Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

They enrich our lives, provide a sense of belonging, and enhance our overall wellbeing. As we delve further into this topic, we will uncover the various facets of genuine friendships and the remarkable influence they have on our journey through life.

Join us as we journey through the realms of friendship, appreciating its inherent value, and recognizing its role in shaping our life story.

What is True Friendship?

Friendship is a relationship universally celebrated, crossing cultural, geographic, and age boundaries. But not all friendships are created equal, and those that stand the test of time, weathering all storms, are what we define as ‘true’ friendships. True friendship is an emotional bond marked by mutual respect, understanding, and a shared sense of camaraderie. It’s a connection that enriches our lives and supports our growth, both personally and emotionally.

So, what distinguishes a true friend from a casual acquaintance? Certain qualities set these friendships apart, fostering bonds that remain unbroken, regardless of the challenges life throws their way. Let’s explore these qualities in more depth .

Genuine Support and Understanding

Being there for each other through thick and thin is a cornerstone of true friendship. Friends celebrate our triumphs, cheer us on when we’re striving for goals, and provide comfort during times of struggle. They are our champions in success and our solace in distress.

Empathy is a defining trait of true friendship. True friends have an innate ability to understand and share the feelings of others. They don’t merely sympathize; they empathize, putting themselves in our shoes and experiencing our emotions along with us. This profound understanding cultivates a bond of trust and mutual respect, making true friendship a sanctuary where we feel valued and heard.

Active listening is another key element. A true friend listens attentively, making an effort to understand our feelings and perspectives rather than merely waiting for their turn to speak. This kind of meaningful communication promotes deeper emotional connection and reinforces the bond of friendship.

Loyalty and Reliability

Loyalty and reliability are integral to the definition of true friendship. A loyal friend stands by our side, regardless of the circumstances, never wavering in their support. Their steadfastness acts as a beacon, providing us with a sense of stability and assurance that we’re not alone, no matter what.

Dependability is a trait synonymous with true friendship. Reliable friends keep their promises, stay true to their word, and are there when we need them the most. This trustworthiness builds a sense of security and trust in the relationship, further strengthening the bond.

Consistency is the glue that holds true friendships together. Friends may not be present physically at all times, but they remain a constant emotional presence, lending a sense of continuity and reliability to the relationship.

Acceptance and Authenticity

True friends accept us as we are, quirks, flaws, and all. They celebrate our strengths and help us navigate our weaknesses without judgement. This unconditional acceptance fosters a safe space where we can be our authentic selves without fear of criticism or rejection.

Being genuine and transparent is a hallmark of true friendship. Authentic friends are sincere, honest, and open, not afraid to show vulnerability or express emotions. Their genuineness resonates with us, fostering deeper connections.

A non-judgmental attitude is key in a true friendship. True friends respect our individuality and our right to make decisions, even when they disagree with them. They offer advice when needed but refrain from imposing their beliefs or values. This freedom to be ourselves without judgement further enhances the bond of true friendship.

True friendships, embodying these qualities, provide an enriching experience that transcends ordinary social interaction. These bonds illuminate our lives, offering a blend of companionship, support, and love that’s hard to find elsewhere. In the face of life’s inevitable changes, true friendships are the unchanging constants, the unbreakable bonds that stand strong amidst the chaos. As we navigate life’s journey, these friendships are our anchors, grounding us and reminding us of who we truly are.

The Power of True Friendship

True friendships carry immense power, influencing not only our daily interactions but also shaping our mental health , personal growth, and overall happiness. The influence of these unbreakable bonds permeates various aspects of our lives, reinforcing our resilience and contributing to a robust sense of well-being. Let’s explore the dynamic power of true friendships and their transformative impact.

Impacts on Mental Health and Well-being

True friendships provide a critical support system, particularly in terms of mental health. Friends act as sounding boards, providing empathy and understanding during times of stress , anxiety, or sadness. This emotional support can significantly alleviate mental health issues, promoting a sense of calm and stability.

Additionally, true friends can help us recognize when professional help may be needed, encouraging us to seek therapy or counseling when we may not recognize it ourselves. Thus, the role of true friendships is paramount in fostering a healthy, balanced mental state.

Nurturing Personal Growth and Development

Personal growth and development is another area where true friendships cast a significant influence. Friends challenge us, push us out of our comfort zones, and inspire us to reach new heights. By celebrating our successes and providing constructive criticism during failures, they foster an environment conducive to personal development.

Furthermore, friends provide diverse perspectives, enabling us to view situations from various angles and broaden our understanding of the world. This exposure to different viewpoints encourages intellectual growth, enhancing our problem-solving skills and ability to empathize with others.

Enhancing Overall Happiness and Resilience

True friendships contribute greatly to our overall happiness . Shared experiences, laughter, and memories create a rich tapestry of joy that enhances our lives. Moreover, the knowledge that we have a reliable support system in our corner boosts our confidence and self-esteem, leading to greater overall happiness.

Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is another attribute nurtured by true friendships. Friends provide emotional support during tough times, helping us cope with life’s challenges. Their presence fosters resilience, enabling us to navigate difficult situations with increased strength and positivity.

In conclusion, the power of true friendship is profound, significantly impacting our mental health, personal growth, happiness, and resilience. These unbreakable bonds, characterized by mutual respect, understanding, and support, are indeed a life-enhancing blessing, an essence of life worth cherishing.

Nurturing and Maintaining True Friendships

True friendships are akin to a flourishing garden; they require nurturing, maintenance, and a consistent investment of time and effort. These bonds, built on mutual respect and trust, are cultivated through effective communication and a shared commitment to the relationship. Let’s delve into the principles that underpin the nurturing and maintaining of true friendships.

Effective Communication and Open Dialogue

Clear, open communication forms the foundation of true friendships. It involves expressing feelings honestly, listening attentively, and maintaining an open dialogue about shared experiences and individual perspectives. Effective communication fosters understanding, strengthens the bond, and ensures that both parties feel valued and heard.

Cultivating Mutual Trust and Respect

Trust and respect are paramount in true friendships. These bonds thrive on mutual trust, built on sincerity, reliability, and confidentiality. Respect, on the other hand, acknowledges individuality, appreciates differences, and fosters a non-judgmental atmosphere. Cultivating these twin pillars strengthens friendship and enhances its longevity.

Investing Time and Effort in the Relationship

Friendships require an investment of time and effort to sustain and deepen the bond. This might involve regular communication, spending quality time together, and actively participating in each other’s lives. Such investments serve to strengthen the connection and reinforce the mutual commitment to the friendship.

Quality Over Quantity

Understanding the value of true friendships often means focusing on quality over quantity. A few deep, meaningful relationships can be more fulfilling and enriching than numerous superficial acquaintances. This involves cultivating deeper connections based on shared values, mutual understanding, and shared experiences.

Managing expectations is another key aspect of this principle. Recognizing that every friendship is unique and setting realistic expectations about the level of commitment, communication, and mutual support can prevent misunderstandings and foster healthier relationships.

Being a True Friend

The essence of true friendship lies in reciprocity. Being a true friend means reciprocating the support, understanding, and appreciation that we seek in our friends. It involves being present and available, not just in times of crisis, but also in everyday moments.

Supporting friends, celebrating their achievements, and showing appreciation for their presence in our lives can greatly enhance the bond. It sends a clear message of love and respect, strengthening the connection and reinforcing the value we place on the friendship.

In conclusion, nurturing and maintaining true friendships is a dynamic, ongoing process that involves open communication, mutual trust and respect, and a genuine investment of time and effort. The journey, while requiring commitment, is profoundly rewarding, resulting in bonds that enrich our lives and stand the test of time.

Recognizing Toxic Friendships

While true friendships offer enriching experiences and emotional support, it’s crucial to recognize when a friendship becomes toxic and detrimental to our well-being. Identifying red flags early on can help us take the necessary steps to address the situation and, if needed, sever the ties that are causing harm. Let’s discuss how to recognize toxic friendships, their impact on well-being, and when to consider letting go.

Identifying Red Flags

Toxic friendships often involve consistent patterns of negative behavior. Some red flags may include one-sided relationships, where the give-and-take is imbalanced; manipulation or control; incessant criticism or belittlement; betrayal of trust; or lack of respect for personal boundaries. These behaviors can gradually erode the foundation of a friendship and should not be ignored.

The Impact of Toxic Friendships on Well-being

Toxic friendships can significantly impact our mental and emotional well-being. They often breed negativity, causing stress, anxiety, and a decrease in self-esteem. Over time, these friendships can lead to feelings of frustration, sadness, or isolation, impacting our overall happiness and potentially causing long-term damage to our mental health.

Deciding When to Let Go

Letting go of a toxic friendship is a personal decision and often a challenging one. If a friendship consistently drains you, makes you feel bad about yourself, or affects your mental health negatively, it might be time to consider letting go.

It’s important to communicate your feelings first, providing the friend an opportunity to address and rectify the issues. However, if negative patterns persist despite communication and efforts to change, stepping away from the friendship might be the best course of action.

Remember, it’s essential to prioritize your mental and emotional health . While it can be painful to end a friendship, sometimes it’s the healthiest choice to make. Releasing toxic ties can open up space for more positive relationships and experiences, leading to enhanced well-being and personal growth.

In conclusion, recognizing toxic friendships is an integral aspect of nurturing healthy relationships . Being aware of the red flags and the negative impacts on well-being enables us to make informed decisions about when to let go, paving the way for more fulfilling, supportive, and enriching connections.

Celebrating True Friendship

True friendships, the unbreakable bonds that enrich our lives, are indeed worth celebrating. Expressing gratitude, creating shared memories, and marking milestones and achievements are some of the ways we can appreciate and honor these precious relationships. In this part, we’ll explore how to celebrate true friendships and foster deeper connections .

Expressing Gratitude

An important aspect of celebrating true friendship is expressing gratitude. A simple ‘thank you’ can go a long way in acknowledging the love, support, and understanding that true friends offer. It can be a personal note, a heartfelt conversation, or even a token of appreciation. Expressing gratitude not only strengthens the bond but also reinforces the positive elements of the friendship.

Creating Meaningful Memories Together

Shared experiences and memories form the bedrock of true friendships. Whether it’s an adventure-filled trip, a quiet evening of heartfelt conversations, or a shared hobby or passion, these experiences create lasting memories. Investing time in creating these shared moments can greatly enhance the connection, adding depth and richness to the friendship.

Celebrating Milestones and Achievements

Recognizing and celebrating each other’s milestones and achievements is another significant way of honoring true friendships. Whether it’s a career advancement, a personal accomplishment, or even overcoming a challenging phase, celebrating these moments together conveys support, pride, and admiration.

Moreover, it emphasizes the shared journey and mutual growth, enhancing the sense of camaraderie and deepening the bond. Celebrating together also creates joyous memories, adding to the repository of shared experiences that characterize true friendships.

In conclusion, celebrating true friendship is an enriching experience that can significantly deepen the bond. It involves recognizing the value of the relationship, creating shared memories, and rejoicing in each other’s achievements. As we celebrate these unbreakable bonds, we enrich our own lives, fostering connections that offer support, understanding, and shared joy.

The journey through the varied facets of true friendship underlines the beauty and significance these relationships hold in our lives. These unbreakable bonds, formed on the foundations of mutual respect, understanding, and shared experiences, serve as anchors, providing us with support, joy, and a sense of belonging. As we conclude, let’s reflect on the ways to nurture and cherish these special connections that can last a lifetime.

The beauty of true friendship lies in its authenticity. It is a bond that transcends surface-level interactions, delving into a realm of deep understanding, mutual respect, and shared growth. Each true friendship in our life adds a unique flavor, enhancing our life experience with its individual dynamics.

However, like any meaningful relationship, these friendships need nurturing. Open communication, mutual respect, and consistent investment of time and effort are vital to maintaining these relationships. Celebrating shared memories and milestones, expressing gratitude, and being there for each other in times of need are ways to cherish these bonds.

Moreover, it’s essential to recognize when a friendship turns toxic and learn to let go when necessary, prioritizing our mental and emotional well-being. This balance of nurturing healthy relationships and acknowledging unhealthy ones is a crucial aspect of managing our social connections.

In a world that often emphasizes romantic and familial relationships, let’s not forget the profound impact of true friendships. These relationships, often forged by choice rather than obligation or blood ties, offer a unique blend of companionship, understanding, and shared growth. They are indeed unbreakable bonds that can last a lifetime, enriching our existence with their unwavering presence.

As we continue on our individual journeys, let’s carry forward the essence of true friendship, nurturing these relationships that not only offer companionship but also help shape our lives. May we always find joy in these unbreakable bonds and cherish the warmth, support, and understanding they bring into our lives.

The Importance of Friendship

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life..

  • Finding friends can be challenging but can be often achieved by approaching others with mutual interests.

As we move through life, we find that there are many things out of our control. We can’t choose our parents, our genetics , or control the things that happen in the world around us. One thing that we can control is who our friends are, and this decision can either make our lives so much richer and beautiful, or more stressful and disappointing. Today we’ll focus on how to choose friends who enrich our lives and make them more beautiful.

Why friends are so important

Having solid friendships is important for two main reasons. First, they make life more enjoyable. We get to share the beautiful aspects of life with people who we love, which can enrich our everyday experiences. Second, our friends help us through the difficult times. Having friends to support us through hard times can make unimaginably difficult situations seem more tolerable.

The most beautiful part about pouring our time and energy into friendships is that not only do friends help enrich our lives, but we enrich theirs too! Friendships get us through the tough times in life, make things more fun and enjoyable, and all-around make our lives better. I urge you to take stock of your friendships and ask yourself if your current friends people build you up and support you, or is the friendship more one-sided?

As we explore friendships today, these are also inclusive of our partners. I believe that the foundation for any healthy relationship is friendship. So it’s important to group our romantic partners into this conversation too.

So, where do we find friends? This might sound silly, but finding friends can be challenging! When I first moved to California for my Ph.D., I didn’t have any friends out here. There were quite a few people in my program that I enjoyed spending time with. But, towards the end of school, they became very busy and were no longer able to dedicate time to hang out anymore. Thankfully, through the help of a very good therapist, I learned that it was important to enjoy life instead of striving for excellence all of the time. As a result, I learned how important it was to carve out time in my life for friends.

Unfortunately, the people I had dedicated time to thus far were achievement-oriented and were pouring their time into work and not our friendships. This forced me to seek out other ways to form connections with people. I ended up finding a local hiking group with the hopes of meeting people with similar interests. During one of these hikes, I met Jim, one of my best friends to this day.

We became instant friends. We have continued to support each other over the years, and even more importantly, we always make time for one another. We both view the friendship as one that makes each other’s lives better, therefore it’s always worth the time and energy. The backbone of any successful friendship is one where both sides put in equal effort and support.

Both Jim and I were forced to put in more effort when he moved across the country to the East Coast. Because we already had such a strong foundation, this didn’t impact our friendship. We talk all of the time and see each other several times a year. We make the relationship a priority no matter what coast each other is on. Like anything in life that is valuable to us, we must work at it and put time and effort into it.

When it's time to move on from a friendship

The second part of the friendship discussion can be a difficult one — reassessing your current friendships and potentially moving on from friends who don’t add value to your life.

Two of my best friends from high school went down different paths from me. We still keep in contact, but I don’t spend too much time with them anymore. The supporting, loving part of our relationship wasn’t there anymore, so it was no longer worth putting energy into maintaining a friendship that had changed so much.

This may be a story you can relate to. What I hope you take away from this post is this — friendships take energy, time, and commitment. And if you’re putting your time and energy into someone who isn’t enriching your life and giving you the support you need, it may be time to reevaluate that friendship.

essay on the true friendship

If you find yourself in the market for friends (who isn’t?) I recommend you find groups or activities that you genuinely enjoy. This way you’ll have the opportunity to connect with people who have similar interests. And once you’re there, take a risk! Talk to people, exchange contact information, and follow up with them. It may feel scary at first, but the reward outweighs the momentary uncomfortable feeling you may have.

Friendship and dating

In many ways, the most important friendship in our lives is the one we have with our romantic partners. The first criteria we should look for in this partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to us, meaning that they are kind, positive, loving, and supportive. If we’re dating someone and they’re a jerk, it’s probably safe to assume that they’re not a good friend. To avoid this, I recommend seeking out someone who is a good friend first, i.e. before the romance and sexual stuff gets in the way.

When there are bumps in a friendship or a romantic relationship , it’s important to work through those tough times. The tricky part is that it will take two people to fix that issue. We can only control our actions and hold ourselves accountable, but we cannot control our friend or our partner's reaction. In addition to our own actions, we have control over the friends or partners that we choose in the first place. If we prioritize choosing good people who we can trust will work through issues with us, then we can work through anything.

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life. It’s so important that we surround ourselves with people who we have fun with, who support us, and people who make us better. You may already have beautiful friendships in your life, but if you’re still in the market for friends, it’s never too late to cultivate new relationships that will make your life even more magnificent.

What Is True Friendship?

Friendship is often defined as a relationship of mutual affection, platonic intimacy, and care between individuals. Like other relationships we have, including with family or romantic partners, friendship may have challenges. “Real” or "True” friendship can be terms used to describe healthy relationships between two or more friends. As healthy relationships contribute to mental health, many individuals may wonder how to cultivate this type of friendship.

Healthy friendships may be long-term bonds between those with healthy boundaries, mutual respect for one another, and positive intentions. Unhealthy friendships might be formed from a desire for money, status, or another external reason. For the most part, a healthy friend is someone who respects your boundaries, remains trustworthy, and shows you empathy.

True friendship explained

What is true friendship? Several factors might go into a healthy friendship connection, including the following.

True friends can show empathy to each other. Empathy is an experience of feeling the emotions of others or being able to put yourself in their shoes. By empathizing with someone, you can see why a particular situation or subject may matter to them. In a friendship, empathy might look like offering moral support during difficult times, actively listening when someone talks about their feelings, or understanding when a friend makes an honest mistake.

Someone seeking friendship with others for impure motives might struggle to feel empathy. Friends who end connections with others due to minor mistakes or inconveniences may also see friends as disposable.

Trustworthiness

The more you spend time with someone, the more you might get to know them. Over time, you'll often learn their behavioral patterns or how they treat you and other people. Being trustworthy is one of the important qualities of a good friend . A true friend will likely not betray you, disregard your limits, or make you question yourself. They may support you when they're able, try to remain open in communication, and stick to their word.

Mutual respect

Real friends are usually ones that have mutual respect for one another. Although both parties may not always agree, they could still admire each other and believe they're both doing their best and acting out of positive intentions. Close friends may argue or disagree at times. However, disrespect might include behaviors like:

  • Disregarding one friend's boundaries
  • Being passive aggressive or giving the “silent treatment”
  • Abandonment
  • Making light of physical illnesses
  • Cruel jokes
  • Being late to most scheduled hangouts
  • Peer pressure

Elements of friendship

In most cases, true friendship requires empathy, trustworthiness, and mutual respect. How someone acts when they see someone else succeeding or failing can indicate how they feel about the relationship. True friends may continue to be in your life through struggles and gains as long as the relationship is healthy.

When you're in the company of a real friend, you might feel comfortable and at ease. Frequently unpleasant emotions in the company of a specific individual could indicate an underlying issue.

Healthy friends might also allow you to have other friends and connections. Although possessiveness might be associated with unhealthy romances, friends could also demand complete fidelity. However, connecting and building friendships with more than one person can be normal.

How friends behave around others in their lives

How one behaves around the people in their life might show how they would act as a friend. An individual who gossips, spreads rumors, or complains about friends in their absences might do the same with you. In many cases, it can be unhealthy to simply accept this behavior or continue associating with that individual.

How to find healthy friends

Finding trustworthy and safe friends can feel challenging if you have previously experienced unhealthy relationships. However, it may be possible. There are a few ways you can try to make healthy friends, including:

  • Attending a social group at school, on campus, or at work
  • Talking to coworkers at your place of employment
  • Connecting with like-minded individuals in an online social group
  • Talking to those who seem to have made healthy efforts in their lives
  • Avoiding those who seem to discard friends often
  • Going to a platonic blind dating event
  • Meeting people at an event like pride, the farmer's market, or a fair
  • Asking your current friends for recommendations
  • Attending university
  • Joining a volunteer organization
  • Going on a group trip

You may find unhealthy people in any situation. However, set boundaries and use your judgment to determine who might be a healthy choice to connect with. You do not have to stay friends with someone hurting you or acting unhealthily with others in their life.

Therapy options

Speaking with a counselor or therapist may be beneficial if you want to determine whether your friendship is healthy or learn how to make new friends. A therapist may be able to give you advice regarding your friendships or other relationships you are confused about. If you live with social anxiety or struggle to make time to meet with a therapist, you might also benefit from online therapy, which allows you to choose a schedule that works for you.

Online therapy has been proven to be as effective as in-person therapy for many symptoms, mental health conditions, and concerns. You can choose whether to meet with your online counselor via video, phone, or live chat sessions, and you can message them after sessions if you have any questions.

Online platforms like BetterHelp can be beneficial if you struggle to find a therapist in your area.

Writing a friendship essay is an excellent way to reflect on your relationships with other people, show your appreciation for your friends, and explore what friendship means to you. What you include in your paper is entirely up to you, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t structure it properly. Here is our advice on structuring an essay on friendship:

  • Begin by selecting the right topic. It should be focused and creative so that you can earn a high mark. Think about what friendship means to you and write down your thoughts. Reflect on your relationship with your best friend and see if you can write an essay that incorporates these themes. If these steps didn’t help – don’t worry! Fortunately, there are many web resources that can help you choose. Browse samples of friendship essays online to see if there are any topics that interest you.
  • Create a title that reflects your focus. Paper titles are important because they grasp the reader’s attention and make them want to read further. However, many people find it challenging to name their work, so you can search for friendship essay titles online if you need to.
  • Once you get the first two steps right, you can start developing the structure of your essay. An outline is a great tool because it presents your ideas in a clear and concise manner and ensures that there are no gaps or irrelevant points. The most basic essay outline has three components: introduction, body, and conclusion. Type these out and move to the next step. Compose an introduction. Your introduction should include a hook, some background information, and a thesis. A friendship essay hook is the first sentence in the introduction, where you draw the reader’s attention. For instance, if you are creating an essay on value of friendship, include a brief description of a situation where your friends helped you or something else that comes to mind. A hook should make the reader want to read the rest of the essay. After the hook, include some background information on your chosen theme and write down a thesis. A thesis statement is the final sentence of the first paragraph that consists of your main argument.
  • Write well-structured body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should start with one key point, which is then developed through examples, references to resources, or other content. Make sure that each of the key points relates to your thesis. It might be useful to write out all of your key points first before you write the main body of the paper. This will help you to see if any of them are irrelevant or need to be swapped to establish a logical sequence. If you are composing an essay on the importance of friendship, each point should show how a good friend can make life better and more enjoyable. End each paragraph with a concluding sentence that links it to the next part of the paper.
  • Finally, compose a conclusion. A friendship essay conclusion should tie together all your points and show how they support your thesis. For this purpose, you should restate your thesis statement at the beginning of the final paragraph. This will offer your reader a nice, well-balanced closure, leaving a good impression of your work.

Epicurus: Beyond Pleasure, Embracing the Alchemy of True Friendship

This essay is about the profound insights of Epicurus into the significance of genuine friendship, beyond the pursuit of individual pleasure. In weaving a philosophical tapestry, Epicurus emphasizes enduring joy found in deep connections, challenging societal norms focused on fleeting desires. Friendship, elevated as an art form, becomes a transformative force, contributing to a contented and fulfilling life. Epicurus advocates for quality friendships based on trust and shared values, offering sanctuaries for authentic expression. These relationships, according to his philosophy, foster moral support and emotional resilience, enriching both individual lives and the broader social fabric. The essay underscores Epicurus’ disruption of conventional notions, recognizing the innate human need for connection. While individual pleasure remains crucial, Epicurus posits that the highest joy emerges from shared experiences and genuine connections forged through friendship. In embracing this communal dimension of pleasure, individuals discover a wellspring of fulfillment that transcends individualistic pursuits. In essence, Epicurus invites us to appreciate the alchemy of genuine connections, guiding us toward a life illuminated by enduring joy, shared tranquility, and profound fulfillment.

How it works

Within the vast expanse of philosophical contemplation, Epicurus stands as a beacon, not only for his exploration of pleasure and tranquility but also for his profound insights into the alchemy of genuine friendship. In the tapestry of his philosophical discourse, the significance of social bonds emerges as a luminous thread, weaving through the fabric of Epicurean wisdom.

Epicurus, the sage of antiquity, propounds a philosophy that transcends the mere pursuit of individual pleasure. While pleasure remains a focal point, the essence lies in the communal dance of authentic connections.

Friendship, in Epicurean doctrine, is not relegated to the periphery but occupies a central space in the narrative of a contented and fulfilling life.

The crux of Epicurus’ philosophy extends beyond the ephemeral allure of superficial pleasures. Rather, he underscores the enduring joy found in cultivating deep, trustworthy friendships. True friends, in Epicurean terms, become pillars of support, fountains of solace, and co-creators of shared moments of bliss.

In a world often intoxicated by the pursuit of material gain and transient gratifications, Epicurus disrupts the prevailing narrative. Instead of chasing fleeting desires, his philosophy encourages the investment of time and energy in the cultivation of profound connections with others. Friendship, elevated to an art form, becomes a transformative force, elevating existence beyond the limits of individual pursuits.

Epicurus introduces a nuanced understanding of friendship, advocating for quality over quantity. He champions friendships founded on trust, shared values, and genuine understanding. True friends, in this paradigm, offer a sanctuary where authenticity thrives without the shackles of judgment or pretense. Such relationships contribute not just to personal tranquility but also enhance the broader social landscape.

Friendship, in Epicurean thought, transcends the superficial layers of social interaction. It evolves into a source of moral fortitude and emotional resilience. True friends, according to Epicurus, share the tapestry of joys and sorrows, contributing to a harmonious existence marked by authentic connections. In nurturing such meaningful bonds, individuals not only enrich their lives but also become architects of a positive communal narrative.

Epicurus challenges the conventional notion of self-sufficiency, recognizing the innate human need for connection. While individual pleasure remains a paramount pursuit, Epicurus contends that the zenith of joy often emerges from shared experiences and genuine connections forged through friendship. This communal dimension of pleasure, he asserts, becomes a wellspring of fulfillment that transcends individualistic confines.

In summation, Epicurus beckons us to look beyond the surface of pleasure, unveiling the transformative potential of authentic friendship. In a realm where he sought to unravel the intricacies of human existence, Epicurus extends an invitation to acknowledge the alchemical power of genuine connections. The art of friendship, in his philosophy, ceases to be a mere component of life; instead, it becomes an elemental force that enriches the human experience. Through genuine connections, Epicurus guides us towards a life illuminated by enduring joy, shared tranquility, and the profound fulfillment that arises from cultivating meaningful relationships.

11 qualities of a good friend & ways to be an even better one.

Lia Miller, M.A., MPA, MSW

One of the most important and formative types of relationships you will experience in a lifetime is friendship. Friends are people you can share intimacies and experiences with, and you are an important part of each other's lives. They give you a sense of belonging and security knowing you are loved and cherished by the people you most care for.

The beauty of friendship is that you get to choose your friends, unlike with family. But anyone who's ever had a negative experience with someone they thought was a friend can probably attest to the fact that it isn't always easy to spot true friendship. So we spoke with mental health experts Chaute Thompson, LMHC, and Jinnie Cristerna, LCSW, Rh.D., CHt, about what exactly makes someone a good friend and some tips on how to be a good friend yourself.

What makes a good friend?

Of all the traits a good friend could have, honesty is certainly among the most important. An honest friend is someone who can and will tell you the truth instead of lying to you to keep you happy or placate you. A good friend will tell you the truth even if it's hard, Cristerna says, because they love you.

Being nonjudgmental

A nonjudgmental friend makes you feel confident in and loved for who you are and not someone who instills self-doubt or insecurity in you. Nonjudgmental friends listen to you and do their best to see things from your point of view.

True friends accept you even when your lives move in different directions. True friends understand that your choices are yours and accept those decisions because they know that what's right for them isn't necessarily right for you.

Trustworthiness

Trust lets us feel safe with friends—safe to be vulnerable and to share our plans, our true selves, and our lives. A trustworthy friend keeps your secrets, keeps their promises, and is dependable.

Low-maintenance

Many longtime friends point to the fact that when they haven't been in touch for a while and finally reconnect, it is as if no time has passed. In other words, friends shouldn't require all of your attention all of the time and understand when life gets busy.

Tips for how to be a good friend:

Prioritize making time for each other..

Free time is sacred because we don't have much of it. At the same time, friendships grow through shared experiences and quality time together. The mark of a good friend is someone who makes time for you and makes spending time with you a priority. A good friend will also look for opportunities to maximize the time you have together by seeking fun and unique experiences that strengthen and maintain your bond.

Open up and allow each other to be vulnerable.

A good friend is someone genuine, someone with whom you can be yourself and they can be themselves around you, Cristerna explains. A good friend allows you to be vulnerable with them and vice versa, meaning you can expose your emotions and circumstances with each other and trust one another to listen, be supportive, and have each other's best interests at heart.

"Being able to have fun and share special memories are the result of having a trusting relationship that feels safe," Cristerna adds. "For example, all of my friends and I have an understanding that we support one another in every way (yes, even ridiculous ways!), unless the level of ridiculousness is too much or would create a situation where we feel uncomfortable."

Pay attention to the little things.

"A good friend is able to read between the lines of what's being said because they pay attention, and they know your heart," Thompson says. "For example, if I ask, 'How are you doing?' to a close friend and the response is 'OK,' I know immediately that she is not OK. A good friend pays attention to the details because you care to take the time to understand the heart of your friend."

Be willing to challenge each other.

A good friend pushes you to grow, will let you know when you are on the wrong path, and will "challenge you when you need to be challenged," says Thompson. And this is "all done in love and with respect." In this way, you can grow together and support each other along the way.

"In a personal story, I was angry with someone, and one of my good friends stopped me midway through my rant and said, 'Jinnie, you know you're wrong. I am always with you, but on this one, I can't ride with ya. Stop and think about the role you played in this.' That moment stays with me to this day because she loved me enough to tell me to knock it off, and it came from a place of love. I was able to receive it because of that," Cristerna explains. "That's what friends do."

But be open-minded.

To be a good friend, you have to be open-minded, says Thompson. Being open-minded allows your friend to be their true selves, especially when they are making decisions. By remaining open-minded and not inserting your own biases into your friend's decision-making, you demonstrate that you are understanding and supportive.

"Good friends support us, give us space to be ourselves and make mistakes, and they respect boundaries," Cristerna adds.

Look out for them.

"A good friend is a courageous friend who will stand up and do the right thing when no one is looking and even if it doesn't benefit them. This may not be the type of definition most people have about courage, but trust me—it takes a lot of courage to do this," Cristerna says.

For example, you might find yourself in situations where other people aren't treating your friend well or where you know your friend may be put in a sticky situation. As much as possible, a good friend is willing to stick their neck out on behalf of their friends, whether that means shutting down gossip about them, making sure they get home safe after a night out, or something else.

What about bad friends?

Here are some signs of an unhealthy friendship, according to Thompson:

  • You feel drained whenever you talk to them.
  • The friendship is one-sided, meaning every time you talk to them or try to share with them, somehow the conversation turns around and goes back to them.
  • They aren't making time to listen to you or allow space for your contributions to the conversation.
  • Your time or boundaries are not being respected.
  • They don't respect your feelings.
  • You often feel belittled by them.
  • You feel overly reliant on each other, a hallmark of codependent friendship .

Friendship entails reciprocity and respect, Cristerna adds. Without these two qualities, the relationship will be limited and fizzle over time. When you are in what feels like a toxic friendship or codependent friendship, it is best to determine what is the healthiest way for you to end the friendship .

In communicating the need to end the friendship, you want to ensure that you own the decision and be clear about how the relationship does and doesn't work for you. This is not the time to blame, however—in fact, this is a time to forgive and ask for forgiveness with grace and ease. Ending a friendship is already hard enough. Cristerna recommends trying to be compassionate, so if you cross paths again (and you usually do), you can say hello and catch up in a comfortable and natural way.

The bottom line.

A true friendship is defined by knowing someone has your back, no matter what. A good friend will watch out for you and ensure you are safe, feel supported, and are loved. A good friend will never purposely lead you into making decisions or taking actions that aren't good for you. A true friend will always have your best interests at heart.

Here's more on how to deepen adult friendships and how to create a lasting friendship .

Who Cares if Supreme Court Justices Get Along?

An illustration of six justices cavorting in black robes. One holds a gift basket with a banner reading, “All is well.”

By Linda Greenhouse

Ms. Greenhouse, the recipient of a 1998 Pulitzer Prize, reported on the Supreme Court for The Times from 1978 to 2008 and was a contributing Opinion writer from 2009 to 2021.

The Supreme Court is hurting.

I can say that with confidence — not based on any inside information but on the external evidence of how hard some of the justices are working to show that everyone on the court really does get along.

“When we disagree, our pens are sharp, but on a personal level, we never translate that into our relationship with one another,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor told an audience at the National Governors Association conference in February. “We don’t raise our voices, no matter how hot-button the case is,” Justice Amy Coney Barrett said at the civics forum at George Washington University in March.

The retired justice Stephen Breyer, on the talk circuit for his new book on constitutional interpretation, has been making the same point. In a guest essay in The Times this month, he observed that “justices who do not always agree on legal results nonetheless agree to go to hockey games or play golf together.” He added: “The members of the court can and do get along well personally. That matters.”

I’m reminded of the last time the court made a concerted effort to assure the public that all was well. It was during the weeks that followed the ruling that clinched the 2000 presidential election for George W. Bush. With the court in recess, justices who had voted on either side of that 5-to-4 decision, Bush v. Gore, scattered around the country and the world (Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg went to Australia), taking the occasion of previously scheduled lectures to claim that the court was not in crisis.

Justice Ginsburg and Justice Antonin Scalia, bitterly opposed in that case and in a good many others, let it be known that they had kept up their tradition of New Year’s Eve dinner together with their spouses. “The justices are behaving almost like survivors of a natural disaster who need to talk about what happened in order to regain their footing and move on,” I wrote at the time.

Now, by contrast, there is no single issue, no giant iceberg that the court has struck, but rather separate disconcerting developments that have noticeably dented the court’s once secure public standing.

Was it the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision that erased the constitutional right to abortion and upended state politics in much of the country? The astonishing leak of a draft of the Dobbs decision, which Justice Clarence Thomas called “tremendously bad” and destabilizing for the court? The controversy over the court’s seeming inability to bind itself to a judicial ethics code? The abrupt emergence of a conservative supermajority flexing its muscles so forcefully that Justice Barrett, before reaching her first anniversary on the court, felt driven to declare publicly that “this court is not composed of a bunch of partisan hacks”?

It may be a bit of each of these or none of them, but the inventory itself suggests that what matters is what the court does or doesn’t do: that the legacy of the Roberts court will reside in the pages of United States Reports, the official compilation of Supreme Court decisions, and not in the justices’ datebooks. What counts is not how the justices treat one another but how they treat the claims of those who come before them.

I’m still shaking my head, for example, over a decision from several terms ago that stripped two laywomen, teachers in elementary parochial schools, of the protection of federal anti-discrimination laws because, the 7-to-2 majority held, they were effectively “ministers” who fell under a rule the court adopted eight years earlier called the ministerial exception to ordinary civil laws. The women had no substantial religious training. One did not have her contract renewed after she revealed that she needed time off for treatment of breast cancer. The Americans With Disabilities Act did her no good. By the time the court decided the case, she had died.

Few people remember that decision from only four years ago, Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru, which cast thousands of lay employees of religious organizations out from a federal safety net intended for all. I mention it only to underscore the ongoing need to watch what the court does, not how the justices feel.

The Supreme Court and other appellate courts are categorized in the judicial literature as collegial courts. “Collegial” in that usage is a term of art. It doesn’t mean that the judges necessarily get along. It means that these multimember courts act as collectives, when a majority coalesces. In a forthcoming memoir, “Vision,” Judge David Tatel, who recently retired from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, offers as good a definition of judicial collegiality as I have seen. “Judicial collegiality,” he writes, “has nothing to do with singing holiday songs, having lunch or attending basketball games together. It has everything to do with respecting each other, listening to each other and sometimes even changing our minds.”

Years ago, Mark Alan Stamaty used a “Washingtoon,” his cartoon that ran regularly in The Washington Post, to depict the Supreme Court justices walking in single file, each carrying a bundle. “The Supreme Court Goes to the Laundromat” was the title. I thought it was so funny that I kept it for years tacked to the New York Times cubicle in the Supreme Court pressroom. It portrayed, to be sure, a collegial Supreme Court.

But it was a cartoon.

A Guide to Taylor Swift Songs Inspired by Her Friends: ‘Fifteen,’ ’22’ and More

A Guide to Taylor Swift Songs Inspired by Her Friends

Relationships may be the inspiration behind much of Taylor Swift ’s music, but her friendships have served as the source behind some of her biggest hits.

Swift is known for her many famous friendships, forming strong bonds with stars such as Selena Gomez , Ed Sheeran and Emma Stone . However, Swift revealed in a March 2019 essay for Elle that navigating friendships in the public eye has its ups and downs.

“In my twenties, I found myself surrounded by girls who wanted to be my friend,” she shared, noting that she wasn’t “popular as a kid” before making it big. “So I shouted it from the rooftops, posted pictures, and celebrated my newfound acceptance into a sisterhood, without realizing that other people might still feel the way I did when I felt so alone. It’s important to address our long-standing issues before we turn into the living embodiment of them.”

She also addressed that not all friendships are ones that will last the test of time. “It’s sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships,” Swift stated. “You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you’ll always keep the memories.”

Keep scrolling to see which of Swift’s songs were inspired by her friendships:

‘I’m Only Me When I’m With You’ ( Taylor Swift ): Abigail Anderson

While the track can be interpreted as Swift expressing her love for a partner, it is rumored to be about her longtime friendship with her high school bestie. Anderson is even featured heavily throughout the song’s music video , which is comprised of home video clips of Swift hanging out with friends, family and her bandmates on tour.

“I’m only up when you’re not down / Don’t wanna fly if you’re still on the ground /It’s like no matter what I do,” Swift sings in the song’s chorus. “Well, you drive me crazy half the time / The other half, I’m only trying’ to let you know that what I feel is true / And I’m only me when I’m with you.”

‘Fifteen’ ( Fearless ): Abigail Anderson

Swift makes a direct reference to her friendship with Anderson in the Fearless track, in which she sings about her freshman year of high school. “You sit in class next to a redhead named Abigail / And soon enough, you’re best friends,” the lyrics state.

’22’ ( Red ): Selena Gomez, Dianna Agron and More

The song’s positive themes about having fun with friends was allegedly inspired by many of Swift’s close pals. According to Genius , the album booklet features a hidden message which spells out the names Ashley, Dianna, Claire and Selena. Swifites were quick to realize the message was a shout-out to the singer’s friends: Ashley Avignone , Dianna Agron , Claire Kislinger and Gomez.

‘You Are in Love’ ( 1989 ): Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff

Swift previously admitted that she wrote this romantic 1989 track about Dunham and Antonoff’s relationship . (The song was released four years before the pair ended their five-year romance in 2018.)

“I remember sitting in my bed, and when I realized that these lyrics that I [was] writing were channeling everything Lena’s told me about the two of you,” Swift stated in a joint 2014 MTV interview with Antonoff before he chimed in, stating, “I didn’t know until yesterday.”

Swift went on to joke, “I didn’t want to be creepy about it, and be like, ‘I wrote a song about your relationship.’”

She continued: “I was just really emotional writing this song because I’m so happy for you guys and you guys are like the benchmark of actual, true, real love like it talks about in that song. And I didn’t tell Lena or you about the fact that that was what I was channeling when I was writing it. But I figured when Lena deemed it her wedding song, that she knew I was talking about you two.”

Antonoff went on to tie the knot with actress Margaret Qualley in August 2023, while Dunham wed musician Luis Felber in September 2021. Swift attended both of the couple’s nuptials.

‘Bad Blood’ ( 1989 ): Katy Perry

While Swift and Perry have since squashed their beef with one another, Swift wrote “Bad Blood” in the midst of her feud with her fellow pop star. The pair’s drama began after Swift accused Perry of poaching several of her backup dancers. Following the 2014 release of “Bad Blood,” Perry compared Swift to Regina George from Mean Girls , tweeting, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing …”

“Did you think we’d be fine? /Still got scars on my back from your knife /So don’t think it’s in the past /These kind of wounds they last and they last,” Swift sings in the song’s second verse. “Now did you think it all through? / All these things will catch up to you / And time can heal, but this won’t / So if you come in my way, just don’t.”

Since making amends in 2018, Perry appeared in Swift’s 2019 “You Need to Calm Down” music video and attended an Eras Tour show in Australia in 2024.

‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’ ( Reputation ): Loyal Friends

“This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” seemingly references Swift’s feud with Kanye West , but it also praises her friends for sticking by her side through her public ups and downs.

“Here’s a toast to my real friends / They don’t care about the he-said, she-said,” Swift sings in the Reputation track’s bridge.

A Guide to Taylor Swift Songs Inspired by Her Friends Jack Antonoff

‘Dress’ ( Reputation ): Ed Sheeran

In “Dress,” Swift sings about wishing she and one of her pals could become more than just friends. While the song is most likely about one of Swift’s ex-boyfriends , many Swifites speculated the song was about Sheeran, as he is one of her closest guy friends.

“Say my name and everything just stops / I don’t want you like a best friend / Only bought this dress so you could take it off / Take it off, ha, ha, ha-ah,” the song’s chorus states.

Sheeran, however, squashed the theory in a November 2017 Instagram livestream with August Man . “I don’t think it is. I think if you read into it … it’s not … You know, because she mentions someone with a buzzcut hair cut, and I’ve never had a buzz cut hair cut,” he explained at the time.

‘it’s nice to have a friend’ ( lover ): close friends.

As the song’s title suggests, Swift was inspired by her friendships while writing this Lover track.

“I love metaphors that kind of have more than one meaning, and I think I loved the idea that, on an album called Lover , we all want love, we all want to find somebody to see our sights with and hear things with and experience things with,” she told Billboard in December 2019.

She continued: “But at the end of the day we’ve been searching for that since we were kids! When you had a friend when you were nine years old, and that friend was all you talked about, and you wanted to have sleepovers and you wanted to walk down the street together and sit there drawing pictures together or be silent together, or be talking all night. We’re just looking for that, but endless sparks, as adults.”

‘Seven’ ( Folklore ): Childhood Friendship

While each of the songs on Folklore tell a unique tale, the story of “Seven” was seemingly inspired by a childhood friend of Swift’s who experienced an unhappy home life.

“And I’ve been meaning to tell you / I think your house is haunted / Your dad is always mad and that must be why,” she sings in the bridge. “And I think you should come live with me / And we can be pirates / Then you won’t have to cry / Or hide in the closet / And just like a folk song / Our love will be passed on.”

‘Happiness’ ( Evermore ): Abigail Anderson

“Happiness” tells the story of a dying relationship, leading many to believe the song was written about Anderson. Not long after Evermore ’s late 2020 release, Anderson reportedly announced via her Instagram Story that she had separated from her ex-husband, Matt Lucier . She has since found new romance with Charles Berard , whom she wed in 2022.

“There’ll be happiness after you /But there was happiness because of you,” the song’s chorus states. “Both of these things can be true / There is happiness.”

A Guide to Taylor Swift Songs Inspired by Her Friends Emma Stone

‘Forever Winter’ ( Red: Taylor’s Version ): Jeff Lang

The Red TV vault track is heavily rumored to be about Swift’s late friend Lang, who died by suicide not long after the 2010 release of Swift’s second album, Speak Now .

“All this time, I didn’t know / You were breakin’ down / I’d fall to pieces on the floor If you weren’t around / Too young to know it gets better / I’ll be summer sun for you forever / Forever winter if you go,” the song’s emotional chorus states.

Swift honored Lang while accepting the BMI award for Country Songwriter of the Year in 2010. “Yesterday, I sang at the funeral of one of my best friends. And he was 21 and I used to play my songs for him first,” she said at the time . “So, I would like to thank Jeff Lang.”

‘when emma falls in love’ ( speak now: taylor’s version ): emma stone.

Given the song’s title features the name Emma, many Swifies were quick to theorize the Speak Now TV track was about Stone. Adding to the theory, the lyrics describe the song’s subject as “Little Miss Sunshine,” which some believe to be a reference to the scene in Stone’s film Easy A where she dances to “Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield .

“You would have to ask [Taylor] ,” Stone told Entertainment Tonight when asked about the speculation at the December 2023 premiere of her film Poor Things . Swift was later spotted with the actress at the event.

What Jennifer Did. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024

The murder documentary What Jennifer Did is currently the No. 1 film on Netflix in the U.S. The film recounts the horrific events that unfolded on November 8, 2010, during a home invasion orchestrated by an estranged daughter. While watching, learn more about the disturbing true crime case and find answers to your burning questions , like where Jennifer and her dad is now.

In January 2015, 28-year-old Jennifer Pan was sentenced to life in prison for hiring hit men to kill her parents. That’s the subject of Netflix’s new Jenny Popplewell-directed documentary, What Jennifer Did, which premiered on the streaming site on April 10, 2024. Using incriminating text messages and interviews with detectives from the case, the documentary details how Pan went from being a child pianist to a criminal convicted of first-degree murder.

What Happened In The Jennifer Pan Case?

On November 8, 2010, dispatchers received a 911 call from a family home in a quiet residential neighborhood in Ontario, Canada. On the phone, Jennifer Pan told police that she was home with her parents when gunmen broke into the house and demanded money.

Jennifer, the only surviving witness, said that the intruders tied her up, shot her parents, and fled the scene, according to Netflix . Jennifer’s mother, Bich Ha, passed away instantly, but the young woman’s father miraculously survived the gunshot wound and was in dire need of medical care.

While it was first thought that the Pans were randomly targeted in the deathly fatal home invasion, detectives started to get suspicious of Jennifer as more details emerged. A neighbor’s security camera also captured footage of three men entering the house with no signs of forced entry.

UFC 300 Results: Jalin Turner Takes Embarrassing KO Loss After Blunder

Ufc 300 results winners and losers from pereira vs hill fight card, ufc 300 results max holloway s amazing buzzer beater ko goes viral, why did jennifer pan want to kill her parents.

Pan was living with her parents at the time. She told her parents lies like she graduated from high school and attended college. (She even went as far as to photoshop report cards and student loan documents.) Jennifer pretended to pursue an undergraduate degree at Toronto Metropolitan University and made her parents drive her to attend “classes.”

Jennifer’s dad wanted her to become a pharmacist, while her mother dreamed she would become a professional pianist. However, she wanted a life differently than what her parents wished. Instead, she spent her time dating Daniel Wong, a drug dealer with a criminal record. The Pans disapproved of the couple’s relationship — and when they found out that Jennifer was lying about attending college — they forbid her from seeing Wong anymore.

That’s when Jennifer asked Wong to help her organize a plot to murder her parents, according to the documentary. They wanted the murder to look like a robbery gone wrong while Jennifer played the part of a witness. They hired three hitmen (David Mylvaganam, Lenford Crawford, and Eric Carty), who entered the home and carried out the invasion.

Investigators started to unravel Jennifer’s web of lies. When her father came out of his coma, he revealed that his daughter appeared to know the people who broke into their home. Finally, Jennifer confessed to hiring the killers and leaving her house unlocked. She claimed that she was the target for the murder-for-hire plot — not her parents. Tens months earlier, she asked someone else to kill her parents, according to Tudum.

Where Is Jennifer Pan Now?

In January 2015, Jennifer Pan was sentenced to life in prison, with no parole for 25 years, for first-degree murder and life for attempted murder, according to Canadian news outlet CBC .

Wong, Mylvaganam, and Crawford were also convicted and received life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years. After initially receiving a mistrial, Carty was sentenced to 18 years in prison in December 2015. He died in jail in 2018.

Jennifer is currently serving her life sentence at Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario, but her time in court is not over. In May 2023, The Court of Appeal for Ontario overturned the first-degree murder conviction for Pan and her three co-accused. (The court dismissed the appeals on the attempted murder convictions.) The court argued that the trial judge should have given the jury a chance to select second-degree murder and manslaughter as the verdict. As of August 2023, the Supreme Court of Canada is deciding whether or not to hear the appeal.

Where Is Jennifer Pan’s Dad, Huei Hann Pan, Now?

Huei Hann Pan testified at Jennifer’s 2014 murder trial. On the stand, he said that was shot in the head, and when he regained consciousness, he witnessed his wife dead on the floor.

Hann Pan also claimed that the hit men had a conversation with his daughter and seemed to know them. “He talked to my daughter. I could not hear what was being said, but they were speaking softly,” the father said, per the Toronto Star .

Huei Hann Pan is currently in his 70s and has kept a low profile since the trial.

Prince Andrew's 2019 BBC interview is now the subject of a Netflix film. Steve Parsons/AP hide caption

Prince Andrew's 2019 BBC interview is now the subject of a Netflix film.

"The big get." In media lingo, that means the interview with the person at the center of a big story.

Think Monica Lewinsky after her affair with then-president Clinton, or the actor Alec Baldwin after the cinematographer was shot and killed on the set of his movie. Or Britain's Prince Andrew after his friend Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges.

Interviews like these can entail months of negotiations, calls, emails and meetings to persuade that person to go on the record. That is what happened in 2019, when BBC journalist Emily Maitlis sat down with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, at Buckingham Palace.

Court documents reveal names of powerful men allegedly linked to Jeffrey Epstein

Then-BBC Newsnight booker Sam McAlister had spent almost a year talking to Prince Andrew's private secretary and the prince himself. The result was an infamous interview in which Prince Andrew described Epstein's actions as "unbecoming," said the financier's home was a "convenient place to stay" during a trip to New York, and said he had a condition that meant he couldn't sweat.

The booking and the interview have now been dramatized in the new Netflix film Scoop, released this month. McAlister spoke with All Things Considered host Mary Louise Kelly about how she got the interview, and how she kept a poker face as the interview played out before her eyes.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Mary Louise Kelly: So your task was not only landing the interview — talking the palace and the prince into doing this — but talking them into doing a serious news interview where they would not be able to vet or control the questions in any way. Walk us through the argument that persuaded them. What did you say?

Prince Andrew Steps Back From Public Duties Over Ties To Jeffrey Epstein

Sam McAlister: Well, there's a double argument, right? Here is a man who used to be effectively a national hero in the United Kingdom. He was the beloved son of the Queen, her favorite son by all accounts, a war hero. And now he was effectively a problem prince at best. And then, on the more pretentious level, of course, there was a view of Prince Andrew about him and his behaviors and the allegations against him, which, of course, he strenuously denies. But it was a double opportunity: a human opportunity to return to the life he had, and a royal opportunity to basically restore his reputation in some ways. So I feel it was those two things that made this really a dream opportunity, at least on paper, for him.

Kelly : Was there a moment in the negotiations where you could tell, "I got him?" Like, that just landed. He's going to do it.

McAlister : There was a moment where I thought we might have him. The last negotiation is face to face with Prince Andrew and a surprise guest, his daughter Princess Beatrice, in Buckingham Palace. I mean, you can imagine how overwhelming that was. It was about two hours long. I felt we had a rapport. Emily, the presenter, was also there and Stuart Maclean, who was the deputy editor. And at that moment of rapport, there's a moment of peril, and there's a moment of chance. And I said something quite bold. I told him the truth, which was always my style, that he was known as "Randy Andy."

And that moment is really where he's [either] going to laugh, and he knows that we have integrity and trust and we're honest with him, or he's going to slam the door in our face. Now, luckily it was the former. But you never, ever know if someone's going to say yes until you get that final call.

The full BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew.

Kelly : So you get the yes. The interview is taking place. The prince's answers are sounding increasingly tone deaf, let me put it that way. Take me to that room. Where are you, and what is going through your mind?

McAlister : Oh, my gosh. So I'm about 15 feet behind him. And I used to be a criminal lawyer, and I used to represent people accused of all kinds of things. And one of the great skills of that world is poker face. And thank goodness for poker face — 15 feet behind those incredible answers, trying not to show any emotion, trying not to communicate any panic or fear or consternation. And all I can see is the back of his head. So I saw the front of him for the first time when it went out a couple of days later. But it really was a masterclass in how to give terrible answers and, from my tiny perspective, a small, personal masterclass in showing no emotion whatsoever on your face for an hour — one of the longest hours in television history, I would say.

Kelly : I mean, was there a moment where you're thinking, "Oh, my God, this is just going completely off the rails?"

McAlister : I think it was almost every moment. It was like building. And after the first answer, which was his mildest answer, every line was a news line. Just watching them kind of pile on top of one another over and over. It was really journalistically, obviously, the highlight of my career and quite an extraordinary experience.

What to know about the Jeffrey Epstein 'John Doe' files that were just unsealed

Kelly: Well, the fallout, the consequences from this interview were almost immediate. Just a few days afterward, Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties. Did you have a sense, even as the interview was unfolding, like, this is going to have just extraordinary consequences?

McAlister : I knew it was huge. I'm not going to lie. I knew how consequential it was in theory. But the idea that it would topple a member of the royal family, effectively — you know, sacked by his own mother and we'd still be talking about it, let alone that I would have the opportunity of this incredible movie — it would have sounded like I was drunk if I'd said that to you. So I knew it was a scoop, but I just did not know it was the scoop of scoops.

Opinion Leaders of Jordan, France and Egypt: Cease fire now in Gaza

Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein is king of Jordan. Emmanuel Macron is president of France. Abdel Fatah El-Sisi is president of Egypt.

The war in Gaza and the catastrophic humanitarian suffering it is causing must end now. Violence, terror and war cannot bring peace to the Middle East. The two-state solution will. It is the only credible path to guaranteeing peace and security for all, and ensuring that neither the Palestinians nor the Israelis ever have to relive the horrors that have befallen them since the Oct. 7 attack.

On March 25, the U.N. Security Council finally assumed its responsibility by demanding an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. This is a critical step that must be fully implemented without further delay.

In light of the intolerable human toll of the war, we, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, call for the immediate and unconditional implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2728. We underline the urgent need to bring about a permanent cease-fire in Gaza.

We emphasize the urgency of implementing the Security Council’s demand for the immediate release of all hostages and reaffirm our support for the negotiations brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the United States that address a cease-fire, as well as the hostages and detainees.

As we urge all parties to abide by all relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, we warn against the dangerous consequences of an Israeli offensive on Rafah, where about 1.5 million Palestinian civilians have sought refuge. Such an offensive would only bring more death and suffering, heighten the risks and consequences of mass displacement of the people of Gaza and threaten regional escalation. We reiterate our equal respect for all lives. We condemn all violations and abuses of international humanitarian law, including all acts of violence, terrorism and indiscriminate attacks on civilians. Protecting civilians is a fundamental legal obligation for all parties and the cornerstone of international humanitarian law. Violating this obligation is absolutely prohibited.

Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but famine is already setting in. There is an urgent need for a massive increase in the provision and distribution of humanitarian assistance. This is a core demand of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 2720 and 2728, which emphasize the urgent need to expand aid supplies.

U.N. agencies, including the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, and humanitarian actors play a critical role in relief operations in Gaza. They must be protected and granted full access, including in the northern part of the Gaza Strip . We condemn the killing of humanitarian aid workers, most recently the attack against World Central Kitchen’s aid convoy .

Consistent with international law, Israel is under an obligation to ensure the flow of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian population, a responsibility it has not fulfilled. We reiterate the Security Council’s demand to lift barriers to humanitarian assistance and for Israel to immediately facilitate humanitarian assistance through all crossing points, including in the North of the Gaza Strip and through a direct land corridor from Jordan, as well as by sea.

We, the leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan, are determined to continue stepping up our efforts to meet the humanitarian, medical and health needs of the civilian population of Gaza, in close coordination with the U.N. system and regional partners.

Lastly, we underline the urgency of restoring hope for peace and security for all in the region, primarily the Palestinian and Israeli people. We emphasize our determination to continue working together to avoid further regional spillover, and we call on all actors to refrain from any escalatory action. We urge an end to all unilateral measures, including settlement activity and land confiscation. We also urge Israel to prevent settler violence.

We emphasize the necessity of respecting the historical and legal status quo at Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites, and the role of the Jordanian Waqf under the Hashemite custodianship.

We stress our determination to step up our joint efforts to effectively bring about the two-state solution. The establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the basis of the two-state solution, in accordance with international law and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions, to live side by side in peace and security with Israel, is the only way to achieve true peace. The Security Council must play a role in decisively reopening this horizon for peace.
