Are you in search of an inspiring research environment? Are you looking to improve your scientific and analytical skills to prepare you for a career in social research or academics? The PhD programme at the Vienna School of International Studies might just be what you are looking for! The four-year doctoral programme ‘Interdisciplinary International Studies’ (IIS) is organised in cooperation with the University of Vienna open to graduates who wish to pursue a research project linking at least two of the four disciplines legal studies, political science, international economics and history.

Throughout the programme, doctoral candidates are guided by internationally acclaimed scholars from all over the world, who are dedicated to support our students' academic journeys exploring scientific skills, data collection and analysis as well as academic publications among others.

In addition to that, IIS students have the opportunity to participate in the academic life at the DA through teaching activities, research assistantships and more. The small but vibrant research community at the DA provides PhD students with opportunities to connect with peers in advanced academic positions.

The doctoral programme is built on three modules: Module 1 at the Vienna School of International Studies (“DA”), Module 2 at the University of Vienna (UW) and Module 3 “Disssertation”.

  • For Module 1 (DA), doctoral students are required to complete coursework and sit field examinations in both disciplines. Coursework includes research seminars, workshops, courses relevant for their research topic and extensive reading courses focussing on their research disciplines.
  • For Module 2 (UW), students are required to develop their research project. To complete this module students are expected to hold a colloquium (“faculty public presentation”) to discuss their dissertation prospectus with the dissertation committee to gain approval for the project.
  • Module 3 focuses on research and writing of the doctoral thesis. The primary purpose of PhD study is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of original research in the form of a thesis.

For more detailed information on the PhD IIS programme, please consult the information tabs and documents on this page or contact us. To apply, please visit our application portal at https://application.da-vienna.ac.at .

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Supervision, faculty list of potential reserach supervisors.

Charlott Gebauer (© DA/Peter Lechner)

"There really is no other place like the Diplomatische Akademie Wien; not only is the level of commitment by the students incredible, the academic possibilities are also endless. My favourite part of pursuing my PhD at the DA are my weekly meetings with my supervisor, Professor Patrick Müller, where we not only discuss my project in depth, but all stages and processes related to my PhD. This highlights the level of dedication of my incredible supervisor at the DA. I could not imagine a better place to pursue my PhD!"

Charlott Gebauer 3 rd PhD in IIS programme, Vienna School of International Studies

Colin Hendrickx (© DA/Peter Lechner)

"During the first year of the doctoral programme, classes at both the Vienna School of International Studies and the University of Vienna helped me to broaden and deepen my knowledge of international relations and African studies, and to get to know my fellow students. Furthermore, I was in close contact with my supervisors, who greatly helped me to refine my proposal."

Vanessa Sant’Anna Bonifacio Tavares (© private)

"The first year of the programme has allowed me to come away with an excellent understanding of all of the requisite fundamentals of both international relations theory and international law. The strong and vibrant faculty at the DA was of paramount importance throughout the planning process of my research project."

The Doctoral Program in Mathematics

This page mainly collects legal and organizational information on the doctoral program at the University of Vienna. There is a joint doctoral school of the University of Vienna and the TU Wien, called the Vienna School of Mathematics (VSM). Membership in this school is automatic for students that are hired on a pre-doc position announced via the VSM, for other students, membership is possible upon admission of the advisor.

The current relevant curriculum for a doctoral studies in mathematics is the "Doktoratsstudium der Naturwissenschaften und der technischen Wissenschaften". The current version of the curriculum is available here , but this is mainly for reference (it is in German and mainly contains formal regulations).

The regular duration of the doctoral studies according to the curriculum is 3 years, but this is to be viewed as a guideline. The main formal prerequisite for the doctoral program is a completed master program in mathematics or equivalent background. The prerequisites for the doctoral program will be checked during the admission process, both from a formal and from a scientific point of view. The admission to all programs at the University of Vienna is handled by the central administration of the University and in our case the rules of the curriculum are uniform for all natural sciences. More information on the admission to doctoral programs can be found on this page of the Center for Doctoral Studies , which is the main point of contact concerning admission. In particular, for the admission process, you will need a confirmation of supervision from a faculty member who is capable of supervising PhD theses — so you will have to find an advisor before you can apply for admission. You will also have to provide a description of a PhD project. In our area, a rough description of the direction to be pursued during the doctoral studies usually is sufficient — please check with your (intended) advisor on this.

The doctoral program is structured in three phases, the entry phase , the research phase and the final phase .

  • The purpose of the entry phase is to formulate (jointly with your advisor) a concrete topic or project for your PhD studies. This phase should be completed within a year of starting with a public presentation of the thesis project in front of the Doctoral Advisory Board of the Faculty of Mathematics. Currently, the talks in the presentation are scheduled for 20 minutes with a subsequent discussion of up to 10 minutes. They should be accessible for a broader (mathematical) audience. In preparation, the candidate has to formulate, usually jointly with the supervisor, a research proposal that outlines the project. The aim of this presentation is to show that there is a plan for the project and how this fits into the scientific landscape rather than to provide scientific details. The public presentations take place several times per semester and are widely announced. If you and your supervisor agree that you are getting close to the presentation, please send a mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at containing the names of the student and supervisor(s) as well as a working title for the thesis project, stating that you will be interested in presenting in the near future. This help us in planning presentations and makes sure that you and your advisor will be involved in finding dates, etc. Via the SSC, you will also be informed about the forms needed to register for the presentation.
  • After a successful presentation, the thesis project is formally approved by the DSPL (" Doktoratsstuidenprogrammleiter "), who is the main person responsible for the Doctoral Program. Based on their approval and support of the DSPL, the student and the supervisor(s) formulate and sign a dissertation agreement (" Dissertationsvereinbarung ") that contains the main information about the thesis project. You will be provided with the necessary forms after your successful presentation. The dissertation agreement also contains information about the coursework that has to be completed during the Doctoral Program. Before that agreement is signed, no decision can be made about the acknowledgement of courses. Please consult your supervisor when choosing courses during the entry phase of your studies.
  • Signing the dissertation agreement marks the beginning of the research phase of studies, during which the main academic activities are carried out. Apart from 24 ECTS of course work (for which specifications may be formulated in the dissertation agreement), the main task is the preparation of a monographic thesis. During the research phase, yearly progress reports , which form a part of the dissertation agreement, have to be provided.
  • Completion of the thesis marks the start of the final phase of the doctoral program. If your thesis is getting close to completion, please inform us via mail to ssc.mathematik @ univie.ac.at so that things can be well coordinated as soon as possible. This is also a good time to read the more-detailed information on the final phase that is available here . The student and the supervisor(s) have to suggest three international experts on the topic of the thesis, who agree to take on the role of being  referees . Via the DSPL, this suggestion is passed to the " Studienpräses " of the University of Vienna, who is responsible for the selection of two referees. The referees have to be contacted via the SSC to continue the process of announcing the public defense of the thesis, which is the final step in the doctoral studies that is coordinated via the SSC.

Here are some useful points to reflect on to help you decide which research area might be the best fit for your Ph.D. education:

  • What am I interested in?
  • What is my motivation to do research in this area?
  • Am I willing to work in this area for many years?
  • Do I already have a certain career goal, and if so, how does this area fit into the bigger picture?

If you are not yet familiar with Vienna, we would like to introduce you to our hometown and briefly explain why Vienna is indeed the city of our dreams .

Vienna is not only a great place to work and study, but also a great place to live. Our coffee- house culture and food and entertainment options are world-class. We have a vibrant and dynamic arts and culture scene and are home to the Donauinselfest , the biggest free European open air music festival or the very popular Vienna Ball of Scienes . Have you ever dreamed of hitting the dance floor in a princess dress or tails and dancing the night away? If your answer is yes, then Vienna is right place for you. Where else do you have the opportunity to open a ball in your life or to waltz on a different floor every weekend during the ball season. Do not worry, every ball also has a disco floor, if classical music does not quite meet your taste. In addition, the city offers not only many architectural highlights, but also borders the Vienna Forest, one of the city's many natural leisure areas. Every summer, the banks of the Danube River and the Danube canal attract scores of people who engage in water sports or just hang out on the shore to enjoy the sunset after a long day. There are plenty of great reasons to move to Vienna, but before we give you our top 5, read how Vienna performs in an international context.

Our top 5 reasons why Vienna is one of the best places to live:

1. affordable housing

2. an affordable, modern, and well-functioning public transport network

3. one of the safest major cities in Europe

4. access to high-quality and safe public health and education systems

5. Rich cultural, leisure and sporting opportunities

6.The Viennese forest and the Danube Aupark national park  are all close to the city.

Listen to tunes about the city

Music is a big part of our cultural heritage, so it’s not surprising that there are over 3,000 tunes about Vienna. You can travel musically to Vienna by listening to the perfect song collection on Spotify compiled by the Austrian Tourist Board. Speaking of music, MedUni Vienna organizes an annual graduation ceremony for all its Ph.D. students in the beautiful performance hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus.  The Konzerthaus is, in our opinion, an appropriate place to celebrate the special moment when you’re officially awarded your Ph.D. in the presence of your family and friends.

The podcast " Tell me about Vienna "" takes you on several walks through Vienna and shares many interesting anecdotes about the city and its people. Unfortunately, the podcast is available only in German.

Researcher destination Austria

Another motivation to move to Vienna and start your scientific career here is that Austria has been continuously investing almost 3% of GDP in the area of innovation and research for years. This puts Austria above the EU average and is considered a strong innovator among medium and small enterprises. The result is a very active and creative scientific community and many industrial research institutions that have been founded or established in Austria. Scientists and researchers benefit from e.g. facilitated residence regulations and tax advantages when moving to Austria. We recommend the brochure Researcher's Guide to AUSTRIA to get a very good overview of the Austrian research landscape.

Our campus is located in the middle of Vienna's ninth district and consists of several buildings in the immediate vicinity of our Rectorate. The Rectorate building is directly connected to the AKH (General Hospital). Our university houses 30 university hospitals and two clinical institutes, as well as 13 medical theory centers and numerous highly specialized laboratories . Each of our buildings is easy to reach by public transport or by bike. There are countless opportunities to buy food and drink on campus, including two canteens, a supermarket, and a MedUni Shop with an adjoining café. Parents can have their children looked after in one of our kindergartens. The Medical University of Vienna has been closely connected to the district and its people for centuries and therefore makes its unique collection of teaching materials, models, and instruments available to the public in the Josephinum . The Josephinum was founded in the 17th century as a medical-surgical academy to train military doctors for the Austrian army and is still part of the Medical University. The ninth district is a popular residential area in a central location with green spaces, and a wide range of restaurants, cafes, bars, parks, and sports clubs.

We are always evolving, and so is our campus! Over the next five years, our campus will grow by two more buildings. In addition to the new Eric Kandl Building for Precision Medicine and the Research Centre for Translational Medicine and Therapies , we are also building a state-of-the-art new campus in Mariannengasse . We are already looking forward to welcoming many of our Ph.D. students on the new campus in a few years’ time. Here you can take a look at the new campus and the status of the construction project.

Our campus continues to grow with us and, as a result, has many faces.

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

Investing in the next generation of leaders in medicine and research

A new $1 billion gift from Johns Hopkins alumnus Michael R. Bloomberg will secure graduate financial aid at Johns Hopkins in perpetuity.

The gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies will allow most medical students to attend Hopkins for free and receive support for living expenses as well as provide financial aid for nursing, public health, and other graduate programs to help ensure access for top talent from middle-class and low-income families.

Removing the economic barriers that stand between America’s most promising students from low-income and middle-class families and their dreams of saving lives and making an impact on their communities furthers Bloomberg’s commitment to addressing complex American health challenges and builds on the transformative impact of Bloomberg’s 2018 gift for undergraduate aid at Johns Hopkins University.

Who Qualifies?

  • Yes, 100% of the gift will benefit graduate student financial aid.
  • Undergraduate financial aid was the focus of Michael Bloomberg’s record 2018 contribution of $1.8 billion, which had a transformative impact on our student body. By dramatically expanding scholarship support, Hopkins was able to simultaneously attract the world’s most academically qualified undergraduates and transform the socioeconomic makeup of our undergraduate programs.
  • We believe this current gift, focused on graduate education, will have a similar impact, attracting the best and brightest graduate and medical students, allowing them to pursue their dreams regardless of financial background
  • Michael Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies are longtime supporters of graduate education at Johns Hopkins, having made previous major gifts, particularly in health-related fields where their philanthropy at Hopkins and around the globe has been so impactful.
  • All told, thousands of our undergraduate and graduate students and alumni have benefitted from their generosity, as will generations to come.
  • Each of our graduate divisions has been able to deploy this extraordinary philanthropy to maximum effect for their students.
  • In some cases, the gift has been infused throughout the program already and is fueling the aid packages of current students; in other cases, it is being targeted at the neediest students entering next year’s class in pursuit of one of our flagship degrees.
  • Because we’ve been working on this for several months, we were very lucky to be able to work it into Fall 2024 aid packages, which were sent out by most divisions in April and May.
  • Eligible incoming and returning M.D. students in the School of Medicine will receive updated award notifications on July 8, 2024.
  • Yes, all School of Medicine students, current and future, are included in this program. For example, a current second-year medical student will have the next two years covered if they meet the criteria.
  • No. Financial aid has already completed a review of student financial circumstances and is sending updated award letters to eligible incoming and returning M.D. students on July 8, 2024. Students who qualify for additional financial aid funding will see these award changes reflected in their new award letters. Students will see the new award reflected in their bill for the fall semester no later than Monday, July 15.
  • In many of our other academic divisions, the gift has been infused throughout the program already and is fueling the aid packages of current students. There is no need to apply for this aid as it is automatically considered in the need-based financial aid packages provided by the respective divisions.
  • Yes. The goal of this program is to decrease some of that burden, broaden the group of talented medical students who could attend Hopkins, and ensure that debt is not the driver of the choices our students make around which fields of medicine to practice.
  • The cost of a medical school education, which averages $100k per year (so $400k total), is burdensome to most families.  And very often the students bear this burden by incurring debt.
  • Michael Bloomberg’s record 2018 contribution of $1.8 billion to undergraduate financial aid at Hopkins had a transformative impact on our student body. By dramatically expanding scholarship support, Hopkins was able to simultaneously attract the world’s most academically qualified undergraduates and transform the socioeconomic makeup of our undergraduate programs.
  • We believe this gift will have a similar impact, attracting the best and brightest graduate and medical students, allowing them to pursue their dreams regardless of financial background.

Graduate Accounting Programs celebrates 25 years of developing strategic advisors

Posted on July 8, 2024 by George Vlahakis

phd program vienna

Joe Schroeder, second from left, is the seventh faculty chair of Graduate Accounting Programs.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Kelley School of Business is marking the silver anniversary of Graduate Accounting Programs and the graduation of its first successful alumni.

More than 150 alumni are expected to return to Bloomington for a two-day celebration on July 11-12 at IU Bloomington, which will culminate with a gala dinner at Presidents Hall. Other activities will include coffee and casual meetups and visits to nostalgic spots on and off campus. Registration for the event is now closed.

For a quarter century, Graduate Accounting Programs has presented degree programs that have met the demands and needs of a profession that has evolved from providing accounting, auditing and tax services into one providing a broader range of services.

Many of its 2,265 graduates today help firms to navigate through complex financial challenges and serve as trusted, strategic advisors. Nearly a thousand, 997, have graduated with a master’s degree and another 1,268 have earned a 3/2 MBA degree. Both degrees had their first graduating classes in 1999.

“We used to be focused on practitioner type education and now we’ve pushed forward to creating critical thinkers,” said Joe Schroeder , chairperson of Graduate Accounting Programs, a professor of accounting and PwC Faculty Fellow.

Before 1988, most states only required an undergraduate degree as a prerequisite for Certified Public Accounting licensure. But that year the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants pushed for an increase from 120 credit hours – the number needed complete an undergraduate degree – to 150 credit hours. Over the prior decade, large accounting firms also began moving into consulting.

John Hill , professor emeritus of accounting and Graduate Accounting Programs’ inaugural faculty chair, recalled a meeting he attended in the mid-1980s at Arthur Andersen’s world training center near Chicago, where the firm’s CEO and other senior leaders spoke.

“I have little idea of why I was chosen to attend this meeting, because I was perhaps the most junior professor in the room,” Hill said. “Most sat silent as Andersen’s leaders national audit partner admonished us for not turning out better employees with the following words, ‘If you don’t send me people who can think, I’m going to Bangkok and hire economics majors.’”

Before coming to Kelley in 1986, Hill had served as the vice president of the commercial loan division of the National Bank of Georgia, and as chief financial and administrative officer of another bank. Through his professional experience, he understood what the Andersen executive wanted.

“Perhaps because I had the least professional reputation of anyone in the room to risk, I spoke up along the following lines: ‘If I’m understanding what you are seeking, you want auditors with the requisite cognitive and communications skills to identify problems inside client organizations representing consulting opportunities for your firm, and to communicate those opportunities to both the client and your consultants to facilitate more consulting engagements,” Hill recalled.

“The speaker, who as I recall had avoided stating his desires that precisely, agreed with my brash assessment.”

In 1989, Andersen split to order to establish a consulting firm today known as Accenture. Andersen LLP essentially dissolved in 2005 after its involvement in the Enron scandal. Hill became a vocal advocate for the 150 credit-hour requirement and later worked with a committee of Kelley faculty who established what initially was known as Accounting Graduate Programs. Hill retired in 2010.

Jamie Pratt, center, led the committee that created Graduate Accounting Programs and was its third faculty chair.

A blueprint for success

Jamie Pratt, who later became GAP’s s third faculty chair, led the accounting faculty committee that developed the “blueprints” for a program that from the beginning had an emphasis on cognitive development and leadership skills.

Unlike at other business schools, the Kelley School developed not one, but two, very unique master’s programs in accounting in 1997. From the very beginning, the Accounting MBA (today known as the 3/2 MBA Program ) enabled students to earn an undergraduate degree in accounting and an MBA in five years, proving to be very popular.

Originally, it was a very accounting-focused degree, but today also encompasses many elements of finance. Many students go into specialty consulting and investment banking after graduation.

“The benefits of the 3/2 as designed by Jamie’s committee became obvious over time,” Hill said. “Most business school accounting programs elected to offer a fifth year built around a 4/1 model. In implementing these 4/1 programs, most schools simply added a layer on more-of-the-same accounting courses, which did little to facilitate a significantly more broad-based understanding of business.

“Some in large CPA firms were later to say that result was the antithesis of their intent in pushing 150-hour programs,” he added. “Their disappointment in most accounting programs was a boon for Kelley.”

Adapting to meet rapid changes

A second degree, the Master of Public Accountancy, originally was designed for career switchers, but soon became more rigorous and was renamed the Master of Science in Accounting.

In 2020, in response to rapidly evolving uses of digital technology, it became the Master of Science in Accounting with Data and Analytics degree .

phd program vienna

Leslie Hodder

“As in other professional fields, leading professional services firms increasingly are employing artificial intelligence, robotics, digitization, data and analytics and are requiring our graduates to understand the technologies and methodologies used in today’s highly complex, data‐centric accounting environment,” said Leslie Hodder , the sixth faculty chair of Graduate Accounting Programs.

“Our curriculum has been on the leading edge of these changes and we sought this name change because it more accurately reflects what our program offers today,” added Hodder, who today is a professor of accounting and the David Thompson Chair Professor.

Many graduates of the Master of Science in Accounting with Data and Analytics program go into consulting and traditional accounting, audit and tax practices.

Other faculty chairing Graduate Accounting Programs included David Greene , a Kelley alumnus who returned to teach at the school in 1997 after serving as CFO of Young & Rubicam and other positions at PepsiCo and Phelps Dodge Corporation; Mikel Tiller , a Kelley alumnus who also chaired the accounting department in 1995-98; and Pat Hopkins , currently the vice dean of the Kelley School at Bloomington and Conrad Prebys Professor.

Change remains a constant. With the emergence of artificial intelligence, the accounting profession is at something of a crossroads, said Schroeder, the program’s seventh faculty chair. With the proliferation of data and analytics techniques applications in the business world, integrated accounting, data and analytics competencies are required for the best job placements.

“Future accountants need to be is adaptable and become what I call translators – someone who can have a strong understanding of accounting and what it represents and also have a strong understanding of data analytics and pull information together and see patterns and help companies make decisions,” he said.

“Our programs have evolved into creating problem solvers,” he added. “Through our experiential curriculum, our international immersions, our local field consulting projects and all the different things that we do, we are training them to take undefined problems that people are facing, use their knowledge gained in our programs and then provide meaningful solutions.

“When you come through our curriculum, you’re going to come out more than prepared to start your career and you’re going to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, being a leader in the field of accounting.”
