Hi, 1. His advice was a great help for me to achieve success as a teacher. 2. His advice was a great help to me to achieve success as a teacher. Are both sentences idiomatic? If so, what difference do you see between them? I guess 2. is not idiomatic because the formula of 'for A to do' is natural. Thanks in advance.  

Number one strikes my ear as idiomatic, for me to achieve . Two is not the common usage.

Moderator note: I have changed the title from "AA is a great help..." to "His advice is...", as the signification of "AA" was unclear.  

"... a great help to me" is a common collocation but nothing should follow it. I don't think either sentence is particularly idiomatic as they are being forced toward an unnatural form, i.e. they sound like exercises - use this idiom in a sentence.  

Thank you, Harry Batt, Matching Mole and Myridon. As Myridon says "His advice was a great help for me to achieve success as a teacher." sounds like an exercise, let me try to make a more natural sentence. I gave him an English-English dictionary. That would be a great help for him to learn English. Is this use of 'a great help for him to do' natural? Thanks in advance.

The Big Help Out on 8th May is the national day of volunteering, and we will be using this platform as an opportunity to encourage, champion and celebrate all volunteering throughout the year. We are asking the people of Dorset to make a pledge to volunteer.  Imagine, if every person aged 14+ in Dorset gave just one hour, we would have a contribution of 326,057 hours of help, skills and kindness to support our community.
