I wouldn't necessarily be inclined to follow Chris if his bio had simply read, "I post beautiful images." But images that inspire me to travel? Now that's something I can get behind.

Give people an idea of what you do daily and where you work. Your job title is how the people put you into context and consider whether your profession relates to their industry.

If your specialty is writing, your title could be "Freelance Writer," or if it's Help Desk or Information Technology, you may use "Freelance IT Specialist."
3. Add key skills or areas of expertise.
If you send a bio to a client or potential employer, highlight your most valuable skills. For instance, if your expertise is in social media marketing and content creation, like Ivanka Dekoning , list these skills.
4. Include a personal mission statement .
What do you hope to achieve through your work? Why do you do what you do? Answering these questions can help give your bio’s mission statement some direction.
For instance, Farmer Bea has a goal of helping to raise awareness about all things bees.
5. Celebrate your wins.
Your short bio can be a proud showcase of your accomplishments, so add one to two successes you’ve achieved through your skills or mission.

People who visit your profile or receive your message already know your social media account. But to take business off the app, include your email address, website, or any other professional profiles where they can reach you.

Don’t be afraid to add a bit of charisma to your short professional bio. “Professional” doesn’t have to mean plain. You can best portray your personality through:
- A joke. "Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. At least that’s what I learned when I created…"
- Mention a hobby. "I’ll be honest: for me, tennis is life — Go Nadal!"
- A fun fact. "Every year, I watch 100 new films! I’m a cinephile and love every movie genre."
- A few emojis related to your interests. "🎶🤖🎾🎬🎭"
Whichever way you choose to get personal, give people a glimpse into who you are as an individual.
When writing a short bio, it can be tempting to pack in as much relevant information about yourself as possible — but this isn’t the most effective approach.
Instead, focus on including the details that you and your audience care about most and leave out the fluff.

(Back then, it started with, "Corey just took a cool vacation.")
What I love most about Corey's bio is that it's a great example of how to deliver information about yourself without taking things too seriously. And in this context, that's totally appropriate.
Despite having several impressive accomplishments under her belt, she simply doesn't enjoy displaying them publicly. She prefers making her author bio a little "light."
Her bio reads, "Corey is a Bruce Springsteen fan who does content marketing, in that order."
It works in this context because, at HubSpot, our blog authors prefer to make themselves friendly and approachable — while letting their content speak for itself.
It helps that authors' social media accounts are located right below our names and above our pictures. This lets folks click the LinkedIn button and go to the author's LinkedIn page.

- It pitches her company’s product as the best CRM software.
- Pairing her perfect smile and the mention of a popular singer — Bruce Springsteen — adds humor to her bio, shows singing may be one of her interests, and makes her appear friendly.
2. Lianna Patch : Copywriter
Lianna Patch is a rockstar copywriter who has written for popular publications like Copy Hackers. What’s striking about Lianna’s bio is that it sums up everything you want in a copywriter.
I mean, see the first sentence of her bio — “Lianna’s greatest dream is to make your customers pause, smile, and click (in that order).”
- It’s punchy and welcoming.
- It shows the outcome companies can get by working with her.
- It has a call-to-action (CTA).
3. Precious Oboidhe : Content Strategist and Writer
I don’t check out an author's byline unless the post is interesting. My guess is you do the same. And most times, you do this because you may be interested in working with the writer.
This is where a short bio that speaks to your needs comes in. An example? An example? Precious' bio that shows off his skills as a freelance content strategist and writer.
- It states that Precious is for hire, causing interested prospects to contact him.
- It includes his website, where prospects can learn more about him.
- People can connect with Precious on social media to learn more about his work.
4. Rebecca Bollwitt : Writer
Bio platform: instagram.
Instagram is a notoriously difficult platform on which to write a good bio. Similar to Twitter, you don't have room for a professional bio that includes everything about you.
And because Instagram is primarily a mobile app, many viewers read about you passively on their mobile devices.
Instagram's limited bio space requires you to highlight just your most important qualities. Blogging icon Rebecca Bollwitt does just this in her own Instagram bio excellently.
Rebecca's brand name is Miss604, and she cleverly uses emojis in her Instagram bio to tell visitors what makes her a valuable content creator. See the screenshot below:
The rest of her bio follows suit, breaking up the text with an appropriate emoji and a perfect collection of nouns to tell me who she is as a person.
She even links out to her husband's Instagram account after the heart emoji (an adorable addition) and assures her followers that all of her pictures are authentically hers.
Take a lesson from Miss604 and show your personal side. Branding yourself as a professional shouldn’t involve discarding many things that make you human . Often, your most personal attributes make for the best professional bio content.

- Rebecca highlights her most important qualities in a few words.
5. Megan Gilmore : Cookbook Author
Bio platform: instagram.
Megan Gilmore is a best-selling cookbook author. She often posts healthy recipes on her Instagram page and inspires her followers to learn not to sacrifice taste for the sake of health.
You can glean most of this information immediately from her Instagram bio, which is short and to the point: "Gluten-free recipes and meal plans."
Gilmore further includes a CTA link within her Instagram bio that leads followers to free, ready-to-use recipes. You might think, " Why would she do that since it discourages people from buying her book?"
But that couldn't be further from the truth.
By giving her followers the chance to try out her recipes, she's slowly turning leads into customers. After I tried a few of her Instagram recipes and loved them, I bought her book, knowing I'd like more of what she offered.
- The bio is short and direct.
- The CTA link includes an invitation for people to join her newsletter. Meaning, she can build her email list.
6. Bea Dixon : Feminine Care Founder
Bea Dixon, Founder and CEO of The Honey Pot Company, efficiently uses the space on her Instagram profile to highlight who she is as a well-rounded human — not just a businesswoman.
For instance, while she highlights her girl boss attitude with a tiara emoji, she equally calls attention to her fashion interests (Free People), her pets, Boss and Sadie, and her love for ramen noodles.
- It shows who Bea is outside work.
- It includes a CTA that lets people check out everything Bea offers.
7. Tammy Hembrow : Instagram Influencer
Tammy Hembrow is a founder, fitness model, Instagram Influencer, and entrepreneur. These are a lot to fit into one Instagram profile. And this is where a summary of what you do and where people can find you take center stage.
If you wear many hats like Tammy, be sure to mention your biggest traffic driver in your Instagram profile and include a link to all you do.
- It shows Tammy’s core channel besides Instagram — YouTube.
- It includes a CTA that lets people learn more about what Tammy does.
- It links out to other pages owned by Tammy.
8. Dr. Cody : Chiropractor
Dr. Cody is a Sydney-based chiropractor. Like Tammy, Dr. Cody brilliantly uses the limited space on his Instagram profile to convey vital info to his audience.
Adding his TikTok account with almost three million followers is another excellent move.
- No one gets three million followers by doing a poor job. By including 2.9M+ TikTok followers in his bio, Dr. Cody instantly proves his expertise to his audience.
- Including his TikTok handle is a subtle pitch for people to follow his account on TikTok.
- The CTA link is great for those who want to learn more about Dr. Cody’s offers.
9. Larry Kim : Founder
Bio platform: twitter.
Forget about words for a moment. Looking at Larry’s bio, you immediately know what he prioritizes above all else — his family.
This could endear people to him. And don’t forget the inclusion of “Christian” — this instantly shows what he stands for.
- It shows what Larry takes seriously besides work — his family and his faith.
- The popular publications give people a reason to follow Larry.
10. Dharmesh Shah : Founder and CTO
Dharmesh Shah is the co-founder and CTO of HubSpot. Dharmesh’s bio is exciting because it has social proof, gives people a reason to follow him, and shows what people can expect.
- It shows what followers can expect.
- Dharmesh’s warm smile is welcoming, and his personal mission is inviting.
- It calls attention to Dharmesh’s business — HubSpot.
11. Lily Ugbaja : Content Strategist
Look no further than Lily's if you want inspiration for a Twitter bio packed with social proof.

Details matter, especially when there’s a cap on the number of words you can use to express yourself.

Ian doesn't take his bio too seriously but uses every character to highlight everything about him.
He includes his skill as a marketer and podcast host, who he is outside work as a dad, and what he can help you do. His smiles also give the bio a sense of humor and realness.

- It includes a CTA to check out Ian’s podcast.
- It shows Ian’s fun personality, an important trait for podcast hosts.
13. Van Jones : Political Commentator, Author, and Lawyer
Someone known for various talents and skills may find it difficult to capture who they are in a professional bio. The feat is nearly impossible when limited to just over 100 characters on Twitter.
But Van Jones effortlessly explains who he is and why it matters to everyone who visits his Twitter profile.
He starts his professional bio with a token of personalization and prioritization of his values. By mentioning that he is a dad first, we recognize what’s important to him in his long list of successes.
As we’ve seen in other bios, sharing who we are outside of work makes us more personable and should find its way into your bio, if possible.

You don’t need to be a skilled writer to create an effective professional bio. Most business bios, even most of the best examples, follow a certain formula. The following can serve as a template for writing your own professional bio:
(NAME) is a (JOB TITLE) at (COMPANY NAME), where (NAME) (VERB – include an action verb that describes what you do) (NOUN – include a noun that describes what you produce) for the past (NUMBER) years, including (TASK1), (TASK2) and (TASK3).
(NAME) has (ACCOMPLISHMENT1) and (ACCOMPLISHMENT2), among other industry distinctions. (NAME) can help you meet your target goals in the (INDUSTRY TYPE) industry. (NAME) currently resides in (PLACE), where (s)he enjoys (HOBBY) and (INTEREST).
Short Bio Examples
Many platforms require professionals to list short bios, falling below a set number of characters. Other professionals opt for a shorter bio in order to most efficiently describe themselves to readers. The following short bio examples will help when writing your own brief professional synopsis.

Bio Platform: Company website
Professional bios are an important component of a company website. Who represents your organization? In her business bio for Columbia University, anthropology professor Audra Simpson clearly communicates her professional biography and research interests.
9. Corey Wainwright
It’s possible to capture readers’ attention and describe a professional career in just a couple of sentences. In her short business bio for Hubspot, blogger Corey Wainwright tells audiences the two most important things to know about her, covering personal interests and career accomplishments in just a few words.
10. Megan Gilmore
When you only have a few characters to compose your professional bio, it’s important to make every word count. Cookbook author Megan Gilmore effectively describes her career in just a few short words on her Instagram profile. She helps communicate ideas using emojis and strategically directs readers to her website, where they can learn more details.
11. Ann Handley
Author and professional content marketer Ann Handley knows how to make a statement. Her professional bio, listed on her professional website, uses bold and colorful text to capture readers’ attention. Website visitors quickly can grasp her accomplishments and her personal interests.
12. Sarah Haskins
Bio Platform: Twitter
Sarah Haskins ‘ Twitter profile boasts one of the shortest and sweetest business bios found on any platform. In just five words the writer lets users know who she is and what she does. You can’t get much clearer than that.
Longer Bio Examples
There are plenty of reasons to write short bios, but some situations call for greater detail. If a platform provides enough space, a longer business bio can include information about professional philosophy, personal life and professional accomplishments.
The following longer bio examples demonstrate how a busienss profile can tell a greater story than simply writing resumes.
13. Mark Levy
Consultant Mark Levy lists his own bio twice on his company website, each version highlighting different aspects of his own business and his person. In the first entry, Levy lists his credentials in just a few short paragraphs. The second business bio on Levy’s website tells a more detailed and engaging story of the small business owner’s career, and it even employs elements of humor.
14. Wonbo Woo
You might expect a unique personal brand and professional bio from a content producer, and WIRED’s Wonbo Woo doesn’t disappoint. He includes a longer bio on his personal website. In it, he tells the story of his impressive career, and he doesn’t fail to drop plenty of names of the celebrities with whom he’s worked.
Creative Business Bio Examples
An effective business bio doesn’t have to come from a template. In fact, if you’re a skilled at creative writing, you can grab a reader’s attention and impress potential clients with a creative business bio on your company page or various social media platforms. The following creative business bio examples can serve as a guide.
15. DJ Nexus
An effective bio can come in a variety of forms. On his website, DJ Nexus dedicates an entire page to the story of his career. The New England-based DJ doesn’t just list professional details, however, he also provides enough personal information to tell readers who he is.
16. Pei Jung Ho
You might expect a unique and creative professional bio from an artist, and Pei Jung Ho definitely meets that expectation. The professional designer doesn’t simply boast a website with some accomplishments and job description. Ho’s personal website opens with an animated statement in colorful and bold lettering, before transitioning to a more traditional short bio and an engaging photo of the artist.
17. Nancy Twine
Briogeo Hair Care founder Nancy Twine ‘s professional bio immediately grabs hold readers’ attention with her signature and photo, before telling Twine’s story. The entrepreneur’s business bio doesn’t end there. It also highlights a quote from Twine, which illustrates her professional philosophy, and it even features video content.
18. Trinity Mouzon
Entrepreneur Trinity Mouzon ‘s professional bio tells far more about her than her job title and primary responsibilities. Mouzon makes a strong personal statement in the first sentence of her bio, which she presents in first person, telling her own story. In just a couple of paragraphs, Mouzon captures her professional essence and offers unique insight into her success.
19. Alex Bishop
In his professional bio, guitar maker Alex Bishop exudes the passion he has for his craft. Beneath an artistic and engaging video, Bishop includes a business bio that speaks to his intended audience and provides more than mere professional experience. Bishop’s story make’s potential clients trust his passion for guitars, as well as his brand name and small business.
Author Bio Examples
Authors have been impressing their readers with professional bios centuries before anyone heard of the World Wide Web. Today, it’s not uncommon for authors to have websites and social media profiles promoting their works, complete with creative business bios that might or might not mirror the bios printed in their books.
20. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ‘s personal website speaks to her target audience with a traditional business bio. In it, Adichie tells the story of her background, including her childhood in Nigeria and her educational journey. Her bio then goes on to describe her work and specific accomplishments.
21. Michael Siemsen
Bio Platform: Amazon
A common place to find online author’s bios is on Amazon, where a writer’s business bio can be found on pages featuring their books for sale from the eCommerce giant. In his professional author’s bio on Amazon, Michael Siemsen details his interests, accomplishments and popular works in a few brief sentences.
What are the essential components of professional bios?
While an effective professional bio is often more creative than a traditional resume, you can write a short bio using much of the same information, including work history, new skills and professional accomplishments.
The following are six essential elements of an effective business bio:
- Name and job title
- Educational background
- Work history
- Professional accomplishments
- Interests and hobbies
- Location or contact information
How do you make your bio interesting?
How do you make your professional bio more interesting? After all, no one is going to be impressed by yet another series of monotonous bullet points. You can add some extra pizzazz to your bio by including a more personal side, as well.
Want to make your bio interesting by including information not found on your resume? Be sure to include features such as your professional philosophy or a personal statement about your professional passions. Make your bio unique by highlighting who you are outside of the workplace, and don’t forget to tell potential clients and potential employers what you can offer their companies.
Should I write a bio in the third person?
A professional bio can be written in first person or in third person. Professional and more formal bios are often written in third person, while personal and more casual bios typically use first person.
It’s vital, however, that the chosen tense is consistent throughout the bio. For example, if the bio starts off in third person, referencing the subject by name and using pronouns such as “he,” “she” and “they,” then it’s important to continue using third person throughout the entire entry.
If, however, you start your bio by referencing yourself as, “I,” or using first person, then that should remain consistent, as well.

Having business role models is an important part of entrepreneurship. Business role models inspire you to do and be better. They show you that success is achievable, no matter if you’re from the Upper East Side or a tiny rural town. Looking up to business role models pushes you to dream bigger and achieve more.
Although when speaking of inspiring entrepreneurs who are great business role models 90% of the time you’ll hear names like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Jack Ma and Jeff Bezos, the number of zeros on someone’s bank account doesn’t mean they’re a good role model. On the contrary, you can find your business role model in your mother, a local entrepreneur, or even in a person with no entrepreneurial background. 21 business role models who inspire entrepreneurs
You’ll notice this list is made of just as much female business role models as male ones. Sadly, for this to happen we had to make extra effort to get the names of the ladies found below.
Namely, more than 80 entrepreneurs were eager to share their business role models with us, and only 2 of them had named females that inspire them. In fact, the bigger portion of them didn’t care to look past the most famous billionaires on the planet (Elon Musk and his likes). What was surprising was that even women were dropping this type of names.
So we had to try again and look specifically for female role models in order to make this list in compliance with our stance for gender equality.
The reason we’re sharing this with you is to encourage you to seek inspiration in the secret powers women in business have just as much as you do in men. You’ll learn so many new business lessons , and find new aspects of business to be passionate about and lead you ahead.
My business role model is Alan Mulally. From writing this piece about him a few years ago, I have been lucky enough to start up a relationship with him as he read it a few months ago.
I have had the chance to ask him my question which is, “ Why don’t more people run companies like him and other highly successful leaders ?” since the things they focus on are almost exactly the same. His answer was that it is hard. You have to be a loving human but also hold people accountable to the standard that was set.

But nonetheless, Gordon is an entrepreneurial rockstar and has amassed a fortune from his restaurants, TV work and books! I think the thing that inspires me most about his journey is his tenacity and ability to adapt in the face of adversity. He was on a path to become an elite footballer, but after suffering injury, made a change into cooking, and is now one of the world’s most formidable chefs.
He spent hours upon hours, often working late into the early hours of the morning practising his cooking techniques so he could become the best. I admire this work ethic so much, and it inspires me to push through my recent Type 1 diabetes diagnosis aged 33 and continue with business to make it work (despite recent world events).
If I could ask him one question, it would be “How do you motivate yourself to work the long hours, and maintain the quality and enthusiasm that you do?”

My female business crush is Marie Forleo. I love her for her creativity, vulnerability and her ability to write copy! Marie has taught me the value and skill of being yourself. She dances at the drop of a dime and doesn’t care who’s watching. I, myself, also like to shake a leg on the dance floor. The way she has been able to grow her business, offerings and followers has been magical. She also gives away a ton of valuable content for free. And every episode of Marie TV is a burst of energy.
I would ask her, “How did you find your Niche? What one thing were you judged for that turned out to be your Super Power? What was one thing that they told you not to do , that was just what needed to be done? Would your 6 year old little girl be proud of who you became?”

When I graduated I didn’t get a job and started my own business. I had read all his books and audio programs and one of the things that stuck with me was that you don’t get rich buying shares, you get rich selling shares. What he meant by that was build a business and sell the shares.
20 years after that seminar and one of my businesses is about to IPO on the Australian Stock Exchange. I stopped my operational capacity at that business 2 years ago also taking his advice to use your business to buy property. I am now flipping houses and building a rental portfolio to create passive intergenerational wealth.
I actually did meet him again 2 years ago at the New Orleans Investment Conference. I didn’t ask him a question, I just thanked him for everything he had done for me.

Rachel Hollis is my favorite business role model because of how raw and real she is. We’ve never met, but I feel like I know her and that she cheers me on my journey.
She’s taught me to stay true to my authentic self. She reminds us just how capable we are on reaching our goals. She’s taught me that it’s okay to be vulnerable on your entrepreneurial journey.
Rachel has a tattoo on her wrist that says “mogul”. Her story has reminded me that we all have to start somewhere. She’s struggled and has had her own setbacks, yet she’s still succeeding. She owns her own company, is a best-selling author, and hosts conferences on tour. She’s a huge inspiration to women all over the world.
If I could ask Rachel a question, I’d ask her how she attains a healthy work life balance? She has four kids, multiple businesses, and constant press and media tours. As someone whose business is growing, I’d like to obtain a healthy work-life balance myself. How does she get it all done?
Also, I’d ask her what my “word” should be for my wrist tattoo. Ha!

If I ever met Evan, I would ask him what his process is for analysing new ideas that his employees bring him . I can imagine that every day he is bombarded with suggestions and proposals for new revenue channels and modifications to their current operations. How does he analyse such proposals and make a decision? I’d love to know his process, and whether he acts more off of instinct or is data-driven.

Thinking of business role models the first person that pops to my mind is Joanna Gaines. The only thing matching her warmly polished interior design skills, is her entrepreneurial mind. Her immense love about everything she does makes it look like it’s not business, but just her way of living. And while partially that’s true, there’s no doubt she knows how to monetize her passions. Be it interior design, book writing, real estate etc.
Her mellow temperament and loving personality have taught me that you don’t have to be unscrupulous to succeed in business and in life. On top of that, she showed me that you can have a family and be present in their lives while also having several ventures under your belt.
If I ever meet her I’d probably lose my cool and my ability to think and ask her some stupid question, and later regret it.

They never worried over customers they felt were trying to pull one over on them. I specifically remember a day when a customer came up to the counter and complained that the machine did not dry their clothes. It was maybe the equivalent of $1.25. My mom apologized for the inconvenience and gave the customer their money. After they left, I noticed the customer taking their clothes out of the dryer and it looked dry – it didn’t have that wrinkle look you get when clothes are finished in the wash.
I asked my mom why she just gave up the money when it was clear they were lying. She said something that stuck with me till this day. She said that for us it was the equivalent of running the machine for a few minutes. For that person, it was the difference in maybe having clean clothes for the first time in weeks. That if they were asking for that money back, maybe they really needed it. It’s made me more empathetic running my business these days.

Mellody Hobson is my business role model. She doesn’t seek the spotlight but has a magnetic personality and passion that captures everyone around her. She comes from a very humble working class (and Midwest) background like myself. I’ve loved watching her rise up and break so many stereotypes.
I’ve had the chance to present to her recently but didn’t have a “real” conversation. If I had that opportunity, I would love to dig into how she is raising her 7 year-old daughter in light of all of the opportunities more accessible to females and minorities. Also, I’d like to ask about times she was ready to give up whatever she was she was doing. I believe knowing the hardships one encounters (not always public) and the way they overcome shows such true character.

If I had the chance to meet him, I’d ask him what he thinks is the most important characteristic or skill for success in business . And whether he believes business people/entrepreneurs are born or made .

Even before I became an editor, I am fond of reading a lot of books and news made by famous people. One of my great inspirations as an editor is Arianna Huffington, the founder of one of my favorite sites, The Huffpost.
She was my great influence because by reading all her contents and books, I was inspired to build up my own career. Aside from being a founder, she was also an editor, columnist, author and a businesswoman and I just can’t imagine how she had struggled all these roles together all at once.
If ever I will have a chance to meet her, I will thank her for being an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs and writers like me. I will also take this opportunity to ask her for advice and tips on how to handle all the challenges with grace, and how to keep on hoping despite the setbacks one has to face in building her own business.

My business role model is Richard Branson for obvious reasons. Business should be fun. It should be about creating something that doesn’t exist by bringing together people of various backgrounds to grow and progress with the idea itself. It can be a beautiful thing and after reading Richard Branson’s autobiography for the 4th time, it’s clear this is how he approaches life and business.
Whether it’s circumnavigating the globe in a hot air balloon or breaking the US to England crossing boating record, the man knows how to have some fun. When I make decisions or even go back to the basics of why we do what we do to begin with, I recall his experiences to remind me that business is a creative process that should be filled with the love and cooperation of a multitude of talented individuals.
If I have the chance to meet them, I’d probably inquire about societal problems he thinks are the most important and how he’s going about solving them . I’d also ask what he believes to be the point of life . A bit more in the clouds but an important question nonetheless.

My current business role model is Chelsea Clarke, a female business owner and the founder of Her Paper Route. This year alone, she’s on track to bring in nearly $500,000 (in a pandemic!) with her blogging businesses.
But my reasons for looking up to her go a little beyond just the income generated. She’s truly a visionary in the blogging industry, and her approach to growing her own platform, as well as other blogs that she then sells, has helped me understand that every website is a valuable piece of online real estate. And just like fixer-uppers, you can turn a dead blog into a profitable one!
She’s a true inspiration for me and has pushed me to think bigger when it comes to my own online business. If I would get a chance to meet her, I would ask her: “ What is the one non-negotiable task that you do every single day that has greatly impacted your business growth for good? ”

The two primary levers of a company's business model are pricing and costs. A company can raise prices, and it can find inventory at reduced costs. Both actions increase gross profit. Many analysts consider gross profit to be more important in evaluating a business plan. A good gross profit suggests a sound business plan. If expenses are out of control, the management team could be at fault, and the problems are correctable. Types of Business Models

A manufacturer is responsible for sourcing raw materials and producing finished products by leveraging internal labor, machinery, and equipment. A manufacturer may make custom goods or highly replicated, mass produced products. A manufacturer can also sell goods to distributors, retailers, or directly to customers.
Example: Ford Motor Company
Instead of selling products, fee-for-service business models are centered around labor and providing services. A fee-for-service business model may charge by an hourly rate or a fixed cost for a specific agreement. Fee-for-service companies are often specialized, offering insight that may not be common knowledge or may require specific training.
Example: DLA Piper LLP
Subscription-based business models strive to attract clients in the hopes of luring them into long-time, loyal patrons. This is done by offering a product that requires ongoing payment, usually in return for a fixed duration of benefit. Though largely offered by digital companies for access to software, subscription business models are also popular for physical goods such as monthly reoccurring agriculture/produce subscription box deliveries.
Freemium business models attract customers by introducing them to basic, limited-scope products. Then, with the client using their service, the company attempts to convert them to a more premium, advance product that requires payment. Although a customer may theoretically stay on freemium forever, a company tries to show the benefit of what becoming an upgraded member can hold.
Example: LinkedIn/LinkedIn Premium
Some companies can reside within multiple business model types at the same time for the same product. For example, Spotify (a subscription-based model) also offers free version and a premium version.
If a company is concerned about the cost of attracting a single customer, it may attempt to bundle products to sell multiple goods to a single client. Bundling capitalizes on existing customers by attempting to sell them different products. This can be incentivized by offering pricing discounts for buying multiple products.
Marketplaces are somewhat straight-forward: in exchange for hosting a platform for business to be conducted, the marketplace receives compensation. Although transactions could occur without a marketplace, this business models attempts to make transacting easier, safer, and faster.
Affiliate business models are based on marketing and the broad reach of a specific entity or person's platform. Companies pay an entity to promote a good, and that entity often receives compensation in exchange for their promotion. That compensation may be a fixed payment, a percentage of sales derived from their promotion, or both.
Example: social media influencers such as Lele Pons, Zach King, or Chiara Ferragni.
Aptly named after the product that invented the model, this business model aims to sell a durable product below cost to then generate high-margin sales of a disposable component of that product. Also referred to as the "razor and blade model", razor blade companies may give away expensive blade handles with the premise that consumers need to continually buy razor blades in the long run.
Example: HP (printers and ink)
"Tying" is an illegal razor blade model strategy that requires the purchase of an unrelated good prior to being able to buy a different (and often required) good. For example, imagine Gillette released a line of lotion and required all customers to buy three bottles before they were allowed to purchase disposable razor blades.
Reverse Razor Blade
Instead of relying on high-margin companion products, a reverse razor blade business model tries to sell a high-margin product upfront. Then, to use the product, low or free companion products are provided. This model aims to promote that upfront sale, as further use of the product is not highly profitable.
Example: Apple (iPhones + applications)
The franchise business model leverages existing business plans to expand and reproduce a company at a different location. Often food, hardware, or fitness companies, franchisers work with incoming franchisees to finance the business, promote the new location, and oversee operations. In return, the franchisor receives a percentage of earnings from the franchisee.
Example: Domino's Pizza
Instead of charging a fixed fee, some companies may implement a pay-as-you-go business model where the amount charged depends on how much of the product or service was used. The company may charge a fixed fee for offering the service in addition to an amount that changes each month based on what was consumed.
Example: Utility companies
A brokerage business model connects buyers and sellers without directly selling a good themselves. Brokerage companies often receive a percentage of the amount paid when a deal is finalized. Most common in real estate, brokers are also prominent in construction/development or freight.
There is no "one size fits all" when making a business model. Different professionals may suggest taking different steps when creating a business and planning your business model. Here are some broad steps one can take to create their plan:
- Identify your audience. Most business model plans will start with either defining the problem or identifying your audience and target market . A strong business model will understand who you are trying to target so you can craft your product, messaging, and approach to connecting with that audience.
- Define the problem. In addition to understanding your audience, you must know what problem you are trying to solve. A hardware company sells products for home repairs. A restaurant feeds the community. Without a problem or a need, your business may struggle to find its footing if there isn't a demand for your services or products.
- Understand your offerings. With your audience and problem in mind, consider what you are able to offer. What products are you interested in selling, and how does your expertise match that product? In this stage of the business model, the product is tweaked to adapt to what the market needs and what you're able to provide.
- Document your needs. With your product selected, consider the hurdles your company will face. This includes product-specific challenges as well as operational difficulties. Make sure to document each of these needs to assess whether you are ready to launch in the future.
- Find key partners. Most businesses will leverage other partners in driving company success. For example, a wedding planner may forge relationships with venues, caterers, florists, and tailors to enhance their offering. For manufacturers, consider who will provide your materials and how critical your relationship with that provider will be.
- Set monetization solutions. Until now, we haven't talked about how your company will make money. A business model isn't complete until it identifies how it will make money. This includes selecting the strategy or strategies above in determining your business model type. This might have been a type you had in mind but after reviewing your clients needs, a different type might now make more sense.
- Test your model. When your full plan is in place, perform test surveys or soft launches. Ask how people would feel paying your prices for your services. Offer discounts to new customers in exchange for reviews and feedback. You can always adjust your business model, but you should always consider leveraging direct feedback from the market when doing so.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, consider what competing companies are doing and how you can position yourself in the market. You may be able to easily spot gaps in the business model of others.
Criticism of Business Models
Joan Magretta, the former editor of the Harvard Business Review, suggests there are two critical factors in sizing up business models. When business models don't work, she states, it's because the story doesn't make sense and/or the numbers just don't add up to profits. The airline industry is a good place to look to find a business model that stopped making sense. It includes companies that have suffered heavy losses and even bankruptcy .
For years, major carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, and Continental built their businesses around a hub-and-spoke structure , in which all flights were routed through a handful of major airports. By ensuring that most seats were filled most of the time, the business model produced big profits.
However, a competing business model arose that made the strength of the major carriers a burden. Carriers like Southwest and JetBlue shuttled planes between smaller airports at a lower cost. They avoided some of the operational inefficiencies of the hub-and-spoke model while forcing labor costs down. That allowed them to cut prices, increasing demand for short flights between cities.
As these newer competitors drew more customers away, the old carriers were left to support their large, extended networks with fewer passengers. The problem became even worse when traffic fell sharply following the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 . To fill seats, these airlines had to offer more discounts at even deeper levels. The hub-and-spoke business model no longer made sense.
Example of Business Models
Consider the vast portfolio of Microsoft. Over the past several decades, the company has expanded its product line across digital services, software, gaming, and more. Various business models, all within Microsoft, include but are not limited to:
- Productivity and Business Processes: Microsoft offers subscriptions to Office products and LinkedIn. These subscriptions may be based off product usage (i.e. the amount of data being uploaded to SharePoint).
- Intelligent Cloud: Microsoft offers server products and cloud services for a subscription. This also provide services and consulting.
- More Personal Computing: Microsoft sells physically manufactured products such as Surface, PC components, and Xbox hardware. Residual Xbox sales include content, services, subscriptions, royalties, and advertising revenue.

We love a good list. Lists are a good way to organize ideas or thoughts in an easier way for readers to grasp. While it’s an unusual method in writing professional bios, it’s probably more unusual than this example from Karen Abbate uses numbers instead of bullet points.
In her list, she presents six important and notable things about her professional and personal details. She uses a confident and professional tone, just enough not to sound boastful. She starts by mentioning impressive brands she’s worked with and discusses her love for everything on the web.
The bio also details her educational background, work experience, and passions. She also shares a personal backstory and relates it to her work. All in all, it is an innovative bio.

1. Use fancy Instagram bio fonts
Technically, you can only use one “font” in your Instagram bio. But there are tools out there that will help you create the look of a custom font by mapping your text to existing special characters.
Here’s an example of what Hootsuite writer Christine’s bio looks like in a few different fonts, as created using the tool Instagram Fonts .
That third one is a little bonkers, but you could pick and choose a few words to incorporate strategically for visual appeal. In general, it’s a good idea to use this trick sparingly, for emphasis, rather than dressing your entire bio up in fancy fonts.
Once you find a font style you like, just copy and paste it into your Instagram bio.
2. Use Instagram bio symbols
We’ve already talked about using emojis. But you can also go old-school and use special text symbols to break ★ up ★ your ★ bio. (Remember Wingdings and Webdings? How very 1990s.)

If your primary social media is on a different platform and you consider Instagram a necessary evil, that’s okay — you can use your bio as a way to direct other users to that platform.
Comedian Ziwe Fumudoh rarely posts on Instagram, but is very active on TikTok, so she uses her bio to steer audiences towards that app.
Lush, weirdly, “departed” from social media but still has an active Instagram and uses their link in bio to explain why they’re not online.
8. Use line breaks
People don’t tend to read information online. Instead, they scan for bite-sized chunks of information.

On mobile, your best bet is to create your bio with the spacing you want using a notes app. Then, copy and paste it into your Instagram bio field. Or, use one of the Instagram bio templates below.
9. Share your pronouns
If you want to, it’s great to share your pronouns on Instagram. Since the option was first added in May 2021 , it’s become customary on the app to add your pronouns to your bio, whether you’re cisgender, transgender or nonbinary. Displaying your pronouns means your followers will know how to properly address you, and normalizing the practice helps make everyone feels more comfortable on the platform.
10. Use Hashtags
Hashtags in your Instagram bio are clickable links. Keep in mind, though, that Instagram bios do not appear in hashtag search results. Adding Instagram hashtags to your bio won’t make it more discoverable.
