Friendly staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Dinner was fresh and delicious. We stayed in one of the cottages away from the main area. Though private, they do face one another. Cottages have mirror glass, but unsure how private that is. Good water pressure from the shower. Firm but comfortable bed. Clean though the facilities are aged.

We needed a place to base ourselves and our dogs while in karamea. Karamea is very dog unfriendly so it was great to have somewhere we could be that allowed dogs. The room was clean, tidy and everything we needed for our stay. Staff were friendly.

dinned in the restaurant both nights, meals were lovely

Clean and spacious. Comfortable bed. Had everything we needed. Enjoyed our meal at the restaurant there.

The place was great, nice rooms and welcoming host

we got a very good coffee, staff were very friendly. I was a little sad we had bought our own food as the kitchen smells were very suggestive of excellent dining.

Very warm welcome. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant/bar area was attractive and the food was very good. Our room was very comfortable and we appreciated having a small kitchen area.

Comfortable but would pay to be upgraded lovely meals and friendly staff

The studio room was well set out for two people with plenty of space. We had two evening meals in the onsite restaurant which were great - good sized meals. Staff were helpful and friendly

Friendly comfortable place to stay with a group for a night and by myself.

Excellent location!

How guest reviews work.

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Definitely stop in here for a meal or to stay the night! We stopped for lunch and ended up renting a room and staying for dinner too. The owner, Maggie, is lovely - and the new chef, Ali, made delicious dishes. Definitely get the moussaka (turkish/greek dish) with lamb (also vegetarian option). And they had a great local wine selection. The restaurant area is cozy with couches and a fireplace, even with a couple cats wandering around and keeping you company:)

This is a great place to stay and have a drink It's a bit of really needed civilisation when you get to karamea. Great food, service and good prices.

5 stars for the meal and dining area - The lamb shank meal I had there last week was very delicious. I would highly recommend going there for a meal. The dining area was cosy an added feature was a nice fire. The selection of accomodation available suits most budgets. Depending on availablility you can upgrade if you want:)

Highly recommend. Perfect location to explore the Karamea area. Stayed in one of the cottages - very clean and comfortable, and a real bonus to have a great spa bath. Excellent evening meals - had the venison burger, fish and chips, steak, and lamb shank. Not forgetting the outstanding home made apple crumble made from apples from the garden

After a long travel and crazy kids tonight. By farther bestservice I have ever had at a family meal. Way way above and beyond. No wonder it's busy. Warm and in a beautiful location. 5 stars isn't doing justice.

Great beds, normally motel bed are hard and we wake up with sore backs. But not here. Awesome dinner, I had the roast which came with a dessert. Recommend this place and we will be back.

I marked The Last Resort down, because of my expectations. If you read this review and you stay in one of their ensuite rooms you will know what to expect and won't be disappointed. On the positive side of this experience, Helpful and friendly staff, great bar and eating area, good tucker, good Wifi and the room was roomy. It had 2 singles and a double bed in it and an ensuite. Nice wooden paneling and wooden beams on the ceiling. Ideally located for exploring the area. On the downside I was expecting an ensuite room to be like a motel room which is normally an ensuited room. There was no TV, Microwave, chairs to sit on, table to eat off and no power outlet in the ensuite. I think the thought behind this was that you would be encouraged to watch TV and sit in the bar area thus spending more.

My experience at The Last Resort hotel in Karamea was mixed. I had stayed there before and was very satisfied with the accommodation, food, cafe, and service. However, when I returned this year, I was disappointed to find that the service and food quality had declined significantly. The owners and the place itself seemed tired, and there didn't seem to be enough staff to handle the workload. My familiy's evening meal in the restaurant was the worst experience we have ever had in a restaurant. Three out of five people at our dinner table did not have their simple food requests met, and 4 out of 5 people found the quality of the meals to be poor. To make matters worse, the owners shared their complaints about other guests with us, which felt unprofessional and inappropriate. The resort's cleanliness was also lacking. The windows were dirty, and there were cobwebs everywhere. The camp kitchen was in dire need of an upgrade. Overall, my experience at The Last Resort was not as enjoyable as my previous stay. While the accommodation was still comfortable, the poor service and food quality, combined with the lack of attention to cleanliness and maintenance, made it a disappointing experience. I hope the owners take steps to improve the resort's overall quality, as it has the potential to be a great place to stay in Karamea.

I have visited this place since it first opened and always loved it. Change of owner now and I hope they get kinks out soon. Menu Un inspiring. Cleaning under par. No atmosphere. Called in one morning to grab 2 takeaway coffee s and after 15 mins was handed 2 cups no lids of bad coffee that cost more than most and I was the only customer! Long way to go to be better than its competition.

Great meal for a small town, chef definitely cares and even had a quick chat himself. Venison burger was amazing. Staff super friendly, only wish we were staying to take advantage of their rooms too.

Room with ensuite, clean no issues.however room not made when arrived at 2.30pm. Atmosphere very quite in the bar and restaurant. When up to the village pub great atmosphere specials to chose from for food.

We ordered 4 ribeye steaks 2 med, 1med rare 1 med well done the chef came and check our order twice nobody got what they ordered very disappointed in the steaks and the cooking of them

Great place for a holiday. Restaurant was amazing & we were well looked after. Scenery was spectacular & we took the dog.

Very happy! We stopped into The Last Resort on our way through Karamea to eat. The kitchen was closed however the lovely server made an exemption for us and cooked a delicious meal. The venue was clean with beautiful artwork and the staff were very friendly! We will definitely be back to stay sometime

We stayed a night in the cabins. Dated but comfortable and tidy. Gardens are established and well maintained. Staff are friendly and the food at the restaurant/bar was awesome. Highly recommend.

Paid $180 for a cottage. Very run down facilities. The meal at the restaurant was very average and over priced.

Spectacular West Coast Cuisine and Superlative Service ; worth the extra drive and Bruce & Maggie Best of the Best! Kevin

Went for dinner. Blue cod was very nice, and big portions. Kitchen made a special vegetarian "chicken-not chicken" salad for my wife.

Great place to stay while I'm Karamea. Was looking forward to a meal there but the restaurant was closed for refurbishment. Next time.

The accommodation is really spacious, and feels like good value for money. The setting can be very beautiful, in nature and in design. The room is cold in the winter, and the heater doesn't really do much, but electric blankets are provided and the shower in room 11 was fantastic if you like hot water and firehoses, if a bit short if you are 6ft. The biggest downside here is that the rooms are not soundproof at all, you can easily overhear any normally voiced conversation in a joining rooms, which was both a hindrance for our conversation with each other, and a distraction from your neighbors, and could really affect your sleep. We got relatively lucky, but I could see having rowdy neighbors would spoil your stay. There are also skylights in the room which make for nice light levels during the day but don't have any curtains so they wake you up quite early. Good if you want to make the most of your stay by waking up naturally at the crack of dawn. Bad if you're a night owl or had a bad night's sleep and want to sleep in. Good wifi. Good facilities. It was nice having a kitchen and lounge to use. Slightly eccentric aesthetic, but it was enjoyable. Great food at the restaurant. Plenty of parking, easy to find, friendly and helpful staff. I would stay here again, but I'd bring earplugs just in case and remember a sleepmask. The soundproofing is the biggest thing to be worried about if you stay here. You're not paying hotel prices, so don't expect hotel quality and you'll be very satisfied.
