Creating the Perfect PowerPoint for Online Teaching

While other forms of visual presentations have cropped up—such as Prezi and Empressr —PowerPoint remains the presentation software of choice. Yet many folks develop PowerPoint presentations without fully understanding all components of the software and/or presenter tricks that could make for much more effective PowerPoint presentations.

The suggestions that follow will help you create effective PowerPoint presentations.

Know your audience. You must be fully aware of what the audience is expecting from your PowerPoint; also, be aware of your audience’s education level—the complexity of your text and visuals must match what the audience will understand.

Create an outline to help you develop your PowerPoint presentation. The outline gives your PowerPoint the structure it requires, allows you to develop a balanced array of visuals, and gives you an initial look at the time required for students to view your PowerPoint slides. Your PowerPoint should not be so long that the audience loses interest, and if you have a set amount of time, you need be sure your PowerPoint fits within that time.

Become familiar with all features of PowerPoint. PowerPoint is a powerful presentation tool with many features that allow you to jazz up your slides, import other slides, add audio and video, change background styles and colors, etc. Spend whatever time it takes to fully familiarize yourself with all that PowerPoint offers; you’ll be able to develop a more professional and engaging PowerPoint presentation—something your audience will appreciate.

Do not become dazzled with the “whistles and bells” of PowerPoint. It is easy to be seduced by the over-the-top features of PowerPoint, such as transition and animation. Yet too much use of these will distract from the primary purpose of your PowerPoint: getting important information to your audience in an easy-to-understand manner. Certainly, some of these fun tools can help make your PowerPoint more engaging and can spotlight especially salient items in your presentation. But be careful that your PowerPoint does not turn into a Disney cartoon, resulting in a presentation that is less than effective. Overall, keep the design simple and basic.

Limit each slide to a few bulleted points. Your audience needs to quickly understand what you are presenting. Many folks load up each slide with far too much text. This defeats the purpose of a PowerPoint presentation. Keep each slide to no more than four bulleted items, with each item a maximum of one line in length. If you need to add more information, you have two options: (1) have some notes (use your outline for this) and simply add the material—by voice—when appropriate; and (2) at the bottom of each blank slide there is a section called “Speaker’s Notes”—you can add in here what you want to say to your audience beyond what they see on a slide (only you can see the Speaker’s Notes).

Use graphics to highlight your information, not overtake it. A visual on a slide won’t take the place of your text—and it shouldn’t—but it can highlight a point you are making and help to engage the audience. Have a nice balance of visuals and colors, and spend some time searching for the spot-on, already-created visual. (There are many sources: online, your own, items you’ve scanned, etc.) You also can create your own graphs and/or charts and use screenshots of items.

Your voice can truly bring a PowerPoint to life. In an online PowerPoint presentation, the audience hears more of your voice than if you were in a room with them. Thus, each clearing of your throat, sip of water, “um” and “uh,” and licking of the lips can often be heard. Speak slowly; be sure to vary your tone (no one enjoys a monotone!); stay enthusiastic and excited about the topic; and use your voice to bring audience attention to important points, closing of a subject, introduction of the next slide, etc.

Always do a slideshow run of your PowerPoint to view it as an audience member. You’ll find one of the drop-down menu items on the top tool bar of PowerPoint is called “Slideshow.” Here you have various choices that allow you to view your PowerPoint as a slideshow. Be sure to do this so you will see what your audience will see and you can quickly pick up on items that might need to be corrected, such as typos, font size, size of or lack of visuals, too much text on a slide, length of time for the PowerPoint, etc. And for each slide, make a note (e.g., #14—correct spacing; #15—OK; etc.). Once completed, make the changes and then run the slideshow again.

Check spelling, grammar, spacing, font size and style, etc. It is crucial that all components of writing be perfect. Be sure that the font size and style are easy to read. Consider line spacing and visual placement.

Always do a trial run with at least one other person. While we will see items that need to be corrected or tweaked, rarely do we see them all. Have one person or more look at it to get their input. You’ll be surprised at how many helpful suggestions you will receive about things you had not considered or just didn’t see. Your audience will benefit from this extra input.

How technology is reinventing education

Stanford Graduate School of Education Dean Dan Schwartz and other education scholars weigh in on what's next for some of the technology trends taking center stage in the classroom.

powerpoint presentation about online education

New advances in technology are upending education, from the recent debut of new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots like ChatGPT to the growing accessibility of virtual-reality tools that expand the boundaries of the classroom. For educators, at the heart of it all is the hope that every learner gets an equal chance to develop the skills they need to succeed. But that promise is not without its pitfalls.

“Technology is a game-changer for education – it offers the prospect of universal access to high-quality learning experiences, and it creates fundamentally new ways of teaching,” said Dan Schwartz, dean of Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE), who is also a professor of educational technology at the GSE and faculty director of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning . “But there are a lot of ways we teach that aren’t great, and a big fear with AI in particular is that we just get more efficient at teaching badly. This is a moment to pay attention, to do things differently.”

For K-12 schools, this year also marks the end of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding program, which has provided pandemic recovery funds that many districts used to invest in educational software and systems. With these funds running out in September 2024, schools are trying to determine their best use of technology as they face the prospect of diminishing resources.

Here, Schwartz and other Stanford education scholars weigh in on some of the technology trends taking center stage in the classroom this year.

AI in the classroom

In 2023, the big story in technology and education was generative AI, following the introduction of ChatGPT and other chatbots that produce text seemingly written by a human in response to a question or prompt. Educators immediately worried that students would use the chatbot to cheat by trying to pass its writing off as their own. As schools move to adopt policies around students’ use of the tool, many are also beginning to explore potential opportunities – for example, to generate reading assignments or coach students during the writing process.

AI can also help automate tasks like grading and lesson planning, freeing teachers to do the human work that drew them into the profession in the first place, said Victor Lee, an associate professor at the GSE and faculty lead for the AI + Education initiative at the Stanford Accelerator for Learning. “I’m heartened to see some movement toward creating AI tools that make teachers’ lives better – not to replace them, but to give them the time to do the work that only teachers are able to do,” he said. “I hope to see more on that front.”

He also emphasized the need to teach students now to begin questioning and critiquing the development and use of AI. “AI is not going away,” said Lee, who is also director of CRAFT (Classroom-Ready Resources about AI for Teaching), which provides free resources to help teach AI literacy to high school students across subject areas. “We need to teach students how to understand and think critically about this technology.”

Immersive environments

The use of immersive technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality is also expected to surge in the classroom, especially as new high-profile devices integrating these realities hit the marketplace in 2024.

The educational possibilities now go beyond putting on a headset and experiencing life in a distant location. With new technologies, students can create their own local interactive 360-degree scenarios, using just a cell phone or inexpensive camera and simple online tools.

“This is an area that’s really going to explode over the next couple of years,” said Kristen Pilner Blair, director of research for the Digital Learning initiative at the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, which runs a program exploring the use of virtual field trips to promote learning. “Students can learn about the effects of climate change, say, by virtually experiencing the impact on a particular environment. But they can also become creators, documenting and sharing immersive media that shows the effects where they live.”

Integrating AI into virtual simulations could also soon take the experience to another level, Schwartz said. “If your VR experience brings me to a redwood tree, you could have a window pop up that allows me to ask questions about the tree, and AI can deliver the answers.”

Gamification

Another trend expected to intensify this year is the gamification of learning activities, often featuring dynamic videos with interactive elements to engage and hold students’ attention.

“Gamification is a good motivator, because one key aspect is reward, which is very powerful,” said Schwartz. The downside? Rewards are specific to the activity at hand, which may not extend to learning more generally. “If I get rewarded for doing math in a space-age video game, it doesn’t mean I’m going to be motivated to do math anywhere else.”

Gamification sometimes tries to make “chocolate-covered broccoli,” Schwartz said, by adding art and rewards to make speeded response tasks involving single-answer, factual questions more fun. He hopes to see more creative play patterns that give students points for rethinking an approach or adapting their strategy, rather than only rewarding them for quickly producing a correct response.

Data-gathering and analysis

The growing use of technology in schools is producing massive amounts of data on students’ activities in the classroom and online. “We’re now able to capture moment-to-moment data, every keystroke a kid makes,” said Schwartz – data that can reveal areas of struggle and different learning opportunities, from solving a math problem to approaching a writing assignment.

But outside of research settings, he said, that type of granular data – now owned by tech companies – is more likely used to refine the design of the software than to provide teachers with actionable information.

The promise of personalized learning is being able to generate content aligned with students’ interests and skill levels, and making lessons more accessible for multilingual learners and students with disabilities. Realizing that promise requires that educators can make sense of the data that’s being collected, said Schwartz – and while advances in AI are making it easier to identify patterns and findings, the data also needs to be in a system and form educators can access and analyze for decision-making. Developing a usable infrastructure for that data, Schwartz said, is an important next step.

With the accumulation of student data comes privacy concerns: How is the data being collected? Are there regulations or guidelines around its use in decision-making? What steps are being taken to prevent unauthorized access? In 2023 K-12 schools experienced a rise in cyberattacks, underscoring the need to implement strong systems to safeguard student data.

Technology is “requiring people to check their assumptions about education,” said Schwartz, noting that AI in particular is very efficient at replicating biases and automating the way things have been done in the past, including poor models of instruction. “But it’s also opening up new possibilities for students producing material, and for being able to identify children who are not average so we can customize toward them. It’s an opportunity to think of entirely new ways of teaching – this is the path I hope to see.”

20 Tips for Improving Educational PowerPoint Presentations

14830918_s-with-powerpoint-screenshot

Take a look at these 20 tips for improving powerpoint presentations:

  • Clarify for your students whether the PowerPoint is repeating the textbook material or supplementary to the textbook material.
  • Create an initial slide with an overview of what students can expect to learn in the PowerPoint presentation.
  • Use concise bullet points instead of long paragraphs of text.
  • Break up bullet points into separate slides , with images on each slide to represent each point. After you have completed a series of points, include a slide that summarizes all of the points together on one slide.
  • Incorporate examples to illustrate key concepts. In a classroom lecture, professors naturally incorporate examples to support their points, but in a stand-alone PowerPoint presentation, these examples must be spelled out within the presentation to enhance comprehension of the material.
  • If you are adapting a PowerPoint from lecture format to online delivery, keep in mind that your presentation must be self-explanatory . Consider adding a voice-over narration or adding a video of yourself superimposed on the presentation.
  • While key words may be enough for PowerPoints used in lectures, make sure to write only clear full sentences in PowerPoints intended for online delivery.
  • Design your slides with sharp contrast between the text and the background so that the text is easily readable.
  • Include relevant graphics to support key concepts. Studies have shown that adding relevant images can greatly enhance learning , but adding decorative graphics that are irrelevant can sometimes depress learning.
  • Add videos and relevant hyperlinks to your slides.
  • Incorporate animated text effects to add interest, but don’t go overboard lest it become a distraction.
  • Use animations to demonstrate a sequence or clarify complex concepts. Keep in mind that animated effects should be purposeful, not just for decoration.
  • Use pre-made PowerPoint templates to get a jumpstart on good design.
  • Check out other professors’ educational PowerPoints to get ideas of effective layouts, styles, and content.
  • Vary text sizes to indicate which pieces of information are most important, and to differentiate between headings, subheadings, and explanations.
  • Don’t try to squeeze too much text onto one slide.
  • Keep in mind that students might print out your slides , so make sure they are printer-friendly.
  • Break up longer PowerPoints into several smaller PowerPoints.
  • Use pptPlex to add Prezi-like functionality to your slides: zooming in and out of sections.
  • Add an interactive quiz right inside your PowerPoint to help students process the information they have just learned.

What is Online Education? How is it different than – and similar to – the traditional classroom? What are the tools? What are the benefits and the challenges to Wayne State? WebCT demonstration

What is Online Education? A method of course delivery unbound by time or location allowing students to access instruction from a computer via the Internet, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

How is Online Education different than – and similar to – the traditional classroom? Traditional classrooms offer face-to-face – synchronous – instruction. Students access instruction at “our time, our place.” Distance learning classrooms – video via satellite or internet, or instructors traveling to remote sites -- also offer face-to-face, synchronous instruction. Still “our time,” but perhaps closer to the student’s place.

How is Online Education different than – and similar to – the traditional classroom? Online Education is asynchronous. Course instruction, content and communication are provided and accessed via the World Wide Web, meaning that students can be “in the classroom” whenever they want. This does not mean that a faculty member must be available to students 24 hours a day. Online course software and a well-planned online class can ensure that the experience is valuable to the student but not an undue burden to the teacher.

How is Online Education different than – and similar to – the traditional classroom? Educational goals and practices should be the same in an online course as in a traditional classroom. The National Education Association’s Distance Education Quality Checklist includes the following guidelines:

NEA Distance Education Quality Checklist Online courses must: Be at least as rigorous as similar courses delivered by more traditional means Meet accreditation standards Have content that is relevant, accurate, meets state and local standards, and is subject to the normal processes of collegial decision making Meet the objectives and requirements outlined in the official course description Have student/faculty ratios that ensure the active engagement of students and high academic achievement

What are the tools? Online course software offers a variety of tools that can enable the instructor to meet the standards of educational quality, including: Means of posting and accessing syllabus, schedule and other course content in written, video or audio formats Means of transmitting assignments Communication tools such as discussion boards, chat rooms and integrated e-mail Integrated gradebook

What are the benefits and the challenges to Wayne State? Benefits: *Potential to increase enrollment by tapping into into expanded service region *Reaching working adults whose schedules don’t accommodate traditional attendance *Allows us to compete with other institutions in the region offering online courses

What are the benefits and the challenges to Wayne State? Challenges: *Developing and marketing online programs – not offering scattershot individual classes *Training and assisting faculty in development and delivery of online courses *Enabling faculty to transfer their pedagogical skills -- which they have developed in the traditional classroom -- into the virtual classroom

WebCT Demo Final thought: A 1999 study by Thomas Russell, North Carolina State University, found “no significant difference” between traditional courses and online courses, provided that instructors develop their courses with sound pedagogical techniques, and that the instructors employ a variety of teaching activities to engage their online students – just as they would to create a successful traditional class. Russell, Thomas, The No Significant Difference Phenomenon,1999, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Graphics by Jeff Piper, NATS

Online Education PPT, PowerPoint Presentation, and PDF

Online Education PPT, PowerPoint Presentation, and PDF : It is no wonder how people are opting for online degree programs all across the world through online education. Online learning has to be an extreme revolution in contemporary education. It has made great changes in the system and opened doors for a pool of opportunities for every person who wants to enhance their learning.

Nonetheless, online education is attached to some stereotypes. People think that the students from online classes are enough smart, they’re a couch potato, don’t get real degrees, and even, not perfect for brick and mortar kind of studies. These no-so-true aspects of online education may discourage some people and they continue to be stuck in the traditional system of education. Allow us to explain why online education is more beneficial and effective than people think.

We have five top-rated advantages of online education that will inspire you and make you reconsider your choice towards the type of education that you will get. Let us take a peek at these below.

You can learn whatever you want

When you pick up a course from traditional education, then it would include traveling far away from your home, coping up with the difficulties of the unknown city, and struggling in a competitive environment for learning. With the help of online education, you can go for any program or course present in the conventional four-year universities. For instance, you can take any course that meets with your interest and enhances knowledge even if you do not want to establish your career in this field. No matter where you live, you can find a course or even a degree program that you can follow from your place.

No need to attend all brick-and-mortar classes by sitting on an uncomfortable chair for long and suffering from back pain at the end of the day. You will not be restricted to attend any physical classes when you have applied for online learning. All lectures as well as associated materials have provided through the online platforms and you will access them from home comfort. In addition to this, there is no need to take transport from home to university and spend some extra bucks or dress up early in the morning. The list of convenience is never-ending.

Add great value to resume

Irrespective of your career stands at the moment, an online program always looks great and add value to the resume. It will display that you are dedicated to learning things and always excited to learn something new that enhances your knowledge as well as skills. A degree is a degree that is filled with all knowledge and no manager considers online education inferior to that of traditional ones. If you owe a degree from a prestigious university, then it will brighten your career quickly. Certainly, you will become a better candidate for the job promotion and make your resume look better.

Online Learning is affordable and convenient for everyone in comparison with the traditional kind of classes. You will earn a degree, enhance career, and increase your knowledge too.

An online graduate program at UD just ranked among nation's top-20: Education roundup

powerpoint presentation about online education

Death, school taxes, University of Delaware in the news.

These could be considered the new constants. Tuesday is set to bring Brandywine School District to a referendum vote — the first of six school districts headed to the polls this spring alone, looking to increase revenue, fuel projects and keep pace. We made a breakdown for keeping track of upcoming school funding referenda .

Over in Newark, the University of Delaware is celebrating new rankings for its online programs.

This joins a turbulent last week of announcing new budget tightening measures , alongside bracing for discussion of a possible " per-student tax " and lease tax on UD being considered by the city of Newark.

In other news, the state is looking for sponsors to help feed kids in need this summer. And, DCAD students just landed an impressive new technology center.

In this weekly roundup, we'll catch you up on these and other education updates you may have missed:

[ Did we miss another good education story?  Tell me about it: [email protected] . ]

University of Delaware online graduate program ranks among nation's top 20

Several graduate programs at UD just landed top spots in national rankings of higher education — and this time they're all online.

The university's online master's in education ranked No. 19, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best Online Programs , showing out among over 300 schools. Its online MBA programs moved up four spots to No. 29 out of 345 programs, "eclipsing other Philadelphia region business schools," the university said in a recent press release.

In a new ranking for Delaware's largest university, UD’s online master’s in information technology programs ranked No. 50. UD's online master’s in engineering programs ranked No. 65, and the online master’s in nursing programs ranked No. 133.

"A graduate degree is a valuable and desirable credential in many fields," said Louis Rossi, dean of the Graduate College and vice provost for graduate and professional education, in a statement.

U.S. News' general methodology has come under fire as of late. Last year, more than a dozen medical schools and more than 40 law schools ranked in the span of a few months announced they would no longer provide information to the outlet, which has ranked such programs since 1983. Debate there continues.

Regardless, as Rossi's statement continued: "It's great to have our efforts recognized in this way. … We expect to see our rankings continue to rise as we continue to devote ourselves to online learners through exceptional programs that serve them where they are.”

Delaware College of Art and Design marks grand opening of student tech center

"Connecting exploration and education, fostering collaboration and experimentation" — the Delaware College of Art and Design has launched its new Student Technology Center.

And from 3D printing to laser cutting, to computers, cameras and VR with gravity sketch modeling software: It sounds like a creative's paradise.

"The Student Technology Center is a testament to DCAD's commitment to providing cutting-edge resources for our students, cultivating a dynamic environment for creativity, collaboration and innovation," President Jean Dahlgren said in a press release ahead of the recent opening, also noting the project's fuel in a grant from the Crystal Trust Foundation.

A multifunctional space, including "The Vault," is set to serve as a gathering spot for students, with furniture, a large smart TV, an Oculus 3D VR system and open computers. A writer’s studio area also joins several features looking to foster some creative expression.

Department of Education seeks sponsors, sites for feeding kids this summer

Summer means no school, right? But for many students, school is also the one place for consistent meals.

One program targets children in lower-income areas each year, aiming to ensure they have meals during these warmer months. Right now, that Summer Food Service Program is seeking sponsors and meal sites to provide them.

Sponsors are reimbursed for all meals served free at approved sites, per the federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture nationally.

Who should hear this?

  • Sponsors : Sponsors can be units of local government, camps, schools or private nonprofit organizations.
  • Meal sites : Individual sites like camps, housing complexes, community centers, parks and homes are eligible. Sponsors would prepare and deliver the meals to the site (some locations may be served by a food truck, depending on availability). A site supervisor is required.
  • Children : Those 18 and younger can receive free meals and snacks. Meals and snacks also are available to persons with disabilities, over age 18, who participate in school programs.

Sponsors and sites will receive training and continued support from DDOE. More details on eligibility are available online .

More than 380,000 students, from some 2,100 K-12 schools across the United States and Canada, battled for "word domination," in the ninth annual Vocabulary Bowl late last year.

Now, the results are in. St. John the Beloved Catholic School in Milltown proved to be Delaware's state champion, mastering over 6,000 words throughout the competition, according to Vocabulary.com.

The platform tracks the progress of participating teachers and students. Students enrolled in classes sign in online and master as many words as they can through learning activities on the website. As the site sees it, the Vocabulary Bowl allows educators to "personalize instruction, boost literacy skills and inject competitive spirit into education."

The next bowl is already in season .

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Texas A&M Programs Top 10 In Online Education

Texas A&M University online programs rank among the nation’s best, according to U.S. News and World Report .

In its annual Best Online Programs ranking for 2024, the publication places three of the university’s programs in the nation’s Top 10 and nine in the Top 20; among them, nine programs lead the state. Several of Texas A&M’s programs rank highly in online graduate education for veterans.

“As a land-grant institution, our mission is to bring higher education opportunities to those with the passion and determination to succeed. We want to meet students where they are, and for some, that means earning a degree through an online education,” said General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III, president of Texas A&M University. “The latest rankings recognize the efforts of faculty and staff responsible for these online programs, as well as our students, some of whom may never step foot on campus until commencement, but they are Aggies nonetheless.”

Top 10 Programs

School of nursing, school of education and human development, top 20 programs, college of engineering, mays business school.

Methodologies for the rankings take into account factors including engagement; service and technologies; faculty credentials and training; and peer assessment.

Business communication is always evolving. With these courses and certification program, you can upskill for 2024

Group of co-workers has a discussion around a conference table

If you ask almost any professional about the most important hard skills, communication is almost always top of the list.

The ability to discuss strategy, goals, and solutions with others is paramount to any business; communication can truly be the make or break for companies small and large. Millions of dollars can be lost each year because of inadequate communication.

For these reasons, communication skills remain highly desired. Digital communication skills are the second most in-demand technical skill and communication more broadly—including written, oral, and presentation—remains among the top soft skills sought after by companies, according to Wiley’s Closing the Skills Gap 2023 report .

And with the workplace looking a lot different than it did just five years ago—with more remote work and AI integration, for example—the best ways to communicate are also changing.

“Skills today can generally get outmoded in about three to five years and so that means that we need to upskill really often,” says Angie Kamath, dean of the NYU School of Professional Studies .

Changing communication dynamics

One way to get ahead of the curve is to explore business communication courses. While they previously focused more on writing professional emails, completing research reports, creating effective presentations, today, the area has shifted to focus more deeply on data analytics, customer communication, social impact, and social media, Kamath notes.

Social media in particular has created new opportunities for businesses to sell products. According to Pew Research Center , 3 in 10 adult social media users have purchased a product after seeing it on social media—with the number rising if it is mentioned by a content creator they follow.

Because this shift is so broad and impactful, Kamath says integrated marketing has become the most popular master’s program that NYU’s professional studies school offers. For those who work deeply in the marketing and communications space—upskilling via a graduate program could be a great opportunity.

For others, completing a certification program or even simply taking a one-off communication course could be a great way to learn the most up-to-date practices—especially in the wake of new technology.

“So, we often try to help people understand how to use technology—flavor of the month or flavor for year is AI—but how to use technology to enhance what you’re doing from a communications standpoint,” Kamath tells Fortune .

At the same time, there are also human dynamics that have changed in the workforce, including around gender, diversity, aging, hybridity, and Gen Z. Therefore, in part, exiting your algorithm is critically important to learning new ideas and having conversation, Kamath says.

“Whether it’s in our job life or work life or personal life like social media, is sucking us in,” she adds. “We get to be in our echo chamber because the algorithm is telling us what to consume.”

Her advice is to find an offering that best addresses your interests and learning desires within three large skill buckets: human, business-enabling, and technical. A course may be able to touch on all three or focus deeply on one subject.

The good news is that there are a variety of program lengths, costs, requirements, and focuses, and while certificates are offered, you can also choose to just enroll in individual courses. Ultimately, it is most important to choose one that best fits into your modern career goals as well as personal circumstances.

Fortune has laid out some of the offerings on the market for you to upskill in the world of business communication.
