the major factors of the mission of cleaning India.

Today, I am here to present my opinion on ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’. 'Swachh Bharat Project' is a significant campaign in India, and on the day of its launch, around 3 million government employees and students took part in it. This project seeks active participation by individuals of any age group from all corners of the country. This movement was launched on October 2, 2014 (Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary) to achieve the 'Swachh Bharat' dream of Mahatma Gandhi.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan's goals include access to personal toilets, eliminating defecation in the open, raising public awareness about cleanliness, using toilets among ordinary people, encouraging change of behaviour, keeping villages clean, proper disposal of solid, and liquid wastes. Due to poverty, lack of education, lack of cleanliness, and other social problems, India is still a developing nation.

We need to eradicate all the issues that hamper the growth and development of our nation from society. I believe that the Sanitation Campaign is the best way to put an end to one of the major social problems of society and to facilitate the development of the country through the development of its people. Big positive change in India can only be brought about by the success of the Sanitation Campaign. It is connected to the internal and external growth and development of all those living in India, which tells us that the slogan of "clean, happy, and healthy citizens who provide a healthy and developed nation" is great.

Introduction

During his time before India’s independence, Mahatma Gandhi said, “Sanitation is more important than Independence.” Our Bapu, Mahatma Gandhi, was particularly concerned in eradicating, alongside the British, all the dirt and pollutants that afflicted our nation and its people. When did Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launch?

Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee stated in a speech to Parliament in June 2014, “A Swachh Bharat Mission will be launched to ensure hygiene, waste management, and sanitation across the nation.” This would be our tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary, which will be honored in 2019.” On the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (2nd October 2014), Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched the campaign at Rajghat in New Delhi in order to accomplish Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of making India an ideal country in the world. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

What is the Objective of the Swachh Bharat Campaign

India, a country of 140 million people, has a major problem with the management of waste. Irresponsible people discard their household waste on the roadways, which leads to dirt and grime and, in turn, a variety of diseases. Thousands of people are affected by malignant diseases caused by poor sanitation and hygiene. The Swachh Bharat Yojana was introduced by the Indian government to address these issues.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan seeks to make India included on the list of “clean countries”.The primary goal of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to eliminate the harmful practice of open defecation and provide basic sanitation amenities such as toilets, solid-liquid waste disposal systems, and clean drinking water. The Swachh Bharat Mission was established with the primary objectives of creating a nation with an abundance of sanitation facilities and eradicating all unhealthy habits in daily routines. Every Indian village and city must be made clean as part of this mission. Which toilet layout is also featured in every home.

One of the goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to make residents aware of their primary responsibility to preserve cleanliness and prevent pollution from spreading throughout the country.

  • People from many walks of life have made the Swachh Bharat vow to keep their surroundings clean and to actively contribute to keeping India clean.
  • People have also been made aware of the need for cleanliness. People must refrain from open defecation and from throwing waste anywhere. In the countryside and towns, sanitation facilities are constantly being built. Garbage vans were established to tackle the problem of rubbish in metropolitan areas, allowing garbage to be removed from one location to another.
  • Swachh Bharat Kosh and Swachh Survekshan are two projects that have been developed to mobilize resources, raise awareness, and assess the cleanliness of cities and villages. The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) was founded as the nodal body in charge of organizing and implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • The F nine people Salman Khan, Anil Ambani, Kamal Hassan, comedian Kapil Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Baba Ramdev, Sachin Tendulkar, Shashi Tharoor, and a team from ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’ (a popular TV show) were  nominated by the Prime Minister to launch and promote the Swachh Bharat campaign. • To ensure the hygiene of Uttar Pradesh’s government buildings, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh outlawed the chewing of paan, gutka, and other tobacco products totally.
  • Insufficient and poor health was exacerbated by insufficient hygiene and cleanliness. People’s health improved as a result of this cleanliness campaign, and death rates have decreased since then. Annually. Because of improved health, each household saves Rs. 6,500.
  • To sustain and make this effort successful, the Finance Ministry of India has launched a program called Swachh Bharat cess, under which everyone in India must pay a 0.5% tax on all services (i.e., 50 paise every 100 rupees), which would support the cleanliness campaign.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen also yielded significant results, with over 10 crore home toilets constructed. In addition, about 6 million communities have been designated as ODF. As of October 2, 2019, household toilet coverage had reached 100%, up from 38.70% in 2014.

As we have all heard the famous phrase, “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness,” we can confidently state that the Clean India Campaign (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan) would bring godliness all throughout the country for years if the people of India adhere to it properly.

Today, India has taken strides toward cleanliness through this effort, but the objective of cleanliness remains a long way off. Achieving the aim of a clean India can never be feasible unless we work together to clean our surroundings and prevent others from making them dirty. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has sparked a nationwide cleaning movement, demonstrating citizens’ common duty to create a cleaner and healthier India.

“A clean environment leads to a healthy life. Let’s join hands and clean our nation.”

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, an initiative by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an attempt towards a cleaner India. It was launched on Oct 2nd, 2014 to celebrate the 145th birth anniversary of our Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and his ideologies about cleanliness. It is a nationwide cleanliness drive run under the Ministry of Drinking and Sanitation (rural areas) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (urban areas). The campaign was sighted for five years and believed in accomplishing the proposed plans by Oct 2nd, 2019 which marks the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The main objective of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is to aware the citizens of the country of their utmost priority and responsibility towards cleanliness in the nearby surroundings and the spread of filth and infectious parasites. The campaign primarily focuses on eradicating the unhealthy practices of open defecation and provide basic sanitation facilities by constructing toilets, solid-liquid waste disposal systems, supplying clean drinking water, etc. It aims at covering around 4041 statutory towns and cities across the country for cleaner streets, roads, towns, and infrastructure.

PM Modi nominated nine public figures to spread the word which include Sachin Tendulkar, Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Baba Ramdev, Shashi Tharoor, Kamal Hassan, Anil Ambani , Mridula Sinha, and the entire star-cast of the famous TV series- Taarak Mehta ka Oolta Chashma. They were asked to create a chain system by further nominating nine people.

PM Modi assures that this mission is to awake a sense of patriotism among the people and is not any political agenda. He encouraged people to work together as a team and dedicate 100 hours per year to the mission as it can’t be fulfilled by one person or the government alone. On the contrary, it is the sole duty and responsibility of each and every citizen of India to keep the country clean and green.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs. 62,009 crore for the duration of five years. Out of the whole estimated budget, Rs. 14,623 crore has been funded by the central government. World Bank also provided some financial assistance for the successful implementation of the campaign.

The success of the mission resulted in reduced death & lethal disease rates and annual benefits of Rs. 50,000 per household in rural areas. Clean India attracted many tourists worldwide and ultimately enhanced the GDP and economy of the nation with an increase in the number of employment sources.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a great accomplishment and proved out to a one of a kind project in the history of India. We must carry forward the practices of cleanliness with the same enthusiasm and zeal and help each other by keeping our Mother India clean and beautiful.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: Ek Kadam Swachhta Ki Aur

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a reminder for the citizens of the nation to respect nature and not stain its beauty. Also, it is the sole duty of each and every citizen to keep the surroundings clean and green. Alone we can only think, together we can bring change. It is the collective effort that counts in the end. Cursing the government every time and not doing anything for the same will not yield any results. The mission must be a combined endeavour of the people and its government.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan consists of two components and is run under two different departments.

  • Ministry of Home and Urban Affairs , which monitors the cleanliness drive in the urban parts of the country. The project is called Swachh Bharat Mission- Urban.
  • Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation , which oversees sanitation coverage in rural areas. The project is called Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin.

PM Narendra Modi received the Global Goalkeeper award from Gates Foundation for his efforts towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make India a cleaner country. He was presented with the award on 25th Sept 2019 in New York.

Need of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Mahatma Gandhi believed that Sanitation is more important than independence . A mission like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was the need of the hour if we look back at the situation in 2014. It was becoming very crucial to maintain right cleanliness, proper sanitation and hygienic surroundings. Young children were prone to suffer from diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, etc. due to poor hygiene and malnutrition. Consequently, 1000 children a day die of diarrhoeal deaths. A UN report said almost 60% of people in India practice open defecation and inclined towards poor health and lethal diseases.

According to a World Bank report, 6.4% of GDP is declining annually in India due to poor health conditions of people. During the launch of the event, PM Modi underlined how the mission could be an economic activity, the growth of GDP rates, fewer healthcare costs, and sources of employment.

Ganga river is one of the most substantial sources of water in North India. The water of the river is considered to be unsafe for bathing as it contains 120 times the amount of permitted faecal coliform bacteria. The reason being the open defecation of excreta.

India bears the cost of 600,000 lives every year due to poor hygiene and sanitation facilities. Also, 1/3rd of the nation’s women population is exposed to the risk of rapes and sexual assault due to lack of toilets.

PM Modi in the pursuit of fulfilling the dream of Mahatma Gandhi of a cleaner India launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan with great zeal and high spirits. The government aimed at accomplishing the following objectives by the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji i.e. 2nd October 2019.

  • Complete and proper sanitation facilities
  • Total eradication of open defecation practices
  • Elimination of manual scavenging
  • Conversion of insanitary toilets into pour-flush toilets
  • Scientific approach towards the solid waste management system
  • Spread awareness about public hygiene and healthy sanitation practices
  • Capacity augmentation of Urban Local Bodies (ULB)
  • Installation of water pipelines to ensure regular water supply to all households.

The aforementioned objectives of the mission will ensure the good health of the people. It will also lower the rates of pollution and assurance of cleaner air, water, parks, roads and homes.

Implementation

An online portal called Swachh Bharat has been launched. It encourages people to participate in Swachhta related activities and facilitates them accordingly. The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation also launched an app named SwachhApp that monitors the improvement in sanitation coverage in rural areas. With the help of this app, anyone can view the number of toilets constructed in a particular area.

The eligible beneficiaries in rural areas who were constructing private household toilets on their own were awarded Rs. 12,000 as an incentive , which also included the water storage provisions.

The government also certified cities as ODF+ or ODF++ that have maintained proper sanitation and water supply.

The total cost of the project was estimated to be Rs. 62,009 crores, out of which the central government provides assistance of Rs. 14,623 crore. A total amount of Rs. 11,300 crore was allocated for the project in the 2016-17 Union budget, out of which Rs. 9,000 crore was for the rural areas and Rs. 2,300 crore for the urban parts of the country. The government also collected 0.5% additional tax as Swachh Bharat cess on various goods and services. An amount of Rs. 9,851.41 crore was added to the budget from the tax.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan also sought help from the World Bank. It approved a loan of amount US $1.5 billion to support the campaign in 2015.

It is an enhanced and explicit program of the 1986 Central Rural Sanitation Program, the Total Sanitation Campaign of 1999, and the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan of 2012.

Why Is This Swachh Bharat So Critical?

The Swachh Bharat community continues to increase the number of volunteers who complete Swachh Bharat Abhiyan missions at each location. All these activities aim to connect as many people as possible with the mission and create a mass movement to realize Gandhiji’s clean India dream by 2019.

Clean India-Green India

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan not only cleans the surroundings but also seeks to plant trees, create a dust-free environment, provide sanitary facilities, and ultimately involve people on the road to Swachh Bharat.

Clean India is most important to promote the country as an ideal destination for tourists all over the world. A dirty Indian image is often an embarrassing problem for Indians.

Therefore, this is the right time and opportunity to join Swachh Bharat. This campaign not only helps citizens gain clean habits but also raises our image as a citizen and is a commitment to cleanliness.

Structure of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Clean India Mission campaign comprises two sub-campaigns, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Rural) and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan ( Urb a n ). Where ‘Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation’ and ‘Ministry of Rural Development’ connect for rural areas, the Urban Development Ministry handles cities.

Twelve crore toilets are to be constructed across the country by October 2, 2019, with the cost of individual toilets set at Rs 12000.

Make it Happen

Commitment to speed up better handling of solid and liquid wastes. Particular emphasis should be laid on the construction of toilets and their use.

It is heading and overseeing by the Prime Minister himself, so this mission is one of the national priorities. The Prime Minister launched the ‘Swachh Bharat Kosh’ to facilitate contribution and receipt of CSR funds.

Some villages have also declared their cleanliness day and responsibility of changing behavior has been taking by the youth, teachers, and women. The participation of every person and organization in the Swachh Bharat Mission is taking the form of a mass movement.

Importance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is proving to help increase the level of the girl’s education in the country due to the availability of toilets. Despite being a ‘state subject’ of cleanliness, the federal structure is being strengthened by this program prepared and conducted by the central government.

The significant effort to eradicate ‘manual scavenging’ on this head is proving to be a milestone. This campaign has been changing the habit of open defecation and making cleanliness a part of lifestyle for citizens. The goal of construction 12 crore toilets has proved to be a significant employment opportunity in the manufacturing sector.

By linking this scheme with MANREGA, the dilapidated condition of the MANREGA program has also been improving. The area of the Rural Sanitary Mart (RSM) has expanded.

Sulabh toilets currently employed over 50,000 people. This can become significant employment. The market for sanitary pads (related to women, children) may also be more comprehensive.

Challenges in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Sanitation facilities are not a ‘felt need’ for a large section of the Indian public. In some rural areas , the lack of proper acceptance of toilets construction is challenging.

Effective Solution of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Awareness is an effective way to participate. Therefore, the campaign to make people fully aware of the benefits should be made available to them.

It should provide free toilets for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. With the help of the enlightened, famous people of the society, in local language-culture has to carve and promote ‘cleanliness culture’ among the people.
