You Can Win Summary (PDF)
In this summary, I will give you all the lessons I’ve learned from ‘You Can Win’ by Shiv Khera.
Without further ado, let’s dive right in.
Key Lesson #1: Build Your Attitude Right

“Attitude” is one of those words that keeps popping up repeatedly.
Yes, it’s that important. Most successful people get their attitude right before they become successful.
Your attitude is determined by how you think and behave.
It will help if you keep the right attitude while facing any circumstance.
Often the people you surround yourself with affect your attitude.
That’s why you should protect your mind from harmful influences.
The author suggests that you spend time with total quality people (TQP) who have goals and ambitions.
This way, you’ll learn valuable things like good character and values from them.
Also, it’d add substance to your character.
In Attitude Is Everything, Jeff Keller discussed a similar thing.
He explained how one could alter his life by changing his attitude.
Your attitude serves as a foundation. And by having a solid foundation, you make sure that other things fall in the right place.
Can a building with a weak foundation survive turbulence from an earthquake?
The same is with us.
How come a person with the wrong attitude could survive the problems in life?
Attitude also affects your outlook on life.
For instance, when subjected to the same problem, two people might react differently depending on how they see the problem.
This is how attitude determines the level of success a person would achieve in his life.
Suggested Reading: Attitude Is Everything Summary
Key Lesson #2: Understand The Factors That Affect Your Attitude
Various factors affect your attitude, but the main factors are:
- Environment.
The environment could be taken care of by surrounding yourself with TQP. (Discussed already.)
Experience is gained over time. By building a community with TQP, you’ll enrich your experience.
Education also determines your attitude to a large extent. For example, if you read many self-help books, your worldview would differ from an average person’s.
Building the right attitude is like building the proper foundation of a house. So make sure that you aren’t messing this up.
Insight : There are plenty of book summaries and articles on this website (like the one you’re reading). Read them all to enrich yourself with valuable insights, which will further help you set the right attitude.
Key Lesson #3: Don’t Fake It

Heard the advice, “Fake it till you make it.”?
This is one of the worst pieces of advice ever. Why? Because you can’t fake anything for a long time. You can’t pretend every time by putting on a fake personality.
The only way to improve your personality is to add substance to it.
For instance, if you wish to have a charming personality, then work for it.
You won’t become charming by faking. Do exercise, read books, do exciting things, work with amazing people…
Knowing this would help you in developing and maintaining the right mindset.
You can’t build a proper attitude by thinking only, and worst — pretending.
Key Lesson #4: Choose a positive attitude over the negative one
Positive Or Negative: Which Type Of Attitude Is The Best?
You always have a choice. So it’s up to you what attitude you choose.
According to the author, you should stick with a positive attitude.
A positive attitude helps you stay more productive, reduces stress, encourages you to be a problem solver, and improves the quality of your life.
And conversely, a negative attitude do you more harm than good and often leads you to resentment.
Key Lesson #5: Embrace The Change

Why do you think most people stick to a negative attitude despite knowing that it’s harmful to them?
That’s because their natural tendency is to resist change.
No one wants to change. Because ‘change’ often requires you to leave your comfort zone and do things you’ve never done before.
As discussed already, not adapting to the change causes more problems.
So embrace the change. Set your attitude right. Solve your problems for good. F*ck the negative attitude.
At least develop a desire to change your attitude and make it right.
Stop blaming others for your problems!
The choice is yours, whether you want to keep blaming the world or change your life for good with the right attitude and action.
Key Lesson #6: Have The “Do It Now” Attitude

These three words, if followed, could change your whole life.
Most people live with the “Do it later” attitude rather than the “Do it now” attitude.
Procrastination is a significant problem these days.
The author says that your energy drains faster than usual when you procrastinate. You should do things without wasting your time. That way, you’ll feel more energized with a sense of achievement.
But people with negative attitudes barely get above the point. They keep procrastinating. And as a result, they regret it later.
Just do it. Don’t procrastinate and delay your success!
Key Lesson #7: “Utilize Your Present To The Fullest”
There is no point in blaming. (I hope you got the last point.)
The thing is: For better or worse, you are here now on this planet to survive.
You’ve got to do your best at any moment or utilize your time to its fullest. This is what people with a positive attitude do.
They live in the present moment and do what they can do in the best possible way.
Living in the present doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve to ignore the past and future altogether. That’s not even possible, considering the big memory bank you have in your head.
The idea is to use your time in the best possible way. And to do that, you’ll have to plan, of course. Often people fail to get this idea right.
Note : You’ll need to stop procrastinating to apply this learning.
Key Lesson #8: Education Is More Than You Think
If you’re reading this summary, you probably know what real education is.
There is a lot of fuss about academic qualifications and degrees when people talk about education.
Especially, things like character building and teachings related to morals and ethics are entirely ignored or underestimated compared to technical knowledge.
Is the education system following the right approach? Why are there walking failures in our society who don’t understand moral values and lack humanity?
That’s because education today focuses on filling the information in our brains.
Most so-called educated people are like living encyclopedias who can’t even handle their sh*t. (Sorry for the slang!)
Here is what the author says about education:
“True education is training of both the head and the heart.” Shiv Khera
Only by working on both head and heart do you become educated for real.
Real education comes through real-life experiences. An educated person is competent enough to use his skills in the right circumstances.
Even if you’re a post-graduate on a topic, it doesn’t matter unless you know how to put that knowledge to use.
Remember that:
“Knowledge is only potential power.” Unknown
How do you know if you’re educated?
I bet the author isn’t entirely against acquiring academic qualifications.
The point is:
Instead of deluding yourself by reading a few books and calling it a day, ask critical questions to yourself. Here are a few questions you could try:
- Am I able to apply the things I’ve learned?
- Do I understand the concept properly?
- What value did I get from my academic course?
- Am I able to understand the human side of the studied concept?
My advice : Don’t limit yourself to books. Look what’s happening in the real world. Learn how to put your knowledge to use. And make this world a better place.
Key Lesson #9: Never Underestimate The Power Of Common Sense

Education is nothing without common sense.
Often people believe that common sense is an ordinary thing. But the author says that common sense in abundance is actually wisdom.
You don’t need fancy degrees or qualifications to call yourself wise. Wisdom comes automatically when common sense is applied and accumulated in life.
Common sense gives you the ability to think and differentiate between good and evil. So use it every time you make a decision.
In fact, not using this extreme power would lead you to failure. You’ll regret not using common sense when you needed to.
Many people lose their credentials, become victims to hackers, and lose their money.
If only those people start using common sense and avoid downloading malicious files to their laptops or PCs, they will prevent such tragedies.
What’s more, academic education doesn’t teach you to use common sense.
Takeaway : Avoid being ignorant. Learn to apply common sense in every aspect of your life.

Let’s begin with the You Can Win Summary to understand in more detail:
Chapter 1: building a positive attitude.
In this chapter author shares a story of a man who sells different colored balloons at a fair; whenever his business used to go down, to tackle that situation, he used to fly one balloon in the air so that when children see that balloon in the air, they feel like buying it. With this technique, his sales again used to go up. One day, a boy came near him while selling his balloon. He asked, “IF YOU RELEASE A BLACK BALLOON, WOULD THAT ALSO FLY.” That boy’s concern moved that balloon seller, and for this, that man replied With empathy, ”SON, IT IS NOT THE COLOR OF THE BALLOON; IT IS WHAT IS INSIDE THAT MAKES IT GO UP.”
With this story author want us to know that this man saying applies to our lives as well. It is what is inside that counts. The author says that the thing inside us that makes us go up is our attitude. Have you ever wondered why some people, organizations, businesses, or countries are more successful? The reason for this is straightforward. People become successful because they think and act that is thinking effectively.
The author says that one day when he asked two executives if they had a magic wand, what would they ask from that wand? Will they ask for profit or a huge success, or for what? After listening to the answer from those executives, he was very impressed. The answer was that people should have a better attitude. They will ask for a better attitude because it can make a person excellent and successful.
The author says that people’s attitude contributes to success. As per a study done by Harvard University, they say 85 percent of people get a job because of their attitude, and only 15 percent of people get a job because they are clever or intelligent.

Chapter 2: Acres of Diamonds
In this chapter, the author shared a story related to the farmer. The author says a farmer in Africa was happy and content. He was happy because he was content, and he was content because he was happy. One day a wise man came to that farmer and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along with them. The wise man said that if he had a diamond size of his thumb, he would get his city, and if he had a diamond size of a fist, he could buy his own country; listening to this, that farmer wasn’t able to sleep the whole night. He became discontent, because of this discontent behavior, he was unhappy.
The next day, immediately after waking up, that farmer left his family, sold his entire farm, and moved out in search of diamonds. After searching the whole of Africa, he didn’t find anything, and when he returned to his home place, he was financially destroyed and lost his real happiness. He started feeling unhappy and lost, so finally, he committed suicide.
The person who bought the first farmer’s farm was watering the camels at a stream, and when he was working on that land, he found some shining stones. He took that stone and kept it at his home. When the wise man came to meet the first farmer, he saw that stone.
That wise man asked the new owner if the earlier farmer had returned. This new owner replies no, but why are you asking this?
For this, that wise man says I can see the diamond which I had asked him to search for, for this new owner says no, it’s not a diamond, but an ordinary shining stone and my entire farm, which I have bought from the earlier farmer is filled with such shining stone . w
When that farmer took that wise man to his farm, he told him that these were diamonds not stone. After analyzing that farm properly, they learned that it was covered with acres and acres of diamonds.
After sharing this story author ask us to find 5 morals of this story
So let’s discuss the morals as per the author

Building a positive attitude
We all know about helium balloons despite any color it will go up when released. because it is not the color of the balloon, it is what is inside that makes it go up.
The same thing applies to our lives. It is what is inside that counts. The thing inside of us that makes us go up is our attitude
STEPS TO BUILDING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
• Become aware of the principles that build a positive attitude
• Desire to be positive
• Cultivate the discipline and dedication to practice those principles.
Self-Esteem
Self-Esteem is an individual subject evaluation of their own worth
- Self-Esteem is Our Self-Concept.
Human beings cannot perform beyond the boundaries of their self-concept, whatever it may be.
ADVANTAGES OF HIGH SELF-ESTEEM
- Builds strong conviction.
- Creates willingness to accept responsibility.
- Builds optimistic attitudes.
- Leads to better relationships and fulfilling lives.
- Makes a person self-motivated and ambitious.
Why are goals important?
A man was traveling and stopped at an intersection. He asked an elderly man, "Where does this road take me?" The elderly person asked, "Where do you want to go?" The man replied, "I don't know." The elderly person said, "Then take any road. What difference does it make?"
Definition of goal
- Goals are dreams with a deadline and an action plan. Goals can be worthy or unworthy. It is passion, not wishing, that turns dreams into reality.
Steps to turn a dream into reality:
1. Have a definite, clear goal written.
2. Have a plan to accomplish it.
3. Read the first two twice a day.

Work Ethics
1. The quality of work shows the quality of worker.
2. A work done half hearted does not result in half output but zero output.

To laugh often and love much;
To win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children;
To earn the approval of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To give of one’s self without the slightest thought of return;
To have accomplish a task, whether a healthy child, a rescued soul, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To have played and laughed with Enthusiasm and sung with exaltation;
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.
IF YOU THINK
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t!
If you like to win, but think you can’t
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost;
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are,
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger and faster man,
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.
Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at something worth doing.

“You Can Win” A Step Towards Success | Book Review
You can win by shiv khera | book rview.
“You can win” is a great book by author Shiv Khera an Indian writer. Here we will give review of the book. It is recommended to read the book review before you buy the book. Posted by: Blurbgeek
In simple words success is:
“Accomplishment of aims and desired vision OR getting some social status , gained fame or becoming PROSPEROUS”
Some people thought that success is the other name of destination they thought what you dreamed if u achieve you became successful but this is the definition of success only for those who want to became a moneybag
According to my ideology ” success is a journey not a destination. It is the journey of your determination. it is the journey of your will power. It is the journey of your self-belief , in short success is the journey of your dream until it realize into reality.
The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire more precisely burning desire. Success doesn’t mean the absence of failure in fact failure gives you an opportunity to learn, it works as a flame for your burning desire as Shiv khera rightly quoted,
” Success is 90% failure” Shiv Khera | Writer of “You Can Win”

Right Attitude of Success | ” You Can Win Book”
The book ” you can win” by Shiv khera gives you a right attitude towards success ,this book changed my life I learned the real meaning of success from it, it gives you a guidance towards your goal in other words It provides you a first step towards dream/ goal. The most impressive thing in this book is that it cover all the ingredients of success. The key words of book ” You can Win” are:
- Importance of attitude
- Self-esteem
- Interpersonal skills
- Subconscious mind and habits
- Goal setting
- Values and vision
All those not only the key words of the book but also an outlook on the life of successful personalities all over the world. Read the complete book review to understand all of them. If you go through the life of the successful personalities like,
- Michael Angelo
- Richard Branson
- Andrew Carnegie
You will find all these ingredients in the recipe of their success. As khera said,
” Winners do not do different things ; they do things differently” Shiv Khera | Writer of “You Can Win”
This quote is the central point of the book it means that success doesn’t mean to apply new strategies or do something new in-fact it matters the way we do, it matters how we real with things. Choose a strategy but apply it in a different way in your own purely your own way. Do not copy others.
It is just like, Introducing a new dish within the same time and with truly the same ingredients providing to all the competitors in a competition. To be a winner, first you should accept your self that what you are, with what you have and where you are. You must have full confidence on your abilities, you must thirst for learning, you must have curiosity to discover things you must have boarder vision on life.
A Story Worth Mentioning
I would like to share my favorite story in the book review of ” you can win”, * you must have thirst for learning*
An eagle’s egg was placed in the nest of prairie chicken. The egg hatched and a little eagle grew up thinking it was a prairie chicken. The eagle did what the prairie chicken did. It scratched in the dirt of seeds.it clucked and cackled. It never flew more then a few feet because that it what the prairie chicken did. One day he saw an eagle flying gracefully and majestically in the open sky. He asked the prairie chicken ” what is that beautiful bird”??
The chicken replied,
” That is an eagle. He is an outstanding bird, but you can’t fly like him because you are just a prairie chicken” so the eagle never gave it a second thought, believing that to be true. He lived the life of and died a prairie chicken depriving himself of his heritage just because of lack of vision.
What a waste!! He was born to win but was conditioned to lose. The same thing is true for most people the unfortunate part of life Oliver Wandall Holmes said,
” most people go to their graves, with music still in them” . Oliver Wandall Holmes
Key Rules of Success | ”You Can Win Book”
We didn’t achieve excellent because we have lack of vision. If you want to be successful we must experience the failure to enjoy the gravy of success you have to bear the warmth of failure. It you want to fly gracefully like an eagle you have to learn the ways of eagle. The Writer mentioned some action steps to be a winner those are,
- Be a good finder
- Make a habit of Doing it now
- Develop an attitude of gratitude
- Get into a continuous education program
- Build positive self-esteem
- Stay away from negative influence
- Learn to like the things that need to be done
- Start your day with positive
These key rules are simple enough to change our attitude towards our routine. To become a winner is not a difficult thing the all you have to be done is to create a positive attitude in your life.. we have to start learn from the nature duck keep paddling restlessly underneath but appears smooth and calm on top.. this is the secret of success. Keep on working calmly unless you succeed,
I would like to share Another story from the book in review that will make you realize many opportunities are lost just because of indecision,
Once someone asked a farmer if he had planted wheat for the season?? The farmer replied “No, I was afraid it wouldn’t rain”. Then the man asked ” Did you planted corn”??The farmer replied ” I was afraid of insects eating one corn”. Then the man asked ” what did you plant”?? The farmer said ,” nothing, I played it safe”.
Moral is that, we lost many opportunities because of our foolishness. We have to take opportunity, we have to take the risk if we want to succeed , we have to plough or saw the seed of we want to enjoy the delicious fruit. The road of success is always under construction of your determination.
Some Quotes From ”You Can Win Book”
Some motivational quotes from the book “You can win” that will shake your consciousness are,
“An uneducated thief may steal good things from the train, but an educated one may steal the entire train. We need to compete for knowledge and wisdom not for grades”
”Motivation is like fire, unless you Keep adding fuel to it, it dies. Your fuel is your belief in your inner values”
“Success doesn’t mean an absence of problem, it is overcoming problems”
” success is not measured how high we go up in life, but how many times we bounce back when we fall down”
” The greatest gift the human have is the ability to think”
People choose to ignore the spirit and derive the meaning that is convenient to them Such people have tied this phrase to selfishness and I am sure that was not intent. The always forgot that we don’t live in isolation what you do effects me and what I do effects you we are connected. We have to realize we are sharing this planet we must learn to behave responsibly. There are two kinds of people in this world taker and givers takers eat well givers sleep well. Givers have high esteem and positive attitude they serve society.
SOME WORDS ABOUT THE BOOK
This book “you can win” step by step tool for achievers was originally published in 1998.
This book is a basic step towards your success it is full to wisdom , life stories of successful personalities, example, experiences and it helps to dispel your confusion and clarify your attitude towards success. It creates a link between failure and success and gives you a compression between winners and losers.
You will be surprised to know that Losers in academic life became the most successful persons in their professional life. By just in believing on their will power and determination. I would again say that,
” Winner do not do different things, they do things differently”
SOME WORDS ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Shiv khera is an Indian author and a motivational speaker he is also an educator, business consultant and a successful entrepreneur. He is an author of 14 books but his international bestseller book is ” you can win,”
“You Can Win” has sold 3.5 million copies in 21 different languages. In the Book, a saying of Winston Churchill is quoted:
Success is not final ; failure is not fetal,it is the courage to continue that counts Winston Churchill
It explains the supreme quality of a winner success isn’t always greatness,it is about consistency. Any fact we are facing is not as important as our attitude towards it, for that determines our success or failure.
CENTRAL IDEA
The main idea of the book is that,
A winner is someone who accept a win or a loss with the same temperment. For him/ her it doesn’t matter he / she win or loss the thing that matter is what they learn from it or what behavior and strategy they adopt. A winner is Never alone in Winning a game, its rather the people who stand by her or make him a winner, its his devotion who make him winner.
Winner are those who came forward and embrace the failure in manly manner. It meany strategy and planning makes a man winner or champion everyone works hard but winners work strategically they prefer smart work they overcome their weaknesses they are compassionate and believe in “Do or Do not there is not to try”

Review of “You Can Win” book ends
I would like to complete this Review of Book ”You Can Win” with the words of Success,
“Behind every successful person there’s a lot of unsuccessful year, so every success is an admission ticket to a set of new decisions”.

Delta SkyMiles changes: Airline overhauls how you earn Medallion status in biggest change yet

If you're looking to earn status with Delta, listen up: There are big changes coming to the SkyMiles program — and they're not necessarily pretty.
Delta Air Lines is overhauling how you earn Medallion status as part of perhaps one of its biggest loyalty updates yet. The airline is retiring Medallion Qualifying Miles and Medallion Qualifying Segments, and it'll instead focus on a redefined version of Medallion Qualifying Dollars.
There's much more to unpack as part of the airline's announcement, which also includes some drastic changes to Sky Club access policies ( more on that in a separate story ).
Depending on your personal travel and spending habits, Delta's news may not necessarily sting that much, but there will certainly be some flyers who will miss the old program.
Here are all the details.
One status metric: MQD

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINTS GUY
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, Delta will consolidate all Medallion status earning activities into one metric called Medallion Qualification Dollars.
If you've been flying Delta for a while, you're probably familiar with MQDs — they've historically been equivalent to the spend requirement in order to earn status. MQDs were introduced in 2014 and joined MQMs and MQSs to create Medallion status thresholds.
When MQDs were first introduced, they were earned from spending on Delta flights (and as a function of distance and fare class on eligible partner tickets). The more you spend, the more MQDs you earn.
Going forward, MQDs won't just track your eligible travel spend on Delta and its partners — you'll also earn MQDs from a handful of other methods.
- Delta and partner flights: Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the ticket price for a Delta-marketed flight operated by Delta or by a partner airline. Flights booked and ticketed by eligible partners will earn MQDs at the same rate as they do today, based on the fare class purchased and distance flown.
- Credit cards: Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card members earn 1 MQD for every $10 spent. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card members earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent. There is no limit to how many MQDs you can earn from credit card spending.
- Car rentals: Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on completed car rentals booked through Delta direct channels.
- Hotel stays: Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on completed stays booked through Delta direct channels.
- Delta Vacations: Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the entire vacation experience in addition to what you earn for your flight when booking directly with Delta Vacations.
As you can see, beginning next year, earning MQDs should be easier than ever, especially if you book car rentals, hotels or vacation packages through Delta.
That said, there's (unfortunately) a pretty big devaluation coming to how you earn MQDs from cobranded credit card spending — one that's sure to rankle some long-time Medallions.
Previously, Delta granted MQD waivers for those who spent $25,000 on eligible cards up to Platinum Medallion status. (Waiving the Diamond Medallion MQD requirement took $250,000 in annual spending.)
Now, depending on which card you use, that $25,000 in spend would turn into either 1,250 or 2,500 MQDs — not even enough to put you halfway to entry-level Silver Medallion status.
If you're a big spender who used to hit the $250,000 MQD waiver, that spending will now translate into 12,500 or 25,000 MQDs, which, at most, still puts you 10,000 MQDs short of Diamond Medallion status.
For Delta, these changes make sense — the airline wants to build an ecosystem around SkyMiles that captures value from the entire end-to-end travel journey. This includes car rentals, hotels and vacation packages, not just flights. The more you spend in the ecosystem, the more you are rewarded.
In fact, that's exactly the strategy that Dwight James, senior vice president of customer engagement and loyalty, shared with TPG in an interview.
He said that over 50% more travelers are now engaging with Delta beyond flights as compared to 2017, and that number is expected to keep growing.
"It's an opportunity for us as we think about truly rewarding customers for total engagement," James said. "When you couple that with the fact that Delta is a top five U.S. e-commerce website, which tells you that there are so many different customers coming to delta.com to conduct business with us, that again compliments that line of thinking that so many customers are coming to us."
While spending has long mattered on the quest for Medallion status, Delta is leaning into a new model of what it means to be loyal to the carrier.
In fact, while Delta has usually been a trailblazer in the airline industry, this announcement sees the airline playing catch up with one of its big rivals.
American Airlines broke from the long-time industry practice of awarding status based on flown miles (and spending) when it debuted Loyalty Points last year as the sole status metric that tracks your spending across flights, hotels, shopping portals, credit cards and much more.
Delta is largely following in American's footsteps here with the consolidation of status-earning activities into a single metric that's based on how much you spend on the entire travel journey.
That said, Delta's updated MQD metrics still feel very much like version 1.0 compared to American's Loyalty Points, which can be earned from many more activities than MQDs.
Hopefully, Delta will expand the eligible activities that earn MQDs in the coming years as it iterates on the new program.
Status thresholds soar through the sky

Not only is Delta changing how you earn status, but it's also raising the thresholds needed to achieve Medallion elite status — and these updates aren't pretty.
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, you'll need to earn the following number of MQDs to enjoy Medallion status for 2025. (You earn MQDs each year between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, and your status is then valid through Jan. 31, two years after the qualifying period.)
Across the board, these thresholds are some of the highest of any U.S. airline, especially for top-tier Diamond status, which will soon require a whopping 35,000 MQDs a year.
But what likely stings even more is that this is the second year in a row in which Delta is raising the status thresholds. Last year, the carrier implemented a 33% increase for all tiers except Silver Medallion. For reference, here are the elite requirements for 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Crunching the numbers shows that status requirements are increasing by 75% for Diamond Medallion members, by 50% for Platinum and Gold Medallion members and by 100% for Silver Medallion members year over year. Relative to 2023, these increases are even more extreme — coming in at a whopping 133% for Diamond Medallion status.
Delta has long said that "if everyone is special, no one feels special." With these updated requirements, there are no two ways about it: The airline is working to rebalance the elite ranks, and it'll likely have no issues doing that with these new sky-high thresholds.
"There will be movement within the tiers," James said. "What that number looks like, we're not going to necessarily forecast that. But what we're excited about is that we think this is gonna be a win."
Transition plan
These are major changes for Delta flyers, so the airline has built a transition plan as it phases out MQMs and MQSs.
One of the signature Medallion perks is the annual rollover benefit that lets you start each year with an MQM boost equivalent to how many MQMs you earned above last year's status thresholds.
The rollover MQM benefit is being phased out next year, so those members with rollover MQMs earned during 2023 will receive a one-time choice that'll convert your MQMs into redeemable miles, MQDs or a combination of both.
Rollover existing MQMs will convert into redeemable miles at a rate of 2:1, or you can convert those MQMs to MQDs at a rate of 20:1.
You don't need to choose one or the other. You can convert rollover MQMs to both MQDs and redeemable miles in the below segments:
- 100% redeemable miles, 0% MQDs
- 75% redeemable miles, 25% MQDs
- 50% redeemable miles, 50% MQDs
- 25% redeemable miles, 75% MQDs
- 0% redeemable miles, 100% MQDs
This conversion will begin at the start of the Medallion year on Feb.1, 2024, via Delta.com.
Million Miler status

Delta has long been the only major U.S. airline to award Million Miler status based on how many MQMs you earn in your lifetime. (American and United calculate lifetime status earnings based on "butt-in-seat" miles flown.)
Now that Delta is retiring MQMs, it's also overhauling how you earn Million Miler status. Starting on Jan. 1, 2024, Million Miler earnings will be based on how many miles you actually fly with Delta and its partners — no more bonuses for more expensive fares or higher fare classes.
All existing Million Miler balances will convert 1:1 into the new miles flown metric.
We don't often see airlines tweaking their Million Miler requirements. After all, there's nothing like investing years of loyalty into a certain airline only to have the goal posts changed in the fourth quarter.
For those who are inching closer to a Million Miler threshold, Delta's move may feel like a bait-and-switch.
It's not all bad news, though. The airline is sweetening the perks for Million Miler status. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, the upgrade priority is changing.
Million Miler status is moving into the third position, behind Medallion Status and fare class. This is a notable update that's sure to help some long-time Delta flyers beat newer travelers to the coveted seats at the pointy end of the plane.
New Choice Benefits
This news isn't exclusively negative. That's partially because Delta will be debuting a handful of new Choice Benefits , which are awarded to Platinum and Diamond Medallions after earning status.
Though the airline isn't ready to disclose the new benefit choices, James provided some insight into what's to come.
"We have a few Choice Benefits that will either be enhancing or adding. So we'll have something that's new, and then we'll also have enhancements as well."
Pressed for a timeline, James noted that the airline will "announce those either later this year or at the very beginning of the new year."
What's coming is anyone's guess, but hopefully, the airline is considering sweetening the deal to make top-tier status more attractive than ever before.
Bottom line
There's a ton to digest in Delta's SkyMiles update, and that's before even thinking about the changes the airline is making to accessing the Sky Club.
Across the board, earning status is getting much harder. The airline is raising the Medallion thresholds by as much as 100%, and it's also changing the metric needed to hit the new goal posts.
Unfortunately, there aren't many winners in Delta's latest updates. I'd definitely expect many existing Medallions to drop to lower status tiers, and some may even ditch Delta completely.
Those who stick it out with the Atlanta-based carrier should have an easier time actually enjoying the benefits of status (with less competition from other members), but with first-class recliners and Comfort+ seats selling to paying travelers, this announcement begs the question: Is elite status even worth it anymore?

India vs Sri Lanka: 2023 Asia Cup cricket final – as it happened
All the updates as India crushed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets to win their eighth Asia Cup crown in Colombo.

This blog is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates from the Asia Cup final between India and Sri Lanka on September 17, 2023.
- India beat cohosts Sri Lanka by 10 wickets to win the 2023 Asia Cup at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
- Sri Lanka were bowled all-out for just 50 runs, as India’s Mohammed Siraj claimed a career-best 6-21 – including four wickets in one over.
- India, who have won the Asia Cup a record seven times, welcomed back five-star players who were rested for Friday’s dead rubber loss to Bangladesh.
It’s a wrap
India become eight-time champions of the Asia Cup with this triumphant effort against a sub-par Sri Lanka.
With this win, they also finally end their five-year drought of failing to win a multi-team tournament.
And with the World Cup looming on the horizon, they will hope today’s performance will position them for a deep run in the tournament, with an eye on the final on November 19.
Sri Lanka will be disappointed in how they approached the first innings and will surely undergo a deep inquest over the next few weeks as they make their preparations.
Thank you for keeping us company today, and do make sure to join us again when we begin our World Cup coverage on October 5.
And for even more detail on what transpired today, check out our match report here.

An unenviable record
50 – Sri Lanka’s score of 50 in #AsiaCup2023 final is their lowest tally against India in a men’s ODI and their second lowest score in the format overall; it’s also the lowest score by any team in the final of any multi-team tournament (3+ teams) in men’s ODIs. ‘To get bowled out the way we did was disappointing’
A dejected Chris Silverwood, the Sri Lankan coach, shares his thoughts on the match: “It has been a below par performance. To get bowled out the way we did was very disappointing. There is a lot of reflection to be done.”
“Today we came up against a very high-class bowling attack. The Indian bowlers held a good line and length, and bowled good pace, but I think we also made our life difficult [as well],” he said.
“We have seen some of our bowlers shine. Sadeera has come through with some good performances [with the bat]. It is unfortunate we can’t back up any of the performances [today].”
“We have to sleep on this and make some decisions in the morning. I am sure there will be lots of questions asked once the emotions have calmed down.”
That sorry, dejected face of Chris Silverwood 🙁 #SLvIND #IndvSL #AsiaCup — Tito Sebastian (@tito281) September 17, 2023
Sri Lanka fans didn’t get a chance to see many fireworks from their batters but have stuck back to see the Colombo sky light up in celebration.

India win by 10 wickets
With a steer towards mid-off, Kishan seals a 10-wicket victory for India!
Sri Lanka needed just over 15 overs to scrape to 50 all out, but India only need just over six overs to see off the target.
It has been an absolutely comprehensive win by the Indians, who were unbelievable with ball and bat today.
Sri Lanka will rue a golden opportunity to win at home, and will look back on their decision at the toss and their initial tactics.
6 overs. India 50-0
The spinner does well, giving up just one in the over before overpitching the final ball.
Gill indulges with a crisp drive through the covers to level the scores.
5 overs. India 45-0
Pathirana makes the double mistake of overpitching and going wide, which allows Kishan to steer the ball through the backward point region for four.
The over ends with another clipped boundary, this time by Gill, through square leg as India are within a six of winning this final.
4 overs. India 34-0
Wellalage, who had a five-for against India in their Super 4 encounter, is brought on much earlier than he would have expected.
With the situation becoming rather desperate for Sri Lanka, they have turned to arguably their most effective bowler this tournament.
He does well enough to keep India to just two runs.

3 overs. India 32-0
Madushan offers width on a half-volley length ball outside off, and Gill is in too good form to miss out as he drives superbly through cover for four.
He brings in the line next ball, but Gill times the ball through the same region again to make it back-to-back boundaries.
He goes short next ball and it is three fours on the trot as Gill swivels onto the back foot, pulling the ball to the midwicket boundary.
India are accelerating to the target, and need just 19 more to win the 2023 Asia Cup title.

2 overs. India 17-0
Pathirana is handed the ball on the other end.
India earn a couple thanks to an overthrow after a failed attempt to runout Kishan at the non-striker’s end.
The pacer goes short with his third ball, but Kishan spots it early as he opens the face to glide the ball over the slip to the third man boundary.
He follows it up with a short and wide delivery which Kishan scythes away behind point for four.
1 over. India 7-0
Madushan overpitches his third ball, which Kishan drives through the mid-on region for three runs.
He makes the mistake of straying on the pads of Gill off his final ball, who obliges with a well-timed glance through midwicket for a boundary.
India’s response couldn’t have started any better.
Players back on the field
The Sri Lankan players make their way out, followed closely after by the Indian opening batsmen.
Kishan has been promoted to open in place of Rohit, with Gill partnering on the other end.
Perhaps this is a sign that India will come out guns blazing to try and chase down the target in quick time.
Madushan has been handed the ball to start the proceedings.
‘I believe in our bowling’
Sri Lanka fans say their team’s abysmal innings has left them clueless but they are still staying behind to see if their spinners can work their magic.
“I believe in our bowling,” Jeevan Mathews said during the innings break.
“I know Siraj bowled well but there must be something in the pitch to help the bowlers and our team should make use of it.”
Siraj on another level
“Ok Google, play Mohd Siraj” “Sorry, Mohd Siraj is unplayable!” #INDvSL #AsiaCupFinals pic.twitter.com/rJIBGnQYf3 — Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) September 17, 2023
‘Feels like a dream’
A joyous Siraj shares his thoughts on his first-innings performance: “Feels like a dream. Last time I did the same against Sri Lanka at Trivandrum where I got four wickets early, but couldn’t get the five-for.”
“I realise you get what’s in your destiny, so I did not try too much today. I have always looked for swing in white-ball cricket,” he said.
“I did not find much [swing] in the previous games, but today it was swinging, and I got more wickets with the outswinger.”
7⃣-1⃣-2⃣1⃣-6⃣ It was a SPELL! 🪄 The many moods of a captivating Mohd. Siraj bowling display! 👏 👏 #TeamIndia | #AsiaCup2023 | #INDvSL | @mdsirajofficial pic.twitter.com/1yCj5LxSsy — BCCI (@BCCI) September 17, 2023
A shortened break
We’ll have a shortened innings break, of 30 minutes, as India wrapped things up in a hurry.
Play will resume at 5.39pm local time, in about 20 minutes from now.
Sri Lanka 50 all out
On the back of Siraj’s 6 for 21, Sri Lanka have been bowled out for an unfathomable score of 50.
The bowlers were in top form today, and made use of overcast conditions to make the ball dance to their tune.
The top and middle order failed to show the aptitude required to play out the overs and try to compile a more challenging total for the visitors.
The Sri Lankan bowlers will hope they too can extract the same kind of malice off the pitch, but it will be a tall order to restrain this power-packed Indian batting lineup.
We will be back shortly for India’s innings.

The crowd can’t be silenced
It will take a lot more than a disastrous batting performance by their team to silence the Sri Lankan crowd.
They are still able to find it within themselves to sing and dance at a packed stadium.
Sri Lanka 50 all out. Pathirana out!
The number 11 doesn’t hang around too long as he slices a chance to Kishan at point to bowl Sri Lanka out for just 50 runs in the Asia Cup final!
This is Sri Lanka’s lowest ODI total against India.
Sri Lanka 50-9. Madushan out!
Pandya replaces Siraj and strikes first ball as Madushan edges behind to Kohli at first slip to make it nine down!

15 overs. Sri Lanka 50-8
The spinner finds a miserly line and length right away as Sri Lanka pick up just the one run off his over.
Will be interesting to see if Rohit persists with Siraj at his end, or elects to give him a much-deserved breather?

14 overs. Sri Lanka 49-8
Siraj continues from his end, bowling his seventh over on the trot.
An overthrow from Kohli allows four extra runs for Sri Lanka, which mean everything when you consider the current situation.
In the end, Sri Lanka add nine useful runs to their tally.
Looks like we will have our first introduction of spin as Yadav replaces Pandya.
13 overs. Sri Lanka 40-8
The new batsman is Madushan as Sri Lanka are unable to add to their score further, with Pandya earning a maiden.
The last ball catches Madushan off guard as the batsman expected the shortish length to climb, but instead crashes into his helmet as he ducked into the ball.
Sri Lanka 40-8. Wellalage out!
A well-bowled bouncer from Pandya surprises Wellalage as he top-edges an easy chance to Rahul behind.
India are just two wickets away from bowling out Sri Lanka for a low score.
12 overs. Sri Lanka 39-7
Hemantha shows no nerves after arriving on the scene.
He clips a full-ish length delivery off the pads through midwicket for four.
Sri Lanka end up adding six runs in the over as they look to survive.
Sri Lanka 33-7. Mendis out!
Make it six for Siraj as he claims the all-important wicket of Mendis!
The quick delivers a fuller length ball outside off which just nips in enough, as Mendis looked to play on the up.
It ends a valiant vigil from Mendis, who heads back with 17 to his name.
The new batsman, Hemantha, makes his way out.

11 overs. Sri Lanka 33-6
The vice-captain finds his line and length right away.
He raps the pads of Wellalage off the fifth ball, but it looks like the impact was outside the off stump as Pandya went up for the appeal.
Wellalage ends up picking up a couple of runs off the last ball after a rather awkward pull shot through square leg.
10 overs. Sri Lanka 31-6
Siraj finds the outside edge off the fourth ball, but the chance dies well before it got to Kohli at first slip.
It was Mendis on strike too, which would have been a handy wicket for the Indians.
In the end, just one run comes off the over.
We will have our first bowling change as Pandya replaces Bumrah.
9 overs. Sri Lanka 30-6
Bumrah afford a pair of runs off his first ball before dropping one short and wide which Mendis attacks instinctively with an uppercut over backward point for four.
He then earns a fortuitous boundary through the third man region after edging a length ball outside off which goes wide of the second slip.
In the end 12 come off the over, which proves quite the coup for the Sri Lankans.
The lowest target successfully defended in an Asia Cup final (in ODI format) is 180-4.
It came at the 1988 edition of the tournament in Bangladesh, where Sri Lanka were dismissed for 176 in their pursuit of the Indian total.
8 overs. Sri Lanka 18-6
Siraj sustains the pressure from his end as he tries to go across the left-handed Wellalage with back-of-a-length deliveries.
The ball continues to wobble troublingly, so the batsmen will need to get stuck in here to try and bat out the overs as best as they can.
7 overs. Sri Lanka 17-6
Bumrah errs in line with his second ball as Wellalage is able to clip the leg-side delivery through midwicket for three useful runs.
Another run is earned via a leg bye as Sri Lanka look to stabilise a sinking ship.
A family of cricket buffs
The Rathnayakes are a family of cricket buffs and two all-round cricketers.
Oniru, seven, and his younger brother Daniru are left-hand batters and right-arm fast bowlers. They are also passionate fans of Sri Lanka’s opening batter Pathum Nissanka.
“He’s from our school,” Oniru says proudly.
Their father, Manidu, says he is keen on bringing his boys to the stadium whenever Sri Lanka plays an international match.
“The thrill of watching a match live cannot be matched at home and if they are to play for Sri Lanka one day, they should be exposed to the excitement of packed stadiums,” he said.

Sri Lanka 12-6. Shanaka out!
Siraj gets his five-wicket haul with a lovely delivery on middle which just straightens enough to beat the defences of the Sri Lankan captain!
It has been a procession of batsmen going in and out of the pavilion, with Mendis, who came in at one-down, wondering if his time will be up soon as well.
The Sri Lankan fans are in complete silence as Wellalage makes his way to the middle.
The over ends with just one run coming of it.

5 overs. Sri Lanka 12-5
The Sri Lankan captain, Shanaka, is the new batsman after the de Silva wicket.
It is Mendis, however, who is facing the music, this time from Bumrah as he continues from his end.
He survives the maiden over as India have the hosts on the ropes here in Colombo.
Sri Lanka 12-5. De Silva out!
This has to be one of the most bizarre starts to a final you will ever see as new batter, de Silva, edges a chance to Rahul behind!
Siraj picks up his fourth from the over as Sri Lanka have lost half of their squad in just four overs.
It will take a monumental effort from here if they are to put up a challenging total in what is proving to be testing conditions.

Sri Lanka 8-4. Asalanka out!
Siraj is on a hat-trick as new batter, Asalanka, offers a chance to Kishan at cover, with the fielder making no mistake!
The home crowd are absolutely stunned by the events out in the middle.
Shanaka will be potentially ruing his decision of electing to bat based on current circumstances.

Sri Lanka 8-3. Sadeera out!
Siraj is on fire as he raps Sadeera on the pads, with the umpire straightaway raising the finger!
It looks absolutely plumb, but the Sri Lankan batter decides to review it.
The decision is soon confirmed, and he heads back to the pavilion with The Lions absolutely reeling.

Sri Lanka 8-2. Nissanka out!
Nissanka obliges by slicing a low chance to Jadeja at backward point to give India the perfect start they were seeking!
With that dismissal, Sadeera makes his way to the middle.

3 overs. Sri Lanka 8-1
Bumrah continues to probe the channel outside off stump, with just one run taken from the over.
India must be pleased with the start they have had so far, and if they can pick up another wicket, it would put serious pressure on the Sri Lankans.
2 overs. Sri Lanka 7-1
Siraj begins in marvellous fashion with a maiden over to sustain the pressure on the Sri Lankan batsmen.
He attacks on a fourth/fifth stump line, with the ball nibbling in and out to create just the right amount of doubt in Mendis’s head.
1 over. Sri Lanka 7-1
Mendis doesn’t take too long to get going as Bumrah’s attempted yorker turns into a low full toss for the wicketkeeper to pounce on as he drives to the left-off mid-off for four.
The batsmen scrape a few more runs to get seven on the board after the first over.
Siraj is handed the ball for the next over.
Sri Lanka 1-1. Perera out!
It is the perfect start from Bumrah as he strikes with his third delivery!
After swinging the ball both ways in the first two deliveries, he manages to catch Perera out with an outswinger across the left-hander which just gets the edge.
Kishan takes a low tumbling catch to his left as the visitors draw first blood.
The new batsman will be Kusal Mendis.

Players on the field
The Sri Lankan opening batsmen are out in the middle, with the Indian players following suit.
The noise levels have risen appreciably here at R Premadasa Stadium.
It will be interesting to see how India’s opening bowlers make use of the overcast conditions on offer.
India’s spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, will kick things off with the ball.
Play to start at 3:40pm local time
Good news all around as the umpires have given the go-ahead to resume the match, and with no overs reduced either.
‘Our fans have been amazing’
The crowd at the Premadasa Stadium is largely favouring Sri Lanka.
Local organising staff give an unofficial 80-20 estimate on the percentage of Sri Lankan to Indian numbers in the crowd.
They hung around long past midnight after the home team’s last-ball win over Pakistan on Thursday night and have returned with high expectations of their underdog team.
Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lanka captain, spoke of this support at his pre-match media conference yesterday.
“Our fans have been amazing and the way our team has performed, it has attracted more crowds to the stadium,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s cricketing crisis
The island nation’s cricket board has been strapped financially for years.
A lot of their fortune resides in hosting tournaments like the Asia Cup.

Inspection at 3:30pm local time
The latest update is we will have a ground inspection by the umpires in about 10 minutes time.
If conditions improve, then we can expect the match to start at 3:40pm local time (10:10 GMT).
Covers come off!
The passing showers have passed and we have some movement on the ground. Ground staff are removing the covers.
Stadium filling up
There aren’t many empty seats to be found inside the stadium but the crowd is still building up outside.
Queues that go around the stadium are moving slowly. A number of security checks later, fans are finally able to enter the stands.
Police officials along the way are confiscating handwritten placards or posters and only fans are being allowed inside.

India’s route to the final
India’s tournament started in a rather precarious manner.
The top order was annihilated by Pakistan’s pace triumvirate, before managing to recover on the back of a Kishan-Pandya fifth-wicket stand.
The rain eventually saved the day, with the match having to be abandoned.
India took care of business against Nepal before exacting revenge on Pakistan in the Super 4s with a staggering 228-run victory.
They managed to hold their nerve against a tricky Sri Lanka side before losing in a last-over thriller to Bangladesh, but by then, the Men in Blue had already secured their spot.

Captains with the trophy

Rain may delay proceedings
Dark clouds are hovering around the stadium and it’s just started to rain.
It looks like a passing shower but let’s wait and see what delay is in store.

Sri Lanka’s route to the final
The Lions took care of business against Bangladesh in their tournament opener before holding on to a narrow two-run victory over Afghanistan, which just allowed them to scrape into the Super 4s.
Sri Lanka triumphed over Bangladesh once more, before succumbing to a 41-run victory to India.
In arguably the match of the tournament so far, they played a virtual semifinal against Pakistan, with the game going to the very last ball, where the Sri Lankans held on to a two-wicket victory (DLS method).

Sri Lanka win toss and opt to bat
Sri Lanka have won the toss, electing to bat first.
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka had this to say: “Seems like a good wicket. Looks like there will be turn in the afternoon [as well]. We are fortunate this year to have a big crowd to support the team.”
“I am pleased with how the youngsters have performed so far [in this tournament]. The way they have played is a good boost for the World Cup as well,” he said.
India captain Rohit Sharma agrees with his counterpart: “We would have batted first. The last game we batted reasonably well to get close to the target [against Bangladesh].”
“It’s a good opportunity for us to come out aggressively with the ball and put pressure on them, and then see what we can do with the bat.”
A sunny day in Colombo
The sun is out in full force and fans in the unshaded parts of the stadium have brought out their umbrellas. Plenty of ice lollies and chilled juices everywhere.
The crowd waits patiently as we get close to the toss.

Business booms in Khettarama
Business is booming for Khettarama locals before the big match. Stalls selling an array of snacks and fan paraphernalia dot the street outside the stadium.
Locals, who may work elsewhere during the week, have set up temporary businesses to make full use of the opportunity.
The prices are not steep – face paint costs 100 rupees ($0.3) per person – and the options are aplenty.
Opportunities like these don’t come around often and the middle class neighbourhood is making the most of having international cricket fans in their midst.

What to expect ahead?

India looking to address drought
The Men in Blue, who were largely adjudged pre-tournament favourites, come into this match on the back of a multi-team championship trophy drought that has extended since 2018.
With the World Cup looming, they will want to ensure they gain a much-needed confidence boost.
But one can never rule out Sri Lanka at home.
They have already proven to be a handful for India after bundling them out for 213 in their Super 4 encounter, but ended up losing the match by 41 runs.
Whose day will it be? We shall find out shortly.

Stadium sold out
All tickets for the final are sold out. Word from the organisers is that the last remaining hospitality and grandstand tickets were snapped up last night.
“The public is advised not to arrive at ticket counters or the ground to purchase tickets,” they said in a statement earlier today.

Asia Cup bus has arrived
The Asia Cup bus is doing the rounds in the Sri Lankan capital.
The bright, open-top bus, decorated with the tournament’s livery, has large flags of both countries fluttering.
A Sri Lankan band is playing trademark papare tunes as it goes across the city.
It has now reached its destination, the R Premadasa Stadium, and is greeted with cheers from the Khettarama locals.

‘India is taking home the Asia Cup’
Former India captain MS Dhoni may have retired four years ago but his fan base is still going strong.
Alakshendra Singh, a longtime Dhoni admirer, has got the legend’s image tattooed on his arm.
“He is the greatest ever,” Singh says of India’s World Cup-winning captain.
“But today, I’m here to support Team India,” he adds.
Singh, from India’s capital New Delhi, arrived in Colombo in the morning and said he was not going back without the Asia Cup trophy.
“India is taking home the Asia Cup and Virat Kohli will be our biggest player today.”

Weather update for the final
It is a hot and humid afternoon in Colombo. There is a thick cloud cover over the stadium but no threat of rain yet.
Weather forecasts predict disruption around 5pm (11:30 GMT), but not a long one.

No India-Pakistan final. Again.
The Asia Cup, which began in 1984, has yet to see a final between India and Pakistan in its 15 iterations.
Organisers more than make up for it by ensuring both teams play each other as many times as possible, sometimes over two days, in order to keep the crowds and sponsors happy.
Speaking of crowds, it will not be surprising to find spot Pakistan shirts in the stands as some of their fans who spoke to Al Jazeera said they would stay for the final as they had already bought match tickets with the hope of seeing their team reach it.
India stars set to return
India come in to the match on the back of a loss against Bangladesh in Friday’s dead rubber.
They rested five of their star players and are expected to field a full-strength side today.
Sri Lanka will be riding the wave of confidence after a dramatic last-ball win over Pakistan in Thursday’s Super 4 match.

Sometimes you do things that make you feel ashamed. It was the first day of the Republican convention in 2012, and I had nothing to write about, so I wrote a humor column mocking the Romney family for being perfect in every way. It was a hit with readers, but the afternoon it was published, I crossed paths with two of Mitt Romney’s sons, and they looked at me with hurt in their eyes, which pierced me. I’d ridiculed people for the sin of being admirable.
A few years later, before he was a senator, Romney asked me to come out to Utah to give a talk to a group he was convening. It’s a pain to write a speech and get on a plane, but I did it in penance for my sins. Of course, all the Romneys were lovely to me, as is their nature. And I learned a lesson: The partisans may applaud if you ridicule those you admire, of any political stripe, but stay faithful to them.
We all struggle to be the best version of ourselves we can be, and Romney’s struggle is now taking him into retirement and out of the Senate. On the way he gave us a gift, in the form of a series of conversations with The Atlantic’s McKay Coppins, who has written a book on him, excerpted in the magazine.
Romney puts on the record what so many of us have been hearing for years off the record — that the Republican Party has become a party of fakers, that its congressional leaders laugh at Donald Trump contemptuously behind his back while swooning over him before the cameras.
Mitch McConnell is the tragic figure in Romney’s tale. He comes across as — and I believe actually is — a decent man who is trying to mitigate the worst of Trump’s effect on his party. But we see the daily corrosions that McConnell must endure to keep up this front — turning a blind eye to Trump’s crimes, turning a blind eye to the threats that were coming in the lead-up to Jan 6.
At one point, McConnell resorts to the rationalization we’ve heard a thousand times — that if Trump loses and the Democrats win, they will pass a hard-left agenda that will ruin America forever. McConnell has to exaggerate how radical Joe Biden is, and what the electorate will support, in order to justify supporting his own party’s lamentable leader.
McConnell’s core problem is that you can’t negotiate with narcissism. Every time you make a concession to Trump’s selfishness, it voraciously seeks to devour another pound of your flesh.
Paul Ryan also makes a sad appearance in this story. Romney tells Coppins that Ryan called him during the first impeachment trial, seemingly lobbying Romney to acquit. Preserve your viability with Republicans, Ryan advises; preserve your ability to do good.
It’s advice that once seemed plausible and that guided many upright people to enter the Trump administration as voices of sanity. The first problem with it is that the cult of Trumpism demands absolute fealty. One moment of honest dissent, and you are cast from the ranks. The second problem is that loyalty to Trump is ultimately enforced by the threat of violence. As the Coppins piece makes clear, there were Republicans who chose not to vote yes on impeachment or conviction because the outcome either way was inevitable and because they didn’t want potential assassins coming after them or their families. We have gone beyond the bounds of normal democratic governance.
The third problem is that if you ally yourself with a con artist, you have to become part of the con yourself. You have to become Ted Cruz, who went to Princeton and Harvard Law and is married to an employee of Goldman Sachs, ludicrously popping a brewski live on TV — an elite nerd’s attempt to appear populist.
Over the Trump years, we’ve learned how easy it is to anesthetize one’s moral circuits. John McCain kept his moral compass, and so did Romney, but they are the exceptions. Many others joined the general fakery. You start by lying about yourself, and pretty soon you’re lying to yourself.
The pivotal moment for Romney seems to have come on Jan. 6 — not what the insurrectionists did to get into the Capitol but what the Republican legislators did in the chambers after the rioters had been cleared out, continuing their efforts to negate the election. This is where five years of negotiating with narcissism had brought the party.
Romney’s retirement, which goes into effect in 2025, will mark the end of an era, the end of the Republican Party that once featured people like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and more recently George Romney, Mitt’s father, and George H.W. Bush. Realistically, Romney will have little role in trying to produce a better G.O.P. future. What replaces Trumpism will be different from what came before.
I admire him for deciding to step down at the senatorially young age of 76. As we’ve all come to see, the hunger for continued relevance is the corroding lust that devours the very old. Romney stands for the valuable idea that there are things more important in life than politics and winning elections.
The G.O.P. needed to change and become more in touch with the working class — but not in the vicious way Trump has championed. As long as Trump is leading it, the Republican Party cannot be reformed. It can only be deprived of power.

American teenager Coco Gauff fights back to beat Aryna Sabalenka and win U.S. Open

NEW YORK, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Teenager Coco Gauff mounted a fierce comeback to beat Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the U.S. Open women's final on Saturday, claiming her first Grand Slam title and cementing her place in American tennis royalty.
With the win, sixth seed Gauff became the first American to win a U.S. Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017.
Gauff, 19, fed off noisy local support as she fought back in the second set and kept the momentum going until the end of the battle, before falling to the court on Arthur Ashe Stadium as she clinched the title with a backhand winner.
Sabalenka had a superb start but could not keep the momentum going as unforced errors piled up and she closed her 2023 Grand Slam run, which included an Australian Open title and semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, on a disappointing note.
"It doesn't get more dramatic than that, to be honest," said Gauff, who lost in her only previous major final appearance last year at Roland Garros.
"I knew today was going to be one of those problem-solving tough matches because she's a tough opponent, so I'm obviously happy with the result."
There were early signs of nervousness from both players, as Gauff made a pair of unforced errors to help Sabalenka to a break in the opening game, and the Belarusian dropped serve in the fourth game with two double faults and an unforced error.
The crowd urged on Gauff, the first American teenager to reach the U.S. Open singles final since Serena Williams in 2001.
But Sabalenka blocked out the noise and used her mighty forehand to convert on a break point chance in the fifth game. The Belarusian was helped to another break in the seventh as Gauff double faulted and made two more costly forehand mistakes.
The 25-year-old Sabalenka, who will take over as world number one in the new rankings, had ended Gauff's run at Indian Wells earlier this year but told reporters this week she expected a “different player” in Saturday’s final.
She ended up facing just that in the second set, as the American showed new resolve when she fended off a pair of break points in the first game and flipped the script.
What was once a lopsided affair turned into a battle as Gauff increased her intensity, sending Sabalenka scrambling around the court in the fourth game before the Belarusian dropped her serve with a double fault.
Gauff produced an overhead smash to break in the opening game of the third set and converted another in the third game.
Sabalenka took a medical timeout after the fifth game, consulting a physio for an apparent issue with her left thigh, but did not appear worse off as she broke in the next game.
If Gauff was rattled, however, she did not show it, winning a 20-shot rally before breaking back in the seventh game and soaking up the adoration of the crowd at the major she grew up watching as she clinched the title.
After offering her opponent a hug, Gauff burst into tears and embraced her parents in the stands.
"The whole time I was saying to myself, 'Oh, my goodness, how is this real?'" she told reporters.
"When I sat down after hugging them back before the ceremony, it felt real in that moment, but when I was going to hug them it didn't. I almost forgot to shake the ref's hand. It was a crazy moment."
The tournament was celebrating 50 years of equal prize money at this year's edition, and pioneer Billie Jean King was on hand to offer Gauff the trophy.
Sabalenka had only dropped a single set en route to Saturday's finale and had tears in her eyes as she offered her opponent credit, chuckling as she said she wanted more finals against the American - but with "different results, hopefully."
She told reporters the tide had turned during the match as she began "overthinking" in the second set.
"Because of that I start kind of like losing my power," said Sabalenka "Then she start moving better. I start missing a lot of easy shots."
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
The win delivered on years of enormous expectations hoisted upon the young American Gauff's shoulders after she became the youngest ever to qualify for the Wimbledon main draw at 15 years old.
The breakthrough at such an early age came with its pitfalls.
"People were putting a lot of pressure on me to win. I felt that at 15 I had to win a slam at 15," said Gauff.
"I felt like I had a time limit on when I should win one, and if I won one after a certain age it wouldn't be an achievement.
"Yeah, it's just crazy the amount of things that I have heard or seen about myself, but I'm really happy of how I've been able to manage it all."
She found a new gear this summer, producing the best tennis of her career as she picked up a win in Washington and secured her first WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati, before embarking on a tremendous run through Flushing Meadows.
"A month ago I won a 500 title and people said I would stop at that. Two weeks ago I won a 1000 title and people were saying that was the biggest it was gonna get," said Gauff.
"So three weeks later I am here with this trophy right now... To those who thought they were putting water on my fire you were really adding gas to it and now I am burning so bright."
