Opening. Are you ready to make your first impression ? Because your letter opening is where you do that. That means you should probably spend most of your time getting this just right. Make it interesting, unexpected, use action words, and try to get the reader to want to read more.

Cover letter body. Just because the body of a cover letter takes up most of the space doesn’t mean it’s the hardest to write. In fact, it’s actually sort of easy. Many people find the body sort of writes itself as long as you follow the three customary paragraph suggestions.

First paragraph. Express some enthusiasm for the job at hand, and then dive right into what your qualifications are. The current trend is to do that in bullet points. They’re easier to read and can stand out more than a paragraph format.

Second paragraph. In this paragraph, you want to let the reader know why they want to hire you. This is a better approach than telling them why you want the job . If you do it this way, you’re selling them on your qualities.

Third paragraph. Sum up the letter, let them know you’re enclosing your resume, and offer to be available if they have questions or if they’d like to schedule an interview.

Closing. This requires basically no thought at all. We suggest sticking with the classics: “Sincerely,” “Best Regards,” or “Appreciatively.”

Signature. If you’re emailing your resume, then you only have to skip one line (return twice) and type your name. If you’re printing out a letter and mailing it, then you’ll need to skip three lines (return four times) and type your name. Then when you’ve printed it above your typed name, add your handwritten signature.

No matter which method you use, it’s a good idea to add your email address and your phone number at the bottom, under your typed name.

Attachment. Always include your resume with your cover letter if possible. Adding the word attachment to the bottom of the letter is a good idea because it lets the reader know there’s supplemental information.

To the editor: Kudos to Steve Lopez for his article regarding the driving tests at the DMV. I took the test last March to renew my driver’s license. I failed it and had to take it again six weeks later and passed. I am 93 three years old and have taken that test routinely since 1957, when I moved to California.

Why I should have to take it again I’ll never know. It seems so obvious to me that if a person my age is required to be tested, it should be with the behind-the-wheel driving test. The driving laws hardly ever change, but a driver’s ability to keep driving at an advanced age (less than 93, I might add) can be questionable.

To the editor: I have read Lopez since he began working for the Times. When he switched to writing about old people, I was upset and wrote to him asking him not to do it. I thought his columns would be really boring. I don’t know how old I was then, but I’m 91 now so I was old by his standards. I gave up reading him for a while and then drifted back. By the time he started writing about the DMV, I had gone through lots of those tests. Then in April my daughter had to take her first test. She discovered the eLearning on the DMV website and passed her test easily. Then she showed her dad earlier this month. He is 96 and that online test made life so much easier.

If Lopez had not started pointing out the horrors of the DMV tests, no changes would ever have been made. He made a loud noise for all of us and it made a difference. I think they should erect a statue of him in front of the Department of Motor Vehicles in Sacramento.

We are signing off now after a big week in Westminster that saw Labour making its first moves as the new government, and the Conservatives trying to work out what their future in opposition looks like.

Friday marks the end of the first full week for hundreds of new MPs who came to Westminster after the general election.

But for some of the newbies, there was an even bigger task coming their way - being promoted to ministers.

Our political reporter Alix Culbertson takes at look at the new Labour politicians who have already found themselves on Sir Keir Starmer's frontbench.

Jess Phillips says there are "still things that I worry about" after the government confirmed it would be letting prisoners out of jail early to help with overcrowding. 

The Labour MP and now minister in the Home Office tells Sky News' Electoral Dysfunction podcast that "by no means is any of this perfect" and the situation was a "terrible, terrible thing". 

She adds: "It's still not something that you would ever want to be doing. And there are still things that I worry about."

But Ms Phillips defends the decision too, especially around the exclusion of domestic abusers and stalkers from the policy, saying it is "a shift from what it was... when the Tories were doing it".

She says: "You do what you can in the initial hours that you have to do it, and that isn't the end.

"We will now work on exactly how to make sure that as many possible safeguards can be put in place for potential victims whose perpetrators are being released."

The victims' commissioner for England and Wales has welcomed the government's decision to exclude domestic abusers and stalkers from its new early release scheme for prisoners. 

Baroness Newlove called the move a "welcome and necessary step, reflecting the concerns raised by victims and those who advocate for them".

In a statement, she said there needs to be "clear communication with victims" during the process to ensure the government has their trust, including informing them if release dates are brought forward and allowing them to request protection measures. 

She demanded the probation service is "properly resourced to effectively manage licensing conditions and exclusion zones, which are vital for public safety and victim reassurance".

Baroness Newlove added: "Public safety must remain the top priority as these changes are implemented. 

"We must acknowledge these exclusions have limitations and cannot address every potential risk."

The chief inspector of prisons is warning the move by the government to tackle overcrowding in jails will "inevitably lead to the early release of some risky offenders". 

In a statement, Charlie Taylor welcomed the decision by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood to release prisoners who had completed 40% of their sentences to free up space, saying the "recognition of the seriousness of the situation, and swift action to manage the prison populations to relieve the immediate strain many jails are under" was positive. 

However, he added: "This latest measure will inevitably lead to the early release of some risky offenders, and will add to the workload of already stretched prison OMUs (offender management units) and probation services.

"How these men are prepared for release and how prisons and probation are supported in managing them will be vital."

Mr Taylor said his organisation will be "watching this very closely - as well as any plans that are developed once the immediate pressure is relieved that seek to make prisons places of genuine purpose, help people to break the cycle of reoffending and protect the public from future harm".

Former home secretary and likely Conservative leadership contender Suella Braverman has blasted the government in a somewhat odd way - namely for "picking up Tory ideas".

As we have just reported, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to release prisoners who have served 40% of their sentences to help alleviate overcrowding in jails, subject to some exemptions. 

A similar plan was said to have been proposed by the now former justice secretary Alex Chalk last year, but was understood to have been blocked by Number 10 over fears of a backbench rebellion from Tory MPs. 

Tweeting after the government announcement was made, Ms Braverman said: "I opposed this, both inside & outside government.

"With 40 MPs, I tabled amendments to the Sentencing Bill to stop the early release of criminals and put public safety first.

"We managed to stop the government doing it."

She added: "Labour is picking up Tory ideas and putting the public at risk."

Ms Braverman also claimed "everyone and his mother should run to be leader" of her party when the contest kicks off. 

But she said all contenders have "got to start taking responsibility for what we did, and for the things we shamefully left undone - such as not building enough prisons".

The justice secretary has announced that the government will conduct a review into how the "crisis" in prisons was "allowed to happen".

Shabana Mahmood explained: "It will look at how and why necessary decisions were not taken at critical moments. And the lessons that must be learned by future governments, from the failures of the last."

She added: "The legacy of those who last occupied 10 Downing Street is prisons in crisis, moments from catastrophic disaster.

"Our legacy will be different.

"A prisons system brought under control. A probation service that keeps the public safe. Enough prison places to meet our needs. And prisons that break the cycle of reoffending - and create better citizens, not better criminals."

The justice secretary has set out what would happen if the government does not implement these "emergency measures" to reduce the prison population.

Shabana Mahmood said: "Soon, the courts would grind to a halt, unable to hold trials.

"The police would have to stop carrying out arrests. With officers unable to act, criminals could do whatever they want, without consequence.

"We could see looters running amok, smashing in windows, robbing shops and setting neighbourhoods alight.

"In short, if we fail to act now, we face the collapse of the criminal justice system. And a total breakdown of law and order."

She declared this "the legacy of the last Conservative government" and the consequences of their "failure" to address the issue.

The new justice secretary has placed the blame for the "crisis" in prisons firmly at the door of the previous government.

Shabana Mahmood said of the Conservative Party: "Time and again, they ducked the difficult decisions that could have addressed this challenge.

"Instead, they kept the public in the dark about the state they had left this country in. They were too weak to heed the warning signs that were flashing. They chose instead to put the country at risk."

There have been reports that her predecessor, Alex Chalk, tried to implement the emergency measures she is announcing today in order to ease the crisis, but former PM Rishi Sunak blocked it.

"But, instead of taking responsibility, she said, "Rishi Sunak called an election. He tried to hoodwink the electorate. And he was punished at the ballot box."

Echoing language used to describe the people who appeased the Nazis in the 1930s, Ms Mahmood said: "Those responsible – Sunak and his gang in No 10 – should go down in history as the guilty men.

"The guilty men who put their political careers ahead of the safety and security of our country. It was the most disgraceful dereliction of duty I have ever known."

These measures from the justice secretary will be seen among the prison and probation sector as a proper attempt to reset and alleviate the immediate prisons crisis (see previous post).

But it doesn’t solve everything. Far from it.

The justice secretary admits today that the core announcement to lower the automatic release point from 50% to 40% is in itself an emergency measure.

At the moment, we are lurching from one emergency measure to the next.

There are safeguards in place that didn't exist under the previous controversial scheme launched by the Conservative government in October - allowing eligible offenders to be released up to 70 days before the end of their sentence.

Those safeguards might help offset some fears expressed by victims groups.

But it certainly doesn't offer a long term solution.

"Although it will be a law, it still does not resolve how we use prison in the long term," said one prison source.

"If we carry on with court backlogs and send more people to prison, we will be in the same position all over again," they said.

The government are committing to building more prison places.

But their prisons minister James Timpson fundamentally disagrees with that approach and thinks a third of people that are in prison shouldn't be there

There are lots of questions yet to answer about what meaningful reform looks like.

Course Description

ORGSTUDY 295.   Race and Organizations (Prof. Davon Norris)

This course introduces students to the array of ways in which race and racism influence organizational structures and how organizational processes then shape patterns of racial inequality. Beyond developing theoretical tools and empirical understandings of race and organizations, the class leverages wide ranging data and contexts to refine students analytic capabilities enabling them to answer complex and pressing social questions. For example, how do we create organizational structures to prevent racial discrimination in hiring or promotion? Why is racial inequality so persistent across organizations from firms to schools and even the government? Does the use of big data and algorithms produce more objective decision making that ameliorates racial inequality or not? How has regulation and legislation improved or potentially deepened problems of race in organizations?

We will grapple with these questions and more to understand race in America through organizations. In the process, we will sharpen our eye for identifying problems and evaluating evidence to imagine alternative possibilities and structures for the organizations we traverse.

Anticipated Class Schedule: Mon/Wed 2:30 pm-4pm

Estimated effort for the positions: 1 GSI position (.5 FTE)

Responsibilities*

The GSI will: (a) assist in organizing ad-hoc student groups, (b) provide assistance and feedback for assignments and content relating to the course, (c) manage resources for the classroom and any field work, (d) assist in Canvas management, (e) evaluate student work and record grades, (f) search for and screen relevant case studies and classroom exercises, and (g) handle other miscellaneous issues related to the course.

A first-time GSI is required to attend 20 hours of pedagogical classes offered by CRLT. They must attend the CRLT Fall 2022 GSI Teaching Orientation (GSITO), dates to be announced. Any remaining hours required beyond the CRLT GSI Orientation may be fulfilled by a series of planned pedagogical conversations with your faculty instructor of record and/or additional courses provided by CRLT or other UM units related to teaching. Possibilities include: ENGR 580, GERMAN 531, ROMLING 528, BA 830 & 831, PIBS 505, EEB/MCDB 494, ED 720, ED 7373, ED 834, HIST 812, PSYCH 958, MUICOL 509, or ELI 9941 (only sections focused on college level teaching), ED 790, ELI 994 or SWC/WRITING 993.

Required Qualifications*

Past course work and/or professional experience in the area of sociology or social scientific studies of race.

In compliance with Appendix A of the 2020-2023 UM/GEO agreement (see pp. 114-117 of the UM/GEO agreement) and as part of the training, the College of LSA also requires that potential GSIs whose undergraduate medium of instruction is not English be evaluated for effective proficiency in classroom English. Effective proficiency includes fluent and intelligible speech, the ability to understand the English spoken by the undergraduate students, the ability to produce organized, coherent explanations, and the ability to contribute to the development of interactions with their students. Graduate students are exempt from ELI 994 and the Graduate Student Instructor Oral English Test (GSI-OET) if they hold an undergraduate degree from a U.S. college or university, or an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the exclusive medium of instruction. The Department Chair can also refer to the course potential GSIs who need additional language instruction and/or introduction and orientation to the American university classroom and community. If referred, attendance and satisfactory completion is required as a condition of employment as a GSI. Students who are exempt may take the training course on a space-permitting basis. As part of the training and testing, graduate students are required to demonstrate their effective proficiency by taking the GSI-OET conducted by independent evaluators from the Testing Division at the ELI and a faculty representative from the department in which the prospective GSI will be teaching. In the event that an examinee does not successfully complete the GSI-OET at the end of a course, it is incumbent on the department that made admission and support offers to identify alternative support resources that are not GSI positions and that do not require direct contact with undergraduate students. It is not required that these "backup" support systems offer conditions of support that are identical or comparable in level to that which would come from a regular GSI position, but they must be sufficient to meet Department of Homeland Security requirements that the international student be able to demonstrate the existence of financial support during the first year of study. Such alternative support is contingent on the student's concurrently fulfilling ELI course requirements identified in the GSI-OET. This Test is provided at no cost to the student, and the ELI courses are available from the College to enrolled students. Although there is no limit to the number of times one can retake the GSI-OET, a student must complete the post-OET requirements to be eligible for a retest. There are two options for the training course during the year. There will be a Winter semester course (ELI 994) and a Summer course (both 2 credits), the latter only for new, first-term prospective GSIs. For LSA graduate students who are not required to attend the ELI 994 course but who would like to, prior written approval from the appointing department is necessary.

Desired Qualifications*

Interest in sociology, social inequality, race, and organizational behavior; graduate students in related disciplines. Candidates should have comfort with interpreting and communicating insights about race, racial inequality, and organizational dynamics from studies that use a range of methods (e.g., quantitative methods like regression and qualitative methods like in-depth interviewing), and be able to distinguish the relative strengths of different empirical research methods. Candidates should have exposure to different conceptualizations of discrimination and ways to identify discrimination, be able to apply insights from one empirical context to another, and be able to differentiate individual-level processes from structural/institutional processes. Additionally, ideal candidates would further have exposure to thinking about the mechanisms that animate racial inequality to translate the research we cover in class into actionable policies. LSA student preferred, students in non-LSA fields are welcome to apply.
