హ‌లోవీన్ ట్రెండ్ విదేశాల్లో ఎక్కువ‌గా క‌నిపిస్తుంది. ఈ క‌ల్చ‌ర్ తో హాలీవుడ్‌లో చాలా హార‌ర్ సినిమాలు రూపొందాయి. ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని మెప్పించాయి. ఇండియ‌న్‌స్క్రీన్‌పై మాత్రం హ‌లోవీన్ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌ను ఎవ‌రూ ట‌చ్ చేయ‌లేదు. తొలిసారి బూ సినిమాతో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఏ.ఎల్ విజ‌య్ ఈ జోన‌ర్‌ను ఎంచుకొన్నాడు. నాలుగు వేర్వేరు హార‌ర్ క‌థ‌లు...వాటికి అనుగుణంగా సాగే ఐదో క‌థ తో డిఫ‌రెంట్ స్క్రీన్‌ప్లేతో బూ సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించాడు.

నాలుగు క‌థ‌లు...

కైరా హ‌లోవీన్ పార్టీని ఏర్పాటుచేయ‌డం, స్నేహితులు ఆమె ఇంట్లో అడుగుపెట్టే సీన్స్‌తో బూ సినిమా ఆరంభ‌మ‌వుతుంది. వారు హ‌లోవీన్ బుక్ చ‌ద‌వ‌డం స్టార్ట్ చేయ‌డంతోనే సినిమా ఎగ్జైటింగ్‌గా మారుతుంది. ఒక్కో క‌థ ద్వారా ఒక్కో డిఫ‌రెంట్ హార‌ర్ స్టోరీస్‌ను స్క్రీన్‌ఫై ఆవిష్క‌రించారు.

ఫ‌స్ట్ స్టోరీ హిక‌ప్స్ మిడ్‌నైట్ టూలెట్ బోర్డ్ చూసి ఓ పెద్ద ఇంట్లో అద్దెకు దిగిన‌ ఓ జ‌ర్న‌లిస్ట్‌కు ఎదురైన అనూహ్య సంఘ‌ట‌న‌ల చుట్టూ సాగుతుంది. త‌న కారు కింద ప‌డి చ‌నిపోయిన ఓ వృద్ధుడితో పాటు బాలుడు ఆత్మ‌లు మాళ‌వికా అనే అమ్మాయిని వెంబ‌డించ‌డంతో ఏం జ‌రిగింద‌న్న‌ది సోల్ ట్రాప్ ఎపిసోడ్ క‌థ‌లో చూపించారు.

ఇంట్లో ఒంట‌రిగా ఉన్న జాన‌కికి ఓ ఆత్మ ఏ విధంగా చంప‌డానికి ప్ర‌య‌త్నించింద‌న్న‌ది మూడో క‌థ అన్ ఇన్వైటెడ్ గెస్ట్ స్టోరీలో(Boo Movie Review ) ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా స్క్రీన్‌పై ప్ర‌జెంట్ చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశారు.

ఆకాష్‌...మీరా...

ఆత్మ‌ క‌థ‌లో ద‌య్యాల‌పై ప‌రిశోధ‌న చేస్తోన్న పారానార్మ‌ల్ సైకాల‌జిస్ట్ ఆకాష్‌, త‌న ప్రియురాలు మీరాతో క‌లిసి ఓ పురాత‌న భ‌వంతిలో అడుగుపెట్ట‌డం, అక్క‌డ మీరా ఎలా ప్రాణాల‌ను కోల్పోయింద‌నే పాయింట్ చుట్టూ న‌డిపించారు.

ఒక్కో క‌థ చ‌ద‌వ‌డం ముగిసిన త‌ర్వాత కైరాతో పాటు ఆమె స్నేహితుల జీవితాల్లో చోటు చేసుకునే గంద‌ర‌గోళంతో ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని భ‌య‌పెట్టాల‌ని అనుకున్నారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు.ఈ ప్ర‌య‌త్నంలో పూర్తిగా స‌క్సెస్ కాలేక‌పోయారు.

ఐడియా బాగుంది కానీ...

హ‌లోవీన్ పార్టీ సెట‌ప్‌, నాలుగు క‌థ‌లు అనే ఐడియా బాగుంది. ఈ క‌థ‌ల్ని న‌డిపించే విధానంలో మాత్రం రోటీన్ హార‌ర్ దారిని ఎంచుకున్నాడు. ఎన్నో సినిమాల్లో ఉప‌యోగించిన సౌండ్‌, కెమెరా టెక్నిక్స్‌ను న‌మ్ముకోవ‌డంతో హార‌ర్ ఎఫెక్ట్ వ‌ర్క‌వుట్ కాలేదు.

కానీ నాలుగు క‌థ‌ల్లోని అమ్మాయిల‌కు ఆకాష్ జీవితాన్ని ముడిపెట్టే మ‌లుపుల‌తో పాటు కైరా స్నేహిత‌ల గురించి ఎండింగ్‌లో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఇచ్చిన ట్విస్ట్ స‌ర్‌ప్రైజ్ చేస్తుంది. అలాంటి సీన్స్ మ‌రొకొన్ని రాసుకుంటే బాగుండేది.

అంద‌రూ హీరోయిన్లే..

ఈ సినిమాలో ఎక్కువ‌గా హీరోయిన్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్సే క‌నిపిస్తాయి. కైరా పాత్ర‌లో ర‌కుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ న‌ట‌న ఓకే అనిపిస్తుంది. ఎక్స్‌ప్రెష‌న్స్‌, ఎమోష‌న్స్ విష‌యంలో మ‌రికొంత జాగ్ర‌త్త తీసుకుంటే బాగుండేది. నివేథా పేతురాజ్‌, మేఘా ఆకాష్‌, మంజిమామోహ‌న్ క‌నిపించేది పాత్ర‌ల నిడివి త‌క్కువే అయినా త‌మ న‌ట‌న‌తో ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపించారు. ఆకాష్ పాత్ర‌లో విశ్వ‌క్‌సేన్ ఎమోష‌న‌ల్ రోల్‌లో క‌నిపించాడు.

ఇటీవల విశ్వక్ సేన్ నటించిన ‘దాస్ కా ధమ్కీ’ పరాజయం తర్వాత, ‘బూ’ అనే హార్రర్ మూవీ తమిళ- తెలుగు భాషల్లో ఈ రోజు ఓటీటీలో విడుదలయింది. ఓటీటీ రంగంలోకి కొత్తగా ప్రవేశించిన జియో సినిమా దీన్ని ఉచితంగా అందిస్తోంది. విజయ్ అనే దర్శకుడు ఒక రాత్రి జరిగే ఈ హార్రర్ కథని గంటన్నర సినిమాగా తీశాడు. ఇందులో విశ్వక్ సేన్ తోబాటు ఐదుగురు హీరోయిన్లు కన్పిస్తారు. కనువిందు చేయడానికి అందాల హీరోయిన్ల శ్రేణి వుంది. థ్రిల్ చేయడానికి విశ్వక్ సేన్ వున్నాడు. ఇంకేం కావాలి? తారాగణంతోనే ఇంత ఊరిస్తున్న ఈ హార్రర్

తల్లి వూరికెళ్ళిన అవకాశాన్ని తీసుకుని రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ ఫ్రెండ్స్ ని ఆహ్వానిస్తుంది ఆ రాత్రి హలోవీన్ పార్టీకి. ఆ రోజు అక్టోబర్ 31 హలోవీన్ నైట్ జరుపుకునే సందర్భం. రకుల్ ఇంట్లో అస్థిపంజరాలు, దెయ్యపు ఆకారాలూ అలంకరించి, దెయ్యాల్ని ఆహ్వానిద్దా

మని చెప్పి ఒక హార్రర్ పుస్తకం తీసి కథలు చెప్పడం మొదలెడుతుంది. ఆ ఒక్కో దెయ్యం కథ నిజ జీవితంలో వాళ్ళ ముందుకొచ్చేసి బెదరగొడతాయి. అప్పుడు ఒక దెయ్యాన్ని వదిలించుకోవాలంటే ఇంకో దెయ్యం కథ చదవాలి. ఇలా చదువుకుంటూ పోతూంటే పారానార్మల్ సైంటిస్టు విశ్వక్ సేన్ కథ వస్తుంది. ఇప్పుడు ఈ కథ కీలకమైనది. ఈ కథ ఏమిటి? దెయ్యాల ఉనికి మీద ప్రయోగాలు చేసే విశ్వక్ సేన్, తను ప్రేమించిన ఒక్కో గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్ ని ఎలా కోల్పోతూ వచ్చాడు? చివరికి రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ తోనే పెళ్ళి చూపులు జరిగే సరికి, రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ ఏం చేసింది? ఈ హార్రర్ ప్రశ్నలకి సమాధానాల కోసం మిగతా సినిమా చూడాలి.

ఎలా వుంది కథ

అమెరికాలో, యూరప్ లో జరుపుకునే హలోవీన్ పండుగ ఇండియాలో అర్ధం లేకుండా కేవలం పిశాచాల మాస్కులేసుకుని భయపెట్టుకునే ఆటగా మార్చేశారు. పాశ్చాత్య దేశాల్లో వేసవి చివర్లో చేతి కందే పంటల్ని దుష్ట శక్తుల బారి నుంచి కాపాడుకునేందుకు అక్టోబర్ 31న హలోవీన్ పండుగ జరుపుకుంటారు. ఆ దుష్ట శక్తుల్ని తరిమి కొట్టేందుకే పిశాచాల మాస్కులేసుకుని నృత్యాలు చేస్తారు. దీన్ని రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ ఇంకో అడుగు ముందుకేసి దెయ్యాల్ని ఆహ్వానించే ఆటగా మార్చేసింది.

అయితే ఆమె పుస్తకంలో చదివే కథలతో ఎపిసోడ్స్ ఆసక్తికరంగానే వున్నాయి. ఇవి భయపెట్టే విధంగా వుండవుగానీ, ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తిస్తాయి. ఉదాహరణకి నివేదా పేతురాజ్ ఇల్లు అద్దెకి తీసుకున్నప్పుడు, నీకు వెక్కిళ్ళు వస్తాయా అనడుగుతుంది హార్రర్ ఫేసు గల ముసలవ్వ. రావని చెప్తుంది నివేద. తీరా ఇంట్లో దాహం వేసి నీళ్ళు లేక వెక్కిళ్ళు వస్తాయి. దాంతో దెయ్యం లేచి ఆమె పనిబడుతుంది.

ఇలాటి నాల్గు కథల తర్వాత విశ్వక్ సేన్ కథ వస్తుంది. ఇతను పారానార్మల్ సైంటిస్టుగా దెయ్యాలున్నాయా లేదా తేల్చడానికి ఒక కళ్ళు జోడు తయారు చేసి దాంతో ప్రయోగాలు చేస్తూంటాడు. ఇతడి ప్రయోగాలకి గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్స్ బలౌతూంటారు. ఇక ఇంకో బకరాగా రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ తోనే పెళ్ళి చూపులు జరిగే ట్విస్టుతో ముగింపుకొస్తుంది కథ.

ఈ మొత్తం కథలో హార్రర్ దృశ్యాలేం భయపెట్టేవిగా వుండవు. కానీ సస్పెన్స్ తో ఆసక్తికరంగా వుంటాయి. విద్యుల్లేఖా రామన్ కామెడీ పాత్ర భయపడే చేష్టలతో ఇది హార్రర్ సినిమా సుమా అని గుర్తు చేస్తూ పోయారు.

నటనలు-సాంకేతికాలు

రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ చదివే నాల్గు కథల తర్వాత ఐదో కథలో ఎంట్రీ ఇస్తాడు విశ్వక్ సేన్. అప్పటికి గంట సమయం గడిచిపోతుంది. అతడి ఎంట్రీ తర్వాత అరగంటే సినిమా వుంటుంది. గంటన్నర సినిమా కావడం ఒకటి, విశ్వక్ సేన్ గంటకి కనిపించడం వొకటి- ఇలా థియేటర్లో రిలీజ్ చేస్తే ప్రేక్షకులు హాహాకారాలు చేస్తారని కాబోలు ఓటీటీలో పడేశారు. అయితే విశ్వక్ సేన్ తన మాస్ యాక్షన్ కి దూరంగా సాఫ్ట్ గా, డీసెంట్ గా నటించాడు. కనిపించేది కాసేపే అయినా అర్ధవంతంగా నటించాడు.

రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ ది ఫన్నీ క్యారక్టర్. ఆమె ఫన్ కోసం పాల్పడే చర్యలు ఫ్రెండ్స్ ని భయపెట్టి చంపుతూంటాయి. పుస్తకంలోని ఒక కథతో దెయ్యంతో హార్రర్ లో ఇరుక్కోవడం, దానికి విరుగుడు ఇంకో కథ చదవడమేనని పుస్తకంలో చెప్పడంతో, ఇంకో కథా చదివి మళ్ళీ ఇరుక్కోవడం, అందులోంచి బయటపడేందుకు పుస్తకంలో చెప్పినట్టు ఇంకో కథా చదవడం... ఇలా ఆ పుస్తకం పన్నిన వలలో చిక్కుకుని గిలగిల కొట్టుకోవడం.

కానీ దెయ్యం కథల పుస్తకాలు ఎందుకో తెలుగులో వుండవు, ఇంగ్లీషులోనే వుంటాయి ‘ఫీల్’ కోసం. మిగిలిన పాత్రల్లో నివేదా పేతురాజ్, మేఘా ఆకాష్, మంజీమా మోహన్, రేబా మోనికా జాన్ లు కథలకి న్యాయం చేశారు. విద్యుల్లేఖా రామన్ ఇది హర్రర్ సినిమా అని గుర్తు చేస్తూ వుండడానికి ఒకటే భయపడే కామెడీ చేసింది. పోలీస్ ఇన్స్ పక్టర్ గా వచ్చే పృథ్వీరాజ్ కి ముగింపులో చిన్న ట్విస్టు ఇస్తాడు.

ఈ గంటన్నర సినిమా ఆద్యంతం విజువల్ అప్పీల్ తో వుంది. వదలకుండా చూసేలా చేస్తుంది. విశ్వక్ సేన్, రకుల్ ప్రీత్ సింగ్ వంటి స్టార్లు వున్నప్పుడు ప్రొడక్షన్ విలువలు రిచ్ గానే వున్నాయి. ముఖ్యంగా కెమెరా వర్క్, ఎడిటింగ్, కళా దర్శకత్వం, మేకప్, కాస్ట్యూమ్స్, సీజీ వర్క్ క్వాలిటీతో వున్నాయి.

దర్శకుడు విజయ్ రైటింగ్, మేకింగ్ పాత విలువలు జొరబడకుండా ఆధునిక దృక్పథంతో నిర్వహించడం ఈ హార్రర్ కి ప్లస్ అయింది. 2005 లో ఇదే టైటిల్ తో హాలీవుడ్ నుంచి హలోవీన్ హార్రర్ వచ్చింది. అది అర్ధం పర్ధం లేకుండా చీప్ హార్రర్ గా వుందని రివ్యూలున్నాయి. తెలుగు- తమిళ ‘బూ’ కి ఈ బురద అంటదని చెప్పొచ్చు.

BOO (2023) Telugu Movie: What's Behind

Rakul Preet Singh's horror entertainer BOO directed by AL. Vijay started streaming on Jio Cinema on 27 May 2023. The presence of Vishwak Sen increased the interest levels. Let us find out what thrills BOO offered to the viewers.

BOO Telugu Movie: Story Review

BOO story is all about four girls partying for Halloween and what follows next and their experiences. Kiara (Rakul Preet Singh) organizes a Halloween party at her house and invites her friends Rithu, Aruna, and Kavya (Reba Monica John, Vidyullekha Raman, Manjima Mohan). As they start enjoying the party, they experience a power failure and to pass the time, Kiara shows them a horror book that should be completed without a stretch and tells them that even the writer who wrote it died after reading it.

Where this leads to and how journalist Malavika (Nivetha Pethuraj), Akash, Vishwak Sen) paranormal scientist Meera (Megha Akash) are connected to it from the rest of the story.

BOO Telugu Movie: Artists Review

There is nothing much to talk about the performances. All the actors are well known to movie lovers and this generated interest among movie lovers. But all of them just passed through the motions. Anyway, they are not at fault as they got nothing much to do except for screaming, shrieking, and shouting with fear.

Rakul Preet Singh, Vishwak Sen, Nivetha Pethuraj, Megha Akash, Reba Monica John, Vidyullekha Raman, Manjima Mohan, and Aayira just performed those scenes to perfection. Vishwak Sen, Nivetha Pethuraj, and Megha Akash's roles are very limited. If the acting doesn't inspire any confidence, the fault lies not with the star cast but with the director.

BOO Telugu Movie: Technicians Review

BOO story penned by AL. Vijay is nothing new. He tried to come up with a horror thriller to scare all. But the story is mediocre and outdated to the core. Few people getting stranded in a house and then weird things happening have been dealt on the screen numerous times. Maverick director Ram Gopal Varma came up with similar stories way back in 2000 like Darna Mana Hai. This looks like a poor imitation.

The narration starts in a slow and silly manner and time was consumed with a song too. Then comes the book and the chapters in it, which goes on Hiccups, Lonely House, Soul Trapper, Uninvited Guest, and Haunted House. Viewers just watch the horror scenes as though they are comedy scenes. This shows the quality of the product.

There are no thrills and though pre-climax and climax is a little interesting even there logic goes for a toss. When the film ends, viewers heave a sigh of relief. The only saving grace is the length of the film which is very short. AL. Vijay's screenplay and direction puts even an amateur to shame.

There is nothing much to talk about the technical values. Sandeep K Vijay's cinematography is nothing to rave about. He just placed a camera in the house and then slept off. There are no highs in the camera angles. GV. Prakash Kumar's music is not good. He tried to elevate the scenes with his BGM which is just average. Editing is ok. Dialogues are silly and production values are ok.

Altogether BOO is a silly horror thriller. The makers roped in a good star cast but AL. Vijay came up with a pathetic story and with a ridiculous screenplay and direction, within minutes it sild into the disasters den. There is no script at all and with silly scenes, the makers became a laughing stock in front of even school kids. Watching this, people are left to wonder how the cast signed the film in the first place and how Jio Cinema gave the green signal for the project. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 1 Rating for BOO.

“BOO” revolves around four girls who come together for a Halloween party and subsequently experience eerie occurrences. Kiara (Rakul Preet Singh) hosts the party and invites her friends Rithu, Aruna, and Kavya (Reba Monica John, Vidyullekha Raman, Manjima Mohan). However, Vishwak Sen, Nivetha Pethuraj, and Megha Akash have limited roles. If the acting fails to inspire confidence, it can be attributed to the director rather than the star cast.

Technical Aspects:

The story of “BOO,” written by AL. Vijay, offers nothing new. It attempts to present a horror thriller, but the narrative feels mediocre and outdated. The concept of people getting stranded in a house and experiencing strange events has been explored extensively on screen. It resembles a poor imitation of similar stories seen in films like Ram Gopal Varma’s “Darna Mana Hai” from 2000.

The film’s narration starts off slow and silly, with unnecessary time spent on a song. The chapters in the horror book, including Hiccups, Lonely House, Soul Trapper, Uninvited Guest, and Haunted House, fail to evoke the intended thrills and often come across as unintentionally comedic. The overall quality of the product leaves much to be desired.

Regarding technical aspects, Sandeep K Vijay’s cinematography offers nothing noteworthy, lacking engaging camera angles. GV. Prakash Kumar’s music falls short of expectations, with average background score attempts to enhance the scenes. The editing is passable, while the dialogues are often silly. The production values are decent but don’t stand out.

With its captivating storyline, Rakul Preet Singh’s Boo has established the standard for horror-thriller films in the film industry. The Tamil-Telugu bilingual film was written and directed by A. L. Vijay.

Boo stars Rakul Preet Singh, Vishwak Sen, Nivetha Pethuraj,  Manjima Mohan, Megha Akash and Reba Monica John in the lead roles. It premiered on JioCinema on May 27, 2023.

The story for Boo revolves around four friends who gather for Halloween and decide to read a horror novel to celebrate the occasion. However, things take a strange turn when they start to experience bizarre events while reading the book, confirming the presence of something supernatural.

Boo: What happens at the end?

The plot of Boo centers on Kiara and her friends as they celebrate Halloween and come across a strange book titled “Halloween Stories.”Despite the book’s warning to read all the chapters without stopping, they embark on a journey into its ghostly tales. As they go deeper, they find themselves meeting the characters from the stories in real life.

After facing several unsettling twists from the book in real life, Kaira revealed that it was a prank for her friends. Her servants were pretending to be ghosts to create a frightening and immersive experience for the Halloween party. The next morning, Kaira woke up to the sound of her doorbell ringing where she was greeted by her servants. One of the servants revealed that they never actually come to her house the previous night for the prank. They informed her that she was the one who had called and canceled the plans.

So, when she went to check her phone, she discovered that not only were her friends’ phones missing, but she also had 89 missed calls from her friend Riya. Following Riya’s request, Kaira turned on the news and realized that her friends – Kavya, Aruna, and Rithika – were killed in a tragic accident. The CCTV footage showed Kaira alone in the house, seemingly playing by herself, at the time of the accident.

Towards the end of Boo, Kaira was seen trying to cope with the grief of her friends’ deaths. To help her move on and heal, her mother insisted that she meet a potential suitor arranged by her father.

Kaira finally met the mysterious suitor, but she found him a bit too familiar. So, when he introduced himself as Akash, the paranormal scientist, she realised he was similar to the character from the final chapter.

Were Kaira’s fears real?

There are endless possibilities of how Kaira found herself in this situation. Her encounter with the Ouija board could be the reason as she must’ve unknowingly opened a doorway to the supernatural. Also, her deep immersion in the supernatural world could have influenced her friends’ actions.

Another possibility is that the paranormal might have consumed Kaira’s mind. She had started hallucinating, which blurred the boundaries between reality and fiction for her. Her intense belief in the supernatural could have manifested itself in the form of ghostly appearances.

A third possibility is that Akash, the mysterious suitor, had a connection to one of Kaira’s friends. One of them could’ve encountered a fate similar to Meera’s in the book’s final chapter. While Akash may not have ill intentions towards Kaira, she was still concerned. The book’s supernatural elements could have seeped into Kaira’s world.

So, it is understandable that the events throughout Boo were nothing but extraordinary coincidences, with no direct connection between the book and Kaira’s friends’ deaths. However, without any evidence, each theory remains speculative. Boo is now streaming on JioCinema .

'Boo' movie review: When the script is more dead than the ghosts 

Boo, director Vijay's second attempt at horror after the rather forgettable Diya is quite a memorable film, just for all the wrong reasons.

Despite being one of the few all female multi-starrer of the country, at least on paper, Boo is just a glorified compilation video of five heroines taking turns to shout,"Yaar adhu?" in the dark for 90 minutes straight.

Though the film has a couple of capable performers, the film refuses to rise above this mediocrity thanks to its lackadaisical writing and amateur execution.

Four friends gather for a Halloween party and they decide to read a series of ghost stories to amp up their fear. But things take a different turn when the ghosts from the stories come searching for them in reality.

Though basing a film on this idea is older than Halloween, Vijay seems to have been heavily impressed by the idea that he choose to make it in not just one but two languages. It is surprising how both versions are majorly unique without any dubbing issues. But there ends the surprise factor. The stories that pan out within the story are alarmingly uninventive and almost stick to the same pattern. 

Vijay sticks to done-to-death tropes like a spooky bungalow owned by a creepy octogenarian, using mirrors to spot ghosts and supernatural messages on a smartphone for each of his segments. Even the ever-dependable jump scares are ineffective here as we see them coming a mile away. Probably in an attempt to keep the runtime in check, Vijay hardly gives any breathing space for the subplots. Before a heroine could even complete a couple of dialogues, her portion is cut short and is replaced by a new one from the next segment. 

The filmmaker's intention to make the audience find out whether the entire story is real or staged also falls flat on the face, as the performances of the exaggerated actors scream out the answer. While some horror films make us empathise with the ghost and some make us sob for its victims, Boo makes us feel terrible for its lead actors. Excluding Reba Monica John and Rakul to an extent, none of the stars get a character with substance. 

A main character in Boo, makes an elaborate plan to prank a bunch of people. She comes up with a script, trains her actors, even plans the perfect timing for execution and finally, everything works in her favour. I wish director Vijay had put in half her efforts.

Introduction

It is still a Tuesday and last night was an epic finale of the highest proportion when Chennai Super Kings beat the defending champions Gujarat Titans in a nail biting encounter. And such has been the season for CSK and that one man behind the show MS Dhoni who has been lapped up and cheered right throughout the country. Our little rockstar Ravindra Jadeja did pay a perfect tribute to him by scoring 10 runs of the final 2 balls in what was a heist of a run chase! Ahhh, fairy tale endings are quite a thing aren’t they? One of the interesting aspects of the IPL final was that it continuee for over 3 nights. While the show on Sunday was stalled due to the torrential rains, the Rain Gods almost played spoilsport yet again yesterday before the match resumed, and eventually ending by 3 AM in the morning. As a result, I had just enough time to quickly watch one film and be ready in time for a review today. And I had to settle for the Telugu film Boo which is streaming on Jio Cinema despite me not quite interested in it, primarily because it was barely 90 minutes long and would get over in a jiffy. Now, no one from the starcast did promote the film which had a direct digital release on the OTT platform, and that is almost like a giveaway on what the film has to offer. Jio Cinema needs to be careful as to not over sell their platform and in the process become a dumping ground for content(like MX Player). Any which way, now that I have finished watching Boo, here are my two cents on the same.

Story & Screenplay

Boo follows the story of four friends who gather for a Halloween party until strange occurences start to take place through the night. The story has an interesting premise and is in the mould of horror films like Darna Mana Hai and Darna Zaroori Hai. So the theme is multiple horror tales wrapped inside a single story. But the screenplay of barely 90 minutes is so patchy and so poor that I barely was invested at any given point of time. The drama opens on a ridiculously bad note with all the friends assembling in a house at night. The issue is not with the setting but the creative decision to fill the drama with stereotypes and unnecessary comedy. So the healthy girl(for the lack of a better word, not fat shaming) is the one who is after food and is meant to be funny through her antics. The rest of the two girls are just ‘there’ while the fourth girl is said to be the showrunner. Why? Because she is the prettiest of the lot, silly! When this is the level of writing, how do you expect the viewers to take the drama seriously. But Farhad, this is a horror film right? We can talk about that, instead? Perhaps it is promising? The answer is NO in capital letters! Each of the individual tales are just so sketchy and half-hearted that you barely feel anything for the characters. The proceedings are unintentionally funny. Now picture this – a girl enters a house only to find out that she should have hiccups. Because if she does, she is doomed. How ridiculous can you get with the writing? Not a single frame that is scary or even remotely builds itself up with the right kind of atmospherics. It is as bad as bad can be, perhaps a notch worse than that. As a reviewer, I was almost like give me something to write on but the moments just did not arrive. The individual stories are far too random in the drama, so much so that you stop caring about them. There was a line in the film which said that those who would read the book(the source of the stories told throughout the film) then they would die. Yes, with boredom, I could not agree more! The final act did comprise of one of the most ridiculous acts ever, randomly linking every story with a character before reversing the twist and later again throwing in the ‘Uno Reverse’ card. There was no logic provided on why things are the way they are even in terms of a few characters. This, while I had to switch to 2X mode to get done with the film and instead get some sleep. The screenplay is a disaster of the highest order.

Dialogues, Music & Direction

The dialogues are cringe worthy and make for zero inpact. One of the key ingredients for a horror film is a resounding soundtrack. But this was perhaps the most generic BGMs that I have been privy to in a very long time! The cinematography and editing do not exude any confidence at all. Director AL Vijay does a horrible job here. There is neither an effort of world building nor a taste for building up the tension. The proceedings are incredibly bad and the director needs to take part of the blame for the same.

Performances

The performances comprise of a stellar cast but apart from Rakul Preet Singh(relatively so), none of the actors leave a mark. And it had a lot to do with how their characters were written. Nivetha Pethuraj is a talented actor but she fails to leave a mark. Megha Akash, Manjima Mohan, Aayira and Vidyullekha Raman are caricatures in the film. Vishwak Sen has very little to do. This was a collective mess in the acting department too.

Boo is a brilliant masterclass on how NOT to make a Horror Film. Period. Available on Jio Cinema.
