‘Togo’ Review: Willem Dafoe Teams With World’s Most Heroic Dog in Moving Disney+ Drama

Yes, yes, there’s Willem Dafoe , but Ericson Core’s moving historical drama “Togo” is a canine-obsessed affair. And why shouldn’t it be? The Disney+ original joins a long line of classic predecessors like “Balto,” “Iron Will,” “White Fang,” and a ballooning number of “Call of the Wild” adaptations (another one is on the way next year, starring Harrison Ford), though this one has a bit more on its mind than the rest of its doggy brethren. While even casual dogsledding fans likely know the name of Balto — a brave sled dog who inspired both his own animated franchise (from Universal Pictures, not Disney) and a popular statue in Central Park — few are familiar with Togo, arguably the real hero of the so-called “Great Race of Mercy.”

Impressive special effects, a warm performance by Dafoe, and an ungodly amount of cute pups raise the film a cut above Disney+’s other recent offerings, and Core’s drama seems poised to break out as the streaming service’s first true crowdpleasing hit. Tom Flynn’s screenplay wedges in a hefty amount of fact-based drama (with a few curious tweaks), and while those elements will likely prove less appealing to younger viewers, the human demands and the canine cost of the quest to secure diphtheria-fighting serum during a horrific Alaska winter are the stuff of classic drama. Dafoe stars as legendary breeder and musher Leonhard Seppala (who helped normalize the use of Siberian Huskies beyond their Native American roots) as he sets out on a 600-mile journey to obtain the medicine needed to save the children of his adopted hometown of Nome, Alaska.

But “Togo” is really about just that: Leonhard’s wondrous lead dog Togo, a true underdog who saves the day, even when beset by harrowing circumstances that would fell a lesser pack. “Togo” opens in the midst of the epidemic, with most of the town’s children quarantined and awaiting a cure that might never come. While Leonhard and his plucky wife Constance (a reliably great Julianne Nicholson) don’t have their own child to worry about (one of few tweaks to the story that rankle; the Seppalas actually did have an ill young daughter), “Togo” makes the case that it’s up to Leonhard to help his community simply because he is a member of it.

As Leonhard, Togo, and the team set out on a quest that could easily end in failure, death, or worse, Flynn’s screenplay flips back in time to Togo’s doggie youth. Ill, underweight, and chronically mischievous, he’s hardly Leonhard’s first pick for a sled dog, but Constance’s affection for the little pup can’t be denied. “They’re not pets, they’re not our friends, they’re not our children, they’re animals, they’re work  animals,” Leonhard lectures, just before Togo makes off with some other bit of disobedience. Both Leonhard and Togo are born leaders (even as a puppy, Togo incites his peers into assisting him on crazy endeavors), but their bond is not initially guaranteed. Leonhard even attempts to give the dog away, not just once, but twice, both times ending in mayhem.

“He’s more trouble than he’s worth!,” one would-be owner yells, but once Leonhard discovers that Togo’s energy really is best served on the sled, that’s no longer the case.

Togo is styled as the film’s hero — the townspeople cheer for him as the group departs, not Leonhard, but one gets the sense that neither the actor nor the character are put out by it — but while turning attention to the pup makes “Togo” more appealing to the younger set, it flattens some of the human drama at the film’s heart. So does the choice to simplify how the Great Race actually played out: It sets up Leonhard as the sole musher to make the journey, and then reveals a relay of other mushers, all tapped to turn the dire journey into easier segments. While the shock revelation picks up some mid-movie slack, it also adds an unnecessary kink in a film that wants to set some of the historical record straight.

Balto, who led the team that completed the final leg of the race (and yes, he does appear in the film), has long been heralded as the primary dog hero, but it’s Togo’s extraordinary mettle that made the journey possible. Stellar effects work bolster the race itself, including a harrowing scene in which the entire pack nearly goes over a steep ravine, second only to a horrifying sequence that sees the crew zipping across the crumbling ice of the Norton Sound (arguably the most well-known element of Seppala and Togo’s quest, though the film adds some extra drama) and nearly dying in the process. (Dafoe reportedly learned to dogsled to play the role, and that commitment and veracity shine through.) The long stretches of sledding might prove wearing to some, but they’re impressively filmed, and they capture the fear and foreboding of the situation, plus the absolute skill of both Leonhard and his pups.

And yet the film really hits hard when it leans more into the emotion of it all, from Togo’s incredibly adorable puppyhood (break out the awards for canine acting ASAP) to more trying moments on the trail. Good luck not getting choked up when a shaken Leonhard cuddles Togo and his team after a tough trek, yelping out cries of “Good dog! Good dogs, all!” Those elements are also what help power a somewhat unexpected final half hour that chronicles what happened after the ostensible victory that was the Great Race.

While another film (cough, “Balto,” cough) would have concluded with delivering the serum and saving the children (a good ending, to be sure), Core follows Togo and the Seppalas in the days after the journey. The lingering possibility that Togo may have run his last haunts Leonhard (and will likely break a few young viewers’ hearts along the way), but it speaks to the film’s grasp on serving up reality and truth, even when it hurts. The record may favor Balto, but both he — and his animated franchise — have some stiff competition from the charms of Togo.

“Togo” will be available to stream on Disney+ starting December 20.

Togo ending explained – will Togo keep working his block?

This article discusses the ending of the Netflix film Togo (2022) and will contain spoilers.

Togo (2022) is a Spanish-language film and the first original movie from Uruguay. Written and directed by Israel Adrián Caetano ( Bolivia ), the film stars Diego Alsono as the titular character. Togo is a neighborhood ambassador. He is the “road attendant” who helps visitors and residents in and out of parking spaces. Togo has gone completely white and grey, has a limp, and is well over his 60s. He will also clean your car, and all you owe him is a tip which amounts to pocket change.

Basically, this is a position where you can loiter and beg for change under cover of honest work. And it is, in a way. Togo does serve the purpose also of being a neighborhood watch. One night, he runs across a teenager who collapses, high on drugs, named Mercedes (Catalina Arrillaga). He offers her the location of a faucet and a piece of cardboard to sleep on. Togo has his setup and lives like Fredo Baggins. He sleeps between the perfect shapes roots of a tree in the park, offering excellent coverage at night.

The neighborhood is changing. Diego has been living alone for a while since his daughter entered rehab. Mercedes represents the child he could protect. She keeps coming back, even though she lives in a beautiful home with her parents. One night, after finally sensing the depressed teenager, he witnesses a local dealer being murdered a block or two away. It’s a group of Narcos who have moved into his territory. Soon, they take Milton’s block in front of the grocery store, which is a close friend of Togo. Milton later gives up the league because the group assaulted him. That finally was the last straw for Togo. After one of them brandishes a weapon our hero, a former boxer, knocks both punks out. This is terrible news for Togo since the crime boss just told him to clear out a few days prior.

There was a murder attempt on his life. Togo watches the Narcos mistake a bunch of blankets for him, shoot a half dozen bullets, and start his belongings on fire. At the same time, he hid among the tree branches, as after one of the Narcos was filmed trying to talk his way into the rehab center where Togo’s daughter resides, he has had enough. He lines his cane with barbed wire and attacks the group in the park who tell him where their boss is. This leads him to a social club, where Togo takes out the management by using his fist and comes to knock out the man’s brand-new teeth.

Togo tells him to stay away from his block and neighborhood.

The film ends with Mercedes arriving and putting on her yellow safety vest. She sits next to Togo, who gives her the assignment for the day. Togo looks across the grass and sees a black sedan pull up with fully blacked-out tinted windows.

No one gets out of the car. It simply drives away. Togo looks satisfied that he has protected his community and territory.

The first time feature filmmaker is director-writer Israel Adrian Caelano from Uruguay. He tells the grim story of a middle-aged homeless man living on the streets of Montevideo, Togo ( Diego Alonso, offering an excellent portrayal ), who parks cars on his block to earn some money in an area reserved for him. A girl from a wealthy family named Mercedes ( Catalina Arrillaga ), who runs away from home, volunteers to help him park cars. She lives with him under a tree in the neighborhood, and he treats her like a daughter. He finds out she’s seeing a shrink and has been prescribed meds but is not taking them. He then brings her back home and talks her into taking her meds and dealing with her folks. He tells her he has a daughter and lived on the streets when his wife left him. When drug-dealing thugs, working for a drug ring, put the squeeze on him to sell drugs, he refuses. The film revolves around how he fights back against them, against all odds, and acts to protect his bad neighborhood from getting worse. The thugs didn’t know he was a former boxer and could still fight, and learn the hard way not to mess with him. It’s a simple and predictable film, that resorts to a cliched climax with a happy ending. Though not very entertaining or exciting or believable, it still felt good to root for someone as virtuous as Togo.

Netflix’s Togo: Is the Thriller Movie Rooted in Reality?

Directed by Israel Adrián Caetano, Netflix’s ‘Togo’ is a crime thriller movie that follows the titular protagonist, an aged man who works as a car attendant near a supermarket. Though homelessness is hard, he manages it through strangers’ kindness and sincerity towards his work. Togo befriends Mercedes, a teenage girl who leaves a troubled home environment to live on the streets, and helps him with the car parking. However, their uneventful life is soon disrupted when local traffickers threaten them and their friends to peddle drugs .

Refusing to be a part of the criminals’ activities, Togo decides to stand up to them and protect the neighborhood he holds dear to him. The movie’s gripping narrative, coupled with nuanced performances by actors like Diego Alonso, Catalina Arrillaga, and Néstor Prieto, keeps the audience rooting for the protagonist till the end. Moreover, the realistic portrayal of social issues makes one wonder if ‘Togo’ is based on true events. If you are curious to know the same, here is everything you need to know!

Togo is a Fictional Story

‘Togo’ has been adapted from an original script by Israel Adrián Caetano, who has also directed the movie. Despite being a fictional tale, the drama movie explores several prevalent problems in urban society, including drug trafficking, homelessness, as well as the impact of family conflicts on a person’s mental health. Furthermore, in a January 2022 interview with Variety , the director shared how he wrote the story from his observations of Uruguay’s immigrant population, especially after the 2002 economic crisis.

“I’ve lived in Uruguay for a year now and am discovering that there are so many stories to tell. The country has many unique qualities and has lately experienced a great influx of immigrants, especially from Venezuela and Cuba, which provokes change, both good and bad,” said Caetano. Interestingly, Togo is of African descent, and the director stated his reason for choosing the protagonist from the said community.

Caetano added, “Around 13% of  Uruguay’s population is of African descent, but they are marginalized, virtually invisible.” Through Togo’s character, he wished to portray the gradual rise in homelessness among the African community in Uruguay’s capital Montevideo, and how they survive frugally doing menial jobs. Besides, he wanted to subtly explore the societal racism faced by the people.

Keeping all these themes in mind, the director wrote the story in February 2021, and Netflix immediately picked it up for production. ‘Togo’ further explores how life on the streets is often associated with drug cartels, as the latter may offer quick and easy money for survival. Thus, the protagonist’s strong reluctance to indulge in such an activity and the implications he faces due to his decision feel connected to reality.

In addition, Mercedes’ troubled family environment affecting her mental health is not unheard of, as several teenagers struggle with unstable homes and are often pushed into illegal activities, seeing it as a means of escape. On top of that, several other movies have utilized the trope of an older man taking in a young protégé, just like Togo gives refuge to her.

Hence, the movie is a work of fiction, yet it draws from real social problems and stories to weave a believable narrative and characters who generate empathy in the audience’s minds. Though it has some dramatic elements which may not seem too realistic, ‘Togo’ sensitizes viewers about an often neglected section of society and drives across a powerful message on courage and giving back to the community.

‘Togo’ (2022) Netflix Movie Review - A Film With A Lost Plot!

This newly released movie on Netflix shows us a story with an unusual setting. The film has an underlying dark theme and does not cater to any fun or entertaining element.

The film tells us the story of a middle-aged man named Togo, who works and lives in the street. Togo is a car attendant and helps the cars get parked. He and his friend have an area of the neighborhood where they handle the parking. Togo is someone who does not have a place to live and therefore lives under a tree in the neighborhood. A girl from a well-off family insists on helping him and starts living on the streets as his assistant. A group of thugs who deal with drugs tries to enter Togo’s area and persuades him into selling drugs. The entire movie is a story about how he protects his neighborhood and the girls from these goons and maintains the peace.

The film is quite average in terms of its pace and plotline. Togo does have a different story. we have always come across movies related to the world of drug dealing or even about drug dealers. This movie is different et from those. This shows us the story from the other side. But even though it does have a different concept, the movie does have any interesting elements which make it a must-watch. There are characters and elements involved which does not make any sense or give meaning to the story of the movie.

Even though the whole point of the film is to see how Togo helps his neighborhood by not becoming a drug dealing area, the thugs play a very little role in the film and do not bring in any reality and feel like a very weak threat. This will question the plotline and the reality of the movie. The drug dealers are mostly lost in the background and are not able to portray the threat Togo feels as it should have.

The film also has a very clichéd climax and is very much predictable. The film has so much potential but somehow gets lost and does not bring the essence or message with any great effect. Even though we get to know about Togo’s family, and background, these elements do not add up to what the film wanted to bring out and therefore do not cater to making it better. It’s an average watch and we cannot expect any sort of entertainment in the film. Even though it claims that it is gritty by genre, the film does not fully do justice to this genre. Nevertheless, it’s a one-time watchable just to see the other side of drug dealing or the people affected by it.

Meanwhile, Riley’s emotions - Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) - make sure that things run smoothly at headquarters so that Riley can adapt to her new environment easily. ‘Space Cadet’ Review: Emma Roberts Shoots for the Stars

Some of Hollywood’s most durable genre conventions have to do with outsiders and underdogs, often two categories rolled into one, who show up the self-important elites. The cowboy who rolls into town and brings justice in a not-quite-law-abiding way. The lovable con artist who makes a fool of the uppity society folks. The washed-up cop or spy called in for one last covert mission. The stereotypical sorority girl who turns out to be a secret legal genius.

That last one is, of course, the “Legally Blonde” heroine Elle Woods, a fashion major who decides on a whim to go to Harvard Law School and discovers her unconventional qualifications give her insight that her more buttoned up classmates lack. Rex Simpson, the protagonist of “Space Cadet,” bears more than a passing resemblance to Elle, and not just because the actress Emma Roberts could play, at a squint, Reese Witherspoon’s niece. (Her actual aunt, Julia Roberts, played another scrappy underdog in “Erin Brockovich.”)

Roberts’s most famous work might be in Ryan Murphy’s shows “American Horror Story” and “Scream Queens,” in which her knack for playing a certain kind of queen bee — gorgeous, cruel, one crisis away from combustion — makes her a magnetic presence. She’s great at a caricature, elevating those characters to satire without diluting their sugary poison. That flair for exaggeration would seem to make Rex Simpson the right role for her.

“Space Cadet,” a comedy written and directed by Liz W. Garcia, is cast closely along the lines of “Legally Blonde,” with some beats lifted so clearly from that movie I started to wonder if they weren’t meant as jabs. Rex is a neon-wearing bartender in Florida who wrestles alligators and loves to party on the beach, but there’s more than meets the eye: She was a bit of a science genius in high school, and dreamed of being an astronaut. When her mother died, she turned down a full ride to Georgia Tech. By the time she attends her 10-year high school reunion with her best friend, Nadine (Poppy Liu), she’s down in the dumps over her failure to, uh, launch.

A chance encounter with a former classmate who now runs a private spaceflight company sparks something in Rex. It’s time to chase her dreams. So she pops open the NASA website and decides to apply to be an astronaut. One problem, of course, is that she has absolutely no qualifications for the job. But is that a real barrier to Rex, the woman who invented patent-worthy tanning mirrors?

The movie continues in this direction, sending her to NASA in a crop top to become an Astronaut Candidate (or AsCan, a moniker that provides more than a few jokes). Here is where the “Legally Blonde” comparisons come in. There is, for instance, a scene in a classroom where Rex doesn’t know the answer to a stern professor’s question, then one later where she does, demonstrating her growth. There’s a whole sequence in which people look askance at Rex upon her arrival at NASA, thanks to her peppy, kooky outfit that signals unseriousness.

He seizes on the opportunity to make his dreams come true when a colossal reward is posted for the capture of SUM-80 (Deepika Padukone), an escapee from the Complex’s Project K lab, where pregnant women are routinely incinerated after being drained of fluids that can ensure Yaskin’s longevity.

While on the run through a desert wasteland, en route to the rebel enclave known as Shambala, SUM-80 is renamed Sumati by newfound allies and, more important, protected by the now-ancient Ashwatthama (Amitabh Bachchan), who has evolved into an 8-foot-tall sage with superhuman strength, kinda-sorta like Obi-Wan Kenobi on steroids, and a sharp eye for any woman who might qualify as the Mother, the long-prophesized parent of — yes, you guessed it — Kalki.

Bhairava and his droid sidekick Bujji (voiced by Shambala Keerthy Suresh) follow in hot pursuit, and are in turn pursued by an army of storm troopers led by Commander Manas (Saswata Chatterjee), a cherubic-faced Yaskin factotum who always seems to be trying a shade too hard to exude intimidating, butch-level authority. Ashwatthama swats away the storm troopers and their flying vehicles like so many bothersome flies, and exerts only slightly more effort by warding off Bhairava and his high-tech weaponry. (Shoes that enable you to fly do qualify as weaponry, right?)

For his own part, Bhairava has a few magical powers of his own, though it’s never entirely clear what he can or cannot do with them. After a while, it’s tempting to simply assume that, in any given scene, the bounty hunter can do whatever the script requires him to do.

But never mind: He and Ashwatthama do their respective things excitingly well during the marathon of mortal combat that ensues when just about everybody (including Manas and his heavily armed goons) get ready to rumble in Shambala for the climactic clash.

All of which may make “Kalki 2898 AD” sound a great deal more coherent than it actually is. Truth to tell, this is a movie that can easily lead you at some point to just throw up your hands and go with the flow. Or enjoy the rollercoaster ride. And if this really is, as reported, the most expensive motion picture ever produced in India, at least it looks like every penny and more is right there up on the screen.
