The rationale behind Science
Science is crucial for Class 9 students’ cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor development. It encourages curiosity, inventiveness, objectivity, and aesthetic sense.
In the upper primary stage, students should be given a variety of opportunities to engage with scientific processes such as observing, recording observations, drawing, tabulating, plotting graphs, and so on, whereas in the secondary stage, abstraction and quantitative reasoning should take a more prominent role in science teaching and learning. As a result, the concept of atoms and molecules as matter’s building units, as well as Newton’s law of gravitation, emerges.
Science is important because it allows Class 9 Science students to understand the world around us. It helps to find out how things work and to find solutions to problems at the Class 9 Science level. Science is also a source of enjoyment for many people. It can be a hobby, a career, or a source of intellectual stimulation.

Going through these chapter-wise solutions will improve your understanding of the concepts and will also boost your confidence, keeping you ready ahead of the crucial CBSE Class 9 Science examination. There are several techniques explained here that you can use for preparing well in Science.
You can always carry a little diary or notebook where you can jot down the crucial formulas/ principles or definitions to be used for particular sections. Note down a few terms and diagrams illustrating the experiments, explaining the important principles. You may also use it for last-minute revision. You need to have a thorough understanding of all the concepts rather than going through each and every word of the text and trying to remember the same. Resolve your doubts, if any, by attending the live classes at Vedantu without any hassles.
You must prepare a study plan as well if you want to do well in your exams. This way you will be able to space out your time and you will understand what topics and concepts you must focus on more. While creating your study plan you must make sure that you give time to yourself to breathe and take some rest. If you sit to study for hours you may get tired easily and your brain won’t be able to retain a lot of information altogether. You should also make sure that you take care of yourself during your examination. You must eat healthy and get sufficient sleep during your exams.
One of the best ways to prepare for your exams would be to practice. You must practice as much as you can. You can solve previous year’s papers, sample papers, and other question banks. This will help you get an idea of the exam pattern and the type of questions that can be asked. You must solve previous year’s question papers which are at least 10 years old. Apart from understanding the question and question paper pattern, you will even be able to manage your time properly. Time management is very important when it comes to writing an exam. You must know which section to pay more attention to and which section you will be able to finish quickly. Practicing with sample papers and other question banks will help you to manage your time accordingly.
Do not make a habit of procrastinating and allow your mind sufficient time to get a grasp of new concepts. Start your preparation early and spare the last few days for exams. Prior to the exams, make sure you have covered all the topics beforehand. Learning new things just before the exams will not be favourable. Also, if you get study leaves before your exams then utilize those days carefully. Make a timetable and chalk out your subjects. Science subjects need more time to practice so allot at least 2-3 hours in a day for Science. Practice the numericals in the first hour and then spend another hour on revision and reading. You should also solve a few questions every day. Try to sit to study as early in the morning as possible when your mind is fresh. This is the time when your mind is the most active. If you have someone at home to help you out with studies, ask him/her to sit with you and check your answers when you solve them. Go through the corrections yourself to know where you went wrong. If you do not have anyone to help you out, try to do it yourself.
You should also understand that referring to NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science is considered to be sufficient to prepare for your examinations. These solutions are framed by Vedantu keeping in mind the abilities of students. These solutions are provided in detail to help you easily understand all the complex topics and concepts. You can even learn technique and tricks to understand the topics better. In order for you to get an overall idea of the concepts, you must start to prepare for your exam beforehand.
Some Other Vital Suggestions for Studying
Another suggestion to study better is to have group studies. However, for this purpose, you and your group have to be really serious and dedicated. When you study in groups, you help each other to understand topics better. When you try to explain something to your friend, your own concepts are clarified better. This way both you and your friend benefit from a group study session. This is something you should always keep in mind since you have to ensure full utilization of these sessions. This is a good habit to have, particularly before the examinations.
Make a habit of solving question papers from the previous year. This will help you to get a hold of the different topics and question patterns usually followed in the exam. In case you do not have the previous years’ question papers, then get hold of some mock test question papers or sample test papers. Solving them is beneficial as you will be fully prepared with the format. Having a set of formulas ready for revision helps you with solving the sums. When you are revising through chapters that require you to do sums, have a separate notebook for writing down the formula. This book is of great help for last moment revision. You will not have to go through page after page looking for the formulas. All you need to do is open the notebook and check the formulas you need. This will help you stay abreast of the important formulas without having to really fret about finding them all over again in case you forget. A common scenario isn’t it? Well, a little strategy will help you overcome these hurdles with ease.
If you are a student who has problems with maths, you will need to practice a bit more than the others. Your theory should be well-prepared so that you can score better in that part. If you have the fear of mathematics, then make it a point to overcome that fear. Do not worry! Maths is not that difficult! All you have to do is forget the difficulty and practice daily. That is the only mantra behind acing maths. Just wake up in the morning and practice 2-3 sums from each chapter. Read the questions carefully before attempting the problem. Understand what it wants and what is already given. Go ahead with it when you understand the question properly.
One more important tip before exams that one must follow is being less distracted. You may think your guardian is being absolutely ruthless when he/she asks you not to watch TV before exams. But what he/she means is that you should wisely utilize your time and distract your mind. It is very important to get into that mindset of studying before exams. Try not getting disturbed or distracted as your mind needs to be in the right state to help you prepare. Allot a specific time for activities such as watching TV or playing video games. Make a time table for that too. You can study the whole day and have a recess period of 2 hours after studying, preferably at night before you go to bed.
Before you write your exam you must make sure that you do a complete revision at least 3 times. Make sure that you don’t learn any new topics one night before the exam. This will only lead to confusion and you might even forget the other topics and concepts that you learned. You should revise one day before the exam, during the night, and then you can do a quick revision in the morning. With the notes that you have, revising concepts and topics will make it easier for you to do. For Class 9 Science , it is important for you to revise how to draw all the diagrams that are required for the examination. This will help you score better marks.
What Else Should You Know While Preparing?
Eating and sleeping sufficiently before exams are very necessary for your body. Eat your food on time and sleep on time. Do not compromise on sleep or go to bed late just the night before your exam. This can cause severe headaches in the morning, potentially making you fall sick while writing your exam. Take proper food with a balanced diet plan so that both your body and mind are healthy.
Lastly, do not take too much pressure. If you are having a problem with any chapter, just get help from Vedantu. Do not stress too much and take short breaks in between study hours. Sitting for long periods can give you back pain and stress you out. Start with the difficult chapters first and then move on to the chapters you find easy. Keep your notes and books arranged so that you do not have to get up repeatedly. Keep cell phones and video games away from the study table. Anything that distracts you should remain out of your sight.
On the day of the examination, try not to discuss what you learned with your friends. This can lead to further confusion for both you and your friends. The way you may have learned a particular concept could be different as compared to the way your friends may have learned a particular topic. Apart from this you may also get confused as to if you missed any topics while studying or not. But don’t worry, you have given your best in your preparation and you will do well according to how you have studied.
These are tried and tested methods and have yielded results for lakhs of students like you all over the country. So, wishing you all the best for your preparation for the CBSE Class 9 Science examination . We advise you to be positive, confident as well as get the concepts clear for good exam performance and a high score. Also, revise the solutions to past question papers after understanding the content of the relevant chapters.

Atoms and Molecules Case Study Questions With Answers
Here, we have provided case-based/passage-based questions for Class 9 Science Chapter 3 Atoms and Molecules
Case Study/Passage-Based Questions
Case Study 1: The knowledge of the valencies of various radicals helps us to write the formulae of chemical compounds. The total positive charge on positive ions (cations) is equal to the total negative charge on negative ions (anions) in a molecule. Therefore, in writing the formula of a compound, the positive and negative ions are adjusted in such a way that the total number of positive charges of positive ions (cations) becomes equal to the total number of negative charges of negative ions (anions). There is another simple method for writing the formulae of ionic compounds. In this method, the valencies (or positive or negative charges) of the ions can be ‘crossed over’ to give subscripts. The purpose of crossing over of charges is to find the number of ions required to equalise the number of positive and negative charges.
Element X has two valencies 5 and 3 and Y has valency 2. The elements X and Y are most likely to be respectively (a) copper and sulphur (b) sulphur and iron (c) phosphorus and fluorine (d) nitrogen and iron.
Answer: (d) nitrogen and iron.
The formula of the sulphate of an element X is X 2 (SO 4 ) 3 . The formula of nitride of element X will be (a) X 2 N (b) XN 2 (c) XN (d) X 2 N 3
Answer: (c) XN
The formula of a compound is X 3 Y. The valencies of elements X and Y will be respectively (a) 1 and 3 (b) 3 and 1 (c) 2 and 3 (d) 3 and 2
Answer: (a) 1 and 3
Case Study/Passage Based Questions
Case Study 2: A mole of an atom is a collection of atoms whose total mass is the number of grams equal to the atomic mass. Since an equal number of moles of different elements contain an equal number of atoms it becomes convenient to express the amounts of the elements in terms of moles. A mole represents a definite number of particles viz, atoms, molecules, ions or electrons. This definite number is called the Avogadro number or Avogadro constant which is equal to 6.022 × 1023. Hence a mole represents 6.022 × 1023 particles of the substance. One mole of a substance represents one gram-formula of the substance. One mole of a gas at standard temperature and pressure occupies 22.4 litres.

Answer: (d) 158 g
Case Study 3: According to Dalton’s atomic theory, all matter whether an element, a compound, or a mixture is composed of small particles called atoms which can neither be created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction. Dalton’s theory provides a simple explanation for the laws of chemical combination. He used his theory to explain the law of conservation of masses, the law of constant proportions, and the law of multiple proportions, based on various postulates of the theory. Dalton was the first scientist to use the symbols for the elements in a very specific sense. When he used a symbol for an element he also meant a definite quantity of that element, that is one atom of that element.
Which postulate of Dalton’s atomic theory is the result of the law of conservation of mass? (a) Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed. (b) Each element is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. (c) All the atoms of a given element are identical. (d) During chemical combination, atoms of different elements combine in simple ratios.
Answer: (a) Atoms can neither be created nor destroyed.
Which postulate of Dalton’s atomic theory explains law of definite proportions? (a) Atoms of an element do not change during a chemical reaction. (b) An element consists of atoms having fixed mass and the number and kind of atoms in a given compound is fixed. (c) Different elements have different kind of atoms. (d) Atoms are of various kinds
Answer: (b) An element consists of atoms having fixed mass and the number and kind of atoms in a given compound is fixed.
“If 100 g of calcium carbonate (whether in the form of marble or chalk) is decomposed, 56 g of calcium oxide and 44 g of carbon dioxide are formed.” Which law of chemical combination is illustrated by this statement? (a) Law of constant proportions (b) Law of conservation of mass (c) Law of multiple proportions (d) Law of conservation of energy
Answer: (b) Law of conservation of mass
When 5 g calcium is burnt in 2 g oxygen, 7 g of calcium oxide is produced. When 5 g of calcium is burnt in 20 g of oxygen, then also 7 g of calcium oxide is produced. Which law of chemical combination is being followed? (a) Law of conservation of mass (b) Law of multiple proportions (c) Law of constant proportions (d) No law is being followed.
Answer: (c) Law of constant proportions
Case Study 4: Atoms and molecules are the building blocks of matter. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that retains its chemical properties, while a molecule is a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. Atoms consist of a positively charged nucleus, which contains protons and neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons in energy levels or shells. The number of protons in an atom determines its atomic number and defines its unique identity as an element. The electrons in an atom occupy specific energy levels, and the outermost shell is known as the valence shell. Atoms gain, lose, or share electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration, forming chemical bonds and giving rise to molecules. Understanding the concept of atoms and molecules is crucial for comprehending various chemical reactions and the composition of substances.

v.) Different characteristics of particles of matter are
Case Study 2:
2.) There are three states of matter – solid, liquid and gas.
Solids have a definite shape, distinct boundaries and fixed volumes, that is, have negligible compressibility. Solids have a tendency to maintain their shape when subjected to outside force. Solids may break under force but it is difficult to change their shape, so they are rigid.
Liquids have no fixed shape but have a fixed volume. They take up the shape of the container in which they are kept. Liquids flow and change shape, so they are not rigid but can be called fluid.
Gas as has indefinite shape, no fixed volume. Gas gets the shape and volume of container.
Gas has very low density hence are light. Gas can flow easily and hence are called fluid.
i.) Which of the following state of matter takes shape of container in which it is filled?
d.) Both b and c
ii.) Distance between particles of matter least in
iii.) Compressibility is least in case of
iv.) Give properties of solids.
v.) Give properties of Gases.
Answer key-2
iv.) properties of solid are given below
- Solid has fixed volume.
- Solid has fixed shape.
- Solid has high density.
- Solids are heavy.
- Solid does not flow.
v.) Properties of gases are
- Gas has indefinite shape
- Gas has no fixed volume.
- Gas gets the shape and volume of container.
- Gas fills the container completely.
- Gas has very low density.
- Because of low density gas are light.
- Gas can flow easily and hence are called fluid.
Case Study 3:
3.) What happens inside the matter during change of state? On increasing the temperature of solids, the kinetic energy of the particles increases. Due to the increase in kinetic energy, the
Particles start vibrating with greater speed. The energy supplied by heat overcomes the forces of attraction between the particles. The particles leave their fixed positions and start moving more freely. A stage is reached when the solid melts and is converted to a liquid. The minimum temperature at which a solid melts to become a liquid at the atmospheric pressure is called its melting point.
The temperature of the system does not change after the melting point is reached, till all the ice melts. This happens even though we continue to heat the beaker, that is, we continue to supply heat. This heat gets used up in changing the state by overcoming the forces of attraction between the particles. The amount of heat energy that is required to change 1 kg of a solid into liquid at atmospheric pressure at its melting point is known as the latent heat of fusion. So, particles in water at 0 0 C (273 K) have more energy as compared to particles in ice at the same temperature.
The temperature at which a liquid starts boiling at the atmospheric pressure is known as its boiling point. Boiling is a bulk phenomenon. Particles from the bulk of the liquid gain enough energy to change into the vapour state. A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state is called sublimation and the direct change of gas to solid without changing into liquid is called deposition.
i.) A change of state directly from solid to gas without changing into liquid state is called
a.) Sublimation
b.) Deposition
c.) Boiling point
ii.) The direct change of gas to solid without changing into liquid is called
iii.) The energy supplied by heat to solid is used to overcome the forces of attraction between the particles. True or false
iv.) Define melting point and boiling point
v.) Define latent heat of fusion
Answer key-3

v.) The amount of heat energy that is required to change 1 kg of a solid into liquid at atmospheric pressure at its melting point is known as the latent heat of fusion.
Case Study 4:
4 .) Do we always need to heat or change pressure for changing the state of matter? Can you quote some examples from everyday life where change of state from liquid to vapour takes place without the liquid reaching the boiling point? In the case of liquids, a small fraction of particles at the surface, having higher kinetic energy, is able to break away from the forces of attraction of other particles and gets converted into vapour. This phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapors at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
i.) Evaporation of liquid takes place at
a.) Boiling point
b.) Above boiling point
c.) Below boiling point
ii.) Evaporation takes place at surface of liquid because
a.) They are heavy as compare to other particles
b.) They have sufficient kinetic energy to break the force
c.) They are light weight as compare to other particles
iii.) During evaporation particles of liquid change into vapour
a.) From the surface
b.) From the bottom
c.) From all over the liquid
iv.) Define evaporation.
v.) Explain process of evaporation
Answer key-4
iv.) The phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapors at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
v.) In the case of liquids, a small fraction of particles at the surface, having higher kinetic energy, is able to break away from the forces of attraction of other particles and gets converted into vapour. This phenomenon of change of a liquid into vapors at any temperature below its boiling point is called evaporation.
Case Study 5:
5.) You must have observed that the rate of evaporation increases with–
- an increase of surface area:
- We know that evaporation is a surface phenomenon. If the surface area is increased, the rate of evaporation increases. For example, while putting clothes for drying up we spread them out.
- an increase of temperature:
With the increase of temperature, more number of particles get enough kinetic energy to go into the vapour state.
In an open vessel, the liquid keeps on evaporating. The particles of liquid absorb energy from the surrounding to regain the energy lost during evaporation. This absorption of energy from the surroundings makes the surroundings cold. What happens when you pour some acetone (nail polish remover) on your palm? The particles gain energy from your palm or surroundings and evaporate causing the palm to feel cool. After a hot sunny day, people sprinkle water on the roof or open ground because the large latent heat of vaporization of water helps to cool the hot surface.
i.) Evaporation is surface phenomenon. True or false
ii.) As temperature increases the rate of evaporation is
a.) increases
b.) decreases
c.) remains constant
iii.) The rate of evaporation increases with
a.) Increase in wind speed
b.) Decrease in wind speed
c.) Does not have any effect from wind speed
iv.) What happens when you pour some acetone (nail polish remover) on your palm?
v.) We are able to sip hot tea from saucer than from cup. Why?
Answer key-5
iv.) The particles gain energy from your palm or surroundings and evaporate causing the palm to feel cool.
v.) We are able to sip hot tea from saucer than from cup. This is because saucer has large surface area, due to large surface area as compare to cut area tea evaporates at faster rate.
Thank you It helped me a lot
Why smell of Perfume is not a matter?
