From June to July 2018, I worked in Good Ventures’ residential investment section as an intern. There were 10 employees in total. 

My duties at Good Ventures were consulting on fix-and-flips prices and advising about the best market seasons to invest. I also helped employees prepare financial reports based on profits from individual sales for June and July.

I learned how to use Good Ventures’ in-house software that compared company prices to market value. Although the company is very fast-paced and it was challenging to complete all of my duties, I gained valuable experience, learned how to manage my time and how to organize work to maximize efficiency.

In the two months with Good Ventures, I feel I was able to learn as much as I could. However, I would like to learn more about the real estate market, including how to price new builds and how to discuss mortgage services for first-time buyers. 

This internship experience was important in building my business administration skills. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get practical experience.

I decided to intern with the company because their objective was similar to the goal I am pursuing.

My role at May Financial was to audit clients’ financial statements. I worked with 20 employees in auditing grocery sales trends. Additional duties included collecting data, creating auditing reports and presenting findings to my manager. 

While I was interning at May Financial, I gained the ability to conduct sales content. I found analyzing and conducting content very important in helping me enhance auditing sales content. I thought this process of auditing required the knowledge of advanced concepts, but it helped me understand how to conduct gap analysis by auditing numbers, processing and measuring form. 

May Financial has successfully introduced me to the industry. I realized that I needed to develop confidence in accounting details. It would be preferable if I finished checking numbers at a faster pace, as reconciling statements was time-consuming.

In conclusion, I believe I learned a lot from my supervisors and about accounting in general.

An internship report may be a requirement for you to complete your internship, but it is also a chance to share your experiences. Organization is important when writing an effective report. You will need a professional-looking title page , followed by a series of neatly-labeled sections describing your internship. If you share your experiences clearly and objectively, your report is likely to be a success.

Creating the Title Pages and Formatting the Document

Step 1 Number each page...

  • Having the page number enables readers to use your table of contents.
  • Page numbers help you organize your report and replace missing pages.

Step 2 Make a cover...

  • For example, you might write, “Internship Report On Investment Banking At Gringotts Bank.”
  • A generic title like "My Internship Report" is usually acceptable if you can't come up with anything else.

Step 3 Include your name and internship information on the cover page.

  • For example, write "My Internship Report. Crimson Permanent Assurance. May-June 2018."
  • Keep the information neat on the page. Center the text and leave space between each line.

Step 4 Mention any special acknowledgements on the next page.

  • You may wish to mention your school supervisor, work supervisor, and anyone else you worked with.
  • For example, say, “I would like to thank Dr. No for giving me the opportunity to do this internship.”

Step 5 Include a table...

  • The acknowledgement page should be listed on the table of contents. The title page does not need to be listed.
  • If your report includes graphs or figures, you may wish to include a separate table of contents indicating where they can be found.

Step 6 Write an abstract...

  • For example, start with, “This report details a summer internship at Stark Industries in Malibu, CA. I worked in the Robotics Division.”

Writing the Body of the Report

Step 1 Title each section of your report.

  • For example, a section might be called, “Overview of Gringotts Bank.”
  • A few simple section titles are “Introduction,” “Reflections on the internship,” and “Conclusion.”

Step 2 Open your introduction

  • For example, write, “RamJack provides service robots to countries across the world. As a pioneer in its industry, Ramjack is uniquely qualified to clean up environmental disasters.”

Step 3 Explain the part of the organization you worked for.

  • For example, mention, “From May to June 2018, I worked in Ramjack’s electrical engineering division as an intern along with 200 other workers.”
  • Remember that this is a story about you, so use your personal style to engage readers.

Step 4 Describe your responsibilities during the internship.

  • You might write, “My responsibilities at Ramjack included soldering electrical wiring, but I also did component maintenance.”

Step 5 Write about what you learned during the internship.

  • Think about ways you have changed as a person, not only as a worker.
  • For instance, you might say, “I learned a lot about how to communicate with people in the community who are very different from me.”

Step 6 Evaluate your experience with the internship.

  • You might write, “Ramjack would benefit from improved communication. Often, the supervisors were unclear about what they expected from me.”

Step 7 Reflect on how you performed in the internship.

  • You might write something like, “At first I was too quiet, but I learned to be bolder and more confident so that management took my ideas seriously.”

Step 8 Use an appendix...

  • For example, if you worked in communications, include press releases, ads, letters, or tapes you produced.
  • If you have nothing to add, you may be required to write a paragraph about why you have no supplemental material.

Practicing Good Writing Techniques

Step 1 Organize your information...

  • This helps you stay organized. You want the sections to flow together well without repeated information.

Step 2 Write at least 5 to 10 pages.

  • If you don’t have enough material to stretch out the paper, you are better off leaving it shorter.
  • You may need to write more than 10 pages, especially if you had an extensive internship or are studying for a high-level degree.
  • The page requirement may differ depending on your internship program.

Step 3 Maintain an objective tone throughout the report.

  • For instance, you can say, “I had a difficult time working at Wayne Industries, but I learned a lot.” Avoid saying “Wayne Industries is the worst.”
  • An example of fact-based writing is, “Wayne Industries has a 75% share in the gadget market.”

Step 4 Use specific examples to describe your internship.

  • For example, write, “Acme Corporation left out an unsecured bundle of dynamite. I felt unsafe working there.”
  • You might write, “My supervisor sent me to take pictures of a river dolphin that washed up near a remote Bolivian village.”

Step 5 Include observations you have about real life.

  • You might work in a lab and write, “The employees are on their feet all day, but they know they are helping people, so they arrive in the morning brimming with energy.
  • Another example is, “Oscorp is very busy, and the employees would be happier with additional help. This is a problem for many companies across the country.”

Step 6 Review your report after writing it.

  • Reading out loud can help, as well as letting someone else read your work.

Step 7 Edit the report...

  • Be aware of any submission deadline your program has. Give yourself plenty of editing time by writing the report before then.

Sometimes, you can’t avoid using the passive voice in formal documents that prohibit the first-person point-of-view. But when done well, it helps to make your progress reports more relatable.

Going back to the food concession example, a passive sentence would read: “Research on potential food concessionaires was carried out.”

To make that sentence active, give it an actor (which is the team in this case), as in: “The team researched on potential food concessionaires.”

4. Be specific

3. Monthly progress report ing

A monthly report is necessary for projects with longer durations. The report may provide both monthly and quarterly data on project progress.

4. Team progress report s

Team progress reports provide information on both team and individual milestones and progress status. Now this one is more complicated, simply because it involves several people who may have worked on different tasks.

It’s not enough to just let one person make the report. Of course, one person can do the typing, but everyone must provide input and feedback.

One way to keep a record of different team members’ input is to keep track of edits they have made.

To do this, simply enable tracking of changes on a Word document, or on Pages for Mac users. When working on a collaborative tool like Google Docs , click the pencil icon on the top-right part of the window, and choose “Edits become suggestions” on the drop-down menu. Here’s what that looks like:

On the other hand, team members can insert comments or questions. Again, you can do this easily on a Word document, as well as on software that let you comment on shared documents, like Google Docs and Piktochart .

One last thing… You’ve finally finished typing up your report—breathe a sigh of relief, but don’t hit ‘send’ just yet.

Go over it at least once (better to do it more than once, especially if it’s a team report). Re-read the article, edit the content as needed, then ask a teammate to proofread with a fresh pair of eyes.

Evolving From an Internship to Joint Research Between NEC and University Laboratories

Nakashima joined NEC after completing his master's degree in 2023. He has been involved in cryptography research since his students days and is currently conducting research in the data security field with a focus on secure computation.

Participating in an internship for his studies with no thought of finding a job

I first learned about the NEC internship through an announcement on a university mailing list around May during the first year of my master's degree. The announcement was framed as a research internship opportunity for students in homomorphic encryption, which is my major. So, I thought that I might learn something since that is my major, and I applied for the internship. At the time, I wasn't even thinking about finding a job, so to be honest, I only applied for the sake of my own research. In particular, NEC has many researchers who are internationally active in the cryptography field. I recall that when I consulted with my academic adviser, he told me, "I think that you can learn a lot at NEC's research laboratory" and recommended that I participate in the internship. At the time, I was living in Kyushu and participated remotely in the internship. However, that was in the summer of 2021, right when the Tokyo Olympics were being held. It was a time when the number of people infected with COVID-19 was increasing. Initially, I planned to visit the research laboratory at the beginning and end of my internship, but in light of the situation at that time, I shifted to a fully remote arrangement with my PC being delivered and returned by home delivery service. The employment interviews and presentation of the employment offer were also held online, so I only set foot inside NEC after I joined the company. That being said, during the internship period NEC provided a mentor, established online opportunities to consult and report on my progress once every two days, and I was connected via chat at all times, so I did not feel like I was being left alone. NEC also established time for one-on-one chats with the team members during the internship period. Of course, I am no longer working only remotely but also reporting to the office to work face to face. In fact, it seems many of the students who interned this year were working in-house. I think that is a more stimulating environment.

The overall theme of the internship is presented during the recruiting process, but the specific details of the work are determined in consultation with your supervisor and mentor in light of the situation where you are assigned as well as your own interests and skills. In my case, I mainly focused on the implementation of cryptography. In addition, I also investigated encryption methods, held seminar-format study sessions, and conducted improvement studies. In the study sessions, I summarized the encryption method algorithms and other information that I investigated on slides, gave a presentation to the team members, received suggestions, and engaged in a question and answer session to jointly think about ways to improve the algorithms. This led to a lively discussion and created a very stimulating forum. During the implementation, I worked on the development of homomorphic encryption (encryption method which can perform computation with data in an encrypted form). I had never really carried out a full-scale implementation at university, so it was a really fresh experience for me. When trying to implement cryptography in a practical way, there are various aspects that you must pay attention to. For example, when generating a random number, you cannot use the kind of algorithm that is implemented in a game, etc. because you have to use something which is properly secured. I majored in mathematics during my undergraduate days and was a novice when I started doing cryptography for real with my master's degree, so I had not even mastered such basic rules and only learned about them when a team member pointed them out to me. In addition, the pursuit of practical speed also became an important point. Naturally, the goal in corporate research is to tie it to productization and business. The discussion unfolds such that one might say, "If you are going to use it for this solution, then this encryption method is probably better" or conversely, "This method is unsuited to this authentication, so we should do it a different way." This kind of discussion which places social implementation as the goal was very stimulating. I was able to come to the realization that technologies that I thought up or implemented could benefit society and people, which was a lot of fun. Of course, that feeling remains unchanged to this day.

An introduction to Nakashima's daily schedule during his internship

Evolving from research conducted during his internship to co-authoring research papers presented at top international conferences.

In my case, the research activities into cryptography that I worked on during my internship continued even after the internship period ended. The university research laboratory entered into a full-scale collaboration with NEC to conduct joint research. As a result, a research paper summarizing this work was successfully published by ESORICS '23, a top cryptography related international conference, and I was able to list my name as a co-author. (Note 1) My senior colleagues are heading to the conference site to give an oral presentation.  In this way, it is not unusual for research conducted during an NEC internship to lead to presentations at an academic conference. This year as well, results produced by students during their internship period were presented at an academic conference in Japan with the students' names listed as co-authors. Moreover, even if the research content does not tie into results in academia, what you learn in the internship will nourish your own research. I myself was able to acquire knowledge about cryptographic technology through my NEC internship, which I believe helped me to grow. In fact, the research paper that I presented during the second year of my master's degree won a research paper award at the SCIS conference in Japan. (Note 2) The award ceremony was held in January of this year. I believe that the NEC internship was a good opportunity to broaden and deepen the scope of my own research. After finishing my internship, I discovered that the recruiting process had started and immediately applied. For my interview, I created materials and gave a presentation on "what I would like to achieve after joining NEC." The selection process advanced very quickly, and they extended an offer, so I decided to directly join NEC. The internship was a lot of fun, and the team members were all very kind and nice, so I considered myself lucky to be able to join NEC. There are many NEC researchers that I hold in high regard. There are some who have been active in academia as researchers and produced results for many years while others excel at coordinating with others and promoting co-creation as business people. I am very grateful to be able to work in such an extremely inspiring workplace.
